Ah I forget about the right-to-left text. Then you could just write the text backwards.
Reading on of the questions on String Theory and an answer begins "Some of the leaders in the field are Brian Greene and Michio Kaku."
Your theory is SCREWED if Kaku is one of the thought leaders.

@DavidZaslavsky Sorry about the confusion. I'm not sure exactly how different this and this are. I know what an S-matrix is and how it can be used in scattering, but I don't have much experience with them. I would like to learn what S-matrix theory is about. I gather it is related to QFT. Hope it's clearer now.

2:34 AM
OK, I see.
Yes, the S-matrix is related to QFT, or at least that's how we think of it these days, as a particular quantum operator which you can calculate in terms of fields. But you can also think of it as the operator that "connects" the initial and final states of a scattering process, and in that way you can describe it without invoking quantum fields.
Before it became clear that QFT was going to be successful in the long run, some physicists tried to calculate useful results from abstract properties of the S-matrix (chiefly that it has to be unitary to conserve probability).
That's S-matrix theory.
As the Wikipedia article explains, it produced a few useful results but nothing beyond that.

ummm.... I just got 4 upvotes within 30 seconds of posting this answer

user54412
I hope that was just a bunch of people happened to be looking at the page and not some sort of script...

or maybe we now have stackoverflow levels of popularity??? :P

4:23 AM
@ManishEarth referencing ^ that, is there anything mods do in general with suspicious votes?

Depends. Usually it gets reversed. 4 votes on one post isnt much
But we can look into it
Im on mobile right now, though, so no shiny mod toys for me. Ill have a look in half an hour or so

5:08 AM
@ChrisWhite nothing suspicious from the tools I have
I guess that there just were 4 people looking at the page

@ManishEarth @ChrisWhite: I guess lot of users have lot of respect towards Chris... (Manish too <-- I've seen his posts getting votes) ;-)

@Gugg @ChrisWhite Regarding the discussion we did few days back on gravitational and inertial mass , someone said , I think David or Gugg , that they are equal because of equivalence principle but equivalence principle is itself an experimental law . Isn't it , thus restoring that gravitational mass and inertial mass are different .

@ChrisWhite strange, I posted an answer, got +2 in a second, and got +1 10 seconds after that. shrugs
@nonagon I suggest you work a bit on improving your written English; your two recent questions were really hard to decipher :S

10:32 AM
@ManishEarth Sorry , I'll try and be more clear from next time .

good :)
btw, regarding your speed of light in medium q, where did you get that Einstein got that $c$ is constant from causality preservation?

Casuality preservation ?
I think I read it at a couple of places , I think . One book and youtube too said this I think or may be my perception is wrong .

@ManishEarth: I can guess something on "why" you've asked that MSO question..!
Mr. Black Magic has disappeared for a while... Isn't it???

1:17 PM
@ManishEarth On arXiv it is quite clear how one should cite a paper. However, on Wikipedia it is not made quite that easy for pictures. For example the picture in this question: physics.stackexchange.com/q/64436/17609. "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)." Where is "the manner specified" to be found? Or is it sufficient to simply hyperlink to the Wikipedia page?

1:33 PM
I mean where to be found on Wikipedia, not in the question.
@007 When's the next Bond movie scheduled?

1:45 PM
007 is getting all the bond girls too :)

I was in McDonalds the other day, they have a self order system where you get a ticket with a number on it.

The number i got was 007, they didnt appreciate my humming of the theme tune when i picked up my food

@Gugg In a few years.....
:)

@RhysW I'm imagining Sean Connery in your shoes, getting 007 for a number and picking up his burger at McD's.
@007 That's... a long wait.

007
@Gugg The makers want it to be perfect... Also on past records , the movies take this long at-least.

@Gugg it would certainly be an interesting twist, though im sure he would ask for his milkshake to be 'shaken, not stirred'

@007 I think so, but in the past I didn't see all Bonds yet. Now, I want them to keep up with my personal demand.
@RhysW That has changed since Casino Royale: "Do I look like I give a damn?"

2:34 PM
@Gugg ah really? i could have sworn it came back in the new one

@RhysW Then you're probably right. :)

@ManishEarth Will these be reversed?

Wait 24 hours.
If they don't get reversed, ping me

@ManishEarth im curious, do you say manish as Ma Nish or Man Ish, different inflections on parts of the name?

