Obviously there is a high risk of her getting sick, consider for instance if the princess is Native American and the John Smith lives in Europe... But that is to say nothing of the prognosis of the sickness, which given the ready availability of antibiotics and other medicine, should not be particularly pessimistic.

Jul 23, 2017 02:58
Why are the other party members letting her get away with this again? She is ruining business opportunities they could all benefit from. Any normal person would tell her to cut it out, or just not let her be present in important discussions. Or at least start deceiving NPCs in ways that actually benefit them.

What are you planning to do if the student can't afford to bring a laptop, or if they are physically unable to lug it around all day long on campus after bringing it just for your class?

Mar 1, 2017 09:33
Doesn't the US Visa application literally ask you if you will overstay? If you answer "yes", it will probably bring up a text box saying "Explain:", and you can explain.

Feb 22, 2017 20:54
I don't think it is uncontroversial to say that "vaccinologists" do more good than string theorists. Also, I don't think you've justified the assumption that you will be able to even be a good doctor if you do it anyway "for the greater good" even though you hate it.

Jan 21, 2017 05:18
What are you asking? How to con the man into selling his work for less than its worth? He doesn't think it's worth his while, either pay him more or find someone else.

Nov 21, 2016 19:56
Also, if this student is doing so well on exams, how is he getting a C? Are you assuming he will get 0 for a project that is 60% of the grade or something? Or do you think he will do very badly on the project even though he has such deep understanding?
Nov 21, 2016 19:56
I think this question needs to specify on what you personally consider the grades to measure. Is it supposed to be about mastering the subject matter, or slavish adherence to bureaucratic rules? Once you specify that, the rest should be easy. FWIW, I believe homework is a cheap trick used by administrator who in an effort to spend even less money on teaching, outsource part of the education by essentially telling students to "figure it out" on their own. However, in my view I care only about learning the subject, not ancillary benefits like what @OswalVeblen points out.

Oct 30, 2016 01:58
@MassimoOrtolano I don't understand why you say "come on now". But anyhow, you said you never met anyone who looked down on people, you have now been proven wrong by counterexample.
Oct 30, 2016 01:58
@MassimoOrtolano Come on now. Ever heard of James Watson?
Oct 30, 2016 01:58
I expect that the most upvoted answers will give you only one side of the story, ie. the rosy one that everyone wants to be true: "In academia no one is arrogant, more talented people don't think less of their inferiors, and a talented person is obligated to cooperate with others." which has quite a bit of truth to it. Of course you won't hear much about strong positive discrimination in favor of talent, and in-group bias among the talented (who often are also influential and powerful) because nobody wants to admit it exists, especially on this site.

So are you worried about them entrusting the password to someone untrustworthy (phisher), or you? Because if latter, you could just not leak it and solve the problem.

Sep 22, 2016 19:58
There are area effect spells that cause damage regardless of where you die. This explanation doesn't really work.

Sep 20, 2016 19:50
@lafemmecosmique If you want to understand why people are bothered by "events not about them", examine your own reaction to a hypothetical men only meeting.

Sep 12, 2016 10:39
The premise of "knowing exactly how to assemble the required components" is very hard to accept. I don't think anyone knows how to create a CPU from scratch, the engineers only know how to work with other manufacturers, they understand that all the components come from somewhere, but I doubt many know exactly how you go from sand to computer to the point of being able to do it, without factories, and only one billionth of the people.

Sep 11, 2016 20:33
@DonaldHobson Oh come now, surely he can just make it from an asteroid or something.

Sep 9, 2016 02:40
Yes, I am indeed asking about a partnership with the money manager, with the small caveat that the aim of the partnership is specifically investment (or speculation if you will) in markets (as opposed to, for instance, running a retail operation).
Sep 9, 2016 02:37
No, I am specifically asking about an arrangement structured so that the manager makes a profit if and only if I profit, in proportion to how much I profit, and likewise if I lose money, the manager also loses money, again in proportion to my losses.
Sep 9, 2016 02:22
As for the supposed risk of fraud being blown out of proportion, again, I'm not saying managers are honest, or dishonest, or incompetent. I'm saying that I want a particular incentive scheme, regardless of whether it turns out better or worse than the more common options.
Sep 9, 2016 02:21
Also, for the last part, yes, if you took the question as being about capital preservation then that isn't quite right. I'm not really concerned about preserving capital at all (if I was, like you say I'd just buy CDs) - rather I want the manager to have a real incentive to act in my own interests.
Sep 9, 2016 02:18
And I think fundamentally this is a reasonable arrangement, since other sectors do it. For instance, there are real estate management companies that will take your house, rent it out, deal with almost every problem, in exchange for taking some fraction of the rental income. They will thus accept sharing losses because if they fail to find a good tenant, for instance, they won't collect their fee, so the incentive structure is reasonable.
Sep 9, 2016 02:16
@quid Well here is the issue with "just investing 50% of the money": I would still have to make the trades, and research the assets I'm buying. I would also have to learn about trading/investing first. What I want is somebody who will invest my money for me, and be in the same boat as me as far as profit/loss is concerned.
Sep 9, 2016 02:13
@quid I don't wish to get into an extended argument, but I feel like you've misrepresented my question and haven't really answered it. I'll hold on a bit for other answers.
Sep 9, 2016 02:13
@quid Of course it is different than buying puts, otherwise the answer to my question would be "buy puts". But you claimed nobody will insure against the market being down (which is in fact not what I was asking), and I pointed out that puts do exactly this.
Sep 9, 2016 02:13
@CharlesE.Grant Because they want more leverage?
Sep 9, 2016 02:13
If they won't take on the loss, then it's not like what I describe at all, is it? Also, there are lots of people who insure against market decline, such as SPY put writers.

