@KeithMorrison why not? it quite a good decorative element, sure there will be pipes as in a regular city, nothing special and spacey or else - like regular stuff every apartment house has in industrial countries, in a city setting. U imagine something, idk what, but not a space station aka space habitat where million(s) or 1000's of people are permanently living and intended to live for foreseeable(for them) future until they die from age. What you imagine it is not even submarine stuff, it god knows what - some sci-fi mush from movies, I guess, as if they did a good job - they don't.
Nov 13, 2021 03:31
@KeithMorrison "You live near a water supply line?" - wow, how bad it should be to live next to water pipes - I guess yours are far far far away from you, lol, water well for life, man

without intercepting in jump state, being able to kick ships out of it - there are only two main venues for piracy - next to departure points aka in system high sec space which is not so much realistic and considering external treat aka aliens in existence that sec space should be good enough - so not an option, chances are much worse than for regular crime. Another venue is moles, hacking - so ship you need jumps were you need it - meaning delivery to your home/base no resistance as such, no combat, no typical piracy activity - you just drove a car away type stuff and it emerged in poland.

Despite that general answer is historical reasons, and that most of the answers are bad inventing a plot for op, but I would prefer to keep this q open as indeed it would be better provide better reasons or point out problems of such activity, I mean difficulties it has - better answers would help to create better fiction instead settling on low-quality reasons, which accepted answer is an example of.

Just answering title - yeah, I learned english watching cartoons and reading linux man pages. I mean - I had nobody to speak to, or interact with someone in english, so quite close match, there are some moments I ommit, but. Can't say I have high fuency, but I do not use it every day. AlexP answer is good enough, just my few cents on the topic.

Sep 26, 2021 19:23
Chill out man, this time reopen party won, do not ruin our success, lol. And yeah join reopen resistance. On merrits of the q, on surface it quite provocative, and even if I support the desire to know and work on that, but I have an impression that your expectatiins are too high(maybe) - expectations in finding out "the truth". So as premise/ideas you have on your mind which lead to you so easily brush aside valid shapes and constructions. Shapes are also a function of purpose and technologies available. And if tech advanced enough then one can have flying castle or a tree cuz he likes it.
Sep 26, 2021 19:23
VTO: existing answer, from PapperClip, shows a way to approach the problem of answering the question. Identifying some valid reasons for ship design approaches has reusability value and is not neccessarly futile.
Sep 26, 2021 19:23
idk, relaced hard science tag with science-based, the q has nothing to do with hard science, or else pick International Space Station and be happy - it hard scientific as it gets, no more.

Sep 23, 2021 15:09
Vincent comment is rigth about calculations. Source of mistake is that electricity is about 1/6 of total energy(if I remember it correctly), take look at wiki total energy consumption world wide for exact number. So, it will require more nuclear reactors. Which require then full cycle of fuel and fast neutron reactors which will be breeders. We are close to have it, so not a big deal. Modular reactors yeah good stuff.
Sep 23, 2021 15:09
@quarague cheap solutions is what got us there in the first place. solar panels rob plants for place to absorb stuff, lol, including those on the roofs.
Sep 23, 2021 15:09
"-12,800 megatons / year" - hope we can save some for cows then, like cows. basically total says - go nuclear and things are done. definitely a much better answer than those before, that's for sure.

defining it as parasitic relationships was correct, symbiotic ones it when both sides get something useful for each other which is not the case with the brain-eating situation, at least as it looks like, so far, in your q. also pursuing that pheromone construction increases the complexity of situation drastically, and you pretty much can handwave at this point, not entirely impossible but problems and all that p to describe it in an answer is pretty much unrealistic. even if someone could produce such an answer on wb(unlikely), I guess, it would be hard to understand such an answer.
Sep 20, 2021 04:36
at this point, you asking for a sky.
Sep 20, 2021 04:36
There are limits on size of molecules for pheromones, if they are airborne like scent. Airborn particles can be bigger than molecules, but it defines speed of propagation, distance, and in a sense coverage area/properties, penetrative abilities. What you describe is not impossible, scent may have properties to trigger eggs to develop, but due limited mass it carry limited information, so it not reproduction, it a signal that inhibits(it may be a necessity as well, to be able to have hosts in the future) or encourages growth. Few sligth touches can make your setting better.

