1:04 AM
Hi! Is there someone who could help me with a problem with fancyhdr and listings?

1:28 AM
@PattaFeuFeu As those of us who frequent IRC channels would say: Ask the question; don't ask to ask the question.

@Gnintendo I wasn‘t even sure it there's anybody in here since this is my first time using the chat. Thanks for the advice, though :)

@PattaFeuFeu You will often find people will answer your question even if nobody was on at the time: you will be notified of their answer the next time you return to the site.

@Gnintendo Slowly, I’m getting it. Thusly, I will post my question then in the following …
What do I have to change to have the end of the listings-line and the caption of listings to be on par with the end of the text block (\textwidth, I guess)?
For the caption I used \DeclareCaptionFormat{listing}{\colorbox{Gray}{\parbox{\textwidth}{\hspace{15pt}‌#1#2#3}}} but somehow {0.985\textwidth} comes closer to the actual textwidth than just {\textwidth}

2:30 AM
@PattaFeuFeu Just catching the end of this conversation but \colorbox is like \fboz and includes some padding (\fboxsep) so you have a width of \textwidth+2\fboxsep in the above

my teacher wants me to use Times New Roman or a "similar font" for my paper
Do you think EB Garamond is too much of a deviation? I was thinking something like Linux Libertine O would be a good fit
I'm not a big fan of transitional fonts

@Gnintendo It depends on the teacher. Some people use "times" to mean "serif" and "helvetica" or "arial" to mean sans serif, so any serif font would do, some people don't use it in that sense and some students ignore their teachers presentational hints but get away with it because of the technical brilliance of the content. It all depends.....

Are you implying I should ignore my teacher's presentational hints?

@Gnintendo I couldn't possibly give advice :-)

>.<

2:36 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ah, good to know. How do I calculate the exact width of the text for the box, then? Or is there an option to exclude the padding?

@PattaFeuFeu well you could \setlength\fboxsep{0pt} but then there is no padding or you can \usepackage{calc} and use \parbox{\textwidth-2*\fboxsep} (note it is much easier to discuss code in a question/answer on site where code formatting is better, also the same question is already answered there (somewhere:-) but it's 2:30 in the morning, time for bed I think...

3:31 AM
@DavidCarlisle I'm more annoyed by my professor's double spacing requirement
The margin requirement is just superfluous
and I can get over the font one
the double spacing requirement just grinds my gears

biblatex is being a bitch after tex live update (it initially failed for bibtex and I had to reinstall it)

Arg, need doxygen for a C project of mine which under Ubuntu also installs doxygen-latex which installs Ubuntu's TeXLive ... 600+ MB.
Afterwards I have to enable the real TeX binaries again ....

@MartinScharrer Uh-oh. :(
I'm a fan of doxygen. :)

@PauloCereda It's nice, but I'm not sure how useful LaTeX output is.
HTML is much better in this case.

@MartinScharrer Now that you mentioned it, I think the LaTeX output is very messy. The other formats, specially HTML, are more consistent.

@PauloCereda Automatic generated LaTeX, ...

@MartinScharrer :P
One thing that I like from doxygen is the graph generation via GraphViz. :)

9:01 AM
@PauloCereda Yes, that's cool.

9:27 AM
That awkward moment when you actually know the name of the song playing in the new iPad mini commercial: youtube.com/watch?v=vM9U70HgLsQ

2 hours later…
11:05 AM
Oh no, I'm out of Pringles!

@PauloCereda You have more than 8 hours to get them.

@egreg I hope I can find them, or I'll have to go with Ruffles.

@PauloCereda Hmm, dangerous. :)

@egreg Indeed. :)

New versions of Biblatex and Biber, today.

11:15 AM
@egreg Yay! Already on CTAN?
I need to register on another Usenet provider. :(

@PauloCereda Already in TeX Live!

@egreg Oh my! :)

Plus support for SourceSansPro and SourceCodePro both in OpenType and Type1 fonts.

@egreg Yay! :)

11:35 AM
@egreg You're welcome ;)

@Silex Good job!

\usepackage{cookie}
"Arrivederci, frog" = mind blown. :P

@egreg Thanks!

@Silex Next step is providing them also in T2x and T3 encodings. :)

@egreg :O

Great, Bad Luck Brian strikes again: reached checkpoint, last life. D'oh.

