More importantly, why give any candy to children? Just go buy it all on Nov 1 for crazy discounts.

@Wipqozn Wow. It blows my mind that the answer got 15 upvotes

@OrigamiRobot I'm not the one who bought the candy, and insists handing it out. That's my father. In fact he'll be afk on Halloween and I only plan on giving kids the candy I don't like.

@OrigamiRobot I like the way you think. Discounted candy! woo!

@Wipqozn Candy corn and Necco wafers?

2:03 PM
@OrigamiRobot Chocolate bars.
We're giving our chips and chocolate bars. I only plan to hand out chips.

@Wipqozn Who doesn't like chocolate?

@OrigamiRobot If you like to save even more money, run around in the early morning on 1st November and gather all the candy which the kids dropped off the streets.

@MartinSojka Or just steal some kids bag of candy.

@MartinSojka That's not candy. That's poop and it's there all year round.

user2334
What is this, Communist Russia? No kid drops candy on the streets

2:05 PM
Plus the candy will be more delicious since it's covered in the tears of children.
@MarkTrapp The street drops kids on the candy?

@desaivv Turtle tears are a very rich fuel source.

The tears of turtle children could keep me running for eternity.

@OrigamiRobot Understandable.

Android Chrome is strange
When you load a page, it requests apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png and apple-touch-icon.png
However, if you actually define one in <head>, it doesn't attempt to download it.

Anyways, like I was saying, that Fae is a real bi- HEY! HOW'S IT GOING FAE?

Well, shit

@Wipqozn I think this message works as is.

For some reason the wagons in the dwarven caravan that just showed up thought they could cross the water to get into my fortress

@SaintWacko They must be the short caravans.

instead they got sucked down and broken up in the waterfall intake

Q: Games are playing but very slow response and poor graphics

user101509The graphics memory of my notebook is 2.5 GB , 1 GB dedicated memory. After installing Ubuntu 12.04, I activated the graphics card from Applications->additional drivers. @FAE Also, closure is really good.
Quite happy I picked it up.

2:42 PM
@Wipqozn I'm glad you're enjoying!

Have you ever played The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom?
If you like Closure, you'll probably like that too.

I have not.
What platform?

I'd also suggest Braid and Limbo, but I'd like to think you've already played those.

FAE
I've heard of it but I don't know anything about it. And yes to those 2.

@FAE It's on a few, but you can buy it on Steam for $5

@TimStone I set a negative right margin equal to the total outer width of the element (minus 1) anyway but that doesn't seem to work. I may just have to try for an overflow-x trick and hope for the best. Thanks for having a look

Q: Why can't I craft anything with items from cheats?

victoriahI wanted to do some testing with the Nether so I made a fresh world on Survival, with cheats enabled. I used the following command to give myself 64 diamonds: /give [me] 264 64 264 But for some reason I can't craft with them: I tried this on a couple different worlds and I have the same ...

Q: Equivalent to bwchart for Starcraft 2

GlideIs there equivalent(s) to bwchart for Starcraft 2 ? BWChart allowed to analyze replays for Starcraft 1 & Broodward by showing very useful statistics.

@Lazers Is this not ?
Also, meeting over! I have much complicated stuff to complete!

@fbueckert I will help! Analyzing Hit it with a hammer. TASK COMPLETE

@OrigamiRobot And this is why we don't let robots do our jobs.
They're terrible at them.

@fbueckert I dunno. if you rephrased the question ever so slightly, it'd be okay, right? "How do I analyze a replay in SC2 and show useful statistics?" is a pretty okay question, yeah?

@agent86 Hm. Didn't think of that. I'd agree with that re-wording.

3:09 PM
In cases like that, I tend to let it go, even without the re-wording, they're not asking for anything subjective, just a solution to their stated problem.

@agent86 The way they word it, however, turns it into a popularity contest.
Which is why we don't do recommendations; they don't fit into the whole Q&A format.

