Q: "dmask" and "fmask" mount options

user2650973I tried this command to mount manually : sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/external -o uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137 I am not getting what dmask and fmask does here. I know they are used to set up permissions, but when I check permissions of files and folders inside the mounted...

May 21, 2016 18:20
I used fmask and dmask to do the same.
May 21, 2016 18:20
Can you ckeck if my version of mount did the job?
May 21, 2016 18:17
Are you sure that my mount command did not work?
May 21, 2016 18:16
I will learn something new too. ;-)
May 21, 2016 18:15
Feel free to edit my answer to add those commands.
May 21, 2016 18:14
So, if I solved your issue, mark it as answer so that it will help others who may have your same problems!
May 21, 2016 18:12
mount is also simple. Just type:
mount /dev/sdxd /path/to/mp
May 21, 2016 18:12
unmounting would be simple as typing:
sudo umount /path/to/mpuntpoint
May 21, 2016 18:10
Just use the mount command.
May 21, 2016 18:10
That would be an overkill
May 21, 2016 18:10
You don't have to open gparted for doing it.
May 21, 2016 18:08
You can mount any 'block storage device'.
May 21, 2016 18:07
I saw your question.
May 21, 2016 17:47
@dhaneku.b Did I solve your issue?
May 20, 2016 05:05
So to answer your question, yes! You use the mountpoint to read and write to the pendrive.
May 20, 2016 04:41
To see this in action, plug in your USB, also open a few partitions(drives as said in windows land) on your hard drive (ex. your Windows partition). Then in the terminal type lsblk
May 20, 2016 04:40
When you plug in a flash drive, it is automatically mounted by the OS in a folder under /media/<your-username>/
May 20, 2016 04:38
But in linux, there is no such thing as "my computer". You can mount any device anywhere and use the device by going to that location.
May 20, 2016 04:37
In windows, when you plug in a USB, it comes in "My Computer".
May 20, 2016 04:37
@dhaneku.b You must be coming from windows?
May 19, 2016 20:24
@dhaneku.b Any empty folder in which you wish the contents of your flash drive to appear.
May 19, 2016 20:24
So now you are able to compile and run your code from codeblocks? It has not been ejected. You can get the contents of the flash drive by going to the mount point that you gave when you manually remounted it(path/to/mount/point).
May 19, 2016 20:24
You got the device wrong, it should probably be /dev/sdb1 not /dev/sbd1

Apr 13, 2016 10:34
See, you are getting a timeout. So you need to contact your network admin and he will solve it for you. There is nothing you can do about it.
Apr 13, 2016 10:31

Apr 13, 2016 09:30

Apr 13, 2016 09:27
You can disable signature checking if you want. But it is dangerous and you may end up loosing your job.
Apr 13, 2016 09:25
Outbound connections seem to be blocked on 11371. 11371 not 1137
Apr 13, 2016 09:23
I am sure the admins will help you with if you tell them that it is for updating gpg keys.
Apr 13, 2016 09:22

Apr 13, 2016 09:18
What is your setup? Do you have access to the proxy server?
Apr 13, 2016 09:17

Apr 13, 2016 09:17
