Thanks for trying to help, @Buffy. I already have all of the programming projects I want for that class and am trying to understand how to use rubrics to test students' understanding of the representations through answering questions where they work things out by hand.
Aug 20, 2020 16:37
@MartinSleziak You're probably right. It's moot, however, since the other person deleted their comments, so I will delete mine. Thank you.

I posted a question that has devolved into a back-and-forth in the comments about what I should be doing. I would welcome moderator intervention. cseducators.stackexchange.com/questions/6478/…

@BenI. @Buffy Thank you. I desnarked my original answer.

@GypsySpellweaver Thanks for the suggestion. I thought other people gave good answers so felt no need to add my own. I'll take a look at yours.
Jun 23, 2018 02:33
@Buffy I don't mind the advice, but I have to be selective about what I spend my time on.

Thank you for your comment.

@Buffy The field is CS (hence my bringing it to this group's attention). See the first sentence of the question.

@Buffy No. I could use some backup in the comments if you are so inclined. academia.stackexchange.com/a/111600/269

Q: Should graduate student TAs tell undergraduates to leave a major?

ArnoldFWhile I was a TA for an undergraduate CS course, I built up a good teaching relationship with a student who was struggling. By the end of the course, she had turned things around and was performing much better. We hadn't spoken since I was her teacher until she reached out to me about a graduate...

@Buffy Oops, I didn't mean to point to an answer. I meant the question in general.

I have no grudge against you, @GypsySpellweaver. Farewell.

I also didn't come here to discuss sexual harassment.
May 11, 2018 19:16
@Buffy As I've told you before, I don't condone sexism against any group. I'll be leaving this chat room. I don't want to be somewhere where people say things like "men/women/blacks/whoever are just crazy".

Jun 21, 2019 22:57
@ElizabethHenning I don't know what stage of your career you are at, but we will be doing a tenure-track search this year at Mills, a Hispanic-serving women's college in Oakland, California.
Jun 19, 2019 02:44
@sgf I agree that the research on disproportionate attention is for children not young adults. I included it as an example of women being as biased as men. I've added a qualifying adjective.
Jun 19, 2019 02:44
Thanks, @ElizabethHenning. I've changed my answer.
Jun 19, 2019 02:44
Thank you, @ElizabethHenning. Do you think taking an IAT serves a purpose, even if a different one that I mentioned? I'll think about your suggested change to my wording. I do mean to include other differences that may not count as legal disabilities (just human variation). "Disability status" seems to me to be a binary about the person, which, as a person with a disability, I don't like (I have a disability but do not think of myself as disabled, since I can do lots and lots of things), but I'll solicit more opinions.

@Spectrosaurus I'm sorry you found my language offensive. I encourage you to post your comment as an answer.
Feb 27, 2019 21:28
@Dylan Fair enough. I've removed the offending sentence.

Feb 26, 2019 15:45
I think your title is unnecessarily dismissive of people who might not think the terms master-slave are appropriate. A better title might be should I avoid using potentially offensive language when alternatives are available?

@JanMurphy Thanks, @JanMurphy. I'll look into it.

On image 211, I don't see a reference to Elizabeth Ervin, just James.

In your discussion of image 192, do you mean Elizabeth Ervin instead of Catherine Ervin?

Q: Who were the wives of John Ervin (1791-1843)?

Ellen SpertusAccording to Benjamin Shinn in Biographical Memories of Blackford County (The Bowen Publishing Company, 1900, p. 240): John Ervin was prominent among the early settlers. His early life was spent in Maryland; then he lived in Perry county, Ohio, and came here in 1837. He was married twice,...

Aug 25, 2018 21:15
I'm curious what people would think of a tag or , or is that a question for meta?
Aug 8, 2018 17:36
CSE desperately wants to grow (and leave beta). The moderators and senior users even have an area to help newcomers write good questions.
Aug 8, 2018 17:35
I think a big part of how to treat newcomers is based on whether you want the group to have less experienced users join or want to keep the user base relatively small and sophisticated.
Aug 8, 2018 17:33
I don't quite understand how Community Wiki works, but I think that may also be relevant.
Aug 8, 2018 17:33
@ColeValleyGirl Sharing your knowledge in this fashion is officially considered good (although I rarely see it done). genealogy.stackexchange.com/help/self-answer
Aug 5, 2018 22:45
I also think it's appropriate for a moderator to step in and prune the string of comments.
Aug 5, 2018 22:44
Thanks for responding. I did not see that there were multiple answers by the same user. I was active in the early days of computer science educators stackexchange. We always tried to educate new users and encourage them to improve and stay, but I recognize that different groups have different standards, which is why I asked.
Aug 5, 2018 21:26
@JanMurphy Thank you. I'd also appreciate input on the best way to respond to a flawed answer by a new user (downvoting, suggesting improvements, etc.).
Aug 5, 2018 16:36
I think some moderator/senior user input could be used on the chat chain for this answer. genealogy.stackexchange.com/a/14566/4078

Aug 6, 2018 21:00
@JanMurphy Good point.
Aug 6, 2018 04:25
@colevalleygirl thank you for your reply. I think it is more useful to comment on a question then downvote it when you see a problem with it. As for full siblings being 50% related, that is such basic biology that I wouldn't have thought it's needed sourcing either. I try to be extra encouraging to newcomers so they remain in the group.
Aug 6, 2018 04:25
I'm not sure why you got voted down after such a well-written and informative answer. I hope you don't get discouraged and that you do continue participating on this stackexchange.

Jun 24, 2018 07:17
@Ben I don't think this exchange is productive and will no longer be participating in it. Third parties should not take that as acquiescence.
Jun 24, 2018 07:17
@Ben I said that the existence of sexism in CS was relevant (i.e., might be a factor in how the TA acted or the student would react). You said the gender of the student is "utterly irrelevant". It may or may not be relevant. I don't see how you can make such a strong statement. As you say, there is no evidence in the post in either direction. What I said is not "operationally equivalent to expecting criticism to be softened to females". It is being conscious that sexism in the field exists.
Jun 24, 2018 07:17
Nobody said that "there is any duty to soften competency assessments for [underrepresented] groups". The reason gender is relevant is that there is so much known gender discrimination in CS that it is credible that the TA is judging the student harsher than he would if she were female.