@Ktash Hmm, interesting. I did 'marginRight': (-1*(document.body.scrollWidth-322)/2) and it seems to work in IE9-IE7 mode (although there's a one pixel discrepency somewhere). But anyway, basically the layout engine is setting aside enough space for the element before shifting it to the left, so you get stuck with that extra space unless you trick it into thinking it didn't need it.

@fbueckert when it comes to things like this, though, there's very little subjectivity. and -rec is not immediately bad (and I think its been said before that -rec is not off-topic due to it being a recommendation per se)

@agent86 How not? He's not even detailing which statistics he's looking for. People are going to define useful very differently, depending on what they're currently focusing on.
And what we're getting is, "Here's a program. See the program? I want one like this for X. Does it exist?"
If it got re-worded to provide context, "Brood War has a program called bwchart. It provided lots of useful statistics, such as X, Y, and Z. How can I find these same statistics for Starcraft 2?", we could get a definitive answer.

@fbueckert grace has a couple of long answers on this, and the problem isn't that there are potentially multiple correct answers, the problem is that each answer cannot stand on it's own.
in this case, if someone suggests a program that provides a similar benefit, that's an answer that stands alone, and it answers the question.
if the intent is to gather many answers, and the real "answer" to the question is the collection of all answers on it, that's bad

3:14 PM
Looks like a user was able to answer the question without our interference.

@agent86 Hmm. I wouldn't mind a link to those for further reading.

user2334
The problem is there is no correctness criteria. List a website, wait for upvotes from people who also like that website. Can be closed for pretty much any reason but exact duplicate

@agent86 I went ahead and applied your edit anyway

@badp :P

3:17 PM
@MarkTrapp I hate to say it, but I actually agree with you for once. :P

and you are going to like it

@badp oh yeah I like it

good

Haha, my militia commander is so confident in her squad that she took a nap in the arena

user2334
@badp you didn't change the question at all. It's still asking for a site like bwcharts, and the accepted answer is one random website that happens to apparently be like bwcharts. The guy accepted it like 30 seconds after it was posted. Surely, there is no correctness criteria, the guy just wanted a new site to look at

user2334

ImBoredTellMeASiteToGoTo.SE

@MarkTrapp Well, it's now more of a "how to solve this problem" than a "give me an X to solve this problem"
although, yeah, I only changed the title because I have never played Starcraft anyway

user2334
@badp No it isn't. You've done nothing to make that, nevermind the accepted answer now prevents it from ever being that

user2334
If you want to ask that question yourself, ask a new question. There is no point in saving this question now

Why would I ask a question I don't care about for a game I don't have

user2334
Why would you change the title of a question that doesn't ask for that at all either? I dunno, you work in mysterious ways sometimes

12 mins ago, by agent86
@fbueckert I dunno. if you rephrased the question ever so slightly, it'd be okay, right? "How do I analyze a replay in SC2 and show useful statistics?" is a pretty okay question, yeah?
fbueckert saw a problem. agent suggested a solution. fbueckert agreed it was an okay solution. agent said there then there was no problem to begin with and fbueckert conceded
I applied the solution anyway

user2334
Edits are meant to clarify a question. If you're attempting to completely re-write a question, you're doing it wrong. Close it, comment, and let the person decide if they want to ask a different question

is the whole point of bwchart not analyze a replay of a SC2-like game and show a useful statistic?
(↑ real, non-rhetoric question)

@badp Nowhere did I say that just a straight up title change would fix it.
The body text needs to be fixed, too, because it's the crux of the problem.

@fbueckert Well, "no change at all" also is not a fix

I dunno, from my perspective it's a pretty objective question. It's like one of those SAT analogy problems. A is to B as C is to ? - Starcraft:ThisTool::Starcraft2:?. On SO, I might ask "How do I do a C-style strcmp in python?" - there might be better or more popular ways of doing it, and I could go into detail about what strcmp does in C, but the goal state is fairly clear.

