@kaya3 Facebook does (or did; idk if they still do) something very similar to what you suggest. security.stackexchange.com/q/53481/80012

@Simd I don't think we have a distinct name for that, either. Possibly something along the lines of "a bechamel/white sauce made with dripping and with bits of sausage in it that they call gravy so don't go asking for it on your roast".

Something else I just thought of: if "not grading" some problem means "not checking it and not giving feedback", then what good is it to complete those problems? I could complete one hundred problems, all incorrect, but if I am never told that they are incorrect - what will I have learned?
Apr 15, 2022 08:15
@Anton There also arises the issue of students having lives outside of homework (crazy talk!). If one student, for example, has to work to support themselves and another is of independent means, the one of independent means will likely have more time to complete the work and is therefore more likely to hit the ones that are graded - making your grading scheme partly affected by "how much money the student has" rather than "how much the student has learned".

@AmethystWizard When you are controlling the hand, what orders are you giving it if not to stabilize with a healer's kit? Even if control+heal requires two actions, cast MH on turn one, control+heal on turn 2.
Apr 13, 2022 17:32
@AmethystWizard Sure, but your first action being "cast Mage Hand" and the second being "control the hand" should work.
Apr 13, 2022 17:32
@AmethystWizard Mage Hand lasts for 1 minute, 2 with metamagic. You could easily have cast it in one turn and used it on the next. That also doesn't account for the possiblity of multiclassing Fighter2 for Action Surge or a Fighter taking Magic Initiate.

Does a repeated statement have any truth-value? Is it a lie to repeat something that someone has asked you to repeat, or is it merely saying something you know to be untrue? Do actors lie when they speak their lines?

You could almost consider legendary resistance to mean "set the DC to minus-eleventy-billion".
Jul 30, 2020 12:45
Yay, interleaved arguments!
Jul 30, 2020 12:45
So there is no "dragon uses legendary resistance" as a discrete step, because the legendary resistance is part of the saving throw.
Jul 30, 2020 12:44
I'd argue almost exactly the opposite of you @BenBarden. Reactions happen after their triggering event, and the legendary resistance is not a reaction so much as part of making the roll while being a dragon (or kraken or god or whatever). So the chain of events is "dragon makes roll, and possibly uses legendary resitance" then the Chronal Shift reaction is used.

@Akixkisu I'm not so sure it is. The example I usually see of XY problems is the one about getting file extensions, but this doesn't seem to be "how do I get the last three characters of the filename" (the need for the extension being left unsaid) so much as "I have the last three characters, can I work out the extension using only that information?". The answer way very well be "no", but there is a concrete question, fully stated, here.

@JuliaHayward In a similar vein, what about those who will not be participating in the Christmas party at all, possibly for other (the first that comes to mind is religious, but I'm sure there are others) reasons?

@Skyler If the penny reverses direction in your frame of reference, its velocity must also become zero in your frame of reference, assuming you don't move and that infinite acceleration is not possible.

@JBentley I don't think tim was meaning to say "DPRK means not a democracy". I think he meant "Some words/phrases suggest things that are not true. DPRK suggests that the country is a democracy when it is not, just like National Socialism suggests some flavour of socialism when that isn't what it means".

@Mazura "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear"? Sure, as long as you know what they're looking for and that it will never change. And even then, maybe you just don't want people digging through your stuff. I doubt you're doing anything illegal when you go to the toilet, but I bet you shut the door.

Nov 22, 2018 15:29
It doesn't fit your sentence (hence this being a comment), but when discussing a particular problem you could use "X is a solved problem" to say that the problem has been sufficiently studied and worked on that you don't need to spend much (or really even any) time working on the problem yourself - you just pick an implementation of it and think no more of it.

