12:16 AM
hey @flabricorn: I'd like to talk to your dad about his job for a school project.
he seems like he's got a cool job.

12:34 AM
Yes, long time no see indeed @AmithKK

2 hours later…
2:11 AM
Why does AU lie about my rep?
This is my rep
Jokerdino
interrupted

What?

But on my profile it says I have only 350 ;A;

It shows the total rep across the network in chat.

@jokerdino So... all the different sites put together?

Yeah, something like that.

2:12 AM
ugh that sucks ...
whatever -.-

@JorgeCastro: Okay, plugin has been updated, tested, pushed to GitHub, and pushed to WordPress.

@GeorgeEdison -claps-?

BTW, @GeorgeEdison can we have a separate display name field in 2buntu? :O
Apart from the real name that is.

@jokerdino Didn't I do that?

Really?

2:19 AM
There's a first name / last name field.

I can only see my name. Not a display name.

If you edit your profile.

So, I can't have both or something?

@jokerdino Then you need to change your first / last name to whatever you want your display name to be.

Ah, alright.

2:21 AM
Also, the comments are messed up. I entered the wrong URLs when I migrated them on Disqus.
I'll try and sort them out on Sunday.

oops.
So, we have 10 members in the team.

Amith was also going to come up with a logo.
We're getting about 140 visitors a day according to Google Analytics.

Not bad.

2:54 AM
@jrg Wanna talk to the Malwarebytes UI designer? I can set that up. :)

3:05 AM
@Flabricorn Your Dad designed the Malwawrebyets UI?

Got some spam to fry.

Q: Why I need Belstaff Jacken?

Karthyna StevenBelstaff Jacken are good at http://www.belstaffjackenstore.de. Why I have to buy this brand? Who can give me some suggetions?

@iSeth Designing a new one.

just messing around with stuff what do you think

@mateo_salta Awesome!

3:13 AM
2buntu logo?

@mateo_salta I like it.

But I think @AmithKK is making one too
@Flabricorn Thats great news. It needs a new one
cool job too

@iSeth We've got the man to do it, and it's sweet because he can work remotely.

cool, I just thought I would have some fun, It probably wouldn't work with web banners and stuff (I usually like print better than web)

@Flabricorn Thats always great... my Dad did that for a while... It was great while it lasted.
@mateo_salta I think it would work.
just not for the current design I guess...

3:15 AM
Mmmmmhm.

It might replace that though
idk

Oooooo. Prettay.

@mateo_salta What did you do it in? Inkscape?

:( on AI

AI?

3:18 AM
I love inkskape.

@Flabricorn For the life of me I can't figure out of to use in... to used to GIMP

adobe illustrator

@jokerdino hmm OK...

@iSeth I find gimp to be underpowered. I haven't used anything since 2.6 though. That much better?

Inkscape Is nice, I could redo it in Inkscape. @iSeth its a frame of mind, you need to think in lines and stuff and not graphics

3:20 AM
@Flabricorn 2.8 hasn't changed much. They are working on a new UI though.
It really doesn't do more than its name. Gnu Image Manipulation Program.
So, not really for creating.

From what I know, gtk came from Gimp

@mateo_salta That makes sense... I'll have to try it again.

I just find I can draw with inkskape, and GIMP I feel like I can make bad clip art. It also bothers me that they have a bell pepper (ftw?) brush but not a star.

they made groups for layers in the new gimp, they changed the save/save as and export

GTK from GIMP? Sounsd weird...
@Flabricorn Yeah, GIMP is more for Image Manipulation, while Inkscape is for Image Creation

3:23 AM
GTK stands for GIMP toolkit.

But we still have a green bell pepper brush and not a star.

@jokerdino Ah, I though it stood for Gnome Toolkit :D

well, it is currently maintained by the members of the gnome foundation.
but it really was developed to be used by GIMP.

Wow, look at all this interesting conversation.
I'm going to sleep.
BBT.

@Flabricorn That's what I don't like about time zones... well goodnight.

3:30 AM
Yeah, I am going to sleep too.

@iSeth Where are you stationed?

Night @jokerdino
@Flabricorn Washington

No, it's not night. It's 1130 AM

@iSeth DC?

@Flabricorn DC? I thought it was Ohio

3:31 AM
Sorry.
That was an editing thing.

Oh, no Seattle Washington

It is Ohio. Boring old Ohio.
@iSeth Cool. How old are you?

@Flabricorn Not sure I want to disclose that to the world... But I'm pretty close to you

Not to intrude, but your askubuntu profile gives nothing about you. :)
Closer to @jrg?

Yeah, I know... Don't have much to put on there...

3:34 AM
Okay, now I'm actually sleep time thing. I have work thing to do later. No time for talk. Only time for walrus.