1:21 PM
@JosephWright: can I send you an email? :)

@PauloCereda Er, yes

1:39 PM
@JosephWright Sent! :) Sorry for the delay, I was playing Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii. :)

2:28 PM
@PeterGrill I've added a font example to the answer. Please rollback if you are not happy with it. I hope you don't mind :)

2:49 PM
@percusse your emacs comment reminded me of this from 1998:-)

@DavidCarlisle Tabs are evil?

Buffers! <3

@Silex yes they are (although it was the emacs comment rather than the tabs comment that I was referring to just now)

@Silex Florent Chervet raised an issue in comp.text.tex about sourcecodepro-type1.sty. I believe he's right: the \RequirePackage[T1,LY1]{fontenc} line should have the encodings reversed.

@Silex Note this is "tab" as in ascii character 9, not the newfangled use of the word to mean buffer as @PauloCereda just hinted.

2:55 PM
@egreg That's correct, I'll fix it. Thanks!
Same thing in the sourcesanspro equivalent btw

@DavidCarlisle LOL

@DavidCarlisle I gathered - still not entirely sure how tabs can be evil though.

@PauloCereda I'm sure you'll be glad to know I'm trying out a new browser (firefox nightly WG9s) like nightly but less stable:( (It's got tabs though:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh my! Which version?

@Silex tabs are bad because they make your code look like it's indented but teh amount of indentation depends on teh system (and by default in verbatim mode the alignment is all wrong as they are treated like spaces)

2:59 PM
Morning

@PauloCereda WG9s it's a nightly build but including some code that isn't on the main branch (as far as I can work out basically any experimental code from any branch can get pulled in:-) I'm testing some mathml stuff.
@Canageek afternoon

@DavidCarlisle :set tabstop=128
@DavidCarlisle Cool! :)
@Canageek 'ello! :)

@PauloCereda is that a new latex verbatim setting. Don't recognise it, it must be tikz or something

@DavidCarlisle If I tell you the editor, you will never talk to me. :)

@PauloCereda That's not an editor

3:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle It's a command you run in it. :)
see the : in the beginning of the command. Spooky. :)

@PauloCereda no I mean the application that has : in its commands isn't an editor (there is only one editor)

@DavidCarlisle aaah! :)
@David: Does Heiko use emacs? :)

@PauloCereda VIM USER!

@PauloCereda I have no idea, I assume so.

@Canageek Oh no, I've been spotted! :)
@DavidCarlisle egreg and you are emacs users. :)

3:10 PM
oops back again (on a normal nightly, other one crashed again:-)

3:28 PM
@PauloCereda +1

4:24 PM
@PeterGrill It was a wrong comment so scratch that. :)
It's just a reuse of the same path. First it clips so anything after that would be clipped including the next postaction. But when the draw action kicks in due to the previous clip, half of the line width is also clipped so I double the line width.
So it's not a trick but rather an abuse :)
@DavidCarlisle Hahaha, I'm 15 years late to appreciate your wisdom apparently.
@PeterGrill I better post this under the question too. It looks awkward with unanswered comment.

I finally found an epic song to be arara's official debut on CTAN!

@PauloCereda What is it, oh tell oh tell... /me dances around with a fluffy dress

@PauloCereda I'm listening to Beethoven's Mondschein Sonate. Is it?

@percusse Beware of the addiction! :)
@egreg Hmm close. :P
@percusse: Just replace the wacky chorus by "Just run arara, just run arara": youtube.com/watch?v=dqgtsai2aKY

BEETle Juice?

4:34 PM
@percusse Banana boat song! :P

@PauloCereda heheheh

da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron! Dude, this chorus is addictive.

user19161
La ran la le ra, la ran la la!

@PauloCereda I'm trying to stop to listen to one of the Pain of Salvation albums ( The perfect element ). It might not be your cup of tea but it's great for me. I've discarded that band quite some time ago based on the other ones but that one and Remedy Lanes have become indispensable for me. I can recommend the latter to you too.

@JasperLoy: Hi!

4:40 PM
@percusse OMG I have that album! It's fantastic!

