I'd suggest slightly rewriting the question to something like "It is fair... because it is incompatible with well-accepted results?". The relativity example is a good one, but you could get equivalents in other fields, like evolution in biology or conservation of mass in chemistry. The specifics aren't relevant, in my opinion. The same standard can be applied to different fields (only depending on how well-tested the violated theory is).

@EricDuminil note that this is not someone saying "you all should stop using this because of the 0.5%" but "I'd like to use something better myself".

You have been working on your thesis for years. How much of a difference can one day more make? Congratulations, you deserve it!

On the comment of MathML replacing LaTeX: the later is a typesetting language, that most people use to do mathematical typesetting. But for the people that care, the rest of the work is equally important: from kerning, to float and page layout, to the handling of widows. HTML is meant to handle varied and even dynamical layouts, so it cannot do nearly as much.

(BTW, journals will then take the tex and input it in their own commercial typesetting system, and do a worse job than me in the process).

Sadly, the people stuck in between are making very low salaries, so it is hard to take a harder stance.
Aug 13, 2019 15:35
@Len if they make less than minimum wage, the employer has to compensate to that level. So, essentially, part of the tips goes to the employer in the form of below-minimum wage.

@Roland not necessarily. In Sweden, the tax records of everybody are public, so anybody can see how much I earn.

@Clay07g I wouldn't be so sure, the OP is getting 3.5k$ a month as an entry level job. Either he has some amazing marketable skills, or the cost of life (and hence, salaries) are high.

Apr 23, 2018 21:28
Keep in mind, your old employer has a full month notice. What would they do if you had gotten hit by a bus?

Jan 28, 2018 00:10
@PatriciaShanahan some people think that if they say things joking, they are not offensive, and of course no one would ever take it seriously! Someone has to teach them that that is not the case, and if the OP is in good terms with them, it can be a good opportunity (but she shouldn't feel forced to, of course). And, as Konrad says, peers that are not being offended are in a great position to call this out.

@Clément you are bound to your university policies, I am not. If I want to contact you about your paper, I can send you an email to your Gmail account, and you can reply with whatever happens to be your current institutional email. The point of providing an email is for readers to have a way of contacting the authors any time in the future.

Regarding Spanish, the adults usually sound native (I guess no lack of South Americans in California), but I don't know if the accent matches the country. Teenagers sound to me like people brought up in America speaking Spanish at home (quite good, but something is off). Now, when an American character is suddenly supposed to speak Spanish... that's when I need the subtitles!

"How would someone be able to use a theorem correctly if he doesn't know its proof?" Almost anything a physicist does (barring mathematical physicists).

I don't have a program that requires changing often, but I do need to try and install new programs almost every week (and often throw them away soon afterwards). And I don't mind waiting if I knew it was going to compile on the first try, but it is hardly ever the case: I need to constantly come back, check the errors, fix them, repeat.

@Rishika to me, as an european, the tone of your answer sounds very Indian. If you are writing to other Indians, you may want to follow your supervisor's advise, but to people in Europe or USA, it will sound weird, but not "wrong" or offensive in any case (I am afraid our normal emails may sound rude to Indians).

@DavidWallace if the question is "how can I shoot myself in the foot", the answer "don't do it" is acceptable.

I have done 12 suitcases with British Airways. Definitely possible, and it was not too hectic.

Working on your own is a good way of getting a good grip on stuff, but don't dismiss the experience: seeing how a more experienced person approaches the problem can teach you a lot too.

I disagree with the downvotes. It is a good question, even though it is a very bad idea to implement it.

@M.Alaggan I don't know the law in France, but in Spain if the police demands you to identify yourself, and you cannot produce enough documents to satisfy the officer, you will be invited (not arrested) to go to the station and get yourself identified there, where they can presumably access your residence application. You would only be arrested if you refuse to go.

@pay I have seen campaigns to promote nursing degrees to males.

@Iker and bleeding all over the place.