Ok Night

hm, only a diagonal star, and a pepper on GIMP? I guess you can rotate the diagonal star...
Oh, @Flabricorn create a new brush, select the diamond in the bursh editor and put spikes on it! Star!

hmm @mateo_salta interesting.

yeah, i'm going to sleep too... later

later
errg... so many people on EST....

3:54 AM
I'm not!

@GeorgeEdison Where are you? Its Canada right?

Q: Changing an answer after a bug has been reported

mspencerIn this question, the person has noticed something that appears to be a bug. I first wrote an answer describing how to report a bug in the program and PPA he noticed. Then, as I noticed this problem myself, I reported it as a bug. Should I change my answer to say that this has been reported as a...

Alt+Tab is misbehaving, I expect to switch open applications but it shows a prompt which has "Type your command" as placeholder. It is a 12.04.

@SantoshKumar Try Super+Tab
The thing you see is called the HUD

Which key is called Super key?

The windows key
@jokerdino Is the Window Switcher and HUD toggle in mechanig?

Probably.

@AmithKK No, Super+Tab is not working.

5:47 AM
I suppose you disabled app switching.

@jokerdino Where is that setting?

In system settings > keyboard.

They should port streamlined messaging to unity

@AmithKK Anyway, I fixed all of the bugs in search box earlier.

@jokerdino Awesome

5:49 AM
Can you give me the link to the bug report?

@jokerdino I can switch applications, but HUD is appearing as well.
annoying

You said you saw something in bugzilla.

@jokerdino Yeah, I don't remember where it is :/
How did you fix it?

just use the text length and play with it

That's what I did -_-
How did you solve the third one?

5:52 AM
I just said it. I used the text length.
I pushed it to the git repo. so you can take a look if you want.
And yeah, I gave credits to you for the workaround.
So, congrats. You earned yourself a place in Credits later on.
btw, why did you push to master?

Oh, I forgot to specify amithkk in the push
Can I just invoke the unity dash, without the shell?

what's that supposed to mean?

Like I can do something like unity-2d-shell --only-dash

don't know. you still on 12.04?

Yeah
12.10 iso downloading.. probably :P

6:02 AM
yeah whatever man.

6:39 AM
@AmithKK if you want to work on something, i have appmenu to do. you can try that.

@jokerdino How do you reparent :P
I got screwed there :P

why do you want to reparent?
we are not reparenting at all. we are just loading the corresponding notebook in the box.

ohk
I'll do that

it would only work if you run the python file.

1 hour later…

hello guys...
got a doubt..
i have ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable in apt
i m running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
when i login via cinnamon -the panel is at top
and when i try cinnamon 2d - there is no panel at all...!
what is this issue ?
can i try adding ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly to apt
will there be any conflicts ?

No conflicts
latest version will be installed

so i dont have to do anything abt the last ppa added and can proceed with the new ppa ....@AmithKK

yeah

k let me try..thanks @AmithKK
what could be the issue with the current installation ? y is not loading the panel to the bottom of the screen ?
@am
@AmithKK is there any tweaks for this..as the ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly is a unstable one..

@AmithKK: Can you access your account on 2buntu?

8:11 AM
@GeorgeEdison I didn't get the pr email

Then hold on for one minute while I manually send it out.
@AmithKK Okay, check your email.

Q: error while trying to duel boot ubuntu alongside windows 8

BrianI recently purchased a new toshiba ultra book that comes pre-installed with windows 8. I'm trying to duel boot 12.10 with it and I have run into a problem with the installer. When I get to the page to pick the partitions i get this: http://i.stack.imgur.com/N7oQw.png No drives are listed and...

I can't believe this.
I've spent the last day or two trying to write a custom version of Django's wizard class because it would randomly jump to page 2.
AND NOW MY OWN CUSTOM VERSION IS RANDOMLY JUMPING TO PAGE 2!!!

Argh.

8:40 AM
done
@GeorgeEdison Bazinga! :P

Hey, I think I figured it out.

@GeorgeEdison Are you on fb?

Absolutely not.

I can't see that page.

8:46 AM
:P
i guess that's because i'm 14

@GeorgeEdison @AmithKK is there any tweaks for this..as the ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly is a unstable one..(retyped)

I dunno

> LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-WARNING: Trying to remove a child that doesn't believe we're it's parent.
Now this is a worrysome message to all parents. ;P

:O

Hi @jokerdino

it is a pretty funny one :P

This message pops up when I destroy my AppIndicator.

i see

10:10 AM
Or when I destroy my Gtk menu from the AppIndicator, rather.

i am going to have to write a search program in python.

That should be easy.

hm

I have a new bug here. This came as always "suddenly" and also affects my old program versions.

i am just wondering how it is supposed to work

10:12 AM
Happy searching. :/

good luck

I am almost about to give up.
Next step is install on my other box which is occupied by my kids.

saturdays.