@PauloCereda How stupid am I to underestimate your music knowledge? my apologies :)

@percusse Oh please, don't say such thing. :) I'm very eclectic. I once listened to Rammstein. :P

@PauloCereda /me googles eclectic again for the google'th time

@percusse <3

I just knew Herbert's age. :-)

4:52 PM
@GarbageCollector Back to Latin letters I see.

@percusse ooh a letter I can find in my keyboard!
:)

@PauloCereda Indeed. Raphink is also off the ping radar.

@percusse Indeed.

@percusse Yes. I just changed it. Actually I wanted to change to Casper Joy. But it will trigger the world war 3.
@PauloCereda In chat room, it has no effect.

@GarbageCollector Your subtle interaction with him is certainly an interesting one.

4:56 PM
@percusse :-)

@PauloCereda This needs an Abandon ship!! button

Q: Bifurcating a PDF: choosing a "Plan B" during a talk

Jorge CamposI think this is a greenhorn's question, but anyway. It is sometimes difficult to measure time for a talk, according to unknown places and audiences By this and other reasons I'd like to subtly launch a "Plan B" during my talk. Specifically Question: Is it possible to generate a PDF that all...

@percusse LOL those smoke bombs are also useful. :)
@GarbageCollector Still...
@percusse: We could also trigger the OMG IT'S A LION GET IN THE CAR technique. :)

@PauloCereda Look a bird.... a bullet.... an aeroplane .... an arara

@percusse LOL
speaking of birds and planes...

hehehehe

5:03 PM
@percusse There's a toucan solo! :P

@Silex Are you interested in adding “yourself” to Who are the package maintainers here? It’s not a must, e. g. Ulrike Fischer’s packages aren’t listed, cf. with ctan.org/author/id/fischer-u

Is there a relationship between Bobby Fischer and Ulrike Fischer? They seems to like chess.

Oops, I was partly wrong. How could I overlook this?
@GarbageCollector I guess not. Bobby Fischer was US-American (but obviously with German-speaking ancestors), Ulrike is German. Fischer is a common name, original a profession, in English – surprise, surprise – it would be Fisher.

@Speravir OK. Thanks. Very informative!

Argh, red lines in MATLAB. My two hours into nothing. See you later guys.

5:27 PM
Aha, partly blind since 10th of August: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/revisions/2484/11
@GarbageCollector BTW I like your new old name better, because most people in the world can’t add the attribution info in a comfortable way, if you use not latin characters (at least in first position such a latin one is necessary IMHO).

@Speravir OK. The previous one was only for a test.

I know you love playing with your user name. ;-)

@Speravir Jasper Loy likes playing with his gravatar. :-)

@GarbageCollector Yes, he does, but you’ve changed it also some times. The finger art was very nice! (I wrote it in some comment to you, you were the Forgiver, I think.) Weell, your recent avatar fits perfectly your actual name. ;-)

@Speravir You have a very detailed attention. :-) You should be a mathematician like Cauchy. :-)

5:42 PM
@doncherry Deleted; it was a pretty bad ad anyway.

@GarbageCollector But I’m not. How is Cauchy?

Baron Augustin-Louis Cauchy () (21 August 1789 – 23 May 1857) was a French mathematician who was an early pioneer of analysis. He started the project of formulating and proving the theorems of infinitesimal calculus in a rigorous manner, rejecting the heuristic principle of the generality of algebra exploited by earlier authors. He defined continuity in terms of infinitesimals and gave several important theorems in complex analysis and initiated the study of permutation groups in abstract algebra. A profound mathematician, Cauchy exercised a great influence over his contemporaries and suc...

@GarbageCollector Cauchy? The one who lost Galois's memoir? Great mathematician, yes; detailed attention , no. :)

@egreg I don't know such a story. :-)
@egreg But I think he is the pioneer who defined infinitesimal idea in much more detailed.

Ah, thanks.
_Have to deal with other things._

5:52 PM
@GarbageCollector Galois sent a couple of memoirs to Cauchy, who didn't present them at the Académie. It's not clear why; somebody says that he didn't understand them and put them away; others say that he recommended to Galois to rewrite them. At any rate they were never presented to the Académie des Sciences during Galois's life. It should be acknowledged, however, that Galois had a terrible style of writing.
@GarbageCollector Weierstraß built on Cauchy's ideas for giving a sound foundation to analysis. Cauchy was also the creator of the theory of complex analytic functions.