Sep 18, 2021 03:02
By variety I mean use cases, sizes, strategies etc. Do not know a lot about slings, but know a little of theory. But few miles - eh - in wich way, even with 1/3g. In general I would not bother if it makes sense or not. It is an interesting idea, and it indeed has certain pros. Just make it happen and try to simulate and investigate what would happen - it can be interesting. A brick is a weapon of proletariat, so handwave the reason and that they still have power to resist if they lose with this strategy, like it was distraction plan - disguise for real actions and plan etc. Or a win.
Sep 18, 2021 03:02
Slinging explosives, yeah that a good one. Couple miles away, eeeh, low precision will require a looot of ammo. Those arab rockets they are terror weapon not so much damage dealers(on mars it may work actually as damage dealers - decompression and all that). No no no - you have to define the situation they are in and then make a plan of operation. Or if you like the slings and such to be used, then you have to define the situation in the way which helps to justify the use. Also it seems you imagine much greater variety of sling forms than a regular person - examples could be added to the q
Sep 18, 2021 03:02
@Kilisi main problem is that tactical situation is not clearly defined. A checkpoint from where to where. How far from checkpoint you have to infiltrate, how long that infiltration takes, against whom(how equipt they are). Have seen video about guys with files making working replicas of semi auto pistols, does not require that much space. Smugling is also form of art, small forces just can't have super tigth control, because even big ones fail to do so. So basically you ask for operation plan, but not enough intel is provided. (More like comment under first answer, but decided to put it here)
Sep 18, 2021 03:02
No, not a great idea, it maybe possible in some specific curcumstances, some operation, ambush. But having a distance fight even with only pistol armed forces - not a great idea. Close the distance and then difference between semi auto and a good shot from crossbow is not so big. Break in armory - get proper weapons and drawn enemy in own blood. // how hostile is the other side, is it civil disagreement or they ready for war.
Sep 18, 2021 03:02
They should have good suits to be able to use slings efficiently, so as the thing provides(or should) provide some additional protection. Also it would be nice to make more clear against whom they apply that force, and what is power disposition - insurgence, police, some military(bases or what) from earthlings or what. Also alahakbar vehicles seems to be more effective than slings. Flying drones are possible on mars, and making explosives not impossible. Also making guns and gun powder is not impossible either. Etc. Slings may be effective, but are you ready for 1 to 10 losses at least etc.

Sep 15, 2021 16:41
would be interesting to know reasons for singlehandled closing or meta post? worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/212735/…
Sep 9, 2021 21:45
@AndyD273 it not losing, at day 10% used for city, about 10% accomulate for nigth, about 80% for diferent jobs, like expanding that energy production, launching stuff etc. It just that city is a small percentage in total energy budget and not an obstacle for reaching goals and development.
Sep 9, 2021 17:25
and in essence I mean, if means are chosen right, energy problem is one of the easiest problems on the moon
Sep 9, 2021 17:24
*not impossible
Sep 9, 2021 17:07
no impossible, equaterial system of collecting and transfer energy is what your city needs )))
Sep 9, 2021 17:06
as canyons goes, craters may be enough, for a city, but depends on the size of it, 10-50-100m depth pits may be enough - there not that many flat spaces it most of the time some elevation and slopes tumbling - and you have city structure which has to copupe with it - non-trivial enough - it definitely not a rover level problem
Sep 9, 2021 17:00
just make your city consuming less than 10% of day power then it not that difficult to keep lights lit. Aluminium burning in oxygen also an option to store energy, basically any rock decomposing is your energy battery process.
Sep 9, 2021 14:50
in the same series of useless questions - it would be interesting to look at an equatorial railroad or something like that - how deep are the places where bridges have to be built and how long are the tunnels to dig
Sep 9, 2021 14:48
and which one is good depends on or defined/influenced by - what is the goal? which results are the goal.
Sep 9, 2021 14:47
@JourneymanGeek sure, 1/6g helps here too. Making or bringing big machines on the moon poses its own unique challenges. The whole problem has multiple variables/sliders you can change and get all kind of interesting situations.
Sep 9, 2021 11:49
I mean proposal is possible, more like yep cool curious fact, but it a solution for no problem.
Sep 9, 2021 11:49
But in general long day allows to make a lot of things, and it just restricts nigth activity to some fraction of day activity(5-10%) - just choose what's important - there is no problem to keep that important stuff running.
Sep 9, 2021 11:47
Have your staciinar bases, or make zap zap next to your massdriver at any speed you need
Sep 9, 2021 11:46
Just make a road, make it massdriver. Allocate one line(or two) of that massdriver for energy transfer.
Sep 9, 2021 11:44
Which multiplier is reasonable in the case no idea, it depends.
Sep 9, 2021 11:44
Most obivious outcome is detours, probably 1.5x of 16kmh is enough. But it is a system for something - it has to have time to do that something and time for repair and all that
Sep 9, 2021 11:41
But wheels do limit where thise things can go - it requires to have continious(uninterrupted) path, compared to some walking solutions. It may be big deal which also depends on size of those crafts
Sep 9, 2021 11:38
10mph with wheels not a problem, lunar rover had it, or something like that. Have to have road circular one and such - won't defend it, it was more like exaggeration, or it makes more sense in more specific situation
Sep 9, 2021 09:02
@AncientSwordRage necessity of road is determined by if there is a circular route which is suitable for them to move(walk or drive), probably there are such routes, but it definetly not direct, so speed has to be higher

