@nhinkle - what happened to your rep?!
you lost your rep again, the the recalc?

2 hours later…
02:38
anyone know how to disable the RAID controller in a Dell PowerEdge?
Nope, sorry @studiohack.
@Wil told me how, but he didn't clarify enough, since he had to go...if you don't mind, could you tell me again, @Wil? I've been all over my BIOS and I can't disable the RAID controller...
my BIOS looks like this:
Wil
Wil
@studiohack Was just about to go to bed - sorry, the last few days I have been so busy
Wil
Wil
ill try to help quick!
02:43
@Wil I thought you were in bed already, don't let me keep you!
Wil
Wil
its alright, getting fed up with this work... need a break
possibly look under integrated devices...
nothing says RAID under there
Wil
Wil
basically put, if you have a dedicated RAID card, you need to unplug that and put the drives straight in to the motherboard.
have SCSI controller, Diskette, controller, IDE controller, etc
so is that why I'm not getting any results when I google about this?
Wil
Wil
If there isn't a RAID card and they are straight in, then (usually) the storage chip has a few modes, standard/IDE, Enhanced / AHCI, or RAID.
this is just typical, it varies between board/bios/manufacturer etc.
02:46
the only place in the entire BIOS that it talks about a RAID is under the PCI IRQ Assignment, slot one is LSI Inc RAID adapter
Wil
Wil
so, under IDE controller, look at the options
there are no options for the IDE controller
only can turn it between Auto and off
Wil
Wil
I am not sure what to say then as that is where I would expect to do it - usually in the hard drive config screen or in integrated devices / motherboard features or similar (again, varies between everything)
I'm in the BIOS, and not the RAID configuration thing
Wil
Wil
however, LSI are good RAID chips, it is possible I suppose that Dell put this on and force you to use the LSI raid/no option to disable
02:48
so simply put, I have an error with my hardware RAID drivers, so freenas cannot see the drive
and I have such a good server that I can't fix it? :P
Wil
Wil
@studiohack I understand ... e.g. on my intel board, I can go in to BIOS and choose modes - IDE/AHCI/Raid.... IDE is bog standard, AHCI enables some advanced features such as NCQ... both of these require no additional drivers or support... then I can choose RAID which some OS's need a dedicated driver for and it gives me an administration interface.
that's the problem, I'm on an Intel Xeon machine...if you want, I can give you the page on Dell Support with the Service tag...perhaps I should try something else, like Windows Server
Wil
Wil
@studiohack Quite possibly. It may be worth a look in the RAID setup utility to see if you can disable/pass through as IDE/AHCI, but as I tried to explain (badly as I was in a rush), the point of a dedicated raid device is simply to make it as painless to the OS as possible, so even if it was disabled, it may still require a LSI driver
I've cleared the RAID configuration several times, but it says then that no drives are found handled by the controller and none by the BIOS...the BIOS can't see the drives because RAID has all the control...
Wil
Wil
e.g. Software RAID 1 - both hard drives visible to OS, failure notifies the OS and it does its thing...

