Question needs some attention: askubuntu.com/questions/267944/… beware the skeezy ads on the links

@AbrahamVanHelpsing this is why I build my own systems ;p
and at least two of my vendors have great tech support ;p

@AbrahamVanHelpsing thank god for ad block plus.

on @JourneymanGeek I can agree with that

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Fixed. Used direct IMG URLs

@ohLordHe'sHere I'm thinking there shouldn't be skeezy ads on a site a youngling might search on his homework problems.

12:12 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing perhaps you should check my edit to the question and hit F5

anyway. moving on, you fixed it.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing all i did was use direct image URLs to the images on those pages
(unfortunately that doesn't use imgur, but removes the link issues)
NEXT PROBLEM!
Why is php5 so damn evil.

It's made of anti-unicorn. It's like dark matter for readable maintainable code.

@mateo_salta I had a philosophical moment today. I watched a TED talk that changed my outlook a little bit. Doing something that is profitable doesn't make it right, we all knew that. But doing something right doesn't make it profitable either. And I'm stuck on finding a happy medium. youtube.com/watch?v=IRVdiHu1VCc is the talk if you want to experience that feel I'm talking about.
The dog knew I was having a moment and expressed how right he thought I was.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Dogs are nice like that.

On a totally unrelated note, youtube changed the refresh bug. It's only a matter of time until I have to logout of gmail to use youtube or register a bogus youtube account.

If I install something with dpkg -i can I remove it with dpkg -r?
I mean, it probably won't be in the software center.

If you still have the deb, yes.

And I don't think apt will work.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing If not?
Man. You're new grav... thought you were a new guy here..

1:48 AM
can you re-download the deb, and that work?

No idea. I only use dpkg -i for temporary testing of packages. And no. It was a "If someone changes their pic to Will Wheaton I swear to god I'm changing to this..." Kind of a head shave bet

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Yeah.. I heard about that.

@Seth good idea, the last one that had white space stayed up a while

I have a flag count bug. Shows 40 for available flags and drops by 5+today's flags when I select spam.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeeks...

1:53 AM
maybe we should have an excessive white space detector

white superspace had me irritated a while ago. it had me thinking it was a rendering bug for a sec

howdy folks. What's new here(besides the spam ;-))?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing do we get less spam flags? I thought I had more...

@maggotbrain Nothing much...

@mateo_salta you're going to have to think about loads of stuff, from infinite tabs that eat lines to newlines, what about code indents, what about... yada yada

1:55 AM
Wow. I'll get my 500 helpful flags yet...

fedora 17 was named beefy miracle? what happens if you abbreviate that to BM?

well, Ubuntu had PP.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing oh yeah, not to mention the unicode spaces/returns

@AbrahamVanHelpsing At least its not "JB"

@mateo_salta just something to think about with a whitespace detector
also:

Should there be an auto-freeze regex for Watch!! ? seems like it would nuke a lot of these

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I agree.
Ask it on MSO
BTW, adding comments asking people to flag has helped don't you think?
It's never been deleted this fast.

middle of the road. i think you have some "nuke that junk" users in room

yeah, comments are good, helps the down-voters to flag it as well, nuking is good too

Who is wasting close votes on this stuff?

weird that most of them are tagged mingw32. just an observation.

Q: Should there be an auto-freeze or auto remove from common circulation regex?

AbrahamVanHelpsingIf the powers that be take a look at recent spam flags for: Watch!! on AskUbuntu specifically for sure, you'll see what I mean. It could be a significant indicator at least for a time. Other suggested, but more complicated indicators have included extended white-space.

Good @AbrahamVanHelpsing.
Might want to add a little more detail however.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing good talk, I like the "osha -> ocean" part (the one you posted earlier)

yerp. i was more pointing to don't get turned off by the "why linux sucks" bullet...oh nm, you were talking about the earlier one. it was pretty epic too.

lol, they made it purple

What purple??

oh, sorry @seth talking about the videos @AbrahamVanHelpsing is posting.

@mateo_salta Oh..

2:32 AM
i think one was related and the other was worth mentioning

yeah, the purple comment is about Ubuntu.

@Seth, a while ago you asked about the color of links. The SE site "User Experience" has quite a lot on the topic. Two links: ux.stackexchange.com/q/29061/28214 and ux.stackexchange.com/q/14194/28214. There's a lot of other interesting (relative to one's real life of course) stuff there.

