Take a class. That will give you some external structure. // Very slightly related, but you might find it helpful: academia.stackexchange.com/a/78073/32436

@WeatherVane - I understood that OP was providing two different examples of situations where a gender-neutral word equivalent to "gentleman/gentlewoman" might be desired.
Jul 14, 2022 02:58
@WeatherVane - I guess "talking up" has a different meaning in the UK from what it means in the US. / Some permanent residents have no aspirations to become citizens; some are not eligible to do so.
Jul 14, 2022 02:58
@Barmar - Ms. took some getting used to in the beginning. Mx. is having similar growing pains currently. They is mostly over the hump now, I think. Just be patient.
Jul 14, 2022 02:58
@WeatherVane - I don't think citizen works, because some people [in the US] have green cards.

10 hours ago, you wrote, "I have since edited the question to no longer use that word [point]." So I figured today might be a good time to re-read your question. But I wonder if you can do another round of editing? I'm still seeing point and thing. May I imagine a video game that has a tiny airplane that has a certain orientation, defined by the "forward vector"?
Jul 14, 2022 02:56
re the hemisphere question, if the "forward vector" is always above the x-y plane, for example, then I was calling that a hemisphere (of infinite size of course).
Jul 14, 2022 02:56
Do all your points live in a certain hemisphere? If so, which one? Also, how is the "forward" vector selected to begin with?

Jul 8, 2022 06:37
@Thomas - Sure. Live and learn!
But note that you're allowed to improve the question after the fact if you want to. That can become necessary in some cases! Because the question was closed, meaning that if you want it reopened, you gotta try to fix whatever triggered the closure. But your question didn't get closed, so the fix is optional in this case. Cheers.
Jul 6, 2022 23:10
@Thomas - It's totally up to you. The net vote on your question is zero. I wanted to give you a tip for writing well-received questions and share part of the rationale -- what you do with that info is up to you.
Jul 6, 2022 02:54
@Lambie - I hope you voted to close for lack of research.
Jul 6, 2022 02:53
@Thomas, you're supposed to share your research in your question. One of the reasons for that expectation is that it will help people understand where you might have gotten confused, which makes for a more useful answer. Would you mind editing your question? / If the definition is archaic, it will be so noted in most dictionaries (if not all).

@KateBunting - You weren't the person who introduced uh-aw for "au" and confused the heck out of me.
Jun 12, 2022 04:26
But automata has only one syllable before the first T. Did you see "uh-aw-to-muh-tuh" somewhere, or did you come up with that yourself? And why didn't you tell us what word you thought it represented?
Jun 11, 2022 20:37
What the heck is "uh-aw-to-muh-tuh"?

Most languages have connection between most words in a phrase. German is the example I know of the exception. The glottal stop is generally used to preserve the separation. Note that this is sometimes a feature of English, too, but less than most German speakers do, and it varies quite a bit from one speaker to another. I'm particularly aware of this because my spouse is German and when they overdo the glottal stops in English it grates on my nerves. But the German accent is even more annoying in Spanish. I hope this helps a bit with what you're wanting to focus on.

Are you saying that you hear people dropping the H in this context?

Mar 23, 2022 00:14
I would prefer to have discussions more out in the open, e.g. in Meta, if possible.
Mar 23, 2022 00:14
I have just read your thoughts on this.
Mar 21, 2022 02:24
@anongoodnurse - Thanks for the flagging guidance. / This isn't my answer any more. You're welcome to post anything you like, borrowing freely from my link. Please do this quickly if you're going to do it because this post will self-destruct in about 24 hours.

