I'm curious what do you mean by "believe in" ? Generally my understanding of this phrase is that you believe it exists in real life. I also think this is what Atheists mean when they say they don't "believe in" God. There is a big difference between that and having an idea of what it is. So do you apply a different definition of believing in something?

This is the classic paradox of the Intelligent Design point of view - if complex things require designers, then how can the designer itself exist? And if you make an exception for the designer ("He's infinite / he always existed" or "He exists outside the cosmos" are two common ones), then why can't you make the same argument for The Earth / Universe?

What do you mean by "reverse discrimination"? Has the employer targeted you specifically? Or all employees with your specific religious beliefs? Or do you mean they are trying to undo / reduce the effects of discrimination in your company, in which case what's the problem? As an employee you'll often be called on to do things in which you have no interest. Hate to sound like a company man, but they're paying you to do things that are in their interest, not necessarily yours!

This question seems to assume that in the first place he would want to. Sure, maybe he doesn't like sin, but it could be that proper piety is having the ability to sin, but resisting it. i.e. we don't sin be cause we love God, not because we are not able to. - after all, what good is worship if people have no other choice?

@JohnO - my point is that he took people (and cities) out of the population, but if you create the people just to kill them you wouldn't see a similar pattern since they didn't live in cities that would now be replaced by trees - having said that, JBH answered my question.
Jun 19, 2024 10:04
If Genghis Khan's killings reduced carbon emissions, it was surely because it was reducing the existing number of living people contributing to them. So why would there be a similar effect if you create the people, then kill them?

"I asked about it and they said my husband should provide" - interesting philosophy, given that their sons didn't provide! (they did)

(following edit to explain spell swords) - it's still very vague - what is the technology level? Why are swords sub-par if they can be combined with spells that make them much more powerful? e.g. couldn't one of the spells be used to obliterate the wooden component of spears and pole-arms? Or leap over them or something? Swords were used in medieval combat so I don't really see the problem with your enhanced infantry... once you add magic you can kind of do what you like - I think maybe this question is worth re-writing to give the specific problem with using swords that you want to overcome.

@Job_September_2020 - in my experience, usually "recognition gift" would be given in the office even if it was supposed to be a surprise

On a more general note, Christians always fail to demonstrate God's existence either logically or scientifically because they generally just don't understand the concepts of science and logic (whether deliberately or not I'm not sure). It always ends up relying on a mix or faith and scientific sounding titbits. It feels like they aren't trying to convince scientifically minded people, they are trying to reassure the already faithful who worry that science may disagree with the gospel. As in "Don't worry, we've got you covered"

The last three paragraphs seem to trail off into the usual Christian abstract homilies - there is no information about what we should expect if there is vs there isn't a God. Besides, all so-called "experiments" relating to Christianity can be swept up by Jesus' saying, "you shall not put the Lord to the test". If a sceptic does an experiment and concludes "If God existed such and such would have happened but it didn't", the Christian can always respond, "Of course not! He knew it was a test!"

"now they are following up and asking when was my last day at my previous job" - have you clarified to them that, as previously agreed, you are not starting with their company for another 10 days? After that, your last day at your previous job doesn't really matter. You could be holidaying in Antarctica for all they know...
Jun 10, 2023 08:02
...but if they really expect you to be working already, then you can likely expect this during holidays / after hours / possibly weekends as well.
Jun 10, 2023 08:02
Is it possible they're sending you messages in advance (i.e. just to have dealt with it on their side) but don't expect you to start reading / dealing with them until you start? If not, I would consider it a bit of a red (or at least yellow) flag... Unless of course, they have misunderstood what you mean by your "start date", and they are already paying you, or there has been miscommunication between the managers there regarding your start date.

Then the next question of course is, is that a lot? Like how many Little Boys do we get from the sun per day? (for comparison)

How would it work in a practical sense? Do people have to duck their head a little when they move from the first name to the surname? ("Please welcome to the stage, Mr John [ducks] Doe!") Would he always have to write below the "Surname" line on application forms?

Interesting - then why were captured Al Qaeda / Taliban members in Iraq and Afghanistan during the American wars there not considered soldiers? At the time I remember that being used by several commentators and politicians to get around the Geneva convention. Were Al Qaeda / Taliban not considered a "high contracting party"?

