"do not think it is my employers right to tell me how to think and it doesn't align with my personal or religious beliefs." But you can't even make that argument since you haven't been to those meetings yet, so you don't know what they're going to say. For instance, if they told you how they want you to greet potential trans customers. Do you think that would violate your rights?

Focus on what you can control. Find a new job in a more competitive company, do your own startup, or do your own apps on the side. And yes, keep your head down for now and don't belittle your team for being incompetent. Being an AH is not good for your career either.

He probably has autism, but if you complain to HR, it's important that you do not mention this. It's really bad form to diagnose people, or to repeat the diagnosis of others from what others have told you (unless this is something that he openly says about himself). Also in the US, I know you're in the Netherlands, so I don't know if this applies to you. But making a complaint about someone in the US while explaining that they're autistic can be grounds for discrimination. So in the US at least, any complaint to HR would only talk about the unwanted behavior without mentioning any diagnosis.

@notmySOaccount, You're right of course. I'm sorry if I phrased my question incorrectly. My point is: If your manager is sexually attracted to you, then there could be an additional dimension to this question.
Feb 22, 2024 01:34
Are you a woman? Are you working remotely? May be ask your colleagues if Steve did the same to them.

Oct 4, 2023 09:12
Even if you could force them to accept, they're all going to leave your company as soon as they can. Your CTO is destroying the your department by doing this. If I were you, I would be looking for an exit as well.

Sep 17, 2023 22:21
It sounds like you're a new employee. If so, I'd suggest you keep your head down and just do what manager tells you to do. Over time, you'll get faster, or your management will begin to trust you more, but this kind of evolution takes time. In the meantime, you should continue to look for a job elsewhere should the worst happen. And yes, the worst may very well happen.

Jul 8, 2023 21:54
@stannius, Yes, I agree. The OP needs to prepare for the worse.

Don't give any more notice than you legally have to. It doesn't matter if your boss is on vacation. If you give your notice now or if you press the issue now, you'll lose your chance at a severance and he'll ask you to leave the company before he leaves for vacation (in other words, only press this issue if you have money in front of you and you wouldn't mind an extra unplanned partly unpaid vacation before you start at your new company). And yes, you may lose your severance once you give your notice, but that's what usually happens when you exit the company on your own timetable.
Jun 21, 2023 20:31
"I do have a job lined up" Did you mean to say the opposite? You don't have a job lined up? If you do have a job lined up? When is your starting date? How much notice are you required to give? If you don't have a job lined up, you should wait it out and still try to improve. Replacing someone can take time.

Are you telling us that your pull request didn't contain code/documentation changes and that it's just a messaging channel for you?

Jan 29, 2023 22:52
Or if you can't find a new employer right now, at least, stop talking about what happened. Even if Adam is exaggerating, the more you talk about it, the more you will remind management that you said something negative about the company.
Jan 29, 2023 22:52
"I immediately switched topic, but he managed to hear the last sentence I said." If what you said wasn't really negative? Why did you feel the need to switch topic when Adam showed up? Your account seems to contradict itself. Anyway, it seems you burned yourself at this workplace. It's time to find a new employer. Hopefully with your next employer, you'll remember not to badmouth your employer where someone could overhear you.

What do you think it means? What do your friends think it means? Don't ask perfect strangers on the internet. We don't know you personally. Ask your boss, ask your friends, and ask your colleagues. Maybe he was full of it, we don't know. Definitely, ask him for more actionable feedback. The feedback, as vague as it is, is not actionable.

I'm with Blueriver on this. The question is. What steps have you taken since the hack? And how long has it been? If you've taken zero steps to scan your computer for malware, or zero steps to change your passwords, or zero steps report the potential breach to IT, or change all your passwords that your normally login from your computer, or change your AMEX card (if your card details were on your computer), then that probably doesn't bode well for your side of your story.