@egreg Who killed Galois?

@GarbageCollector It's not known. Surely he was killed in a duel.

Q: Am I using textcomp correctly?

CanageekIn a previous question of mine I was told to use the textcomp package if I wanted Old Style Numbers with tgtermes. I wanted to know if there were options I could use with it, so I went to it's ctan page, which has the following note: The package supports the Text Companion fonts, which provid...

@Canageek Why should \usepackage{textcomp} be wrong?

@egreg I don't understand why Galois who has an academic background did a duel that sounds to be brainless activity. :-)

6:02 PM
The command to use for old style digits is \oldstylenums. But don't use them with Times (remember Monna Lisa with headphones). :)

@egreg Because it isn't a package

@GarbageCollector He didn't have any academic background.
@Canageek Really? I was convinced of the contrary. ;-)

@egreg That is what the quote from CTAN says.

@Canageek texdoc textcomp works for me (weel it just gives same as texdoc encguide) but that's the documentation you want O think

We lost two young masters: Galois and Abel (from tuberculosis, I guess).

6:03 PM
@egreg I did not know that.

@Canageek yes it is a package?

@Canageek I don't see where.

Riemann died because of TBC. It sounds weird. How did he control the hygiene?

@DavidCarlisle @egreg "Note that the package has been adopted as part of the LaTeX distribution; the reference here is to the original package, which is now little used (if at all). "

@PauloCereda Abel caught tubercolosis in Paris.

6:05 PM
@Canageek yes there are two packages of that name, the one you get with latex and the original one (which is not distributed normally) that came with the ec fonts. that ctan reference is to get the original one if yiouneed it for some reason

@DavidCarlisle Ahhh, ok. So is there documentation for the options provided by Textcomp? Texdoc textcomp makes my head hurt, as it seems to be about fonts in general.

How did Simon Laplace get an idea to define an integral $$\int_0^\infty f(t) e^{-st}\textrm{d}t$$ that is in fact very useful?

@Canageek feel the source luke grep DeclareOption kpsewhich textcomp.sty
\DeclareOption{full}{\DeclareEncodingSubset{TS1}{?}{0}}
\DeclareOption{almostfull}{\DeclareEncodingSubset{TS1}{?}{1}}
\DeclareOption{euro}{\DeclareEncodingSubset{TS1}{?}{4}}
\DeclareOption{safe}{\DeclareEncodingSubset{TS1}{?}{5}}
\DeclareOption{force}{\tc@forcedtrue}
\DeclareOption{warn}{\gdef\tc@errorwarn#1#2#3{\PackageWarning{#1}{#2}}}

@egreg Indeed. Speaking of Galois, I read somewhere that he didn't die during the duel, but it was severely wounded. When in his deathbed, his youngest brother (Alfred, I guess) started to cry compulsively. Then Galois said, "Do not cry, I need all my courage to die at the age of 20". :(

@Canageek which means basically that you (nor anyone else) need care about the options

6:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle @.@ Ok then, I don't see the thing I want. Thanks.

@PauloCereda Yes, that's true. :(

Do you know who is the first mathematician defining the scalar product?

@egreg :(

@DavidCarlisle I forgot that LaTeX was a collection of packages for a bit.
@egreg I'm getting mixed answers of if textcomp manufactures fake old style numberals, or uses ones that exist inside of Times that aren't normally accessible.

@GarbageCollector I don't know; but I'd go with Cayley or Sylvester on the math side, Gibbs on the physics side

6:16 PM
@egreg OK. Thanks.

@egreg: My Pringles supply is safe now. :)

@PauloCereda Just in time

@PauloCereda Can we not talk about brothers dying young right now? Please?

@Canageek I'm deeply sorry, it was not my intention. :(

@Canageek Why? Are you timid?

6:17 PM
@GarbageCollector My younger brother has cancer
@PauloCereda No worries; I feel bad for stopping your discussion as it is a nice quote.

@Canageek Oh. Sorry. :-(

@GarbageCollector No worries, you couldn't know.

