12:00 PM
Someone just said this

@kalina <3 Zooey Deschanel

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Java's syntax and semantics do have the virtue of being easy to work with programmatically
I haven't seen the level of IDE support Java enjoys for any other language, although I haven't been looking very hard

DOWNLOADS THE INTERNET
just downloading enough content to cause contention in this region

12:15 PM
I suppose C# tooling could be just as powerful, although things can still break given that programs get to emit custom bytecodes and all that jazz.

right, my list has just completed

@spugsley I'm... not? Uhoh. Maybe time to change my password.

I need more ideas
NAME SOME GOOD TV SHOWS
thanks

@kalina the Linux git repository. Clone it

oh dear, what did I just do
name some good TV shows that are younger than I am

12:17 PM
Ducktales?
ducks

younger than you.....
/me thinks what makes him feel old

Ducktales isn't that old surely

in the night garden?
aladdin is like 20 yrs old :/

@badp lol

the disney one

12:18 PM
ducktales is much older than me
but that reminds me
just before I fell asleep lastnight something popped into my head that I wanted to download

@kalina uh, I have clear memories of it so it can't have happened before 1993 or so

but what was it @kalina?

this could be a problem, because my memory at that point in time begins a purge of all non-essential information

although my clear memories might very well suffer from delayed runs (dubbing) or just plain old reruns

@badp Original run: September 18, 1987 – November 28, 1990

12:19 PM
Okay, it's mostly older than me too.

syndication happened 1996-1999 though
wait, @badp are we nearly the same age?
is that what you're saying?

I don't think so, I'm just saying I was born in 1989
so more than half of it is older than me
thus "mostly" older than me

ok so you are a full four years older than me
I hope you feel old
because you are

lol, I look at most of the people born after me and I shake my head in despair

@badp I am probably included in this list of people

12:21 PM
@badp I'm shaking my head at most of the channel.

@kalina you're borderline
2

@badp Ditto

@badp at least you said 'you're'

*shakes head at most of Bridge*

@fredley doesn't look at me and shake his head in despair

12:22 PM
@kalina well, I wouldn't know about your borderline; I suppose it isn't too awful :P

I think

shakes head at even fredley

@kalina Correct. That's pity.

@fredley wow
you just did that
that just happened

@kalina There is almost no limit on things that I will do.

12:22 PM
@fredley Have you considered modship?

@fredley so many images just popped into my head, they're not pretty images

@badp Yes.
@kalina Eye of the beholder, etc.

@badp just before the next election, I'm going to invite 500 of my friends onto arqade to vote for me

@fredley Good. Lack of restraint is good for reaching the highest levels of mod abuse

just saying

12:23 PM
@kalina If you have 500 friends who can reach 300 reps, great

@kalina You don't want to be a mod, remember?

@fredley I didn't say I would accept it
and it's more that I would be a bad mod, rather than not wanting to

@kalina Haha. That's quite a sophisticated troll

@kalina you can't nominate for it and not accept it

@kalina Terrible. You would be a terrible mod.

12:24 PM
@badp no but I can ban you immediately after being given it and have it removed

@badp I wish we had third-person nominations
@kalina Become mod, rage-quit site, delete account.

@kalina Turns out that being suspended and a moderator doesn't really work that way

@fredley this could work too

Most of the site checks whether or not you're a mod before it checks whether or not you're suspended

I have a bullet proof nomination post that has worked every time I've used it as well

12:25 PM
I did science about it a little while ago, but now suspending requires sending no less than seven emails

@kalina I can has?

@fredley no, it's not the sort of thing that you would write

@kalina :(

"Vote for me or I KEEL YOU. XOXO, Kalina."

it's very existential

12:26 PM
@kalina I'm not so good at existing.

besides, by the next election I'm probably going to be the first person on the site with most of the steward gold badges

@badp 10/10 would vote again

@badp couldn't I withdraw my nomination immediately after it's apparent that I would have been successful?
surely they can't stop me from withdrawing

@kalina I don't honestly remember when does the withdraw button become unavailable, if ever

@kalina I'm aiming for the first gold tag badge

12:29 PM
I am disappointed in this oversight

Honestly I don't feel like nominating myself on the SO elections with "TEST NOMINATION PLEASE IGNORE" to find out

@fredley I am more of a generalist than a gold tag badge sort of person

@badp Haha, that's excellent

Oh, I know! @YiJiang'sEvilClone. Nominate yourself with "TEST NOMINATION PLEASE IGNORE" and find out

@kalina Is generalist even possible on this site? A difficult badge.

