Q: Emulate a keyboard via USB to USB

cat pantsI know this is twisted, but hear me out. I am trying to use a Raspberry Pi as a KVM over IP via xvnc. Video output is easy, just using a video capture card, but I need to be able to connect a male to male USB from my Raspberry Pi and have it send signals to the machine being KVMd. I suppose I c...

Hey, what's the difference between dragging a .iso or a .img onto a hard drive, and writing it to the hard drive using DD?
03:42
That was another issue ;p
Someone's forgot their tinfoil hats.
I wonder what's going on their mind when they post shit like this
or if they're really this fucked IRL
also,
apparently on April 2nd I lost my 1000+ consec visit streak
flips tables
I find it hard to believe
:/
especially considering Stack Overflow, Meta Stack Overflow & Web Applications records my visit
on April 2nd
03:50
Oh, so you must've checked in here, but haven't clicked around enough or something
there's no freaking way I'd visit & participate in the above 3 without being on Super User
ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
there's no way to get it back, is there
Haven't even been here for 1000 days non-consecutive, so… you're old :P
lol
wonder if I should post a meta question
Y U NO consecutive days and such?
sounds legit

Anyway, It's friggin 5:55 AM, and I need to make myself some coffee. Laters :P
@slhck laters!
I just read about deniable encryption and the rubberhose file system - I think stuff like that is so cool =p
apparently "Rubber-hose cryptanalysis" is actually torture, meh
lol =p
04:05
@Sathya got a link to that? I'm wondering what distro that is ;p
@JShoe @JShoe: one moves the ISO, the other will copy all the bits in the image into the drive, which may or may not work.

@Sathya last time that happened to me, somehow I got my consecs back a few days later
but it's been 3 weeks for you :\
@OliverSalzburg, your reply userscript is awesome

user219046I was searching through the internet trying to solve this problem and saw an answer in this site and it looked you really now about this subject. A: Is there a free way to compress a PDF?

John TThere is also Free PDF Compressor. It gives you the option of using the Flate or RunLength compression algorithms as well as different compression levels.

Tempted to delete the answer outright

or just comment as such
;p
That would be way to moderate
Also darn @Bob why doesn't this answer deal with multipage documents :(

A: Batch resize and compress PDF files

BobI'm suggesting a command line tool here, which can be easily batched with loops in built-in scripting languages in Windows, Linux, OS X, etc. ImageMagick supports PDFs and has a resize option with its convert tool. It was a good year ago, though, so I've forgotten most of it :P
I tried the convert thing on the command line and it reduced my pdf to one page :\

ElGabbuI am having some trouble with ImageMagick. @IvoFlipse He's doing pdf => jpg, not pdf => pdf?

How about that delegates.xml answer?
I think multipage worked with PDFs saved from MS Word, and from the Adobe PDF printer, but I haven't tested any other source.
It won't let me edit the file, it complains something else has opened imagemagick, argh
Bob
Bob
How could you not have Unlocker installed? :P
All the sources I can find with a quick search say multipage pdf to multipage pdf is supported and should work. So it may just be that bug described in the SO answer.

@JourneymanGeek well there's the last.fm app open.spotify.com/app/lastfm but I used this one soundmatch.me

and what do you use for adblocking?
blockify, works well
It only mutes the ads, there is no way to stop them unless you pay ;p

I don't want to think about virtualisation on top of that.
why do you need linux on windows?

Ah.. development.
Specifically, we need to compile and test crap on both Windows and Linux.

Perhaps Cygwin will work. Who knows?
I'm not sure if we actually need Linux, or just POSIX.

Q: How to install a UserScript in Internet Explorer 9?

Nathan OsmanIs there any way to install a UserScript or GreaseMonkey script in IE9? I know that Trixie used to be able to provide this capability but it doesn't seem to work in IE9 at all.

11:49
just to note. Android's Screenshot tool is a wierd mix of Awesome and Annoying.
Bob
Bob
aww, Trixie is gone?
@JourneymanGeek the home + power one?
It works all the time, but has the most bass-arkward key combo
I don't have any Windows 8 handy to play with :\
@Bob: power + volume down
if you do it wrong...
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek uh.. well, it's home + power on the S2 :P
11:50
@JourneymanGeek With some ROMs you can put a screenshot option in the power menu
Bob
Bob
actually, it worked better on Gingerbread
on that, you could hold home and tap power
on ICS, I have to press both at the same time, hold
and hope it works

Q: How to take a screenshot with an Android device?