Muh-neesh

@ManishEarth well....i was sort of close? ok not even a little, thanks :P

3:19 PM
If you pronounced the "a" like cat, then no :P
IAST is weird

@ManishEarth ah i was doing that in both,

yep
Most Indic languages don't have a cat sound. Well, some do (like my language), but it's a rare sound and I haven't seen any words that use it, let alone names. There's just a letter (combining diacritic to be exact) for a in cat.
@RhysW Let's see if I can get your name: Is it like "rye" with an h in it?
Or "Rhee"?

007
At last found one!this: "" , google gives no results for it.

Use symbolhound
Google doesn't do symbols

3:34 PM
@ManishEarth this one, its basically pronounces Reese but with a shorter e shound

ah
no h? Or a slight h?

Rese is probably the way of doing it, h is there but silent
waiting in the shadows, stalking like a ninja

We should all just spell names in IPA and be done with it
Then again, IPA has its own flaws

IPA?

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)"The acronym 'IPA' strictly refers [...] to the 'International Phonetic Association'. But it is now such a common practice to use the acronym also to refer to the alphabet itself (from the phrase 'International Phonetic Alphabet') that resistance seems pedantic. Context usually serves to disambiguate the two usages." (Laver 1994:561) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of oral language. The IPA...

ahh

^^useful site for such things

oh hey manish, you must get a lot of profile views, being a mod in two places and all

@RhysW no clue if I do

@ManishEarth well, 2k just on physics is lots of views :P

I don't even know what constitutes "a lot"
Ah I see
:P

3:47 PM
have you ever thought of , oh i dont know, sticking a link to Space Exploration on A51 in your profile?, given that if even 5% of your views on just physics joined then the site would be beta :P

@RhysW hm. I don't mind :)

@ManishEarth hehe, the advantage of being a mod i suppose :P easy to influence people towards places thanks to lots of views

I find it interesting. Not a place where I'd write posts, but definitely a place where I'd vote
@RhysW I think those views are more due to my activity last year and less due to being a mod, but whatever :)

@ManishEarth oh of course, not to detract from your answering ability of course!
my choice of phrasing isnt always the best

Actually, I've been thinking of adding an "interesting A51 proposals" line to my profile anyway
@RhysW Oh, I knew what you meant :P

3:50 PM
more and more people seem to be doing it lately, atleast, from what ive seen

4:06 PM
@ManishEarth: I think you know that we had put some walls around when we were bulk-retagging questions.. ???
like 5 per day per user..!

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ walls?
O_0
oh yeah

Is there anything preventing from being excess..?

No
I'd just tell you not to
Nothing bannable

So, we can edit..!

Sure

4:07 PM
@ManishEarth It's not for me..!

@ManishEarth aha, i like this, "No, bad user, cut that out" * slaps wrist*

Have a look at Movies & TV active page --> you'd freak out..! :O

Thing is, trivial edits like these flood the main page. If you're making substantial edits to questions without answers, go ahead
@RhysW yep lol

I know that..
Flooding can make the site *look* nasty.. Isn't it?
Two guys garbaging the whole site with their retags..!
The thing is - one guy's edit keeps on getting approvals..!

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ holy cow! i only just noticed it was all the same guy

4:13 PM
@RhysW Keep scrolling down and you can see a mod ;-)

wow, thats crazy, whats going on 0.o

for pagesize=50 :D
@RhysW Called me..??? :P

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ well, yeah i guess so :P

@ManishEarth you should've ticked suspend :P

@ManishEarth advise them that they cannot begin to comprehend the gravity of the situation

@ManishEarth ahahah, how does that pop up? i mean does it make a private chat room, or email me or what?

@RhysW You get an email, linking you to http://physics.stackexchange.com/users/message/<some message id>. All mods are notified of the message.
At which point you can reply to it.
If you wish
However, non-mods can only reply once unless a mod replies. Sort of a "speak only when spoken to" thing (prevents users from saying "REMOVE MY SUSPENSION" 10 times and flooding mod inboxes)

@ManishEarth pff, who are physics to complain about anything
That's what I call respect ;-)

@ManishEarth ahhh, so if you had accidentally pressed send on that one youd be in trouble for misuse :P

@RhysW How can he make an accident -- He has been declared a bot several months ago..!
Speed typing, inter-changing sites, not at all at silence for a while.., etc...
Since he hasn't posted any spam yet, SE keeps him..! :P