Hardware RAID 1 - Everything is done in the RAID chip and as far as the OS is concerned it just has one regular hard drive... if the RAID fails or anything, you can usually hot swap and the OS won't know a thing about it.
02:53
I have a hardware RAID, have tried RAID 5 and 0...
Wil
Wil
ehh... hate to say it, but, have you double checked the hard drives work and are connected? one should see it, I do not understand why neither can and it sounds like an error - I would suggest trying to just go to factory settings with something like Windows or whatever it came with just to test it works as expected
no problem...I know they work, because for a while I had a RAID5 array, with Fedora 12 and a home server (amahi), and I could see 67GB of the 100GB (it is three 30 GB HDDs), and I filled up most of that, past 30GB, so I know they work
Wil
Wil
but, at that time, did it show up correctly in the raid setup?
yes, I had three HDDs online and ready to go for RAID configuration
Wil
Wil
(and by the way, I am not talking about Freenas raid setup, I mean the actual hardware RAID setup page straight after the BIOS)
02:56
yes, I have played with that page, cleared and set up new RAID configurations, etc
I have just lost respect for some of humanity. Adolf Hitler is trending on Twitter. Because it's his birthday. What sick-minded people think that it's a thing to mention/remember?
Wil
Wil
I'm sorry, need to go to bed in a second, 4AM and im dropping off! I am not really what else I can suggest... if it is in warranty, you may want to ring Dell, or go to a local shop/Ebay and get a RAID card... you can get bog standard cheap ones that work well with FreeNAS for next to nothing
@Wil I think what I'll do is install Windows Server 2003 on a RAID5 (done it before but got rid of it because all my machines are Home (ugh)) and set up a file/print server
thank you so much for the help @Wil, I appreciate it! :)
sleep well!
Wil
Wil
well... don't do it straight away, I wouldn't give up on Freenas, if you can disable the RAID, it should work... I would advise ringing up Dell and just asking or sending an email to tech support... I haven't used Dells servers for a while and can't really comment
thanks @Wil - will keep that in mind :) good night!

2 hours later…
04:37
@studiohack I don't know! In the mod history it said an automatic rep recalc occurred, though I don't know why, since I've hardly been getting any upvotes the past few days
I'm a bit irked, but oh well. Now that I'm a mod at least it doesn't affect my ability to get stuff done, but it's still irritating.
Guess I'll have to answer some more questions :/
blah, there's a question i KNOW i answered before, but i can't seem to find it yet
i hate it when that happens with dupes
though if you can't find it, that's a good sign that for some reason it's not showing up well in search, and might be an indication that you should try editing it so the keywords one might use to search for it are more likely to turn it up

1 hour later…
05:52
@nhinkle seems an auto recalc was applied to me as well
@Sathya was it system-wide?
They usually announce them
no idea.. checking for some other users..
Also it's weird that it took off so much. Last time I audited myself (without doing an actual recalc) was when I was over 10k and it didn't take anything off. Now I'm down about 400
yes, it was site-wide.
@Sathya must not've been site-wide... @studiohack didn't get one
wait i lied
he did
05:56
hmm @JourneymanGeek didn't get either, by @TomWij did
recalc for all users who nominated for elections?
i looked at ignacio's, he got one
scratch that theory, @Wil had one :|
I think it's worth a meta post
Matt Jenkins got one too
random 1 rep user didn't
brb in 10, don't go away
i might go away - i have some things to do. i'll be back in a while if I do leave though
I asked in the mod room, btw @Sathya
hm. no recalc at all on gareth, with 2000 rep and recent activity
this is bizarre
i have to go. i'll be back later though. sorry for the bad timing :/
06:05
hmm, the thing is @nhinkle, my rep didn't change much, and I recalced your rep when you reached 10K, so what happened?
perhaps a script ran and deleted a bunch of stuff?
06:42

morning all
morning @DMA57361
07:26
@studiohack I don't know. It's bizarre.
like really bizarre @nhinkle
@Sathya any further info?
I'm back now :)
maybe ask on MSO later
maybe there was a clean-up run on old questions and a recalc on anyone affected?
Yeah. It's a bit weird for 500 rep to just disappear
@DMA57361 I looked in the recently deleted questions and didn't see any large amounts
07:28
explain why I didn't lose any rep, but @nhinkle did, even though his rep is recalced very recently?
f/e, but I wonder if auto-job delete appear there or not
ah, that solves it then
Apparently I'm owed 2 rep according to /reputation, downvotes must have been working somewhere
07:47
@nhinkle nopes..

Q: Reputation from bounties not counted on community wiki posts in most recent rep recalc

nhinkleAccording to Sam Saffron, a recent fix by Nick to how votes are counted on Community Wiki posts was deployed, and many users had their reputation automatically recalculated to account for these changes. This recalc resulted in a massive loss of rep for a few users, but not for most. From my resea...