Put it this way. If I break your window, you are discommoded by one window and since I broke it, I should have to pay for it. So you could sue me for the cost of replacement. If I "might have" broken your window, but didn't, you didn't incur any cost so nothing needs to be paid. Likewise if I hit you with my car leading you to a lifetime of hip trouble, the court puts a value on the hip trouble and says I'm responsible for it. But again if you don't have any problems then there's nothing to be paid for. It's supposed to be for compensation, not prize money!

How often is "regularly" - like daily? You may have to consider others here. Finding time when everyone is available for the meeting is not always easy, and it'd be practically impossible if everyone was blocking off hours at a time just to focus on their work - which (in the eyes of the people who need you for the meeting) could be done at any time.

Civilian travel should be possible without endangering the Prime Directive - there could be civilian transport, just tightly regulated to prevent a private vessel from venturing close to an undeveloped planet.

All of the answers are like this - i.e. the Federation would rather hold back their weapons and reach diplomatic solutions, or not risk hitting civilians. However the OP is right - there are situations where they are clearly in battle and still only fire very occasionally. e.g. youtube.com/watch?v=B1L3URogjWI Yesterday's Enterprise - Picard spends an awful lot of time not ordering to fire weapons, knowing they are in mortal danger, meanwhile being updated on the damage being caused to Enterprise. They even destroy one of the Klingon ships, so it's not about sparing lives...

"Long before you'd use it, you'd surrender in some way." - Not necessarily, you're assuming a rational or democratic power in charge of Empire A. However, it depends on the political make up of the empire, e.g. just look at Hitler, who didn't try to save Germans and Berliners from the incoming Soviets, believing them to have betrayed him and to deserve what they get, before killing himself. He may well have used such a weapon if he had access to it. Empire A may believe Empire B to be so abhorrent that they couldn't possibly live in a world where they were in charge, so it's a bargaining chip.

What do you mean by he "forces" you? He can ask or even tell you to do something, but how can he "force" you? He's not your boss. Do you mean this: "Also very often, he forces me to complete a section of the work even though I have to overtime. He threatens to complain to my boss, if I don't do that." - Why do you think your boss will entertain this complaint? "Asish won't do overtime" is a pretty lame complaint.

@JBH "simply turn the fan off when the plane's up to speed" - would that work? I'm not sure on the physics of it but I'm having a hard time imagining that the plane would get a sudden burst of acceleration (enough to keep it flying) when the wind is turned off...

What happens exactly when someone is "slapped" - are they "teleported" forward (like Back To The Future) as in they disappear here and reappear next week? Or are they simply frozen (or moving very slowly) in time for a week, so from their POV they have just jumped forward, but to everyone else they look like statues?

I think this answer misses the point and concentrates too much on the "free speech" aspect. The landlord holds the deposit, and is unlikely to get the repair money from the actual vandal. If, when the lease is up and it's deposit return time, the landlord sees a broken window, can he not then take the cost of the repair out of the deposit? Is it enough for the tenant to say, "Well it wasn't me, it was a vandal" and the landlord has to pay the deposit in full? Does the tenant not have a responsibility of care while occupying the house?

If the diameter is 2.4 times that of Earth then the mass is nearly 14 times that of Earth (assuming the same density although I think it would be higher as more material is compressed under the greater weight), so the gravity is 2.4 times that of Earth. Under that circumstance, humans as we know them would not evolve - if there were an equivalent of a human they would look completely different, they couldn't build the structures we do, etc. The question of whether civilisation is the same would be redundant.

Feb 13, 2020 11:15
@Kaddath - not necessarily - as others have pointed out (esp VLAZ), an AI could be able to figure out the correct responses without knowing what they mean. or else just produce natural sounding responses, e.g. a machine could translate "How's it going?" into "RUN SELF-DIAGNOSTIC /QUICK" and then in response, translate "0 ERRORS FOUND" into "I'm not too bad, keeping well..."

I'd also like to avoid the idea that "the more people believe the stronger the magic is". - Does this mean that just a single doubt will cause the magic to stop working? Doesn't this make air travel highly dangerous? Considering how many people IRL have an irrational fear of flying! Otherwise, you just need a minimum number of believers (or a maximum number of doubters) in which case you should be OK.

What is the definition of war here? Any violence at all? Or does there have to be an official declaration of war? What about an act of terrorism, or just a violent crime? As far as I know, the Vietnam war was never officially declared as such.
