12:40 AM
I will re-install the server once more, run the script again and then try to inspect the log and pinpoint what am I doing wrong. I will report if/when I have more info.
This is the error I am getting:

Q: Where/how should I discuss a rejected edit?

KoenWhere and how can I start a discussion on an edit I suggested that was rejected? Get in private/personal contact with the reviewer? It seems here on Meta is better, but if so: How to get the attention of the reviewer (e.g. is it possible to tag someone)? Follow this example for my title (naming t...

1 hour later…
1:55 AM
@lambda23 Your edits are just zzz
Please don't waste the time of reviewers.

In other words, don't stop editing, just do better edits.
Okay, seriously, do not edit for no reason.
I just rejected all but one of your edits.
And that one I had to improve.

Yes, Barely useful edits that is barely necessary.

good morning

2:13 AM
Hello folks. Can someone please tell me if the Rubbish Bin in Ubuntu 12.04 always appears to contain some files and that you can always empty an empty rubbish bin?

if you have files in the rubbish bin, it won't look empty

My rubbish bin has no files that I can see. :(

mine is empty because i empty it every morning at 7 am
try ls -a .local/share/Trash/

OK. I tried. It says . .. expunged file info

install tree and test again
tree .local/share/Trash/
.local/share/Trash/
├── expunged
├── files
└── info

3 directories, 0 files

2:22 AM
OK, I get 0 directories 0 files when I list files from expunged. And just . .. when I try and look into files and info using ls.

well, so you have nothing in trash then

@msPeachy hey

@KannappanSampath use ls -a

So, is this supposed to be a bug or status-by-design that I can empty an empty trash? (and also the accompanying can is misleading!) :(

my trash is empty. so i dont think it is a bug.

2:24 AM
Also: I just started using Ubuntu a day ago. So, please forgive me if I ask stupid questions.

no worries.

@jokerdino I get a long list of files.

there you go. that's why your trash is not empty

@KannappanSampath that's not supposed to happen, so you probably deleted hidden files.

@RolandTaylor Hmm, perhaps. I moved from Windows 7 and was loading all my files up here. So , I got rid of a plenty of .log and .aux files.
@RolandTaylor So, what's the penance? :)

2:30 AM
@KannappanSampath turn on hidden files with ctrl+h and you should see a bunch of files appear in trash

No, I didn't. :( Also, Properties pop-up says Contents: Nothing.
@jokerdino so, do I type: rm -a ?

hm.
you want to delete them for sure?
nautilus .local/share/Trash/ and see the hidden files

@jokerdino I am worried: My Desktop shows up there. A new file I created called Combinatorics shows up there. :(

:/
you just restore those files then.

2:40 AM
Puzzled about this! :(

i would be around for some more time.

@jokerdino Thank you then. Will you please tell me a way out of this. I also want to tell you that, I cut and paste the old files from a hard drive. Then, when I was about to remove the hard drive, it said, I have to delete to make space available in the disk. I went ahead. Is this supposed to be the culprit?

is the hard drive still connected?
you can try removing it and see if that makes any difference

@jokerdino I have removed it.

bah
check if the files exist outside of the trash

2:44 AM
@jokerdino those listed in ls -a you mean?

yeah

if they are also outside of trash, i don't think you would have any problem.

@jokerdino what do you mean?

you said some files you just created are in trash.
are they still where you created them?

2:47 AM
@jokerdino yes. puzzled more and more and more

i don't know what sort of a mess you have created.
you can use fdupes and see if they are really dupes.

:(
I am running fdupes on root.

nooo
don't run on root.
just run fdupes -r * on your home.

@jokerdino OK. Terminal was also going crazy.
@jokerdino Ok.

just take note of the files showing up.
if you can't scroll to the maximum, you can log the output using script if necessary.

2:54 AM
@jokerdino Yes, I could not! I seem to have a plenty of dupes. God!

ok, ctrl+C the process.
then script fdupes.log and try again.

@jokerdino Alright, it looks like, the ones I see on ls -a are not exactly dupes. But, I'd like to keep one copy of the file that fdupes has now identified to be dupe and delete the rest. So, is it possible?

delete them manually using file manager and shift+delete.

@jokerdino Oh, OK. I'll do it.

good luck

3:01 AM
As for the problem with trash, I'll see what is possible. But, is this supposed to hinder the computer in any way?

not really.
it's just files in your computer. how do you think that is harmful?