@Sathya check the mod room for full details
@nhinkle hm, nice investigation there
howdy @MattJenkins
Morning @MattJenkins
08:02
@MattJenkins you're almost at 10k... in about 2 months
that's unbelievable.
heh
23 points away... so neat, and yet so far...
I r l33t hax0r
@MattJenkins is the @JonSkeet of Super User
oh man...
Do I take that as a compliment? [you could take that as a compliment, @MattJenkins, I'm just shocked, that's all :P -studiohack]
Congrats to @MattJenkins for hitting 10k in 55 days :)

08:06
Congrats, you've gained the privilege – access to moderator tools learn more
let's have a party ;P
yay for party :p
partayyy
CONGRATS!
heh. the things we pin are amusing :)
That's only 1000 short of if you had gotten the max rep possible every day since you joined.
08:12
Well, I did have a few off days... when I had to go to the airport, etc

Q: What can we do about the influx of "Help! I can't ask questions!"?

studiohackRecently, Meta Stack Overflow and the other Stack Exchange meta sites have started to receive a huge influx of Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account on Site XYZ, and we keep closing them as duplicates, but they keep coming. We close all dupes as the exact duplicate of: ...

@nhinkle what do you mean by your comment? confused?
@studiohack I mean that when a user is told that their account is no longer able to ask questions, it should direct them to the meta post
make that an answer @nhinkle :P
and I'll upvote
doing
you can delete your comment @nhinkle, since your answer has the text. +1ed!
08:20
i was getting there, give me a moment ;)
i'm looking forward to th distant day when I get enough rep on meta to see vote splits
I get the feeling that OSX Jedi is doing an assignment on CPUs at the moment. - 3 questions in quick succession about the internals of CPUs...
about the only privilege I don't have and wish I did on meta.so
I surely wish I was a mod on MSO
@studiohack being a mod on MSO would be handy, but not having vote splits is just a pain
I know...I wish I didn't have to "suggest" edits, just a plain pain
08:21
just emailed rebecca about a shirt. hopefully i'll get one soon!
@studiohack you have enough rep to edit on MSO don't you?
yes, you do. i just looked.
@nhinkle, yes I do...not for other sites. working on getting up to vote to close
@nhinkle yay! I'm wearing mine right now :P
i wore my stack exchange shirt the other day. it was great
i'm hoping for a black SU shirt. then i'll have the white SE one and the black SU one
@nhinkle in public? gasp!
which reminds me, i need to make an ad for that
@nhinkle you can choose to get a black one
08:25
@studiohack, Ivo wants me to tell people about that
I have a black one, I like it better than white
ATTENTION EVERYONE: WRITE ENOUGH HIGH-QUALITY POSTS FOR THE BLOG, YOU WIN A FREE SUPER USER T-SHIRT!!!!!!!
@nhinkle tell people about what you just deleted?
See?
I pinned it :P
08:26
it doesn't need to be pinned :P
I WANT A SHIRT! ANOTHER SHIRT!
I'd best get writing then :P
there's too much pinned already. we'll have an official ad out soon
lol, we have too much pinned in here - you can't see the actually starred stuff sometimes :P
@MattJenkins, yes you should!
can we get rid of the pin on that internships thing? it's been there for ages and isn't relevant to many people
08:27
there will be a dogfight for shirts. haha
ahhhhh... real stars!
I think after tomorrow we can unpin ivo's birthday, though it'll still show up for a while with all those stars, which is quite fine :)
blech. j/k
I like having my name up there!
it is! :D
the Portal 2 warning can go tomorrow, should have it finished by then :P
@DMA57361 still haven't gotten it... :/
08:29
@nhinkle did you hear that I have Portal 1?
@studiohack really?? AWESOME!
@nhinkle it's definitely worth while IMO, I'm about 70% thru I think
haven't played it yet though
Have you started playing it yet?
nope @nhinkle
08:30
@DMA57361 I'll be getting a copy soonish
need to work on Steam
Haven't had time yet anyhow. School :/
same here @nhinkle
it's not particularly long
08:31
Portal 1 isn't. I've heard Portal 2's longer though, and a bit more challenging
@nhinkle longer yes, ~double I believe (the SP, and apparently the same again for the co-op)
more challenging? I'm ... not sure tbh ... was a long time ago that I last played P1...
I'm looking forward to getting my 500 rep back soon >.<
@DMA57361 did you see that mess with the bounties not being awarded on CW posts?