Louis RhysIs there a way to take a screenshot of an Android device and save it as an image file?

Bob
Bob
What's that?
VXconnectbot screenshot, with a volume control overlay photobombing it? ;p
using the hacker's keyboard, of course. Need to give the samsung one a shot, since it has swipe built in
Bob
Bob
11:52
@OliverSalzburg nope to the accepted answer, the S2 doesn't work with home + volume
only home + power :P
ooh
looks like you CAN run nested VMs
@Bob Just because the accepted answer doesn't cover all possibilities doesn't make it wrong ;D There are several other answers with every imaginable key combo
I even had an app that let you take a screenshot by shaking the phone...
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Yes, but a great answer should acknowledge that there may be other phone-specific options :P
@JourneymanGeek :D
I always wondered what that option was for.
Ah, yea, it mentions the 32-bit guests too.
Looks like 32-bit can be fully virtualised in software, but no one ever bothered for 64-bit.
cool
I can even play around with Hyper-V under VMware
considering the bloody thing won't install natively
@JourneymanGeek What is that? SSH client?
I just use a generic terminal emulator :P
@Bob: ssh client
someone suggested it, badly, in an answer, so I decided to add a decent screenshot
@OliverSalzburg My Note 2 lets you palmswipe for a photo - feels kind natural. Also double tap with the stylus. And the standard method.

Q: How to ping an IP from an android device?

HPMIs there any way to ping an IP address from an android device (like an Arc S or LG PRADA)? Is there any android built in application or am I to download an app for my task?

er
@Paul What's a palmswipe?
actually, come to think of it, that might belong on android.se if it isn't a dupe
@OliverSalzburg Literally - swipe your palm across the screen
Oh, okay :D
I have decided the best "natural" feature of touchwiz is when you are looking at a contact page or a message from them, if you put your phone to your ear it will call them
12:08
lol
only touchwiz-zed system I have is my wifi only tablet
I should get my brother to try that, he has an S3
Bob
Bob
the S2 actually has a diagnostics menu with a ping button :P
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I am not sure if the s3 has it - it may have come in with the Note 2
Bob
Bob
@Paul ..never seen that
But they are all being backported eventually
(so Samsung say)
@Paul Interesting
12:11
I don't use any of the other touchwiz features that they bang on about - like the keeping the screen on while your eyes are open and watching the orientation of your eyes to keep the screen orientation right even if you lie down
Both of these rely on the camera, and both of these are things I would most often need when it is dark. So the camera doesn't work.
The Samsung version of Android is an abomination. I don't care what cool features they put into it, I could never use it
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Come on, it's not that bad... is it?
:P
"Where is the calendar?" "There, it's named S Planner"
Bob
Bob
I actually kinda miss TouchWiz at times
(using Nova for my homescreen right now)
@OliverSalzburg Yep, Nova is the first thing I install.
Bob
Bob
12:15
@OliverSalzburg o.O which phone?
Bob
Bob
Mine came with an app called Calendar (S2)
everything on this is named subtly differently from the 'standard' one
it's a Chinese ROM in English mode :\
@Bob Yeah they renamed it with S3 I think. But it doesn't really matter what it is called, you generally get to it by a shortcut or widget I reckon. But man it is bug ugly.
S Planner and S Note are two of their replacements
And S Planner is so horrible O_O
Sweet, there's a new CM snapshot for my SGS1
@OliverSalzburg Aside from looking a bit crap, I think the usability is lacking too
12:19
@Paul Samsung disagrees ;P
@OliverSalzburg But Samsung make the only decent phones where I can swap battery and have microsd, so I can put up with these things
@OliverSalzburg Perhaps I haven't studied it well enough!
@Paul I have two Samsung phones as well, can't complain about the hardware. I just don't particularly like their version of Android
@OliverSalzburg Yeah my S2 went through some firmware hoops till I landed happily on AOKP - there was nothing to be gained from touchwiz on that phone from what I could tell (except flip for silent, which I had to get an app for until they put it in AOKP)
With the Note 2 I don't mind so much because I have Nova hiding some of the crappiness, and get to use the stylus, which I like.
Anyone here got Action Launcher?
Bob
Bob
@Paul But they're stupid. They put the bloody MicroSD behind the battery.
I much prefer Nokia's way: SIM behind battery, SD hot-swappable.