12:29 PM
@badp you should

@badp It's available during Primary I think

@fredley not yet
it's why I've been asking so many random questions in the top tags over the last few months

@kalina I need 70 or more helpful flags before I can do that really. :effort:

@kalina You'd need to start playing Minecraft

we're about 15 tags away from being generalist-capable
@fredley never.

12:30 PM
(On SO you need to have a bunch of badges to nominate)

I am going to work on making SimCity eligible for generalist
@badp if we had that restriction here, only a handful of non-mods would be eligible to nominate themselves

@badp On SO?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Yes

I am in favour of having that restriction
so we don't end up with more mods like @badp

Don't you have enough rep on SO too?

12:31 PM
@kalina ehhh, most of it isn't unreasonable.

@badp I didn't say it was unreasonable
I'm saying those restrictions should be mandatory on all established sites

@kalina lol, as I said I'm only ~70 or so flags away from meeting the bar on SO and I've been very much less active there than I've been here
and finding flag-worthy stuff on SO... not too hard, probably

I have 165 rep on askUbuntu just from editing people's posts
@badp just run TIARA against it

I actually have reached 2k without trying on Ask Ubuntu

that's how I did the last 100 flags on here
I could do it again right now for another 100 accepted flags
but figured I shouldn't be responsible for removing all of the bad content
and I'm nearly at the cap for maximum number of flags you're allowed
I get 48 flags per day now

12:34 PM
Seeing Lord Torgamus/Popular Demand run for SO modship makes me happy

since getting to 48 has been a nightmare, I'm guessing the cap is 50
I'm against inviting friends here, last time I did that I got in trouble because of their actions

Here, as in, Stack Exchange sites?

yes

Morning

o/

12:39 PM
@kalina so your army of 500 friends isn't going to invade us after all?

I might bring some of them here, I keep getting asked where I've disappeared to

/me found a fake fluttershy lastnight

@kalina Not worried that word would spread?

Hiding out on freenode.

@fredley I am worried, but it wouldn't be me spreading it

12:40 PM
@djsmiley2k Who would have thought that multiple people would use such a nickname?

I know, shocking.

@kalina Surely word would spread anyway

@djsmiley2k I would be very surprised if you found the real Fluttershy

hell, "badp" isn't a great nickname but I find even that is taken on some places

don't sign up there and tell them where I am.

12:41 PM
@badp I think all four letter combinations are taken on popular services

Do they bring @kalina approved anger?

@kalina No. Alex seems like a nice chap. Strapline: crackhead, avatar: Swastika.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone There's a ton of unreserved 3 letter nicks on Reddit apparently.

@djsmiley2k no they bring superior trolling skills

@badp Gold Rush

12:42 PM
@badp Maybe reddit clean up unused accounts?

@fredley we were in a clan in Neocron called "Malevolent Crackheads"

@kalina How delightful

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I landed myself on bp_ years after it started

Read the Chat. [v] Checked.
Now I can start my week =)

@fredley we were the evil griefers that ultimately ruined the game for everybody, apparently.

12:43 PM
@kalina grindcore's sig is lovely too.
@kalina I can see that

@kalina I like vampire's self-invalidating prophecy

anyway don't read too much into that thread, it devolves into talking about one of my ex-stalkers

Quite a lot of misogyny going on there too...

@fredley oh yeah, tell me about it.

lol

12:44 PM
oh wait you validated him
bah.

i love people who threaten to smash my face in online.

I used to mod that forum, I cleaned it up so badly that most of them left

wooo. scared now.

it was far far worse in 2008-2009

@kalina but hey, you have three friends for it!

12:46 PM
@badp rofl
so anyway, are you sure you want me to get these guys to come to stackexchange?
are you SURE?

that's not what I said

it'll be funny to see them all banned.

I didn't think so

@kalina Please no.
I honestly can't imagine what these people would be like in real life. How do they exist?

@fredley I won't link you the other pits of despair I've previously inhabited then

12:47 PM
@kalina Thanks. My mind is boggling all over the place.

> Honestly, the shit that I have to put up with from my future wife....
2

Is there a pool to Mods? I looked and didn't find it o.O

I guess you'll all believe me if I now say something like "I was the most normal person on there"

@kalina You're one of the most normal people here too

@StrixVaria that guy never quite crossed the border into being a stalker
he got very very close to it though
after he mspaint'd a picture of my face onto a pornstar in a... position

12:49 PM
@kalina Out of interest, why did you hang out with these guys to begin with?

I'd probably break his face if he ever found me in real life
@fredley Neocron

@kalina Worth it?