3:24 PM
I'm sorry if I didn't singlehandledly fix the question with a single act of divine intervention and instead went for an incremental improvement

@badp I concur; but is it not up to the asker to change his question? I mean, he just asked it, so we should be guiding him on how to fix it to work within Arqade, not changing the intent of his question.

@fbueckert I'm just wondering if it does change the intent of his question

user2334
You're all ignoring the fact that the question asker is not asking for, and did not want what you're attempting to re-interpret his question to be. He wanted a site to look at that was like another. As soon as someone provided a site, any site, nevermind whether it was actually the best one or the one that answers the new title or whatever, he accepted it within seconds

user2334
There is no diamond in the rough here, no greater question to make this into

well apparently he gave it three minutes fourteen seconds
at any rate, questions on the site are more than just the asker's property and are supposed to serve a greater purpose than help the asker alone
questions that help the asker alone and can't be fixed is what "too localized" is about

user2334
3:29 PM
Yes, exactly: that's why this question should be closed. We're not running out of question IDs. If someone wants to ask a more generalized question about analyzing replays, they're more than welcome to do that

@MarkTrapp You arent very in character for Halloween

@MarkTrapp So we should just get rid of the reopen button.
I mean, why reopen when you can close, delete and reask?
is recalled of the guy who did just that the day after yesterday and got his second and third question closed as a dupe and deleted straight away. By me. That's probably 6,000 milliHitlers.

user2334
@badp By that logic, why have a close button or an ask a question button? Just find a bad question on the site and rewrite it to be a completely different question that you want to ask instead

There is no sense in turning a closable question into a completely different acceptable question. The original asker gets undeserved rep (and therefore privileges) and learns nothing.
2

@OrigamiRobot Now THAT, I agree with.

3:32 PM
@MarkTrapp I didn't change it to "How do I paint my hat purple in Team Fortress 2"

user2334
@OrigamiRobot Plus you have an accepted answer that does not answer the question

@OrigamiRobot Most new users are passer-bys who don't give a rat's ass about the site and don't care about learning to fish
Do we just keep the broken window and the closed question? Do we annoy people until they jump through the hoop? Do we give him the fish and then teach him to fish if he becomes a returning visitor?

Q: Starcraft 2 - Zerg how to counter thors/hellions

GlideBeing zerg, apparently the official counter against Thors/Hellions blue flame is zerglings/roachs/infestors, isn't it ? (Not mentioning broolords at end game of course). This requires to: take the focus with roachs with a concave if possible send the zerglings good fungals ultimately mind cont...

I don't have a strategy; I felt like helping the dude out. Apologies

3:35 PM
We could just interpret the question to be a mod-rec and be automatically and irremediably off-topic for all I really am concerned

user2334
There's nothing to do redeem however you want to classify it. The guy got what he was looking for, this is the best the question will ever get. So now we are the leading experts in one site that happens to be like another

oi

@MarkTrapp I guess we'll have to agree to disagree there then. The guy most likely doesn't want a replacement for a tool that does X if he doesn't want to do X to begin with
and if this guy doesn't care to do X, most people who want that tool's replacement will indeed want to do X.

user2334
@badp We don't have to guess or speculate: he wrote what he was looking for, and the accepted check box is already there. He wanted to know of a site like bwchart, and our expert answer is SC2 charts. So now everyone Googling for a site like bwchart (not the best site, or a general site about replays) will have this answer

@Mana What.

3:40 PM
@MarkTrapp Yeah, I thought the underlying problem is "Give me something like foo but that isn't foo" is off-topic/bad constructive here.

user2334
I should self-ask and answer a question asking for a site like WoWWiki. Answer: Wowpedia. Rep points please

and thus begun the successful operation of Mark Trapp's Arqade Gold Farming Inc.

Protip: People give you more rep when you don't answer immediately, wait a few minutes. Somehow this disables the 'He's only in this for the rep' warning system.