Sep 15, 2021 14:08
@Pelinore stop it, u do not get the q - pass it then - it just practical problem of syncing the numbers and in more general sence how to establish coherent distributions. Potencial answer could be also historical example on proportions and such. Or an example how to do so with modern data - to show the way for op. If you have any grasp in the tooic - problems are obivious immediatly, sorting out and syncing stuff is what time consuming and a work in the case.
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
In general the question is quite good, provides relevant information and description, compared to many other q's wb gets, which are just trash, this question is great. But it requires a lot of meticulous work to streigthen the numbers. Current and historical statistics, namely proportions is the source of information to fix the numbers.
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Add \@ before nick if you ask some one, I guess sources it was to me - what I like about usa it that bureacracy they have and statistics of all kinds they produce - usually I google stuff as usual and it often lands to some gov site, not sure on that topic, but it possible for such thing to happen - "prices for food usa" - yep second link some gov ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findin‌gs not sure it has absolute data, but if it has u take it, not changes, so as there are other links. Same look for wealth proportions. And screw it even more for aristocrats.
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Cl= class. cl2-3 they have too much money, cl6-7 too little, also aristocrats cl7 have to have more than cl6. Cl3(poor) can have 18kg of chicken per day - maan you do not need any roof with such digestive system. Cows compared to chickes have to be more expensive. For food as base proportions take current prices and maybe adjust then later a bit. Same with wealth of classes, cl7 and cl4 there is just no way to be just 10x difference between those. Aristocrats hires an army at least cl3 at least 100(0) people it already a lot and it not a major expense. Yeah numbers are screwed and a lot.

Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Do not bother with deletion, most likely because of existing answer. It does not matter
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
I was quite impressed by that variation - step by step and every tool and stone age - like it a lot and it somewhat what I try(kinda) to do atm, veeery veeery slowly, with veeery veeery little success, but with some ideas - so it was kinda sad for me that wb rejected it so strongly, lol. So it naturally a little bit exciting to see someone persistant enough about that topic, lol. But all depends on what you really need - if detailed thing prepare for tons of work and it won't be perfect anyway. Typically ppl choose metalls, electricity and bam handwavium/profit from there
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Also, another thing to add - you looking for bootstrapping topic - did you look the questions and answers on it here on wb - you are not the first user with that topic, and not the last one. Point doing so is not that you get your answer - but for some reason it looks like you a bit too fresh on bootstrapping topic and do not understand how deep is the hole - those questions and answers can help you to fill some gaps in perception - the rabbit hole is reeeally deeep.
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Also take look at this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_hardware_projects (just to see if there is something interesting to you) and this specifically this one en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Source_Ecology dive in it, but not expect too much, even if it is 18yo project achievements are modest, last time I checked - but it may be a good start for you.
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Reddit has worldbuilding sub, if I recall correctly. But yes discussing and olpinions fishing and feedbacks providing is not this place. "using science, geography and culture to construct imaginary worlds and settings." - this is the motto. opinions sure are unavoidable but. look fantasy.se test the waters they more on creativity side - but also see what fits what not fits there. If you find place for casual discussion of ideas, then ping me, can't wait for to mock all those genetic engeneers and alike without getting a jailcard, lol. Mm, take look at 4chan and alike maybe there is a place
Sep 15, 2021 14:08
Anonymous boards there are lesser known as well - I had the best time on our local one when I was establishing my concepts - but there was board which was a match and it had regular idea wars and all that on topics I needed - tons of fun and no limits on how you put your sentences, lol

Sep 15, 2021 13:56
@AlexP they were not primitives, that 100%. Stone age wasn't primitive (attempting atm reach that advanced stone age technology and I miss a lot of tools, "primitive" regular ones like drill press) but 300 people - all adults, no elderly and children(if that is the case, and if it is not) is quite sizable workforce. They do not have support all tech, but selfsufficient subset of those they need, soo I would not dive deeper that 1800's. Even if it just 50 ppl who have skills.// However the q does not make it easy to get what's going on here - moon, ships, etc. Hey, OP, where is context, wasup?

Sep 15, 2021 13:43
3rd version of comment, idk how to formulate it and AlexP comment about 4 causes is good. Utopian things are flat not because there is no conflics, but because it is hard to make utopias and people fail doing that for way before Dante. Investigate. Do not think which nasty thing to add, but test things(4 causes), deduce, simulate in the work, see what is the result. It not about fantasy but about investigating setting/potencial reality and try to see the outcome. Last sentence is a thing you can investigate. Do better in - what do they need to it be resistant against that, there are options.