4:24 PM
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ :O i knew it! though thats pretty awesome if he is, because he is easily swayed apparently :P maybe i can repurpose him for my world domination schemes

Okay.. Let's stop praising a bot ..! :P

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ haha, yeah the other day i was bouncing between three sites to post questions and ask stuff in chat, and he was there and active in all of them

@RhysW well, it asks for a confirmation, but ... yeah

@ManishEarth and then in your anger at making a mistake you accidentally confirmed that too i mean :P

@RhysW ?
@RhysW I use the favorite rooms feature in chat, so new updates turn up on the sidebar

4:26 PM
@ManishEarth well, if you sent the message, then got angry at yourself for mistakenly sending it and pressed confirm on the message that popped up youd be in trouble i take it :P

@RhysW oic lol

@ManishEarth my ramblings arent always easy to follow :P

@ManishEarth What's this OIC thing <-- you're using recently..?
(so that I can plagiarize it when I chat with my friends :P)

@RhysW meh, I'm currently doing a few other things at once so I don't have time to switch on the comprehension section of my brain :P
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ spell it

@ManishEarth not enough time for the comprehension chip to engage you mean :P

4:29 PM
yep
Currently got two SSH sessions open (occasionally messing around there and pushing code), and reading about graphene and trying to get a band program software to work.

@ManishEarth graphene is always fun to read about

Yep. I'll be working on the band structure of graphene and a few other similar compounds this summer.

Okay.. C'yall later ;-)

5:15 PM
@ManishEarth oh nice! that sounds pretty cool actually

6:43 PM
Hello folks

Hey @Herber

7:06 PM
s quiet here

@RhysW sometimes it picks up. It does tend to be quiet though.

Well we cant have that! If i knew something physicsy i would start talk on that but my go to topic tends to annoy people :P

What's your go-to topic?

the current plans of mars-one to colonize mars

@RhysW certainly there are lots of on-topic physics questions that could be asked related to that.

7:11 PM
oh believe me i know, i just know most of the answers :P related to the mission that is
but people dont tend to get me started on this topic, because i dont shut up about it :P
apparently its abnormal to be excited about the colonization of another planet...silly people

I wonder how realistic it is to send that much mass to Mars given current technology costs.
4 humans plus all of the various support material they need weighs a lot.

thats why they are only sending it there, rather than there and back!
6 billion per mission
estimated
bill gates alone could fund 4 and a half missions :L

It seems to me the riskiest part of the plan is the unpredictability of people.

my mistake, 10 and a bit times
@BrandonEnright yeah, thats why they want to do the 8-10 years training first

Am I the only one that's very OCD about improper spaces around commas and periods? For example "word ,otherword" and "word , otherword" drive me crazy!
Odd spacing around commas and periods is very common on this site. I'd love to know why.

7:44 PM
@BrandonEnright please dont do that

@Qmechanic What is a nice gentle accessible shorter than a fat book introduction to conformal field theory? Just reading chapter 5 of David McMohan's book still leaves me with a very shake feeling about the Wick expansion applied for example to calculate correlators, the OPE, primary and secondary operators, and all that. I need to dig a bit deeper, to for example understand papers about 2D conformal turbulence.
Damn, how I curse these stupid policies that prevent me from asking about this on the main page, where all the knowledgable people potentially could help me with this hang around!!! This is so unfair, I really want to get hold of something to better understand these things :-(
Hi @Qmechanic, could you give me a nice hint? I have seen a question about these issues answered by Lumo, but he has not pointed to a nice further reading. The OP of that question does not understand these issues from D. Tong's Lecture notes, so I guess they are not an appropriate starting point for me either...

10:12 PM
@Dilaton Besides Polchinski's book, I'm sure there must be many lecture notes around. E.g. depending on your level, you might try, say, the first half of Paul Ginsparg, Applied Conformal Field Theory, arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9108028

10:26 PM
Thanks @Qmechanic, I will have a closer look at it :-). From afar this looks like it covers what I need, and if it countains too gross stumbling blocks I dont understand I will only see upon giving it a try ...

10:39 PM
@Dilaton I thought the *'s were for the (semi-)hilarious messages, or at least for those of general interest. :)

11:01 PM
@Gugg yes, Qmechanic's comment pointing to the document is of general interest for people who want to get started learning more about CFT :-). An additional advantage of the star or upvote is, that if people are very chatty this night, I can easier find it again to print it out at work tommorow ...
I have to sleep now, cheers

@Dilaton see ya
