Personally I would consider my music knowledge very beginning. I play the acoustic and bass guitar. I started a music minor in college, so I had a few semesters of Aural Skills and Music Theory. Unfortunately Aural Skills kicked my butt and it was killing my GPA, so I had to drop the minor. So I have some understanding of theory and practice — but I wouldn't call myself a musician.
@MatthewRead No problem. That's why I'm here. Some communities engage more than others. While Music might be a smaller community, I've received far more feedback and engagement then the other community I helped design.
Ok. Well — Personally I was never crazy about the OH-WOW-ITS-DEEP-DARK-PURPLE favicon, so if most people like the previous version with a slightly saturated yellow, then that's fine with me and we'll make it status-bydesign
If you went with the 2-color version, there would be no background color at the 32px/16px sizes. So it would be only be purple shapes that look like an M
If you would like this changed to the other 2-color version, I can. Let me know and I'll update it. The reversed favicon is fine, though it does stand out from other community favicons (but that's not necessarily a bad thing).
While the team generally like this direction more than the previous mark, some were still concerned that we were losing something by dropping the white shapes. I didn't really have a strong opinion on it, so I updated it to what you see today.
So I did this version, and that's the version I was going to roll out. Since the mark was all purple/dark black, you could show it without the yellow background, like in the hot questions sidebar.
I can't make it look exactly as he mentioned. 1) That's a copyrighted logomark and copying it would be in violation. 2) It's also very clean and precise, which isn't quite the feeling we were aiming for. Still it's an idea, especially about making the M more purposeful.
Great design!.. however, I have some kind of mixed feeling for the favicon (which I believe is from this suggestion); it's kind of hard to guess what's that exactly for non-regulars. Perhaps "3 white piano keys with 2 short piano black keys" would be better to convey about music, and it also looks like a letter "m" (perhaps like this?) — Andrew T.5 hours ago
So this is what we started with. Some mentioned that the white shapes kind of washed out on the yellow background, especially at smaller sizes and when juxtapositioned next to the dark purple shape.
@MatthewRead The design team talked about the favicons a lot this morning. I'll try to explain where we're at, why we chose the newer favicon, and let you respond. :) cc @Dom @RoryAlsop
@RoryAlsop Also, I looked into the "site rooms" button. Unfortunately, the way the chat room theme is currently set up, it uses the same button style everywhere. And we don't want to deviate here just for one theme (we've learned this lesson the hard way with site themes). Still, after poking around it appears this button kind of looks meh most of the time, so it's probably worth exploring modifying across the network.