@Canageek the textcomp package does essentially nothing it just accesses teh TS1 encoded fonts that should be there. the main reason that it has options is that many fonts were not available in full TS1 coverage and could only supply subsets even when encoded, so by decalring the subsets at the latex side you get errors earlier rather than crashing the printer

@DavidCarlisle: how many emacs sessions can you run inside emacs? :)

@DavidCarlisle Ah, ok. So the comment I saw saying it made fake oldstyle numbers was just incorrect. Got it.

6:20 PM
@PauloCereda as many as you want, how many do you want? Im not sure I've ever nested teh calls eg emacs in emacs in emacs, but you can certainly run any noumber of emacs in different terminal buffers

@DavidCarlisle ooh!

@egreg My problem with that is that I'm sure I've seen books that used Times with old style numbers, just ones that were typeset before electronic type. Are you sure the cold metal versions didn't have old style numerals as an option?

@Canageek well the font might just be a virtual font (or postscript type 3 font) that cobbles together glyphs from various sources so in that sense it might be fake, but TeX knows nothing about that, it uses the font as decared.

@Canageek I saw pages of "The Times" of the period when the new typeface had just been adopted. The font was born for hot metal (I think they used Monotype) and there was no "old style numeral": at the time they were considered old fashioned. Linotype made their own Times variety (they are slightly different).

@egreg You were alive in 1931?

6:26 PM
@Canageek Of course not. I'm older than David, but not so much. :)

@egreg Times New Roman was created in 1931 and released commercially in 1932

@Canageek don't believe him, he's much older than me.

@Canageek You can see the pages yourself by going to the Times' electronic archives

@egreg The fact that the paper used lining figures doesn't mean the font wasn't cast with both

@Canageek There was no place in the Monotype machine for oldstyle digits; one had to use a different matrix and this wasn't good for newspaper production.

6:36 PM
@egreg Times New Roman was made by Linotype though, then licensed to Monotype.
@egreg Also the difference between Times New Roman and the Mona Lisa is that one is actually good, and the other is an annoying typeface I use because it is small, and if I use Venturis ADF my TA complains.
@DavidCarlisle Are there other packages that are part of LaTeX, but still have to be loaded manually?

It is just a test, $$\Huge \text{@Canageek}$$ do you get notified?

@GarbageCollector Yes

@Canageek OK. Thanks.

But it doesn't highlight @Canageek in the text, the way it normally does. It still pops up the (1) and makes the sound though.

@Canageek Did you install ChatJax ?

6:49 PM
@GarbageCollector Nope

@Canageek So the TeX code did not rendered in your browser. I am interested how it behaves when the TeX code is rendered by ChatJax, do the recipient still get notified?

@GarbageCollector You'll have to ask someone else. For me I'm normally asking questions about how to get code to work, so seeing it rendered would be a pain.

@Canageek OK. I ask this in the Math.SeX chat room.

@GarbageCollector Good idea, I was about to suggest that

Is anybody else having trouble with the latest biblatex update in tex live?

7:02 PM
Does anyone here have a moment to help me figure out how to typeset a Greek word?
Specifically the word techne

@Canageek τέχνη?

@Gnintendo Would that be how it is? Or is just saying "techne" acceptable? So I have to denote that I'm using a Greek word in any way?
@Gnintendo I haven't tried yet. I'll wait until I have this essay done so I don't screw up my installation.

@Canageek Is your question whether or not you should use the roman transliteration?

@Gnintendo Yes, and if I have to do anything special to it, like italics or quotes or such.

@Canageek I believe babel has some relevant documentation for typesetting words and/or sections in other languages; you might find it beneficial to look through its documentation

7:26 PM
@Gnintendo What name is it under? CTAN and texdoc don't have anything if I just put in bable
oh, babel not bable

@Gnintendo I'll just leave it as is, the easiest solution and we use it as a term all the time in class.

