Honorverse's Treecats (essentially 6 legged bobcat-sized felines) end up being way more intelligent than humans knew in the beginning of the series, yet their primary weapons were always the claws and teeth. IIRC, that is, it's been a couple decades.

Wonder if Israel has ever considered only doing exactly to Hamas/Gaza what Hamas has done to them? ( i.e. Hamas launches ~5000 rocket into Israel, Israel responds only in kind, launching ~5000 rockets into Gaza) They would still be condemned due to the increased concentration of space/people in Gaza, but at least they'd be able to claim more of a moral high-ground.

Because I don't believe in this level of naiveté, I firmly believe it was written to push an agenda, and so have VtC it.
Mar 1, 2023 12:52
I have been unable to word my comment or meta question in a way that the OP won't claim it is a personal attack on him, while I am firmly convinced it is not. The OP wrote the questions "as if he is naive to a level I simply cannot fathom cannot be possible."

I've VtC "https://politics.stackexchange.com/questions/78463/help-me-understand-the-context-behind-the-its-okay-to-be-white-question-in-a" and it took me thinking about it for over a day to finally decide to do so. I've also started to write an explanatory comments four separate times, and actually started to write a meta 'question' about it, but ended up discarding that as well.

@IAG what is your position in relation to this question, the professor and the hypothetical student? Are you a TA? A student? Why I am asking: if you are a student, how do you know what the customary answer is?

Apr 25, 2024 14:39
Also, as a lawyer, you'll have an office, and on your wall you will display your diploma for clients to see.... hate for you to lose a potential source of income because they don't trust your diploma is real... i.e. If I saw a new doctor's diploma that had ", Class Clown" on it, I'd thank them for their time and go elsewhere.

Mar 29, 2024 15:34
@Kevin My first thought after reading that article is the students should have located the professor's own thesis and do the same thing. Then when it is shown that the professor used ChapGPT (before it even existed) demand that the professor have their tenure revoked. (yes, this IS tongue in cheek.)

Oct 27, 2023 14:06
What caused me to make my original statement, that you responded to was the fact that I am disgusted with how the world seems to be slamming Israel on their (over) reaction and lack of caring for the Palestinian innocent civilians, and no one is slamming Hamas for their original firing of 5000+ rockets. Yes, Israel has/is over-reacting, but darn it, Hamas going from 100-ish rockets per day to 5000+ should itself be just as loudly condemned.
Oct 27, 2023 14:03
@JoeW (responding to your comment to me in agora) Of course not. Two wrongs don't make a right, and all that. I'm not Israeli, nor am I Jewish. I think of myself as a dis-interested viewer (although I'm incredibly interested in a conflict which has the possibility of spilling over into a world-wide one.) I'm not (or I should say, I don't think I am) biased either for or against Israel, or for or against the Palestinians.

Also, those of you who are keying on Johns-305's mention of sunscreen as if that were the sum total of his advice, learn to read. The key to that paragraph isn't the example given (i.e. sunscreen) but the statement "your time in Iceland will have much bigger impact potential than the journey" and then his real advice is to follow the "leave no trace" principles, one of which might be to change the type of sunscreen used. That isn't being given as the only advice, it's simply an example of the overall advice.

I disagree with all of the nay-sayers of this answer. Although I'm not sure the chart if helpful, what he says it on point. The OP asks what is a better way to get to Iceland without flying, becuase they are worried about their carbon footprint. (At least that is how I am interpreting it.) The issue for me is, flying should not be so quickly discarded. The commercial flights are going there, whether or not the OP uses them. So, the OP is choosing to not use a commercial flight already going there and using some other means, which may or may not a env friendly.

FA, I just verified with my wife, who is a senior financial person within AAFES, the Army and Air Force Exchange System (Basically the on-post stores at all Army posts and AF bases, they (are required) to take $50 and $100 bills upon presentation, by a customer in payment for anything, including a pack of gum, with the requirement that the bill(s) be verified (I won't go into how). In addition, they take $1 coins, 50c pieces and $2 bills as well.

I know a couple who own a 'Chinese-food restaurant' in my neighborhood, and were only taking home the standard pay for their positions, and all of the rest of the profit was being saved to open a second restaurant. They were, in fact, living off of waitress/tip and cook pay.
May 4, 2023 10:59
I'm honestly curious how you know how "much they make" as well as how much "they" make. You don't know how they, as a married couple, are taking home pay, nor whether or not they are taking home pay for their functions within the restaurant. Perhaps they are taking a large percentage of the profits as a joined couple, or perhaps she is earning a wage as the waitress, day-to-day, and they take profit as a quarterly thing, or perhaps everything goes back into the restaurant EXCEPT for their cook's and waitress' wages.... you simply can't know.

all we have is the OPS opinion on the family member. Early dementia? There is no such thing. There is early-onset dementia, which this family member does NOT have. E-O D occurs before 50. the family member is 70, right? That's not early. What they MAY have is Mild, Moderate or Severe. And all of those REQUIRE diagnosis from a medical professional. The OP isn't one. Or has not claimed to be.

I've a question I honestly don't know the answer to. If one of the offenders were a TA, this would be an issue, perhaps a legal one, as the TA has a power imbalance over a student under their care. What is the power imbalance in a student who leads a tutoring effort? Is there any (legal) imbalance of power?

Jan 20, 2023 15:21
@AlexP You are quite correct. I knew I had seen this before (I think in research for a politics.se question, but according to this page, from 1789-1849, all total, the US Federal Budget had receipts of 1.160 Billion, with outlays of 1.09 Billion. Total. For all of those years. The first single year we had receipts of over a billion wasn't until 1917. In 1910 the US made 676 million, spent 694 million, and had a deficit of 18 million. Spending all they could on this island would still be a pittance.

At least you're here asking... you could be like what I imagine a lot of "parents" are... either abusive or checking out. I didn't have an abusive childhood, I just had a non-existent father, until he realized I could return an "adult" conversation and by that time, I had checked out of being his son. Might never have repaired that relationship if not for my girlfriend, later my wife. Too negative and not an answer to what you want, so just a comment on what not to do.

Jan 4, 2023 16:32
After re-reading your question, I think we need slightly more information. Is the TA requirement in addition to the RA, or in place of (a portion of)?

@Mykola then when all of the commercial airliners have the digital radios (?) what do they do when they have to land at an airport without one, or how do non-commercial airplanes communicate with commercial planes, etc. etc. You are adding expense and effort and more things to worry about as a pilot for no decent return on investment. How many accidents happen with the manual system as it is? All you are really doing is taking away jobs for no real gain on safety or throughput.

Forget the Carribean/Cuba, they're going to be evacuating/preparing as well... The islanders are going to concerned with their own survival. Islands with high enough ground (e.g. St Kitts) will have their population moving up, while those that don't will themselves be evacuating prior to the expected tsunami and its reflections.
