Computer says 'no'--SOooooo

@user111403 But what Russia did was bit diff. They talked about genocide but also recognized those Donbas republics as independent countries and invaded/intervened for that specific purpose, claiming allied countries were asking for help. And more broadly Putin claimed Ukraine was not a real country. If his troops had performed better, I'd not all be surprised if he'd annexed it all, as he did with every Ukrainian region that he managed to occupy thus far.
Nov 12, 2024 09:43
BTW, he also claimed the Tomahawk cannot be equipped with a nuclear warhead, which is also false.

@MisterMiyagi : it's the 2nd most highly rated comment. However the most highly rated said "Both answers are complete gibberish".

In the fine print "Economists predicted that inflation would slow to 2.3% on an annual basis with it rising 0.1% from last month, according to estimates by economists surveyed by LSEG."

@JonathanReez: Sounds like the Roman empire vs the barbarians. Not very far from how Netanyahu phrases it.
Oct 8, 2024 09:54
@JonathanReez: you're giving Israel too much credit there. Putin managed to turn a sizeable portion of Chechens to be on his side, besides laying waste to the region. So far Netanyahu hasn't managed to produce a Kadyrov to do his bidding in Gaza. And he looks like he plans nothing like the reconstruction that Putin did in Chechnya. Yeah, Putin may have [re]built an authoritarian state, but he built something.
Oct 8, 2024 09:54
Like it or not, Chechnya looks good on TV nowadays youtu.be/2zGeOl6E2xQ?t=30, as Trump would say.
Oct 8, 2024 09:54
@JonathanReez: predictions, predictions. Do you know who's gonna be the next POTUS? Also, Syria mostly turned out the way Russia wanted, ultimately. If Iran gets cornered and accepts Russian bases, that will surely be a win?
Oct 8, 2024 09:54
@JonathanReez: Iran already said they plan to implement a "nobody safe" strategy if they are attacked. I.e. all the oil sailing through the Gulf is at risk, like it was in the earlier tanker wars. The US + allies may be able to win that, eventually, but look how easy it's going against the Houthis. China's economy will be the most directly affected, which might look like a side win, but that will only strengthen their energy ties with Russia even more, which may or may not be what the US wants, depending on their strat in Ukraine. (It would be compatible with JD Vance's strategy though.)

Also, having ferrite chokes at both ends of an unbalanced audio cable helps somewhat when you take the signal out of a noisy PC source (I'm not talking about the E-MU here).
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
For example, if I put a 10K/10K resistive voltage divisor out of an E-MU 1212m, and I pick the signal 10K lifted from the ground (i.e. in parallel to the high-side resistor), I get noise in my amp, even though this card has an amazing 120db SNR. But if I pick the signal with a common ground (i.e. in parallel with the low-side resistor): no noise whatsoever. And this even with a lowly TDA2030A amp made on a stripboard (which needs a resistive divisor because it has high input sensitivity, in case you wonder how I came up doing that).
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
Could be normal (or not) depending on their SNR spec. Please post another question with those, with details. If I got this right, the noise varies with PC activity? If that's so, you do have a problem with (PC power supply switching) noise being transmitted to the amp/monitors. You need to have at least one good common ground to avoid that, but it may not be enough, depending on how much noise is being generated and the noise rejection spec of the amp.
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
There is substantial variation between people in sensitivity to high frequency sounds [and noise]. I'll see if I can a paper on that, but basically the older you are, the worse your high-frequency hearing gets. But it's very late where I am and tomorrow is a Monday.
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
Even when powered from a battery which gives "clean" DC, you an get noise on a class D amp, e.g. youtu.be/STyUxXCIE5o?t=225
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
The origin of the noise is the amplifier itself then. A class D amplifier is switching circuit, quite capable of generating high-frequency noise precisely of the kind you've posted in that spectrogram.
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
As for balanced connection... if it makes the noise without any signal source/cable plugged into it, then that surely won't fix it. Otherwise, how good is your source in terms of SNR? Can you listen to it (your source) with anything else?
Sep 21, 2024 12:06
Suffice to say that this most likely not caused by your mains. Buy different monitors w/o class D built-in amp. Or better, buy un-amped "monitors" and build/buy a linear amp with a linear power supply. Unless you plan to demolish the walls of your flat (with SPL), chances are you won't notice the difference on your electricity bill. And I'm guessing you didn't make spectrogram yourself, or you wouldn't be asking this kind of question.