Are any of your family members sick? Do you have a newborn? It would help if you told us the so-called "valid" reason. Also, what does your contract say? Or employee manual/job description? Are you in an "at will" state?

Jun 11, 2022 13:22
Your family members are wrong. You need a good reference from this company. You shouldn't take the risk. But don't offer to buy the laptop. The laptop itself isn't the problem. Even if you were to buy the laptop, they would need to get it back so they could wipe it. But the employer needs to pay for the shipping (and the boxing if it needs a box).

Mar 25, 2022 23:41
@Esther, It's not the wires that are the problem. It's that most employees can not be trusted not to plug in a usb thumb drive they randomly found in the employee parking lot. And most employees can not be trusted not to plug in a nice keyboard they found in a cardboard box lying around the office reception area with the label "free keyboard" written on the box. And if you work in an investment bank or in a research facility, not allowing most employees access to those ports is completely normal. computerworld.com/article/2510014/…

@DarkCygnus, For wifi, upgrading to a 5 Ghz wifi router would solve the issue. Unfortunately, you can't do that for Bluetooth.

Does it really matter if it's sexism or not? It's not like it would be easy to prove. Either way, it's not a good place to remain at. She needs to look for another job. And when she looks for another job, she needs to tell any potential employer that she won't move unless the new employer offers her something that makes up for the equity she would be leaving behind.

@ectoplasm, Yes, "going back on the job market", and asking better screening questions during future interviews.

Jan 21, 2022 00:47
"Sometimes I ask people to communicate in written." Also, you should know. Your written English is a little broken also. So if you're communicating with them in English, that's one more reason some misguided people may only try to communicate with you over the phone or over Zoom. It's because your voice (or your body language) gives them way more information about whether you've understood their request or not.
Jan 21, 2022 00:47
@user855286, In what language(s) are you communicating in? I use Google Voice. In the US, it's free and it instantly transcribes what people say in my Voice Mail. And people leaving voice messages have no idea that's what I use. It also makes me more efficient, because I can just quickly read what a message is about in a second or two without needing to listen to it. What job do you have? Sometimes, using tools for project management/issue tracking like asana.com or JIRA can cut down on back and forth communications also.

What is your Masters in? What's the time zone difference between Guadeloupe and the state you're targeting? And why only the United States? Wouldn't this scheme for any other country in the world? Or is just for the United States?

Jan 5, 2022 01:24
@jonrgrover, Yes in tech, these feelings can be especially brutal. You can feel like a master and a superman one day, and you can feel like an absolute newbie a week later. That's what I meant by ego.
Jan 5, 2022 01:24
@jonrgrover, No, I wouldn't go that far. I think you should read Mastery by George Leonard. That book has an anecdote that might apply to you. It's about a black belt in Karate who's unable to learn Hapkido very well (unlike other students) because he's unwilling to become a student again. In other words, it's his mastery in one area that prevents him from moving forward in another area. And it's his unwillingness to look like a bumbling fool all over again that prevents him from moving forward.
Jan 5, 2022 01:24
@jonrgrover, There is no need to delete your question. You can just edit it. We want to help you. We really do. But your own ego may be getting in the way.
Jan 5, 2022 01:24
@jonrgrover, Your github project has zero documentation and zero explanation. That's going to be a problem. Would you be willing to try out sites like leetcode.com pramp.com or binarysearch.com Those sites would be ways for you to measure your skills against the skills of others.

@notphilphil, I doubt Joe Strazzere is located in South Korea. And you really need to speak to people who are familiar with corporate culture in South Korea. Perhaps, someone will be able to chime in. With that said, I don't think you should say anything unless you want to commit career suicide. And I say this myself as someone you shouldn't listen to either since I know very little about South Korea myself.

Sep 29, 2021 21:38
I would just use a virtual avatar (that tracks your face in real-time). If you get asked about it. Just say: "This is what I look like at 2AM" medium.com/@hyprsense/…

Sep 22, 2021 16:35
@Popiko123, When was the last time you gave a compliment for someone's work? Or when was the last time you thanked someone? Does either of those activities make you nauseous too? Usually, people crave specific positive feedback, not generic well wishes that could apply to anyone.