@Canageek babel has the command \textgreek which takes one argument of Greek text
it will then typeset it in proper Greek for you
@Canageek You can also do \selectlanguage{Greek}{texthere}

@Gnintendo It has to call back to Computer Modern then, and you can't tell what word I'm trying to say easily, so I'll go with the Latin version
Thanks anyway

all right
I don't really know the official typesetting rules for which you should use, though :s
It probably depends on the context, mostly

7:51 PM
OK, either the bier update or the biblatex update definitely broke something

@Canageek there are loads of packages in the core required distribution, longtable, array, graphics, ... even if you restrict to latex/base there are quite a few:
alltt.sty exscale.sty fontenc.sty leqno.sty openbib.sty slides.sty
article.sty fix-cm.sty graphpap.sty letter.sty proc.sty syntonly.sty
bezier.sty fixltx2e.sty ifthen.sty makeidx.sty report.sty t1enc.sty
book.sty flafter.sty inputenc.sty newlfont.sty shortvrb.sty textcomp.sty
doc.sty fleqn.sty latexsym.sty oldlfont.sty showidx.sty tracefnt.sty

@DavidCarlisle Interesting.

@Gnintendo I'm not having trouble with it.

headscratch

@Gnintendo be careful that the questions you ask are related to the questions to which you want the answer.

7:56 PM
hmm

@Gnintendo (hint: I haven't updated texlive recently, and I haven't used biblatex)

eyeroll
at least I've narrowed it down to biber exiting with errors on this file...I just don't know why now

@Gnintendo Did you clean all temp files?

yes
OK so
I need to figure out why biber is exiting
:s
god damn it

@Gnintendo Have you made sure nothing in your installation is open? I had installs fail because the manual was open.

8:04 PM
let me check
I wish I could more easily figure out why biber exits
:s
aha, got it.
Note to self: when moving directories for a project, don't forget to copy the .bib file.

@Gnintendo Hah, that would do it. I'm suprised there wasn't an error message in the log file.

nope
the first pdftex ran fine, biber just exits, and the following pdftex runs just complain that biber didn't work

8:20 PM
That sucks.

@Gnintendo Error message, please.

@PauloCereda The issue is already resolved; we were just discussing the difficulty of narrowing down the issue.

@Gnintendo Oh my bad. I thought you were still having problems. :)

@PauloCereda Nope, all good now

@Gnintendo Cool! :)

8:25 PM
./meaning.tex:62: Package hyperref Warning: Token not allowed in a PDF string :(hyperref) removing \sigma' on input line 62.` I hate pdf bookmarks. I was hoping setting unicode to true would allow me to include a sigma :s

@Gnintendo I'd be more glad for an automatic replacement (\sigma -> sigma)

8:43 PM
I recently learned two things: Some user scripts, also for chat, github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts and there exists a chat sandbox: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1/sandbox

Oh I forgot, where I got it: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/83289/182952

@PauloCereda I wonder if my machine is infected, I found a strange file on it

yay, I revised the first thing I ever wrote in LaTeX: gabmedia.org/meaning.pdf
I only wrote that so I could learn more about LaTeX; I just updated it by incorporating everything I've learned since I've written it (for the most part)

@DavidCarlisle And what's wrong? You would like to have j instead of ( and x instead of ) ?

@tohecz I thought about correcting it to that style, but that would be silly...

9:03 PM
Shouldn't the meeting start now? Well, I work in France, so 15 minutes delay is no surprise, but still...
Just for the records: current number of unanswered questions is 581. What is our today's goal?

Because of the big success “Answer the Unanswered” is moved the a new location?

@Speravir I think that DST people will come in 1 hour ;)

@tohecz You may be right. We will see.

9:22 PM
egreg and paulo watching football I think:-)

@DavidCarlisle 2/4 registered participants ... That's desertion!!!

Q: Sourcecode on the left, Nassi–Shneiderman on the right (float?)

PattaFeuFeuI’d like to place a Nassi-Schneiderman diagram into my LaTeX document but also to have the source code for the shown algorithm beside it. Drawing the diagram worked just fine using the StrukTeXpackage, showing the source code isn’t a problem either. The problem is: I can’t think of a way to have...

Q: Issue with .sty file

Hasan FeritI have a code that uses a given .sty file. However it gives error. I am using TeXStudio. First when I try to compile it it gives .sty file couldn't found error. Then I assign the .sty file as a master file. This time it gives log file couldn't found error. Same things happen in TeXmaker also.

Q: Difference between (split, align) and (gather, aligned)?

fg nuHere is an MWE which shows that they seem to do the same thing. Is there any reason to prefer one over the other for typesetting groups of equations? Q: Where is Texfont in TeXlive 2012?