A rightful signal that goes against the law would be to redirect traffic through the left lane, in the opposite direction. That is probably the kind of situation the testers were thinking about.

Regarding #3, Stockholm University recently declared that the first salary for PhD students was indeed too low and raised it 70%, and other universities in Sweden did the same. Sometimes, there is someone looking after us!
Jul 26, 2016 10:14
@AndyPutman is it, though? I am sure Caltech can get enough funding to pay competitive salaries to its PhD students, but since they will get them anyway, they can pay crap, and hire a load more of them.

Jul 17, 2016 16:29
@R.. I interpret it as an unfortunate joke in company of people that know you are joking won't be as much of a problem as in front of people that don't know whether you are joking or not.

Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Conversely, miracles can be reasonably considered as indistinguishable from a technology more advanced than ours.

@AgapwIesu the thing is, we don't know if the student actually is Asperger, or just looks like it to the OP's friend's unqualified opinion. And note that all the information you have is a third hand retelling from non experts. For example, a key piece seems to be that the student is doing this to show friendship, but I don't know how reliable this piece of information is.
May 4, 2016 01:37
@AgapwIesu and really, how can the professor be sure that the student has understood that what he is doing is wrong, and all the things he is doing wrong? I certainly wouldn't know for sure.

May 4, 2016 01:34
@DarrinThomas the student.

I think you need professional help here. A psychologist should have a better chance of explaining it.

Mar 23, 2016 13:41
@NateEldredge you should make that an answer.

Feb 13, 2016 11:58
You could also try to do a PhD in Europe or USA (and getting a salary for it). Since you are a doctor, a common alternative around here is to get a clinical position and do your PhD research alongside (provided your degree is recognised, of course).

Jan 19, 2016 23:31
@G.Bach probably, Female Tank needs a certain number of publications to get her PhD. The work she did before doesn't count, and therefore, it doesn't appear on her publication list for the degree.
Jan 19, 2016 23:31
Regarding doing it in front of others: people will soon notice and ignore it. I know a person who is always pointing out how he can do it better, and how his way was always better. Every time he raises his hand, everybody else rolls their eyes.

Snakes vary a lot. This may be true where you live, but may not necessarily apply everywhere else. Snake expertise is not an exportable commodity.

Is one or two different glyphs really an issue to understand the text? It would be good to make them aware of that, so they are extra careful when using x and n in the same equation. Apart from that, consider it a slightly worse handwriting.

Just to put things in perspective, statistically, most abused children are attacked by someone close, a relative, a teacher, or a friend. Attacks by strangers are much less common.

Sep 23, 2015 22:35
@PeteL.Clark I think it is not in the books because it is not in the normal way of thinking of a physicist. Since we are modelling reality, solutions usually exist, and are unique; convergence can be handwaved away noticing that the next term is orders of magnitude smaller... all the things that make a mathematician's teeth cringe of imprecission. There are cases where one has to be careful and check, but most of the time, we don't bother because the equations are well behaved enough (and of course, we get bitten when we assume what is false!).

May 29, 2015 09:33
@KyleKanos mostly old astrophysicists. But of course you can find anything.

Mar 11, 2015 13:02
@JamesRyan Moriarty's question is a good one. Where can we get equivalent machines for a cheaper price?
Mar 11, 2015 13:02
They are not status symbols, they are just very fine hardware. And they are not more expensive than other brands at comparable quality (Sony Vaio or Alienware for example). Equally, buying a high end server from HP is much more expensive than buying parts and assembling it yourself, but then you have to deal with it if they don't work. They are also *nix that works out of the box, without giving too much trouble. [And, after this, I must say I don't personally like Windows for developing and using a Mac usually gets me on my nerves.]

@Compass definitely. Plus, on my side, at least, the kerning of the fonts is all messed up.

Here we have an answer at a score of -11, but it is still visible (not even grayed out), even for unregistered users: academia.stackexchange.com/a/40432/12587 Is this expected? Has there been a change lately?

Is there a spike in spam posts, or is it just that I am looking more than usual?