Sep 15, 2021 20:17
By the way, you may want to join a community like dev.to so you can post your blog for free (but if you could get a blog with your own domain name, that may be a better alternative. It may just take more work to set up)
Sep 15, 2021 19:10
Ok then. Based your posting history and all the stackexchange communities you belong to, Cognitive Science seems like a perfect choice for you. I wish you luck on your journey. And if you ever start a goal-related blog/site, please post a link to it in this chat. I would be curious to see how well you do with your goal.
Sep 15, 2021 06:51
By the way, why are you interested in Cognitive Science? Are you interested in linguistics? Psychology? AI? Neuroscience? Are you interested in doing research afterwards? Or working in a particular area? Sometimes, it's useful to ask yourself "why" you want something. The more specific you can be with your goals, the more people will be able to help you.
Sep 15, 2021 06:32
Also, I've updated my previous answer with more resources. I don't know if they will be helpful to you, but you should take a look at them.
Sep 15, 2021 06:29
Let me see if I can find anything else
Sep 15, 2021 06:29
I'd suggest you join this community reddit.com/r/cognitivescience
Sep 15, 2021 05:59
By the way, which University are you targeting? Or are you open to target a different University?
Sep 15, 2021 05:58
Give me a few minutes, I'm going to look for a better community for you.
Sep 15, 2021 05:56
Note that Academia on reddit may not be the best community for you (even your question follows the rules). They get a ton of spam on there. That's probably why they're so quick to delete stuff.
Sep 15, 2021 05:54
I recommend you delete your second question on stackexchange about your reddit delete. And I recommend you delete your second question on reddit about why the post was deleted. All these extra questions and edits make you seem like a spammer. If you want to know why your initial post on reddit was deleted, read all the rules on the right side bar and privately message the reddit mods directly.
Sep 15, 2021 05:52
@sosa, Hold on.
Sep 15, 2021 05:52
@sosa, A question? It looks like a moderator on that subreddit may have removed that question.
Sep 15, 2021 05:52
@sosa, You just triggered the spam filter on reddit with the keyword "tuition-free". And the "fake statistics" message, that's simply an ad. You can tell it's an ad because there is the word "promoted" in front of it. If you don't like ads, I recommend you install an ad-blocker for your browser.

What does it matter what the advantages are? They're wasting less of their time at your expense. And they're screening for highly compliant and desperate candidates, ones that are too afraid to ask questions or make waves. Those candidates are the same kind of employees that won't say anything when they're being sexually harassed or when they're asked to do unpaid overtime. Let's not pretend that such predatory companies do not exist. They certainly do. For what type of job was this by the way?

Aug 19, 2021 07:52
@Mars, No one is saying that you shouldn't overdress a tiny little bit. Also, you have to keep in mind that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. So if you're on the East Coast, or outside the US, or if you're going to have a customer-facing role, or if you work for a bank, or some big traditional company. Things are likely to be very different. But for the wrong company, overdressing in a suit when everybody else is casual shows an inability to calibrate yourself to the company culture.
Aug 18, 2021 15:58
This will also depend on the type of position you're interviewing for, the region you're interviewing in, the type of company you're interviewing with, etc. In any case, the more interviews you have under your belt, the better you'll get at feeling this out.
Aug 18, 2021 15:58
@Mars, I'll echo Voo's answer. Ask your network. If you're really not sure, you can also ask the HR recruiter beforehand. You can also just take off your tie and put it in your pocket if you find yourself way overdressed (or take off your blazer and leave it in your car if you came in with your own car).

Jul 21, 2021 12:21
Also, you want to ask for money with an audience around. This way, if the person you're asking says "no", perhaps someone else can jump in and offer the money instead. It saves you from having to ask each person separately.