@kalina a picture of your face? A rookie mistake!

@kalina You sent them pictures of your face?

@badp actually, I posted a 'hello I am new' thread when I first started modding the place, with a full body picture of me

12:50 PM
I hope that post is gone

it was the last time I ever posted a picture of me on the internet
yes
the fallout from what happened after that got about 30 people banned
which is why I would be a terrible mod

lol, that doesn't sound like terrible moderation to me

my perception is that I behaved incorrectly

I feel that most of the time forums are undermoderated
well of course it depends on the specifics, the lengths, the posts, whatever

The most fun forum I have ever been a part of had almost no moderation. No real-life threats and nothing blatantly illegal, and everything else was fine.

12:53 PM
@kalina You didn't behave incorrectly, just naively.

well the specifics are, they found out I had strong opinions against the pornography industry and proceeded to utilise a picture of me with pictures of porn
and what started off as temp banning escalated to perm banning, which escalated to deleting people

ugh Why are we talking about forums? Forums are awful.

one of the other forums I used doesn't appear to exist anymore

That was over a period of what amount of time?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone years

12:57 PM
@OrigamiRobot I'm just happy that the core of this chatroom is mostly a no-BS one when it comes to non-mod abuse

'Batman' brings in suspect to Bradford police

@kalina Finally somebody noticed you!

@badp lol

The only forums I've enjoyed are the d2jsp forums and that is only because it directly benefits me in Diablo 2. Anything not in the trade forum (and 50% of the things in it) are complete garbage.

I am generally allergic to forums these days

1:00 PM
Honestly I still find most forums tolerable. Reddit being perhaps on the top of the spectrum for tolerability
I just don't want to be active in them.

@kalina I feel like you'd fit in at the one I mentioned, but I don't want to use its name here.

Reddit is in my top 5 list of things I hate for all time.
Which currently only consists of 4 things.

Reddit has assholes in them. So does every site ever
Sure, reddit allows assholes to close themselves in nice and tidy echo chambers, which is less than awesome and should probably be fixed.

Reddit has extra special assholes that think they invent everything on the internet.
And the structure makes one of the features of forums I hate even worse.

Tree-based conversations are evil.

1:03 PM
@OrigamiRobot The two subreddits I really follow are /r/tf2 and /r/homestuck where obviously the source material is mostly not the users' own, so I guess I don't have experience with that
As for trees... you can collapse trains of discussions you aren't interested in and skip derails. That's invaluable to me
shrug

@badp Just unsub from the front-page subreddits

Fun fact: 3 out of 4 things on that list are due to the people that support the things.

I wonder if Discourse is actually going to wind up being anything.

The only thing I hate for all time regardless of outside influence is Andy Samberg.

@StrixVaria I'm afraid it might not be bold enough to matter in the long run

1:06 PM
@badp From the little bit I messed with it, it barely seemed to have anything extra on top of normal forums.
I think they might be finding why forums are designed the way they are :P

The main thing that matters is the more-solid-than-average tech infrastructure

@StrixVaria So you're opposed to snailmail.

like

@OrigamiRobot I've never used reddit
on account of everybody on FA talked about reddit

you know how here we can edit each others' posts pretty freely and we don't abuse the fuck out of it?

1:10 PM
so I branded reddit as 'bad enough for FA people to use'

I don't know why the same can't happen on forums

@badp you do abuse it, I keep logs

"here" being site and meta

I never edited peoples posts on FA, I just deleted them

where 2k is sufficient

1:11 PM
@badp I thought you meant chat
and tbh, the only reason it works here is because edits by new users have to be approved by established users

no, I didn't, because there's no mutual edit here

Wait, I think I thought of a 5th thing: Sloths.

and that's why I love stackexchange

Sloths are awful.

Sloths are such badasses.

1:11 PM
it's properly community driven

@kalina but new user restrictions eventually stop

@badp bad users rarely get the rep to cause damage
because rep is also community driven

Fuck that. If I saw a sloth crawling towards me, I would throw up. They are so disgusting.

@kalina I know a Furious Angels clan from Lineage II. A bunch of great guys, and pretty damn good PvPers.

@OrigamiRobot Because they don't do anything and yet they're not extinct, making the amount of effort you put to keep alive feel that much more demeaning?

1:12 PM
@kalina writing correct answers and being awful human beings aren't mutually exclusive

@MartinSojka it will be the same people, we dominated every MMO
@badp no but they are generally pretty reliant on each other

@GraceNote No because they look like demon pig monkeys and move like something from a nightmare.

