Why are you surprised? Your academic home page says "I am looking for students for M.Sc., Ph.D. and post-doc positions. The requirements are: (1) an aspiration for making the world better, (2) creative imagination, and (3) excellent mathematical skills. Both Israeli and international students are welcome". So you got an applicant who 1) read your home page and 2) took what you wrote at face value. If you don't want to take this applicant on, fine. Say "No" politely and everyone moves on. But don't set people up for failure.

As an example, Einstein worked in the Swiss post office from 1902 to 1909. So returning to academia from a non-academic job is not an unheard-of feat.

I'm sure he doesn't care if he has legal grounds. He can out-spend anyone so in the end he'll "win" because his opponent will be forced to give up due to lack of funding and he'll get a default judgement in his favor. Justice may be blind, but she sure loves the smell of money...

As an archer, I'd expect that in the face of rain the longbowmen would simply have unstrung their bows and put the strings into their pockets or some other sheltered location. At most it takes 5 seconds to string a self bow, such as the traditional English long bow, or a recurve.

Putting someone on a PIP is a clear statement of "WE WANT YOU TO LEAVE". If that is not your goal I suggest you find another way to communicate with your employee.

Politics and/or religion would be two big possibilities.

The people who seem to be most concerned about homosexuality are those who A) have been taught that homosexuality is a sin, but B) fear that they are gay or lesbian. There's nothing wrong with sex between adults, be it straight, gay, lesbian, bi, or whatever, as long as nobody's being forced, coerced, or abused and everyone's happy with the results. If you don't like something, speak for yourself and don't do anything you don't want to do - but don't tell others that what they like is "wrong". And if your religion is telling you that what you like is a sin, maybe you need a new religion.

Jan 28, 2021 16:33
@SethR - well, I've heard that all that is gold does not glitter and not all those who wander are lost - I don't know if it's true, but some people are saying that... (Wow - mixing Tolkien with Trump just makes me feel all...dirty. Eeeewwwwwwww!!!!!)

Putting your alien at ground zero of a nuclear explosion would work. Some might think this is overdoing it but I say there's no kill like overkill.

@RobertSpencer - I wonder if non-native English speakers who understand the words "toy" and "let" would be able to make an intuitive leap of understanding when they first hear the word "toilet"?

@user253751 - Godwin's Law says "As an online discussion grows longer the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1". But as Michael Godwin himself noted, "If you're thoughtful about it and show some real awareness of history, go ahead and refer to Hitler when you talk about...politician(s)." Comments such as, "You're a funking Nazi!" invoke Godwin's Limit, which can be stated as "When a Hitler or Nazi comparison is made the discussion is finished and whoever made the comparison loses whatever debate is in progress".

@T.J.Crowder - any sort of "I know I won Georgia by 500K votes" alternate reality defense is going to be laughed out of court. He cannot say "I need 11K votes - come on, guys" and claim that he "knows" he won. And if he can hold both of these positions in his mind simultaneously it means it's time to invoke section 4 of the 25th amendment.
Jan 6, 2021 21:40
@Accumulation: "Trump would have to know what he was doing was illegal" - well, I'll tell ya, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" was drilled into my head many years ago. Otherwise committing any crime would be allowable as long as the defendant claimed they didn't know their actions were illegal. Also - his attempt to get Georgia state officials to "find" 11,000+ votes means he runs afoul of "...or attempts to deprive or defraud the residents of a State of a fair and impartially conducted election process...".

"Subornation of perjury" was the very first thing that crossed my mind when I heard of this call.

@WoJ - having both "Democratic" and "Republic" in a countries name is a pretty rock-solid guarantee that repression, oppression, and etc are the norm/de rigeur/par-for-the-course in said Democratic Republic. Mix in "People's" (e.g. People's Democratic Republic Of Ollystan) and you won't want to be caught dead there - and if you ARE caught alive there they'll work hard to make sure that can't happen again. :-(

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all."

@MindaugasBernatavičius - the full text of that law (which, by the way, is "Heinlein's Razor", named for the science fiction author Robert Heinlein) is "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, but don't rule out malice". Emphasis mine...

@Martijn - frog swords must be adapted to the requirements of an amphibious wielder. Sharp? - obviously. Low air/water resistance? - of course. Neutrally buoyant? - absolutely! What good is a sword that sinks like a chunk of steel in water? Clearly there's a lot of metallurgical work to be done in terms of developing steel alloys which achieve something close to neutral buoyancy in water!
Apr 17, 2020 16:45
When I saw this question in the Hot Network Questions list I had a vision of adventurers employing enchanted frog-armorers to manufacture, carry, and care for their swords. After that the question was, frankly, a bit of a let-down... :-)

25 developer slots, 35 new bodies per year. That's 140% turnover per annum, which is absolutely nuts. I'd say that your intuition regarding the state of this department is absolutely correct. Perhaps going back in history and determining when this state of affairs began might lead to insights into the problem - and in my mind, at least, this is a HUGE problem for your company. No group can work effectively when there's no continuity.

I believe this would be known as a "time-share", or short-term exclusive rental. The lich, known hereafter as the party of the first part, agrees that for a defined period of time the unicorn, the party of the second part, shall have exclusive use of the location or domicile, known hereinafter as the "lair". There's probably realtors and lawyers involved (these are generally undead), there's contracts, clauses, inclusions, exclusions - is this great, or what!?!

Please define "understand" precisely. Thanks.

@RonBeyer - perhaps that's the point. A free society depends on freedom of communication. Tyrants must always shut down free speech - because, if the peasants can communicate between themselves, think how much harder it is to lie to them, or ship them off to the salt mines or the gas chambers, if they know where the trains are headed. The problem with peasants is, they're so fond of remaining alive and (relatively) free. We need to breed a more docile variety of peasant. Wait! I've got it! We'll give them all cell phones and let them play games all day! Win-win!!

The usual method is to give them equity in one form or another, and pay them a lot to make up for the risk that the company may go under before it gets a product to market.

@Andy: "...expensive employees...first to go" - that can get a company in trouble if the end effect is that a disproportionate percentage of older workers are laid off.

Good for you. Ultimately it's an 18-year-old Aztek, so you can hardly mess it up any worse than GM did in the beginning. :-)