I missed this news then: Israel also tried to sell Iran explodey military connectors apnews.com/article/…
Sep 18, 2024 14:01
Also some interesting claims about the context the op: Israel planned it as opening stage for their next op/war in Lebanon, but was forced to do it sooner because Hezbo was apparently about to discover it axios.com/2024/09/18/…
Sep 18, 2024 13:53
The Hungarian firm appears to have been mostly a shell company though. The actual product, nobody seem to know where it was made for now, except Israel, of course reuters.com/world/middle-east/…
Sep 18, 2024 07:19
OTOH rfsafe.com/… claim that explosive was injected into the batteries. Seem unlike to me as a distances between electrodes need to be tightly controlled, so they'd not work at all like that. A batch of batteries with the explosives would have to be designed, and that's probabaly harder than it sounds.
Sep 18, 2024 07:14
According to france24.com/en/middle-east/… the whole PCB might have been made of explosives. Which would be pretty hard to do other than from the get go.
Sep 18, 2024 07:12
@Obie2.0: apparently the latter, although only for a specific product that was licensed to this apparently Budapest-based company. The real manufacturer might actually be in Israel proper for all we know. 'Gold Apollo authorised "BAC to use our brand trademark for product sales in specific regions, but the design and manufacturing of the products are entirely handled by BAC," the statement said.'

IIRC a number of Asian electronics firms have assembly plants in Hungary, including Samsung etc. They really like the 12-hours shifts. etui.org/sites/default/files/Chapter%206_2.pdf

Ah, yeah, found a photo of the back. Claimed indeed to be "made in Taiwan", or at least a very similar looking model did. Apparently, really made in Budapest, which seems quite likely! apnews.com/article/…

Twas an IP67 pager, at least. Pretty bulky but promised 85 days of battery life youtu.be/x50wwGjX2Ao?t=34 Alas no photos of the back in that self-ad, so IDK where it said it was made, precisely.

@Steve "I don't buy the logic that impairing production in Ukraine would cause a military advantage." There's a cost-benefit analysis here too. While the ultimate benefit in Korea or Vietnam was small for the US, so might be the effort to destroy the energy infrastructure. In Korea in particular it was achieved in four days (90% destruction) once the decision was taken (in 1952).
Aug 30, 2024 20:55
@Steve: Germany too. They've announced massive cuts in their support for Ukraine. At face value is because of domestic problems, but it's hard to avoid thinking some of it isn't due to Nord Stream (being blown up by the Ukrainians, as the German investigation has concluded).

Aug 30, 2024 20:55
As for the private sector offering higher pay in Germany, that doesn't seem to really the be the case for most jobs reddit.com/r/germany/comments/17s4v8o/…
Aug 30, 2024 20:55
@haxor789: I'm not too familiar with Germany, but reports are that you need two years of specialized training to work as a plumber in Germany. dw.com/en/refugee-plumbers-to-plug-german-skills-gap/… I'm not sure if it's due to state regulations/licensing or employers just won't hire plumbers without those degrees/papers.

Aug 27, 2024 13:23
@Steve: I should qualify that with saying that while they do that, it doesn't mean there are no blackouts. Russia managed to destroy more of Ukraine's generation capacity this summer than the peak consumption [in winter], so rolling blackouts will be a feature of life in Ukraine for a while rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/commentary/…
Aug 27, 2024 13:23
@Steve: Except very near the front lines power is being restored rather quickly in Ukraine for now. OTOH in Gaza... the conditions that Joe described are accurate. So, at the extreme endpoint Ukraine could end up like that.

I saw this on reddit on a pro-Russian sub. I wonder if it's more widely believed/posted somewhere to make it a Q here... (Pro-R subs don't have much participation.)

> Fun fact: due to high estrogen levels in the water due to birth control, the average penis size has been shrinking as well as testosterone levels.

@Obie2.0: turns out his data is just reproduction from the less ignored Bell Curve by other authors, so this might actually be answerable, as that other book was dissected a bit more. (Lynn's book has virtually no reviews.) Also, in part due to poor editing, the OP misunderstood the claim. It is actually about an IQ 100, i.e. average, although it's still not terribly clear if they just picked that bracket or if they did any kind of averaging. Since the year for the income is missing (in Lynn) it's hard to say (just from his retelling of H&M).

TBH all answers to that Q addressed the number facts in extremely cursory manner, just pointing to the Wikipedia table that has the same--at least for the Jewish side/claims. That the Q was not closed despite its triviality (in that core regard) is ... interesting. Especially since you deleted some other Qs recently, even though non-banned users worked to improve them.

@wrod: TBH a fairer comparison would be with Ethiopia given the relative levels of development etc., but I don't want to get into that here theguardian.com/global-development/2024/feb/09/…
Mar 14, 2024 10:34
@wrod: and what counts as malnutrition deaths in the US [CDC data] can be a bit counterintuitive: "In the US, we often have overnutrition and malnutrition in the same person, which is something that’s a little bit unique to us. There can be an over nutrition of empty calories that leads to obesity, but the quality of diet that they have is low, so they’re malnourished when you look at the micronutrient content." edition.cnn.com/2023/12/21/health/…
Mar 14, 2024 10:34
@wrod: and how many were under 65 y.o. among those US deaths of malnutrition? And how many children--you probably can't answer the last bit since none are mentioned in the piece.

I should have said "working distance" not "focal distance" photo.stackexchange.com/a/73341/36913
Feb 21, 2024 19:13
Yeah, the fact that some edges are sharp and some blurry at the same focal distance is highly suspicious. Mere tone/color correction will not produce that. Edge enhancement algo's are alas more complicated.

@EuriPinhollow Interesting. Thanks. What does S-curve refer to in this context?