Sep 8, 2016 14:57
Oh and, since I brought up nature - even nature plays it safe and doesn't rely on face alone for high-security contexts.
Sep 8, 2016 14:57
@NeilMcGuigan Uh, salt the hash? Also, that's a strawman - biometrics is a password that becomes very difficult to submit (if properly done) if it's not yours. FWIW I think biometrics is dumb too, but it's not that dumb - I mean hey, nature uses it.

Aug 18, 2016 02:00
So, it's basically a large, unwieldy and unsafe taser?

Aug 10, 2016 16:35
@gnasher729 Where can I report violations of rule #0? And can I do it in bulk?

Aug 9, 2016 13:16
Amusingly enough, if you're going back more than 400 years or so, Latin (even what little was learned in childhood or gleaned through etymology) might be more more useful than English. Not only has it been a viable lingua franca for a very long time, but for much of that time it was dead and has changed a lot less than English as well. Also, Germans and the French would have a slightly easier time in analogous situations.

Jul 31, 2016 04:21
What's the point of this? Since it's an execution, the victim won't be able to go around saying how painful it was, so it's wasted effort. You could just have actors pretending to be in pain for propaganda purposes.

Jul 26, 2016 10:14
@john Yup, I deleted my comment since I decided to write an answer (with that link), and, well...
Jul 26, 2016 10:14
How much do you think they should be paid?
Jul 26, 2016 10:14
Also the close is awful. There's a question on the site about why all academic salaries are too low, that's not too broad, but if you ask about why a subset of academic salaries is too low, then it becomes too broad? Come on, mods.

Jul 22, 2016 19:44
@DanBron It didn't really come across as friendly at all. Every sentence you wrote made it abundantly clear that you regard me as some kind of moron who needs to be "shown the ropes of the site". Even after I played along with your suggestions, you still continued with it, going so far as to act like you're teaching me life skills as well.
Jul 22, 2016 19:19
This has pretty much convinced me to stop using the site after this question.
Jul 22, 2016 19:19
It's more that I have noticed specifically on this site I get a lot of very patronizing comments.
Jul 22, 2016 18:54
@DanBron I have a question for you. Is your style of commentary an accepted practice on ELU? Or would you consider yourself an unusual case?
Jul 22, 2016 18:53
@DanBron So how has this improved the question?
Jul 22, 2016 18:53
@DanBron The products of my research are already explained in my second paragraph.
Jul 22, 2016 18:53
@DanBron Clearly what I have already included is not enough for you. What exactly would it take for you to be satisfied?
Jul 22, 2016 18:53
@HotLicks I have researched it myself.

Jul 20, 2016 11:59
A natural evolution of this is also to award XP at the end of each session based on how much has been accomplished.

Jun 22, 2016 12:24
I take advantage of these periods by browsing StackExchange while I wait and improving my productivity by reading numerous insightful question/answers. Of course, now the delay is 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds... But oh well, at least I'm being productive!

May 26, 2016 16:30
One wonders about the opposite case: For instance, assuming no prerequisites, why not stretch out a single course to several years with very little work per week? The marketing department can call it "massively parallel education".

Apr 18, 2016 12:55
Okay, I can buy that maybe your mom figured out how to make the ISP cough up the logs or something, but how on Earth would the uni eavesdrop on the network of a private company? And why? To me, the fact that you claim both your mom AND the university is spying on you shows you have failed to rationally evaluate the situation.

Apr 14, 2016 14:07
I suppose the advantage of the Legal option is that it actually exists... And suggests a nice plot hook about a Californian vampire who decides to visit Texas.

Apr 6, 2016 23:37
@JimmyJames Well, it is the OP's own assumption that this company's CEO is not allowed to circumvent these "proper channels". For all we know the company is set up to specifically allow this sort of thing de jure. It is certainly de facto allowed, given that, you know, he's the CEO.
Apr 6, 2016 23:37
I wonder what the CEO's side looks like. "I saw an employee do something wrong, so I thought I would correct the error right there since I care about this company that I invested so much time and money in. But to my surprise, the employee complained that I didn't go through the proper channels!"
