Mormon mythology says that Jesus was married, among other things. But I believe they call it folklore.
May 5, 2015 14:11
But that renders many of the Greek plays off topic...
May 5, 2015 14:10
Intent, I think, should be the defining factor. Was the intent to record the mythology of a culture? Or to create one for whatever reason?
May 5, 2015 14:05
I don't think we need an arbitrary line.
May 5, 2015 13:57
Some cultures simply didn't get around to organising their mythology in the written word until quite recently. Wars, illiteracy, invading Romans, invading Spanish, invading British, etc....

*Vuh
May 5, 2015 13:53
It's a tricky issue...
May 5, 2015 13:52
The Popol Vug was written less than 1000 years ago.
May 5, 2015 13:50
But asking when ancient astronauts left Atlantis should probably not be.
May 4, 2015 23:20
We shall see
May 4, 2015 23:18
So, as long as the focus is primarily mythology.
May 4, 2015 23:18
Ok
May 4, 2015 22:38
Did we ever establish where we stand on Q's that ask about pop culture versions of mythologies? I.e. I know we had a question about Marvel Thor versus mytho-Thor.
May 4, 2015 22:28
So leave it unanswered until someone finds evidence of a frost bird myth?
May 4, 2015 22:26
I don't think we can really avoid these kinds of Qs
May 4, 2015 22:25
Yep
May 4, 2015 22:25
I suspect we'll get lots of these types of Qs
May 4, 2015 22:24
I know, this is a tricky one
May 4, 2015 22:24
True.
May 4, 2015 22:19
All the murdering and kidnapping. I guess it sold big bucks and here we are.
May 4, 2015 22:18
Yeah. Kinda gross.
May 4, 2015 22:17
Because someone decided to change the beginning/middle/end?
May 4, 2015 22:16
Exactly. How much have we missed out on because it wasn't popular?
May 4, 2015 22:14
Yes exactly. But from our point of view, or the casual reader's POV, there's little difference nowadays. Most people don't know which are the original sources; they're just stories.
May 4, 2015 22:10
I'm suspecting there's more to my mythology-as-fanfiction theory... Canonical endings and all mythology.stackexchange.com/q/464/38 ;)
May 4, 2015 22:09
Pretty much ^^
May 4, 2015 17:15
Oooh an Arctic mythology Q!
May 3, 2015 23:12
Pantheon genealogies, war dates, etc
May 3, 2015 23:11
Like, we think of some things as common knowledge, but are they really common knowledge to non mythology buffs?
May 3, 2015 23:10
It's difficult to know how much to cite.
May 3, 2015 20:38
It's always interesting to learn more about the Chinese
May 3, 2015 20:36
That's a great answer though!
May 3, 2015 20:23
I haven't posted an answer today :/ I'll have to get my writing cap on tomorrow. There have been several questions I know the answer to but just haven't answered :/
May 3, 2015 20:16
Goodnight!
May 3, 2015 20:04
Venerable
May 3, 2015 19:53
Oops blasphemy :P
May 3, 2015 19:53
Isn't all mythology fanfic of a sort?
May 3, 2015 19:53
I know ;)
May 3, 2015 19:52
Gotta love Gilgamesh
May 3, 2015 19:52
But prehistory is my one true love
May 3, 2015 19:52
Sumerian is another favourite
May 3, 2015 19:51
Greek is my main background in terms of academia etc
May 3, 2015 19:47
Yeah, I'm planning a trip to Creswell Crags so I'm on a prehistoric kick right now
May 3, 2015 19:46
Cool
May 3, 2015 19:45
How do we stand on q's about prehistoric mythology? Mother goddess and totem worship etc? They didn't exactly have stories,but...
May 3, 2015 19:32
We have a winner folks
May 3, 2015 19:27
He gives off a mod-ly vibe though
May 3, 2015 19:26
No one checked? :P
May 3, 2015 19:25
Does Yannis want to be a mod?
May 3, 2015 19:25
I know who I'm nominating