yeah
@DMA57361 everyone at our weekly work meeting was talking about how "Portal 2 is SO MUCH HARDER!!", but probably because we've all played Portal 1 so many times before :P
@nhinkle could be, once you've done P1 once it's easier from then on in
my measure would be that, as yet, I've not been stuck in a single location for more than a few attempts - so probably on par with P1
08:34
Fair enough
any tips for Portal 1?
that said, I've not finished yet... maybe it ramps up towards then end...
as in, how to learn it or whatever?
@studiohack the game does an excellent job of training the player
@studiohack you'll figure it out quite intuitively
08:36
@DMA57361 interesting...
yeah, just fire it up, you'll be perfectly fine - the learning curve is very well tuned
you start out in a test chamber where the computer teaches you how to do everything by leading you through a series of increasingly complicated tests. The first one is as easy as "put the box on the button", and everything you need to do know from there on gets taught to you as you go.
09:07
goodnight all
argh portal2 talk... see you in a few weeks then! :-P
lol, not a Portal fan... or avoiding spoilers?
@DMA57361 avoiding spoilers, i'm stuck on an athlon xp 3000+ with fx 5600xt for the next week or two...
ah yes, I remember, gaming machine broke - overclockers.co.uk, yes?
09:16
So a week of SpaceChem (awesome game) minecraft and perhaps some portal 1 for me.
don't worry, we won't be spoiler anything in here
and SpaceChem is very good :D
I added my star to nhinkle's warning.
@studiohack get SpaceChem while you're at it.
@PriceChild spaceChem? ah never mind, got it
@studiohack Well seen as you're getting into portal (i hope?) we might as well overload you with a small number of other good games!
09:19
and no, I probably won't get into P1 much
ah well
got. to. sleep. night. all.
bye
@PriceChild yeah, I'm stuck on the second to last planet in SpaceChem atm :/
@DMA57361 I've been going very slow and steady... probably embarrassingly slowly. Its the kind of thing I should probably dropbox the save file of...
lol, well it is pretty taxing tbh
urgh... you know what's bad when you have a minor headache... a fire drill >(
09:52
Ok, there's another blog post towards my t-shirt ;)
10:44
:)
meh, slow week for me today
er.. slow week i mean. If i had a slow week today i'd be experiencing time very much differentky from all of you
@studiohack: portal is not very long. And just vexing enough to be fun.
is going cold turkey on minecraft for least this week
@JourneymanGeek lol
@DMA57361: nothing to do with my current suckitude at SU, honest. I just haven't seen too many questions i think need answering
meh, my rep-scoring activity on SU has been very poor of late as well, that's just how these things go sometimes
lol
yeah
i'm still working my way to my 10K, slowly but surely
lol
have you seen your cumulative graph? -> stackexchange.com/users/…
10:56
@JourneymanGeek beat ya :P
I hardly think you currently have suckitude on SU :P
@MattJenkins: yeah. you have
@DMA57361: compare last week to this week ;p
@MattJenkins: i'm not a super-star-user. I'm a superuser XD.
@JourneymanGeek compare that to mine then :P
@DMA57361 : I have a year on you
and 1k less rep ;p
10:58
9 months, and it doesn't really matter
march/april was a bit of a statistical anomaly. that and my apparent sheer genious when sick as hell
was it more a case of having the time to be on SU when stuck at home sick?
no
I have a fair amount of time - i had classes every day during that period. I have classes 2 days a week now
hmm
superuser.com/questions/273646/password-file-in-xp/… its in a way a hacking question, but i do think its a legitimate thing to do in some cases..
@JourneymanGeek mmhm, probably best to steer towards resetting rather than recoverying
@PriceChild: which i have, i think
11:09
@JourneymanGeek yup! highfive
honestly, the programme i'd try myself in the same situation is neither, and much dodgier ;p
konboot - its a programme that modifies memory PRE-BOOT, and bypasses the need for a password at all, supposedly
11:32
people flag for the weirdest things
11:50
@Sathya don't leave us hanging?!
@PriceChild not sure I follow?
@Sathya Leaving us hanging, waiting for the juicy details.
What was flagged for what reason etc.
@PriceChild ChrisF's comment was flagged, ( following the link should show the comment)