Check the chat history on that. Will Wheaton head shave bet type of thing

@Lucio yes, that's it

haha, now I understand. Hilarious!

at the begging I didn't understand, because I see your new avatar there
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Unfortunely I can't see the @FEichinger avatar's change

@Takkat i thought it was available for quite some time. it was called powerboost or something
@Mahesh eeeeh

I am so not into Windows that I know nothing about all those boosting tweaking optimizing stuff any more
<-- always felt that an OS which needs tweaking to become usable is pre-alpha

9:00 AM
@Takkat actually, that's a thing that uses the USB drive for extra swap of sorts
its called readyboost
ReadyBoost is a disk cache component of Microsoft Windows NT, first introduced with Windows Vista. It works by using flash memory, a USB flash drive, SD card, CompactFlash or any kind of portable flash mass storage system as a cache. An internal SSD can also be used for increased performance, but has the same limitations as smaller flash drives (such as 32 GB per cache file). Overview Using ReadyBoost-capable flash memory (NAND memory devices) for caching allows Windows 7 and Vista to service random disk reads with better performance than without the cache. This caching applies...

I thought it must be something of that kind... weird that an OS really benefits from such a hack.

Hey guys can you tell me how do I login into my GitHub account using the command git? I already followed this (help.github.com/articles/set-up-git) tutorial from the official website but it don't explain how to login using my password.

@Zignd Did you set up your ssh keys and 'publish' them to github?
That tutorial is the best explanation for getting started.
A long time ago, I used vimcasts.org/episodes/… to get started and had no issues. Even though it is focused on dotfiles, Skip to 2:00 for specifics.

Q: How do I remove windows 7 from dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 and then install windows 8?

Mohamed ElsayedI have a dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. I want to remove Windows 7 only and then install Windows 8. What should I do? All I want is to replace Windows 7 With Windows 8. I installed Ubuntu from cd (NOT from wubi.exe)

Don't we have a question on that?
I've seen it many times...
Anyhow, I'm really not sure that's off-topic..

I remember that

4:42 PM
So, I did that.
And he changed his.

but you changed it yesterday
backing to normally

oh yes..

Wanted to check + prove if it still works.

I read that question too :P
@FEichinger Do you know what game is: S4E2 ??
I don't know very much about that :D

4:46 PM
It could be Sonic 4: Episode 2.
Seems reasonable.

yeah, it seams to be that. Otherwise, I see TV series googling it :S

Well, S4E2 is usually the shorthand for "Season 4 Episode 2" ... Or "SSSSEE" ... All of which could also have game equivalents.

haha, ok
@FEichinger Do you know why this post have 6 dupe flags and it's still open?

Dupe flags & votes expire.

What?

4:50 PM
They still stay listed, but they don't count for closure.

So, a mod do the job, right?

Yup.

then..
@jokerdino I'm still waiting for your services here! :P

it's just a close vote away. i'll leave the community.

ok, thanks anyway ;)

5:03 PM
@FEichinger Correct :P
Sorry for Abbreviating
so, any specific graphic card that can handle games like that under 4k Rs ?
Thank You

11:07 PM
I'll have a screenshot shortly.

@GeorgeEdison So you have openssl all sorted out?

Not yet - but I did discover a workaround. The library that is using OpenSSL has an option to disable certificate verification. That's not a long-term solution but it will work for now since data is never sent from the device.

Erm okay. So I can mitm your https connection. Awesome. ;)

It's just for pulling data from a Git repo.
If it were pushing data, then that could be a problem.

jrg
and good luck mitm'ing a git repo pull.

11:15 PM
That too

@jrg Why?

jrg
because git will complain really loud if you mess with it.

Hey, it would just be an extra commit. There would be a noticeable initial delay, but you could legitimately run git.

Well, anyway, it's either insecure SSL support (in the first version of the app) or no SSL support at all.
Most people won't care since they're pulling from a public repo. anyway.

It was just giving you a hard time.

11:17 PM
:P

jrg
yes, but something to keep in mind

Believe me - I completely understand the implications of bypassing certificate authentication.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing i'll probably try to have my production env be a mix of centos and ubuntu

@jrg Interesting.
But your Linode is going to be cheap soon thanks to the referral. :P
The prices are tempting though.

jrg
let me put it this way.

For what I'm paying now, I could get 4 times as much RAM and a ton of extra bandwidth.

i'm broke, and i'm using them. because for $5/month, why the heck not.
