@Astralbee I’m sorry you’re upset that both my answers have a higher score than yours, but it’s not a competition.
Jul 20 18:09
@Astralbee Well, feel free to downvote. The page I linked has multiple descriptions of the idiom, including one from Collins COBUILD and none of them ‘prove’ what I stated in this answer is wrong. Idioms have multiple definitions with different nuances just like words do. Maybe you should add at least one supporting source to your answer before worrying about if I’ve included your preferred definition in mine.
Jul 20 18:09
@Astralbee That's not a nuance I get from it at all, but that's the thing about idioms. We tend to learn them by hearing them used in context instead of knowing their exact definitions. Do you object to my example sentence as something no-one would say in your opinion?

@MichaelHarvey Has a bunch of people popping up to eagerly repay their debts ever happened? I have seen people come out of the woodwork with their hand out though :)
Jul 20 18:09
@MichaelHarvey I'm poking through the sources and most say disapproving, but I agree with you that it could have evolved to be more neutral and the dictionaries haven't caught up you. I don't think it's ever positive though. Maybe using "crawling" instead of "coming" would make it more disapproving. It's a pretty mild disapproval even so.

I am hopeful I may get some cantaloupes this year, but I don't want to jinx it. I am afraid the wildlife or bugs will get them right before they ripen... It's been three years since I have gotten to eat a melon I grew :(

So. Many. Cucumbers. I'm getting this many every other day. It's got to slow down soon or I'm going to run out of people to foist them off on.

Even after slicing 8 of them for giardiniera I have half a drawer left

I have so many cucumbers and I only planted three seeds. Going to have to start leaving them on people’s doorsteps

It's walnut and ash I think.

Another thing my husband made. That was before we had the CNC machine, so it's all hand done.

First cucumbers of the season. I’m picking them early so I don’t end up with two and a half bushels I need to give away. Probably going to do some spicy gardeneira with carrots and cauliflower.

our 10 minute monsoon ended in a lovely double rainbow as it rushed off to dump a bunch of rain and toss patio furniture around somewhere else.

@Lambie It seems to strip most of the information from the images, so I'm not overly concerned about stalkers. I would be more careful about the content of the pictures. SE staff will have access to your IP in the logs, but I wouldn't worry about that.
Jun 16 23:11
@Lambie I don’t understand the question. What tool are you talking about?
Jun 11 18:48
The light was really dramatic that day.

Beautiful glass by Joshua Solomon of Norfolk VA we saw at an art show recently. The picture doesn't do it justice.

@motosubatsu It doesn’t mean it was good advice but if you were forced to do it by staff that’s that I guess.
Jul 5 00:29
@DarkCygnus I agree with the edit of the title, but your edit of the body affected an existing answer. It's important context to understand why people are reacting so strongly.

Water under the bridge - problems that someone has had in the past that they do not worry about because they happened a long time ago and cannot now be changed. They did me dirty when we were kids, but that's water under the bridge now that we all have kids of our own.

Bonus idiom stick to (one's) knitting - To do only what one knows or is familiar with. As seen on X it blew my mind when we learned that best practices was for businesses to rent instead of buy their properties/that's a pendulum of "stick to your knitting" versus "control your destiny"

We do have a set of recommendations for dictionaries in the Resources for Learning English thread: ell.meta.stackexchange.com/a/739/9161 not sure how well that list has been maintained.

steal someone's thunder - to prevent someone from having success or getting attention, praise, etc., by doing or saying whatever that person was planning to do or say. I didn't mean to steal your thunder, but I just had to tell your mom about your promotion.

I think the help topic explains that ell.stackexchange.com/help/closed-questions It starts with "Questions that need additional work..." and explains what sorts of edits should be done for different close reasons.
Jun 9 17:30
ELL has always been more "on hold until it can be improved" than go pound sand.
Jun 9 13:43
Also, closing a question is a good way to encourage people who want to answer it to edit it to get it reopened so you don't have to do it all yourself :)
Jun 9 11:55
@Mari-LouA Your unilateral close vote is a tool you shouldn’t be afraid to use. Low quality questions should be closed quickly before people answer them, otherwise there is no incentive to put the effort into a better quality question. In my opinion, it’s a good idea for you to do all the reviews you can because you have the experience to know the difference between someone who is taking advantage of the community and someone who just needs some guidance.
Jun 8 11:56
Sorry that last bit was for @Araucaria-Him.
Jun 8 11:55
@Mari-LouA If someone is “robo-reviewing”, a moderator can warn them about it though and potentially suspend them from reviewing if it continues to be an issue. Also a meta discussion about the questions that are getting closed even though they are salvageable might be in order, because 4 other people aren’t seeing the value if the question is actually getting closed.
Jun 8 03:24
As all get out - To the highest or furthest possible degree; as much as one can imagine. We went to see a famous comedian last night and she was as funny as all get out.
Jun 6 19:45
Bonus idiom do (someone or something) justice - To represent someone or something wholly or accurately. Often used in the negative to emphasize that someone or something is better than has been portrayed. The art at the show was really amazing. The picture I took doesn't do it justice.