anyone know of an alternative to PuTTY that supports SCP?
I've used WinSCP for transferring files before, but it doesn't have a console interface so can't really be a replacement for PuTTy
mokubai: most SCP clients i know of on windows are standalone
@DMA57361: maybe cygwin?
@JourneymanGeek might be something in there I guess, but I don't use Cygwin
Wil
Wil
What site is best for twitter application recommendations? e.g. not about twitter.com directly.... It would be [software-rec], but is more Super User or Web Apps or other?
web apps
hmm
unless you mean a desktop client, then SU
Wil
Wil
12:11
Well, I don't mind if the recommendation is Webapp or desktop client
@DMA57361 : hmm, i may have an idea, please standby while i check
it needs to at least have an option to ignore a changing server key
@Wil: ask for a desktop client primarily ;p
then as long as its 'also' webapps...
basically I have a load of devices that I need to scp a file to, but they'll all have the same host name, at least for a short while...
@Mokubai: erf. same host name on more than one system is a PITA
12:13
and PuTTY chokes with the same host name but different key...
Wil
Wil
Ok, if anyone knows, I will write the question in a minute - just want a client that doesn't miss a tweet!
@Mokubai: its a cygwin repackage but its oh so slick
I also need it to be scriptable...
may be that cygwin is the best way to go...
@JourneymanGeek I'll have a look at mobaxterm
PuTTY would work great if only I could get it to ignore the changing key, it's PSCP tool is exactly what I want to script the job, but it chokes on the keys and spews out an error if they're not what it's seen before
I found a module for python that supports SSH, but it only supports sftp (no scp) and it seems our device only supports scp (but no sftp)
/headdesk
12:21
@Mokubai D'oh... irritating
10
Q: How to scp in python?

Michael GundlachWhat's the most pythonic way to scp a file in Python? The only route I'm aware of is os.system('scp "%s" "%s:%s"' % (localfile, remotehost, remotefile) ) which is a hack, and which doesn't work outside linux-like systems, and which needs help from the Pexpect module to avoid password prompts...

putty stores its keys in the registry
so you COULD clear them out, but its more of a pain than it needs to be
@DMA57361 I saw that, and it relies on a command line program which windows doesn't have by default, I'd have to install and use cygwin to do the job I believe
yeah, just spotted :(
lol, you edited in Cygwin while I was typing that as a suggestion :P
12:23
:D
@Mokubai : support.microsoft.com/kb/310516 create a reg file to delete the registry key for your hostname; p
which should be under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY\SshHostKeys
then use pscp as normal
hmmm, will try that...
that's one troubleshooting method i'm glad i'll never need to use
hehe
chuckles someone else suggested konboot for the 'how do i crack my own password' question
12:29
Urgh, PuTTY must have the key before it will do anything
otherwise it kills the connection when used in "quiet" mode
12:46
Has anyone been using IE9?
I looked at it, it seems nice, but I stuck with FF4
@admintech Installed it.... but using Aurora and not really tempted back.
Needed to see if anyone else got an error on a site using IE9
@DMA57361 WinSCP is scriptable, but has the same "not touching an unknown key with a barge pole" problem as PuTTY
@Mokubai f/e, I suggested it before you mentioned scripting, and I've only ever used it fairly briefly
13:00
It looks like a damn fine tool, but it seems SSH developers are militantly against people having to connect to boxen using batch scripts without knowing the key in advance...
well, if you don't know the key it's potentially not secure...
can you collect the keys in advance and make the script "swap" them as necessary?
Not easily, there are any number of "systems" live at a time, and simply restarting them means that they'll all end up spapping hostnames
lovely :/
yeah, great fun :)
Well, there's a bodgit-and-scarper approach in this post: winscp.net/forum/posting.php?mode=quote&p=27302
13:41
hm. yet another pet peeve of mine superuser.com/questions/273646/… i suggested that first ;p
frankly I'm surprised no one voted to close as a dupe
superuser.com/questions/5039/… <- some one beat you by about 21 months ;P
lol
there's that ;p
sorry, but we get that question sooo often
the Q I've pointed to has at ~14 dupes pointing at it now...
lol
maybe it needs to be on the blog ;)

