@Nacht I would think this does not apply on a case by case basis. We generally have a social contract with humans as a species, handicapped or otherwise. Even if you murder a completely horrible person who doesn't fit into society in any form, you'd be answerable to a legal system in most civilizations.

@Alexander I get where you're coming from, but what she feels is what she feels. You can't really change that, not immediately at least. What you can help change, is how she reacts to it and handles it. We're sometimes afraid of the dark, but we don't run out of it screaming. We dislike people sometimes, but we don't insult them (to their faces). Calvin did include "explore and process [these feelings]" in his answer, to help her be able to deal with them.

Must admit, even though I'm familiar with the phrase, it's a bit stuffy at least to non British English speakers.

Yes, gender/race/orientation should have had no role at all. Only competence should have mattered. Both in hiring and wages. But it hasn't been so for ages. Must we really be up in arms if companies try to right some wrongs?

But here's a completely race and sex agnostic reason : Especially in creative fields like writing, cinema, etc (even when it's only a part of a larger tech or marketing industry), diversity in points of view, experiences and backgrounds add tremendous value. If my staff was predominantly type X, I'd be thrilled if I found a qualified candidate of type Y or Z, and would

Sorry I wasn't more clear, I meant that Ben Crowell's comment/statement was probably just a joke. Meant to invoke a chuckle and no more. If someone really does that though, I agree it's not a joke, at least not an appropriate or a funny one. For the reasons you said.

@Trilarion It really isn't practical to get a doctors note for every little sickness though.. Like a headache that just takes a good sleep, a stomach cramp that goes away in a day.. Still valid reasons to not be able to make it into work. (Ben Crowell's "friend" could very well be using this loophole. With due regard to the fact that it was just a joke.)

Wait, WHAT? Lessons in her underwear, just because she didn't have the appropriate PE wear? First things first, sue the school and get her outta there!

I think culture has a big part to play here. If a culture celebrates motherhood as the biggest achievement of a woman, and primarily sees it as her responsibility to raise a child, then yes, that culture will have mothers who are the better (if not only) primary caregiver. Fathers would tend to be the disciplinarian in the family and the secondary care giver of the baby. Barring that, I personally do not think there's general rule for who is the better care giver, biologically or psychologically speaking. Just like @Willow said.