Mar 1, 2022 21:52
Thanks, guys.
Mar 1, 2022 21:52
Note I called my local bank manager the day I found out. She was nice but not very knowledgeable and didn't advise us to do or not do anything.
Mar 1, 2022 21:51
Also, I'm confused whether we should try to cancel the payments to Zelle and Venmo. I'm concerned that doing that might push the guy to reversing his deposit, where he might not have actually done that if we had left thigs alone. I think I need to lean on my son to find it if there was a quid pro quo (tit for tat). My son saw it as his friend being generous in saying that my son could keep $200. If not I would like to know.
Mar 1, 2022 21:48
@littleadv @CharlesE.Grant
I'm grateful for the help and didn't notice anything unfriendly or whatever. But I'm confused whether it's still okay to follow the advice given at the duplicate and the other similar Q-A (send letter to bank). Can we go ahead and follow the general advice given re sending a letter, despite my son having given permission (given that he didn't have a clue what was going on, or what appeared to be going on).
Feb 28, 2022 22:05
(The gambling taxes idea might no longer be relevant anymore, in view of the new information.)
Feb 28, 2022 21:45
Clearly my son didn't understand the concept of money laundering -- shouldn't we get that on record with the bank?
Feb 28, 2022 21:44
I'm also concerned about the $1200 in gambling winnings taxes.
Feb 28, 2022 21:44
Also, what do you mean when you say technically my son did nothing wrong. You also said, "you'd be lucky to just be out of $4800."
Feb 28, 2022 21:43
@littleadv - I'm confused. Be prepared for which transaction to be reversed? The deposit from the guy?
Feb 28, 2022 21:42
@littleadv - Thanks. I want to figure out what sort of trouble my son or I could get into and if there's anything proactive we can do in terms of communicating with the bank. Note that we haven't sent anything to our bank in writing yet.
Feb 28, 2022 21:42
@littleadv - Please see update and 3 questions. Thank you.
Feb 28, 2022 21:42
@Grade'Eh'Bacon - Right. I would never have done that. I'm working with my son carefully to make sure he gets it too. He's 18 and young for his age. What I wonder is, how does a deposit get revoked, and how long might that take? (At what point will we start sleeping better?
Feb 28, 2022 21:42
I contacted Fan Duel and they're not explaining HOW or WHY someone would send the winnings to a friend. My online banking doesn't show where the money came from. (I'm joint on his account because my son has done some nutty things with money matters in the past.) Fan Duel says they won't answer any questions unless I have an account with them. I would test it with a small bet to see if I could monkey with the cell phone number or email address to send the winnings to, only that I know nothing about sports and would be incapable of winning any bet. (Note, my son is not much smarter than them.)
Feb 28, 2022 21:42
Deleting the expletives ("blame everything on your parents"), I finally found out more information. I told him what you guys said and he finally told me how he knows this person. "I met him at community college [he's at a four-year SUNY school (NY) now]. We would play basketball and hangout in the cafeteria together." I still need to find out if this guy managed to transfer out of community college. Note, there were a lot of people at his community college who were not really smart enough to plan out a scam carefully. I just can't figure out why the guy was asking to do this.

Have some fun at linguee.com. You'll find it quite helpful to see authentic usage examples.

Note that the only impediment to out-of-state students registering for this class is the higher tuition. Sometimes out-of-state students do matriculate into this program. I'm not sure if the two-party rule kicks in when only one of the parties is in the two-party state, though.
Feb 29, 2020 05:22
Thanks. I added some clarifications.

Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@NickS - I thought he would grade it on the results, which reflected my ability to probe, elicit and capture, as well as my judgment in the collection process, the digesting process (which included deciding which of the things she said to include, and deciding which of those things needed what kind of follow-up), the organizing process, and the way the collected information was processed. // Not to nitpick, but I feel bothered, uncomfortable (it was a bit creepy), frustrated and annoyed (by his hardheaded refusal to accept that I didn't read his mind) and confused. But not upset.
Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@DanielR.Collins - I left it out on purpose. My impression is that for clinical psychology and social work, the ethics of supervising have been well worked out. Just because the supervising is occurring elsewhere, shouldn't change the ethics, I think.
Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@pipinstallMonica - I don't care how he sets it up as long as, if there's going to be a silent listener on the line, I'm told ahead of time.
Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@BryanKrause - I don't like zero to sixty escalations. What intermediate steps are there in this situation?
Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@Mefitico - for your first question -- he told me he heard the whole conversation from beginning to end. For your second question -- that wouldn't bother me. Note, what actually happened wouldn't have bothered me if he had made it clear ahead of time.
Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@BryanKrause - Could you expand on that? (I wasn't entertaining the idea of fighting anything -- I'm trying to figure out whether to inform the department chair (hoping he'll provide guidance to the instructor) or adjust my my expectations.)
Feb 29, 2020 05:11
@JAB - any suggestions for some guided googling?

Feb 29, 2020 05:10
@NickS - I guess the question is whether the residents know they're being observed. I'd be fine with being observed -- if I'm told in advance.
Feb 29, 2020 05:10
@JBentley - The course is conducted entirely online. There aren't even any in-person or telephone office hours.
Feb 29, 2020 05:10
@NickS - You have experience with a training program where the professor watches interactions between the trainee and a client? Are there protocols? Do you have a link to share?
Feb 29, 2020 05:10
@DanielR.Collins - would you mind putting that in an answer?
Feb 29, 2020 05:10
What Dan said fits. Also note, there were written things to hand in. I thought the evaluation would be based on the written work.