How do you paste Long sections of text here?
Pastebin
Wil
Wil
ahh ok
I have loads of .com names and never had problems, but only about 5 .co.uk and I (was) trying to use one company for them all... was I being silly or what do you think... pastebin.com/5GyJ37q1 ... it was just getting on my nerves, 5 minute for a crappy response.
I think I should of been better, but it was just getting so annoying!
16:22
UK2: Great in most respects - unless you want to actually talk to them!
Wil
Wil
sorry if you read ALL of it, but what do you think? Just seemed rather silly to me...
Not a lot of empathy was there - and the dates don't line up in a sensible way.
@Wil "unknown paste id"
17:38
WHAT?! Portal 1 is nearly 5 GB?
If I had known, never would have let tombull give it to me
apparently yes
don't have time to d/l? slowness? d/l cap?
no, that is rediculous to fill up my HDD with 5GB for a game?!
really?
how small is your harddrive :P
and it's not uncommon for games to be much larger...
17:41
Does anyone know of an alternative to OpenLDAP that wasn't written by complete and utter cheese mongers?
oh nearly 300GB, but games are not that important to me at all @DMA57361
@studiohack so 5GB is hardy "filling it up", and you can uninstall it when done, righT?
I am about at my wit's end with this cr@ppy software
@DMA57361 gonna take 4+ hours to download - and yes, true but still
@MattJenkins erm... no... sounds like you're having "fun" :/
17:42
@DMA57361 I wish...
@studiohack that is sometimes a problem with digital distribution, yeah
header files that typedef structs that don't exist in the header files, instead they exist in the source code to the library and never get installed, and documentation that bares no resemblance to the functions available whatsoever is hardly fun... :(
ouch
most of the functions are depricated and can only be used if you turn on the flag that lets you use the depricated functions. There is no documentation for the replacements. All the documentation says to use the functions that have been depricated, but doesn't mention the fact that they are depricated, or how to enable them.
oh ... wow ... lovely :/
17:50
lol, I have 300+ gb space consumed in games @studiohack
~180Gb here I think
@Sathya o_0 I would die if I had that much in games
why die? I compare it to my wife's DVD collection, which is probably of similar size
@DMA57361 I don't know, it just makes it hard to keep everything backed up and all, and 300GB of games to back up would take forever
@studiohack I don't backup games, just the saves
17:56
why backup software?! just backup the data...
hmph, still. 300GB is all the space I have on my primary machine, and I need that for docs and photos
18:12
Likewise, with Steam I consider the actual games to be expendable as it's only time to download them if something goes wrong, what I want to keep is all my progress in those games... 300GB is about right for all my games...
Wil
Wil
18:51
@Sathya Hmmm, reuploaded - pastebin.com/uepuuMpf (but it is boring)... @linker3000 Yeah, TBH, to have everything under one account, I would pay a little for if it made my life simpler, but it just seemed like they were ripping me off for no rational reason, the dates just did not make sense.
