The character and traits of the rich Jared would make him an entirely different person than Ed who had to work for everything his entire life

In this instance however you can't accurately judge Jared or Ed because it's purely a hypothetical scenario.

Scholarships would give Jared just as much of a chance to succeed if he studied and applied himself as Ed. There's a good chance that even with the expensive schooling and finances that Ed could still fail if he didn't work hard or apply himself. If Jared maintained very high grades up until the point where he was 16 he could easily apply for scholarships and grants that would allow him to reach a point where he could compete with Ed.