@jokerdino Thank you. Can I modify the log file as I do the deal?

like?
i am thinking there is a better way to handle using fdupes

@jokerdino delete that entry...after I delete the file

@KannappanSampath it's just logging whatever appears in your terminal. you would have to do it manually too. or if i can find the parameter in fdupes
cancel all the process and try fdupes -rd *

3:05 AM
@jokerdino Works like charm I tell you. :)
Thank you @jokerdino!
Awesome!

make sure you don't make another mess :)

@jokerdino Heh! Sure. You see, I am always worried if typing something will blow the compute screen and shatter the keyboard into pieces. I am a poor math major and cannot afford such a tragedy. :)

I am sure that won't happen. The maximum that can happen is you wipe your hard disk and you can't recover any data.
So, does it now solve your trash problem?

Morning everyone~

Morning
It's almost afternoon here actually.

3:13 AM
@Mochan Good Morning. :)
@jokerdino Not quite. I will keep looking. If I solve the issue, I'll report. :)

@KannappanSampath o/
@jokerdino Good afternoon, then. I'm making breakfast C:

@KannappanSampath Well, you can just remove flies from .local/share/Trash if you think they can be deleted.
@Mochan Hah, It's still quite a bit from noon.

@jokerdino OK. I'll see. It looks like there is only one copy though.

They might be outdated files then? fdupes checks if the md5sum matches.

Oh wait. I just realized it's 2:15 here and I'm not making breakfast but lunch. Lack of sleep -.-

3:16 AM
You live in the east AUS?

Yup

okay.

XD
Anything interesting going on?

Just seeing which of the cities you might be from.

I live about 1 hour from the major city in my state.

3:18 AM
OK, I get the point.

:P
I'm off to Nirn now. Just thought I'd drop in and see if there were any ongoing issues. Anyway, see you all later~

cya

(Does anyone know what I mean about Nirn? I hope not.)
o/

No

Bless the heavens -gay-
Bye~

3:21 AM
I have no idea what you are saying. I'll just nod.
Bye.

@jokerdino A small help: If I want to keep several files in a range. Say, 12 -- 23, how do I do so?
(instead of typing 12, 13, and so on?)

does 12-23 work?

Good morning
Lol, i too gave answers in comment

@jokerdino works. :)
Thank you!

@KannappanSampath i am glad it does.
ooh I have hit 13k!

3:26 AM
congrats on 13k!

thx

@jokerdino How nice. :)

it's just a nice number. just 2k more to go.
> I don't see the point of edits like these.
I loves Roland!
If everyone knows when to just stop disruptive behaviour, we would make a much better community.

Oh, that's great!

but honestly, edit rep whoring is just too annoying.
making insignificant edits and hoping it gets approved. shakes head

3:36 AM
i'm surprised at this

especially if the reviewer would have to improve the post most of the time

He should be tired of finding and editing such minor stuff

or he can just find them from review queue for low quality and first answers
i mean, he is even editing non answers for damn sake!

this is annoying too much!

this is after foss telling him not to make such lame edits.

3:41 AM
I've approved 57 suggestions and rejected 23! \o/

and at least once before today, someone told him not to do it.

foss told him yesterday

so he should have read it by now

I think so

and he'll persist on making those silly edits
i get it. i read them
lol you make me smile
i see

3:44 AM
I saw him in chat yesterday

i saw him today when I pang him. he apparently just ignored and continued his ways

you beat me on that answer

i what?
ok.
i just happen to see it

can 10k guys see other users flag stats?

no

3:52 AM
oh..i was thinking it was you
I remember, i was jrg

moderators can see :)
We used to be able to see flag-weight but they removed that.

@msPeachy @jokerdino @jrg @joshua what you guys think?: plus.google.com/b/105949855978008957419/105949855978008957419/…

@RolandTaylor why not me? :(

@OliveTwist lol

3:55 AM
@RolandTaylor +1'ed!

Because I didn't know if you would know what it is about

you should be the blender SE site's mod!
it hasn't come out yet.

Oh? I need to get crackin on it

I have several problems -- just in one day with ubuntu!
For one: sudo cannot resolve host.

