@Dom Replied to your badge suggestion. Let me know what you think.
Mar 31, 2016 19:26
@ToddWilcox Yup. That's it. It's the icon for your "favorite" website. Initially created so you could see them in bookmark lists.
Mar 31, 2016 19:25
@ToddWilcox "Fav" as in "Favicon"?
Mar 31, 2016 19:25
@RoryAlsop Hmmm. I know how to it with dev tools. Not sure otherwise. It'll be about 30-45 minutes until the new icons are up though.
Mar 31, 2016 19:19
Thanks. Ok. Let me update this favicon one last time. 😀
Mar 31, 2016 19:16
I hope I was able to do that
Mar 31, 2016 19:16
That's why I posted the thread soliciting ideas — I wanted to make sure the design represented you, not my limited viewpoint on music. :)
Mar 31, 2016 19:15
Personally I would consider my music knowledge very beginning. I play the acoustic and bass guitar. I started a music minor in college, so I had a few semesters of Aural Skills and Music Theory. Unfortunately Aural Skills kicked my butt and it was killing my GPA, so I had to drop the minor. So I have some understanding of theory and practice — but I wouldn't call myself a musician.
Mar 31, 2016 19:13
Yes! Definitely! It always help when people get involved in the process.
Mar 31, 2016 19:11
@MatthewRead No problem. That's why I'm here. Some communities engage more than others. While Music might be a smaller community, I've received far more feedback and engagement then the other community I helped design.
Mar 31, 2016 19:07
@RoryAlsop Even evil, mad unicorns? :)
Mar 31, 2016 19:06
@RoryAlsop Isn't that amazing?
Mar 31, 2016 19:06
Not sure. Let me ask a dev to see.
Mar 31, 2016 19:06
@MatthewRead Ok. I'll see if I can give them a special icon just for that button. Maybe all reversed out (i.e. all white)
Mar 31, 2016 19:04
Ok. Well — Personally I was never crazy about the OH-WOW-ITS-DEEP-DARK-PURPLE favicon, so if most people like the previous version with a slightly saturated yellow, then that's fine with me and we'll make it
Mar 31, 2016 19:01
Oh, I just went there
Mar 31, 2016 18:57
Subjective guidelines results in subjective results. :)
Mar 31, 2016 18:57
:)
Mar 31, 2016 18:56
"Make it sound more like Bach"
Mar 31, 2016 18:56
Well if people liked the original (for the most part), I'm inclined to keep it, modifying it as necessary. You'll never please everyone.
Mar 31, 2016 18:52
There's a 16px version
Mar 31, 2016 18:52
Mar 31, 2016 18:51
@ToddWilcox What about using the original one, but with a more saturated yellow?
Mar 31, 2016 18:51
Mar 31, 2016 18:48
Is the problem with the original that the white is too small?
Mar 31, 2016 18:47
True
Mar 31, 2016 18:47
Haha
Mar 31, 2016 18:46
I'd have to play with it some to make sure it looks good at small sizes.
Mar 31, 2016 18:45
Better?
Mar 31, 2016 18:45
Mar 31, 2016 18:40
@ToddWilcox Hmmm. I have another idea. Give me a minute :)
Mar 31, 2016 18:39
Mar 31, 2016 18:38
@ToddWilcox Would you keep the previous yellow background and color pattern (W W B) with the new shape?
Mar 31, 2016 18:37
If you went with the 2-color version, there would be no background color at the 32px/16px sizes. So it would be only be purple shapes that look like an M
Mar 31, 2016 18:36
If you would like this changed to the other 2-color version, I can. Let me know and I'll update it. The reversed favicon is fine, though it does stand out from other community favicons (but that's not necessarily a bad thing).
Mar 31, 2016 18:35
Mar 31, 2016 18:35
While the team generally like this direction more than the previous mark, some were still concerned that we were losing something by dropping the white shapes. I didn't really have a strong opinion on it, so I updated it to what you see today.
Mar 31, 2016 18:33
So I did this version, and that's the version I was going to roll out. Since the mark was all purple/dark black, you could show it without the yellow background, like in the hot questions sidebar.
Mar 31, 2016 18:32
Mar 31, 2016 18:32
I can't make it look exactly as he mentioned. 1) That's a copyrighted logomark and copying it would be in violation. 2) It's also very clean and precise, which isn't quite the feeling we were aiming for. Still it's an idea, especially about making the M more purposeful.
Mar 31, 2016 18:30
Also Andrew's comment was interesting.
Mar 31, 2016 18:30
Great design!.. however, I have some kind of mixed feeling for the favicon (which I believe is from this suggestion); it's kind of hard to guess what's that exactly for non-regulars. Perhaps "3 white piano keys with 2 short piano black keys" would be better to convey about music, and it also looks like a letter "m" (perhaps like this?) — Andrew T. 5 hours ago
Mar 31, 2016 18:30
So this is what we started with. Some mentioned that the white shapes kind of washed out on the yellow background, especially at smaller sizes and when juxtapositioned next to the dark purple shape.

Mar 31, 2016 18:27
@MatthewRead The design team talked about the favicons a lot this morning. I'll try to explain where we're at, why we chose the newer favicon, and let you respond. :) cc @Dom @RoryAlsop
Mar 30, 2016 21:07
New favicons are now live. cc @NReilingh @RoryAlsop @ToddWilcox
Mar 30, 2016 20:58
@hichris123 Ha. Nice. Thanks for letting us know.
Mar 30, 2016 20:55
@RoryAlsop Also, I looked into the "site rooms" button. Unfortunately, the way the chat room theme is currently set up, it uses the same button style everywhere. And we don't want to deviate here just for one theme (we've learned this lesson the hard way with site themes). Still, after poking around it appears this button kind of looks meh most of the time, so it's probably worth exploring modifying across the network.
Mar 30, 2016 20:52
@RoryAlsop We use "retina-level" images for devices with a display-ratio at 1.5 and higher.
