@AakashM in a safety critical world the correct answer would be "I will not sign this." For engineers it doesn't need to be polite, the facts will do. But you do have to be right and have the facts to back you up.

@Jamesqf because we are running around all day outside with only what we've got in our pockets. You never found gluhwein while hiking? You need to hike in the Alps! And not only in winter =}
Jan 26, 2023 17:52
We have just finished carnival season here in Germany. During this time a huge number of people run around with musical instruments in their hands and stainless steel insulated mugs on bands round their necks. You need the mug for drinking gluhwein and such like. Since rucksacks are not in the uniform, and they don't fit in pockets, there is no other way of carrying one's own mug around. Anyway it looks cool. My personal band also carries a little cup for schnapps.

OK, I'll try again. I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in Germany a first aid course, including CPR, is mandatory for getting a driving licence. So any person with a driving licence issued after this became a requirement will actually know (in theory) how to go about it. It is also taught in schools and in many clubs like the fire cadets, and many companies offer the courses to their employees.

Is US currency made of paper? These days Euro notes are sort of plastic and really robust. I've fished them out of the washing machine a few times.

Do the usual things work? Garlic, mirrors, sunlight?

We were in a very upmarket and expensive German restaurant. I asked for tapwater (because they had taken 30 minutes to bring a menu and I was really thirsty). When it came the waiter said they had to charge for it! Also I just had the soup, and wanted a slice of bread. They charged for a slice of bread! Woohoo, that went down well in Trip Advisor.

Ach curses, how do I embolden a word in a comment?
Aug 12, 2022 18:43
If you are not going to bold the operator you should put the operand-phrases in brackets. Just to stay in the coding theme.

It would be wrong not to. If you work regularly more than 8 hours, you make so many mistakes you spend more than that delta correcting them next day.

Encircle? Russia is really big. Eastern Europe abuts only a small fraction of its borders.

@gerrit Yes, in Italy and a few other places I use German. The waiters can tell which. I asked one once how he knew which language, because he addressed me in German, and he said they look at the shoes and the jackets.
Feb 4, 2022 13:48
@gerrit Within limits. I have been guilty in the past sometimes of forcing the waiter to speak Italian with me when even I can see that he just wants to take his order and get on with his job. Because my Italian was clearly not up to the job. (I've got better since then.)

@Nosajimiki It is well to remember that Europeans died of those diseases too. 50% infant mortality and the occasional plague were a sad fact of life for them and the average person could not imagine anything different.

I know this is Law and you are looking for legal answers. But what you are proposing is plagiarism by the back door. JKR went to a lot of trouble inventing her universe. Why should you be able to just plug in and milk someone else's cow? If you are that highly original, write your own universe.

If you get admitted to a "higher" ranked place, and they slip down a few places in a year or two, would you then leave?
Jan 18, 2022 08:02
Is there something very special about you that means you can only study at "higher" ranked places?

@Roland Oh yes, so irritating. It can't be an elephant twice, it has be a pachyderm and then a thick-skinner. Drives me mad.

Time passes slowly in academia: my niece, a physics researcher, was informed that the EU funding would run out at the end of 2021. The Europeans are going home, one after another, and the Brits are finding new jobs. My niece is no longer in research.

Which Europeans do you mean? Every country has its own system, and they are all different. But they all have in common, that if you get a big expensive health catastrophe - car accident, cancer, MS - you don't have to sell your house. It works on Solidarity. I personally feel I get excellent value for money.

@jamesqf I remember being sad in school, because on the day everybody got a sugar lump polio vaccine I wasn't given one, because my mum had packed us all in the van and got us immunised on the first day it was available.

Obviously you are young and new in the world of work. You seem to expect some kind of special treatment. But you need them much more than they need you. Try and adopt a more polite and reasonable attitude to potential employers in future. If you want to be employed.

I have on occasion bought shares (I don't bother any more). To do this I went to the bank in person to set up an account for the purpose. The bank clerk informed me officially that there was no guarantee I would not lose that money. I gather this was due diligence of the bank to preclude people complaining about it.

@Nzall That would be much too much info for this comment string. My knowledge is no longer up to date, try Wikipedia.

Birds are funny creatures. The trick is to make no eye contact. Then you can walk right up and grab a leg. With chickens you have to watch the wings flapping, they have sharp bits which can rake skin off your face. Still got those scars...
Nov 30, 2020 20:23
@Nzall I rather think most chicken vaccines are mixed in their drinking water nowadays.
Nov 30, 2020 20:23
@Nzall it was a very small family business, so just 10 000. It's about 2 sec per jab, with a vaccine pistol and a bag of vaccine. Catching them is the hard part! Usually the whole family is involved. If they are free range in pens it takes forever. If they are in cages, opening the cages and wiggling the creatures out takes time. If they are outside you wait till they come home to roost.
Nov 30, 2020 20:23
As an aside, I would add that I grew up on a chicken farm and often injected chickens (with vaccine against fowl pest). To do this you pick up as many chickens an you can hold in one hand, then inject all the legs in your hand. Sounds strange, but you catch chickens by one leg, and bundled together upside down you can hold quite a few. You don't care which leg it is, you don't even get to choose. So it must be 50-50 anyway.

It amused me greatly in Canada to see "Doe parties" advertised. Which are the female equivalent of "Stag parties". It's just...cute. As, indeed, are most things Canadian.

I work in defence, and in this project we take security seriously. Our development machines have no external connection whatsoever. For mail and Internet we have laptops. The USB ports etc are blocked. If you find your solution on Stack Exchange you have to copy it over by hand. Only project leaders have admin rights. Perhaps you could add the hardware isolation to your list.

In the first world war (in the UK) conscientious objectors could serve on the front as ambulance drivers, which was a very dangerous job indeed. They often won medals for bravery under fire.