@jokerdino: where do you have to search for

search the settings for our app

10:14 AM
Er

so, i guess i have to save all of the labels in a dict or a list

How can I retrieve an image from a webcam through php
I access img.php>I get a snapshot from the webcam

if 'entry' in list:

     print list

print (list)

10:16 AM
hm yes, we are on py3

get used to the brackets.
I discovered that most of py3 runs on py2.7 without a change

yeah, it is sort of backwards compatible

It does not work vice versa

but not forward compatible yes
ok this is what i want:
list1 = (list of strings)
list2 = (list of strings)
search string: return list
i need to think of the logic. >:

if string in list: shoud do it.

10:21 AM
so i search in each of the lists.
actually, that makes sense.
thanks!
though i might have to use regex

for i in list[i]:
^^pseudocode!!

:D

But it would be nice if it was that easy to write.

list1 = ["launcher","unity","perfect"]
list2 = ["settings","more","dash"]

biglist = [list1,list2]

for item in biglist:
    if "launcher" in biglist:
        print(item)
pseudocode
too buggy

It should work like that.

10:29 AM
I suppose

but needs unpseudofication.

>:)
@AmithKK will do it. nice guy he is

<-- hates bugs without error messages

you would have to insert all of the error messages then.

What if the bug resides on my external device? I could search forever...
And I only have one such device... :(

10:32 AM
:(

The fact that old versions that always worked are broken too speaks in favour of someting else but not my app.
Could be some package updates or my broken device...

hm maybe the lower level API changed?

I suspect a DBus thing but am not sure.

you testing on 12.04 or 12.10?

12.04

10:33 AM
there were some changes if i remember

There always were and will be changes :)

they break API all the time

I dont care what they break but they should not break my app!

:P

100 lines of code --> 1000 lines of bug workarounds.

10:36 AM
yeah, it is happening for us too

What worries me most is that I never get bugs reported on launchpad. This likely means nobody actually uses my app.

:/
you probably need to promote your app

That would mean I have to put more work into it.

lol
probably email one of the community blogs or something

1 min ago, by Takkat
That would mean I have to put more work into it.
;)

10:40 AM
well then. :P

My plan: first find the bug, then learn how to proper package, then put into ppa, then see how it goes-

yeah, no one ever wants to install from source these days

for good reasons.

Q: Closing general questions as duplicate to others the domain of which they include?

cipricusI have stumbled into this issue in relation with situations in which a general question is flagged as duplicate of a more specific one. Guys, are 'ffmpeg' and 'avconv' iterchangeable? I mean, are they both the same thing? (and if so, is avconv supposed to replace ffmpeg sooner or later?)

not exactly
ffmpeg got forked or renamed or something.

guys
i made a video about 2012
look

@jokerdino Are you sure? 'coz when you search ffmpeg in ubuntu software center, you'll notice that ffmpeg is provided in a "transitional package" and its description states:

jrg
@its_me you can use 99% of ffmpeg flags in avconv.

> This package contains the deprecated ffmpeg program. This package also serves as a transitional package to libav-tools. Users are advised to use avconv from the libav-tools package instead of ffmpeg.

Q: Who can tell me the difference and relation between ffmpeg, libav, and avconv

whywhen I run ffmpeg on ubuntu, it shows: ffmpeg ffmpeg version v0.8, Copyright (c) 2000-2011 the Libav developers built on Feb 28 2012 13:27:36 with gcc 4.6.1 This program is not developed anymore and is only provided for compatibility. The warning message from the ffmpeg program needs to be updated. It should instead say "*** THIS PROGRAM IS DEPRECATED ***\n" "This program is only provided for compatibility " "and will be removed in a future release. Please " "use avconv instead.\n" This is patched in Debian. See [1]. [Impact] - Users are seeing a different message everytime they run the ffmpeg program. The original message is causing confusion amongst general users of the ffmpeg who are not aware that the ffmpeg program provided in Ubuntu is the ffmpeg program originally made available from the Libav project. [Development Fix] - Message just needs to be updated. See [1]. Note that the ffmpeg binary has been dropped completely in the development tree in libav. [Stable Fix] - See [1]. [Test Case] - Just run the ffmpeg program. Running 'ffmpeg -L' is sufficient to see the warning. The original warning reads, "This program is not developed anymore and is only " "provided for compatibility. Use avconv instead " "
libav (Ubuntu)

thanks, I'll take a look

jrg
@jokerdino can you login here? 2buntu.com/admin

@jrg yeah, thought so. The man page is so long that I am finding it really hard to get started. There seem to be no good tuts on using avconv via cmd

jrg
or does it say you aren't an admin either?

it doesn't say i am not admin but i can;t login
it asks for correct username

jrg

ok.
same difference

heh only for admins i see

i don't even have access. :P