cool, Windows doesn't care if you expand RAM
well, in a VM anyway
(without restarting)
I'm an idiot.
(cue @jokerdino)
Why am I running two VMs and my host OS on the same drive?
I only have four drives here.. :S
hmm, has anyone here installed a os onto a virtual hdd and then dd it onto the HDD ?
12:54
@HackToHell Yeah, but without the dd
how did you put the image on the hdd then ?
I just gave the vm the partitions directly
Why didn't I think of that facepalms
Will install gentoo tomorrow then ! :D
@HackToHell It is a cool way to do a rebuild without downtime - prep everything in the vm then boot it
Aaah, the initial gentoo compile cycle, my favorite
yeah, though the hardware will be different and i am not sure how linux kernel\ will respond to that
12:58
If you use a genkernel kernel, then it autodetects everything, so you should be able to use it inside and out of a vm. Once you boot up the gentoo box for real, you can strip all the stuff you don't want out of the kernel
It will prolly take me all of tomorrow ! Excited :D ! First i need to free some space :/
The nic will change mac and so change to eth1, and you have to take care with fstab as always as the devices change from xvda to sda
Is it a server or desktop build?
It's going to be an desktop build
KDE took a couple of days last time I did it
Couple of days to cccompile ?
13:02
Yeah - fairly old laptop though
If you aren't using LVM, it is worth figuring it out
hmm, if it takes too long to compile I'll install Arch linux ;p
hi. I have RHEL in a VM. I am configuring bind and httpd on it. The nameservers are pointing to its own ip address. Here is the config ( pastebin.com/ZcZRf9Mw ) This is a copy of my named.conf file ( pastebin.com/FdLS0iGx ) When I try to ping my domain , I am getting the error "unknown host:example.com" I don't know where I am going wrong.
13:18
@hacktohell: I think a cli install of gentoo took me half a day on a c2d
Also autocomplete wtf halfdinosaur

@Sathya not bad :P
hey, it's crashing less than maybe a year ago
I actually haven't had a KDE crash since early last year

paypal went batshit insane over the past 2 days. Made my account to limited, cancelled all my recurring payments, asked for photo id, insisted on me changing my password & password hint questiosn
@Sathya it asked me for address proof
does Fedora live iso have gparted ?
after changing password, password hint, updating photo id, it asked me to upload photo id, address proof, change my password & password hint questions again, verify my mobile number, bank account etc
at that point I went flipping some tables & basically said FU
and today it restored to full access :/
@Sathya why did it do all that?
unusual activity on your account or sth?
13:51
@allquixotic they claim so
> What's going on? We're concerned that someone is using your PayPal account without your knowledge. Recent activity from your account seems to have occurred from a suspicious location or under circumstances that may be different than usua
there's been no "recent" activity on paypal, though.
weird...
@Bob I've done it, but it's pretty stupid, and not incredibly fast. Recent VMware can actually pass on the nested page tables and VT-x instructions to the guest, enabling hardware-accelerated nested guests, but the deeper your nesting, the higher the performance cost; and it becomes unworkably slow pretty quickly
@allquixotic yeah
in other news, I finally found out why my Windows 8 would refuse to shutdown/restart on its own
it would get to the part where it turns off the screen, probably turns off the CPU and has "finished" shutting down (all filesystem changes synced to disk), and the screen would go into standby, but it wouldn't reboot / power down
ffff this issue is back and it's driving me nuts .... going to wipe this install of linux asap
I flashed new firmware onto my Radeon HD7970, new firmware from AMD themselves, and it works!!!
that's the first time I've ever flashed firmware into a video card and I have to admit it was pretty damn scary because I had no guarantee that it would be compatible with my card, but after doing a lot of research I got some indication that I am using a "reference" Radeon HD7970 (the ASIC is not modified and the board doesn't have a custom cooler)
13:57
@allquixotic yay
the neat thing is that the new firmware came in an installer package shipped by AMD, but it's not posted anywhere on their website o_O I have no idea how "they" found it (it was posted on a forum)
@HackToHell As the answerer said, it seemed you like can access imgur. I don't understand the problem
neither do i, i spent way too much time on it
Reinstalled and purged everything related to networking and the problem persists
apparently what it did is it flashed the "Radeon HD7970 GHz Edition" firmware onto my stock Radeon HD7970, which not only updated the clock rates to the GHz Edition rates (like a free upgrade of my hardware to the GHz Edition!!!), but also, updated the DSDT/power management stuff
And that's one of the reasons why I am wiping ubuntu