"What's a site like rule34.paheal.net?" - "We all hope there's only one."

user2334
@GrayStoat Unless it's about DragonVale!

user2334
Oh god, I'm a genius. New question: "What's a site like SC2 charts?" Answer: "bwchart"

3:46 PM
ITG would have worked well with the self-answer system
I could ask you to identify a very obscure game, very poorly described, when I already know what it is

I wish there was a game based on rolling your eyes, I'd be racking up huge combos right about now

Yay! Back to 10k again.

So are we all agreed the question is meh, and should be closed with extreme prejudice?

user2334
@GrayStoat there's an SE site that did exactly that, and it caused some consternation, but I forget which: Judaism maybe? Similar parallels to Code Golf/Puzzles on SO, too, which caused endless drama until it got its own site

@MarkTrapp Proposal: CanYouGuessWhatItIs.SE

3:50 PM
@GrayStoat TwentyQuestions.SE

@badp You need an animated avatar

@fbueckert I'm not sure. On the one hand, I have no stakes in this fight; I'm not playing SC2. On the other hand, I can imagine the answer can be quite useful to some people, if attached to the right question.

@MartinSojka I agree with this. I say leave it alone.

@MartinSojka Read the chat history

user2334
@GrayStoat like it hasn't been proposed a dozen times already!

3:51 PM
@GrayStoat can't do that with gravatar

@fbueckert I did. The question is bad, the user likely won't come back to improve it, but the answer looks good to me.

@MartinSojka Is it really a question we want, though?

Whenever Community flags a post by a 1 rep user for low quality, we can do one of two things
leave a comment asking the guy to fix the spelling
fix it ourselves

Not playing SC2, I can't really comment on its usefulness, how localised it is, ... anyone here who does play the game cares to chime in?

3:53 PM
(or just outright delete the answer because, damn, we aren't running out of post id numbers!)
@MartinSojka I also don't play it, but I guess analyzing your replays to study your and your opponents seems like a great way to learn about the game in general
(I know that most of my TF2 replays are called 'wtf')

user2334
@badp Guess which one winds up guaranteeing an improvement in quality for extremely little effort, particularly when it's a user who will never come back?

@MarkTrapp fix it ourselves, obviously

user2334
And there's still a 4th option: ask for an unregistered user ban. Not just for SO anymore!

@MarkTrapp Oh, so you don't want any new users.

@MartinSojka It's not really about SC2; that's just the question. The basic premise of the question is described by @Mark as, "So now we are the leading experts in one site that happens to be like another".

3:55 PM
Anyway, back to playing popular Japanese(-inspired) ero games and looking for good questions to ask about them. :)

@MarkTrapp yeah, that's even more terrible. Congratulations

@GnomeSlice How many new users do we get that don't vomit out words that maybe make a sentence?

@fbueckert What?

user2334
@badp Deletion takes one click. Trying to tease out an answer that's almost certainly duplicated or about to be duplicated by an answer that doesn't fail from someone who clearly doesn't care is definitely more work than one click

@MarkTrapp So let someone who is willing to do the work do it, and quit complaining about it...

user2334
3:56 PM
@GnomeSlice Wrong. You just need to register beforehand. SO and Programmers both have unregistered user bans on asking questions: they haven't stopped getting new users

@GnomeSlice Think about it, dude. The vast majority of contributions we get from unregistered 1-rep users is absolute crap.
And it would have a side benefit of reducing the amount of spam we get, too.

@fbueckert What do you expect? We're a gaming community.
Gamers are dumb.

@MarkTrapp They have them because they can't physically do otherwise; it's a last ditch measure

We're a low volume site, compared to the traffic we get. We can easily handle the amount of crap we get, I see no reason to make it harder for new users to post here

@fbueckert That's not what the SE philosophy is; the SE philosophy is to put as little friction as possible when people want to contribute content - especially answering

user2334
3:59 PM
I'm not saying that we should have an unregistered user ban; just that it's another option on the table. My preference is pretty well-known as "delete obviously crap posts"

I would just like to point out that unregistered users on SO can't ask but can answer.
