"I understand that for university students, a girlfriend/boyfriend can be extremely important." I just can't get past this sentence. For whom isn't a girlfriend/boyfriend extremely important?

@TymoteuszPaul that's even more odd: in my part of the EU someone tagging along without an explicit invitation (or without asking for permission) is pretty much unthinkable.

@TymoteuszPaul could this be country/culture dependant? There are very few (legal) workplace things I can think of that are more rude than joining a group for lunch uninvited, but apparently quite a few people see it differently.

@Dragonel In this case it would instead be that OP was offered £X, they countered with £X+Y and received a contract stating £X+Y.

@Neo, except this question also refers to recruiters and honestly, what kind of nonsense is it to think that you should change the format you prepare your CV/resume in for someone who is looking to use it for profit.

@Patrice, I feel like if you can't fill up the hour with something enjoyable you would also do had you not been at work early, you are giving up your free time for nothing. Not to mention the countless other obligations you might need to skip (children). Honestly, being an hour early sounds so absurd to me.

I really like your answer, but I also feel an opening-bracket-position-holy-war coming on ...

@MelBurslan, "...but in eastern Europe, it usually goes without saying, laws are pretty much a joke if you know the right people." Uhh, what?

@Mehrdad, From the way the question is phrased ("It turns out that this was his honors project for an undergraduate major in Computer Science."), it is clear that the work is not used as part of the thesis, but IS the thesis. That is to say that the client has made their intentions clear and your caveat applies.

@MarkBuffalo "Or you're privacy-conscious." Well I have to be, now.
