10:29 PM
^^^ IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIIIIVVEEEE!!!

"STOP LAUGHING AT ME! I'M TOUGH!"

@voretaq7 that's not terrifying, that's ADORABLE

@DavidPerry lemmie tell ya, when you're actually trying to collect a gecko that's having a meltdown like that it's pretty terrifying
they can be vicious little fuckers if they're not properly socialized

@voretaq7 I used to collect alligator lizards 4 or 5 times that size by just letting them latch onto my finger
they're not so terrifying once you realize their bites don't really hurt much

@DavidPerry Funny, that's how the vet got mine out of the carrier case last time we had to visit
he wouldn't let go for 5 minutes even with the squirt bottle treatment.
(in fairness I think he knew the vet was gonna clip his tail off...)

10:37 PM

@Alenanno scroll up a bit...

@DavidPerry Ah omg
I took it from you! LOL

lol

I must be tired.
@voretaq7 what the?

10:41 PM
@Alenanno Goblin shark - apparently with some kind of camera/recording artifact because WTF at the bite part.
but that's what makes it a terrifying NIGHTMARE monster as opposed to just a regular monster :)

@voretaq7 That's gross. :D But cool.

@DavidPerry meh, I disapprove of the unnecessary cruelty to the octopus

@voretaq7 the room isn't called "cruelty-free terrifying nightmare monsters"
and I have in fact had nightmares involving sannakji

(I like to think the ones I eat died quickly without having their limbs hacked off first. I'm probably wrong about that, but let me have my illusions)
@DavidPerry I'M TELLING PETA!
they'll... idunno... SOMETHING
set my pets free to die a horrible death in the wild maybe

10:44 PM
actually they are humanely slaughtered
the tentacles keep going because squid have a highly distributed nervous system
sort of miniature pseudo-brains that control each tentacle

PETA: You shouldn't have pets!
Me: It's a goldfish. A brilliant mutations uniquely ill-suited to life in the wild. If I let it go a bird will eat it.

In my island we have this:
I never ate it though.
So I don't know what it's like. But it's very famous and I think requested too.

@Alenanno I've had similar things

@DavidPerry I might try that...

the goat stomach cheese is actually more interesting to me

10:49 PM
@freiheit I'd be too worried about choking, those tentacles still have suckers attached

@DavidPerry They're small enough to have no chance of blocking your breathing

@freiheit yes but when you're halfway through the meal and it's climbing back up... :P

@freiheit I'm not saying I'm afraid of dying, I just don't want to experience choking on a still-writhing squid tentacle

@DavidPerry It's a moment. As soon as you swallow, it's gone.
But I guess you're worried about that moment. :P

10:52 PM

@Alenanno Honestly I'd be worried about having an Ambassador G'kar moment

I think the only still-living animal I've eaten (other than accidental insects) is oysters...

I've eaten some weird stuff, stuff most people wouldn't go near, but I draw the line at stuff that's still moving

Demon caterpiller! Cordyceps is cool stuff

@DavidPerry Depends on the movement
I've no problem eating oysters/clams
I'd be OK with maggots and such as a component of other, tastier foods

10:59 PM
By the way, I wouldn't eat meat that has not been cooked. Unless I'm sure that it's reasonably safe (I did everything at home).
I found the video. :P

@Alenanno No sushi, then?
@voretaq7 @DavidPerry Oysters really don't move once they're cut off the shell...

@freiheit they wiggle a little
not nearly as much as clams though

@freiheit Sushi has some safe measures. You must keep it at a certain temperature for 24 hours before eating, if I remember correctly. I'd do that by myself. :P

@Alenanno I wouldn't trust myself to get it right
plus I don't know enough about sushi to be really good at selecting the fish

By the way, I'm not sure Sushi always implies fish...

11:03 PM
I've done homemade salmon nigiri

It's a roll of rice with somethin in it.

@Alenanno Yes, absolutely, there are a number of safety measures with sushi. Oysters are easy: get reputably farmed oysters and don't injure yourself getting the shell open.

@Alenanno it doesn't, it actually refers to the vinegar rice

@DavidPerry Thanks for confirmation. :P

raw fish would be sashimi

11:04 PM
Yeah, you're right.
What I'm willing to try is Takoyaki, Yakitori and Ramen.
How did we get to talk about food from terrifying monsters?

@Alenanno If it terrifies you, COOK IT AND EAT IT!
2
@Alenanno it doesn't though that's what's usually prepared because that's what Japan has to work with :)

@voretaq7 lmao
AAAARGH A GOBLIN! ... kills it and cooks it
But they taste nasty.

In my experience, a lot of people know roughly what sushi is (and that it often involves raw fish), but fairly few people know what sashimi is
@Alenanno What about Goblin Shark?

@Alenanno they also make you sick. (Things you learn from Nethack)

@freiheit They get confused.
@freiheit DAT MOUTH.

11:10 PM
I wonder if they make goblin shark fin soup...

They make it out from its mouth too... But when you try to eat it, it comes out of itself.

@Alenanno I hate when my food tries to eat me

@freiheit Must be quite scary. :D

you wanna eat something. . .

Yet another reason to usually stay low on the food chain...

11:13 PM
^ Eat that :)
(turns out monkfish is damn tasty!)

I've had it's liver plenty of times before.. not sure if I ever had a different part of it...

@freiheit monkfish liver? I didn't know that was a thing
there are a couple of places in K-Town NYC that make a monkfish casserole/stew/soupy thing that's pure awesomeness though
it's basically hunks of monkfish meat, and usually some vertebrae and stuff

@voretaq7 "Ankimo". Sushi or sashimi. I guess technically it's monkfish liver pate

@freiheit hmm, never had it
most liver is served as pate though
<- not a fan of liver
mental block about eating another creature's poison filter.

11:28 PM
the poison filter chopped fine, mixed with some fat... maybe stick all that into an intestinal lining, because stuffing chopped meat and fat into an intestinal lining always makes it better...

@freiheit cram the whole thing into a sheep's stomach and you're on yer way to a right fine Haggis there laddie!

@voretaq7 With some oats and chopped lung bits, sure...
I've never had Haggis, but I'd be willing to try it... I have the right facial hair for it

@freiheit I had the pleasure of attending a Burns Supper once and found Haggis to be quite tolerable

I think the only component of Haggis I've never eaten is lung... It's pretty much a fancy sausage...
Just pour enough whisky into my glass...

@freiheit not all haggis has lung

11:41 PM
If I'm going to try haggis, it's gotta have all the bits. ;)
