The most fun forum I have ever been a part of had almost no moderation. No real-life threats and nothing blatantly illegal, and everything else was fine.

and what started off as temp banning escalated to perm banning, which escalated to deleting people

The only forums I've enjoyed are the d2jsp forums and that is only because it directly benefits me in Diablo 2. Anything not in the trade forum (and 50% of the things in it) are complete garbage.

Honestly I still find most forums tolerable. Reddit being perhaps on the top of the spectrum for tolerability

I just don't want to be active in them.

@OrigamiRobot The two subreddits I really follow are /r/tf2 and /r/homestuck where obviously the source material is mostly not the users' own, so I guess I don't have experience with that

As for trees... you can collapse trains of discussions you aren't interested in and skip derails. That's invaluable to me