Oh, they never dominated there.
They were always a small clan.

@MartinSojka we've only ever had 10-15 of us playing in any particular game

1:13 PM
But I loved it when they were around, always a fun game, both on their side and fighting them.

does this mean you know Leff or Pulse?

Q: Dota-like games (LoL, HoN, etc.) in which real money or online friends can help during the game

Gazi AlankusLet's assume that you are playing LoL (or some other MOBA game) and you want to gain advantage against the other team. Is there any external help that you can get in any of these games? Would your credit card be of any use? Would any online friend that is not currently in your team be able to h...

Edit

Can't say I've ever heard of Furious Angels but I'm not exactly a common MMO player.

or "know of"

@GraceNote Long time no see =)

1:14 PM
Thank you. I was only gone the weekend.

@GraceNote xD

my weekend disappeared

A FULL THREE DAYS? OMG

I spent the entire weekend in an ice belt mining

@kalina Same T_T

1:15 PM
seriously... disappeared

@kalina No, the names don't ring a bell. Likely some different group. :)

@kalina Time jump kind?

@badp More like, 48 hours.

personally this is the first time I heard of that clan name

@MartinSojka also known as FAnG

1:16 PM
61 if you include transit time.

back during the Counterstrike days

@GraceNote What the... 13h in "traffic" o.O?

btw @kalina reminiscing the old days is one of the first signs of age.
I must jet. See you laters gents!

@badp you are mean
and, you're older than me
by four years

RUN @badp I'll hold her while I can!

1:18 PM
@kalina yep! how could I tell you the signs of age without having experienced them first?

@badp bla

I Hope I'm the youngster here... but I'm sure not T_T

@GraceNote thanks for the encouragement btw, later levels unsurprisingly had the same pattern and the two hours of painful exercise made them easy to handle

@kalina No. The main guys back then had chars named SeraN, FlobberNL, Loffe, NoMuscles (a nice Orc fighter ;)), Sail, SatChan, vteK, Yanao ...

(the 2nd sign of age is that you stop thinking in terms of growth and start thinking in terms of aging)

1:20 PM
Flobber and Loffe I know

So, what to watch while eating lunch?

Anyway, old times. :)

@badp Woohoo!

So is anyone older here than Jan 1984?

@djsmiley2k Dec 1975.

1:21 PM
@djsmiley2k @agent86

o_O ok winner. :(

@djsmiley2k 11/83

@djsmiley2k 10/83

@LessPop_MoreFizz old
@fbueckert old
you know you're both ten years older than me, right?
ten!
like, a decade

@kalina Pfft. I'm not even in distinguished territory yet.

1:27 PM
I'll be fair to you and say it's not quite a decade
but 9 years and 8 months is pretty close to a decade

I still have trouble believing people born after 1990 are even old enough to walk.

@StrixVaria I resent this
even more, before the edit

I was trying to think of something that happens early in childhood development but I avoid children like the plague so it was difficult.
3

I'm not a huge fan of children either, too much crying and screaming
I think there are laws against locking children outside until they stop screaming
or getting them stoned so they fall asleep

@kalina Ten years, hundred years, who's counting?

1:32 PM
@MartinSojka I do
LOL, we have a keycode lock on the door to our server room

@kalina Your age has the same digit in front of it as mine does right now.

somebody just entered the wrong code and walked into the door

And now, I'm off to go repair a car. later chat.

@LessPop_MoreFizz o/
I still haven't remembered what my last thought was before sleeping lastnight

@kalina "Leff" is using the same name in Planetside 2? In this case I ran into them on Miller there.

1:35 PM
@MartinSojka it is very likely
and they would be playing PS2 as well
we stormed the original planetside a lot when it came out
is the other half of the community after the great split that WoW caused

Heh. :D

Leff's half of the community created furious-gaming
hinch's half stayed at furious-angels
FA died, FG survived

1:52 PM
GOOD MORNING BRIDGE

GOOD AFTERNOON @SPUGSLEY

@StrixVaria we really should be bestest friends :3

what's the link that talk about the Good Subjective questions??

Robert Cartaino on September 29, 2010

Stack Exchange is about questions with objective, factual answers. We’ve been crystal clear about this for as long as I can remember, even back to the earliest, pre-beta days of Stack Overflow. It’s right there in the standard Stack Exchange FAQ:

What kind of questions should I not ask here?

Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered!

Thus, questions that are not answerable — discussions, debates, opinions — should be closed as subjective. It seems simple enough: Fact good; opinion and discussion bad. But why? …

@kalina <3 tks
Bookmarked now =)