@T.Sar Cont'd from above: What about a creature immune to fire damage in the AoE of a Fireball?
Dec 1, 2017 15:43
@Zeus Some thought experiments that may help. I don't know the answers to these questions myself. Consider a creature C targeted by Chain Lightning and that fails its save (to avoid confounding interaction with Evasion). The creature is also immune to lightning damage. The spell then arcs to three other creatures that may or may not be immune and may or may not make the save. Is C affected by Chain Lightning? Cont'd below...
Dec 1, 2017 15:43
@PhilBoncer So it doesn't. My bad.
Dec 1, 2017 15:43
@Zeus "Magical sleep" to me could mean a particular kind of sleep, like Sleeping Beauty for example. You're asleep, and maybe you need a particular trigger or counterspell to wake you, but you won't be woken by mundane means. Conversely, you could be woken from "mundane sleep" by a slap, cold water, someone playing the 1812 Overture, or any other method of waking someonewho has fallen asleep because they were tired. If that's the case, "magic can't put you to sleep" means magic cannot make you sleep at all, either magical or mundane sleep.

Hey @Shalvenay
Mar 1, 2017 01:59
@nitsua60 I think they're all basically the same system, but they focus on different types of adventure. I've read that the books are all cross compatible, but I don't have any experience with them.
Feb 28, 2017 22:07
I've already changed the parent profile to the RPG.SE one, which should have the right name, but it doesn't seem to have had any effect. Do I need to log out/in, or am I just doing it wrong?
Feb 28, 2017 22:06
Ah, right.
Feb 28, 2017 21:38
Oh, and for those wondering why I'm chiming in - the closed one is my question. Chat is using my old display name for some reason.
Feb 28, 2017 21:36
But I don't really have strong feelings either way.
Feb 28, 2017 21:36
For what it's worth, I'd say that the questions are different enough that the dupe might be confusing. The closed question asks "is this a hit?" (answer: yes) and the open one asks "is damage required?" (answer: no, you just need to hit). But the closed one doesn't spell out what 'a hit' means.
Feb 28, 2017 21:29
That too.
Feb 28, 2017 21:27
@nitsua60 Is that link going where you think it does? It goes to a question about warlock builds.
Feb 27, 2017 21:49
@BESW @LegendaryDude @diego I just spoke to the guy who first floated the idea of a star wars game, and told him what you said. Now there are two other people who are "well up for it". No concrete plans yet, but it's looking bright! Thanks again for your help :)
Feb 27, 2017 20:23
I shall! It may be some time before we get a game going, but it's a start :)
Feb 27, 2017 20:22
I've certainly got some leads to chase down then, thanks :)
Feb 27, 2017 20:22
Oh, thanks for that.
Feb 27, 2017 20:22
As it happens, I'd just got finished reading the SRD/Basic rules/Dungeon World rules/Fate SRDs to see if there was anything that would go down well with my friends when I got the KOTORs, and I did think that they looked very like 3.5e. I guess that's because they are.
Feb 27, 2017 20:15
Do you mean the KOTOR games? I got them in a Humble Bundle a while back. I've only played an hour or two of both, but they're good fun
Feb 27, 2017 20:15
Ah, thought so
Feb 27, 2017 20:14
CRPG?
Feb 27, 2017 20:14
Though while I haven't played, I'd say I do know quite a lot given my lack of experience
Feb 27, 2017 20:12
I'll have a look at Fate - I've seen some good things about that too
Feb 27, 2017 20:12
So I doubt the one who brought it up would know enough to differntiate between the different versions
Feb 27, 2017 20:11
I'm probably the most stereotyipcal gamer, and I've never actually played any tabletop games (not to say I wouldn't, just I don't know anyone else who would)
Feb 27, 2017 20:10
I think they just meant 'tabletop RPG', to be honest with you
Feb 27, 2017 20:09
That's what I thought, but I've heard bad things about that one
Feb 27, 2017 20:08
I have a couple of friends who have expressed an interest in playing "that Star Wars game, you know, like Dungeons and Dragons but Star Wars". As I understand it, there are at least four different official SW games, three of which are out of print.
Feb 27, 2017 20:06
Is there anyone in here that knows about the various Star Wars RPGs?
Feb 27, 2017 20:04
Oh, cool, network rep does let you in here