@KannappanSampath You also get live support for free!
@KannappanSampath did you change the hostname or something?
9
Q: sudo: unable to resolve host (none)

Kit SundeI have this issue on AWS on some servers. Whenever I run sudo the terminal is stuck doing seemingly nothing, until it finally spits out this error message. My terminal looks like this: ubuntu@(none):~$ sudo true sudo: unable to resolve host (none) What can I do to solve it? Update: Solved! ...

@jokerdino Yes. True. Definitely.
@jokerdino Yup. I changed my computer's name.

appears

@KannappanSampath see the above question.

When I type cat etc/hostname, it says no such file or directory. oy vey!

4:13 AM
/etc/hostname

@KannappanSampath /etc/hostname

@AmithKK What is * for? =)

@AmithKK yo, don't confuse users

lol

@jokerdino So, I get my computer's name here.

4:14 AM
I forgot it was a shell command. Sorry @KannappanSampath @jokerdino

@AmithKK Heh. Please. Newb. Here. :)

@KannappanSampath edit it.
gksu gedit /etc/hostname
wait.
what do you get for hostname

@jokerdino The one I changed to. The New name appears.

please make sure you get the new name in /etc/hostname

Say Name1 was my old name and Name2 is the new one.
I get Name2 with /etc/hostname

4:16 AM
okay
what about /etc/hosts

@jokerdino Permission Denied. I am the admin though. :(

use sudo

as in sudo /etc/hosts ?

gksu gedit /etc/hosts

127.0.0.1	localhost
127.0.1.1	banana

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

4:21 AM
what do you get for hostname?

banana = Name1 :)

ah, change it to name2

@jokerdino Changed. Now, do I try sudo apt-get update?

Shouldn't hostname do that by default?

@KannappanSampath yes

4:22 AM
Bug report

@AmithKK SHUP

@RolandTaylor wow

@jokerdino Perfect! No Complaints! You're awesome!

And, I have banish404 installed.

@jokerdino Hmm. OK. :)

4:25 AM
@jokerdino que?

@msPeachy sombre?

But still when I update, I get a warning and an error:
W: Failed to fetch download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/dists/stable/non-free/…  404  Not Found [IP: 92.122.212.249 80]

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

why did you add skype repo? o.O

@jokerdino sombrio?

you should just enable canonical partner repo

@msPeachy whatever :P

@jokerdino I use skype... I installed it.

the link is dead

@KannappanSampath Just enable the partner repo and get skype from there

@jokerdino LOL
rep whoring??? wow!

4:27 AM
@msPeachy yes :D

@AmithKK I already have skype. But, perhaps, I added a wrong PPA or whatever. So, 404 not found error.

@jokerdino who's the rep who**?

@KannappanSampath i mean, install it from ubuntu repo rather than skype linux repo
@msPeachy Ask Roland

yo @RolandTaylor??

18
Q: How do I enable the "partner" repository?

Jorge CastroI keep seeing places refer to the "partner" repository as a place I can get software, how can I enable this repository? Please specify how to do this graphically and via command line.

4:29 AM
@msPeachy yesh?

hi msPeachy

I went afk for a minute there
@msPeachy no problema

@RolandTaylor who says I can't cheat?
@RolandTaylor ohh poor you
anyway, you posted with something like this: "was it something I said?"...what was that?

4:35 AM
OK. There are no partner repositories:
## This software is not part of Ubuntu, but is offered by third-party
## developers who want to ship their latest software.
deb extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main
deb-src extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main
deb download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian stable non-free

@AmithKK can you bicycle to the place where @kanappan is and provide live support? :D

So, perhaps do I comment out that skype repository?

@jokerdino I can do better :P

@KannappanSampath yeah

@jokerdino :)

4:36 AM
Arm the Teamviewer
:P

well, that works too :P

@jokerdino Hey. Sorry folks. I promise I won't ask stupid questions later on. A few more days until I get used to this whole thing, OK?

@KannappanSampath No problem :)
We're just kidding :D

@KannappanSampath it's not stupid. it's just that it is difficult to guide new users on things like this.
sorta tedious because new users are lost and we are just not sure how to proceed.

back again

4:38 AM
@jokerdino Oh, OK. :)

@msPeachy lol it was cause I came online and you went offline the same time :P

@AmithKK :)

so I was like "was it something I said?"

@KannappanSampath so, remove that skype repo from that file and add the partner repo

@RolandTaylor oh, it's always something you've said

4:39 AM
@KannappanSampath run cat /etc/apt/sources.list

@msPeachy :P
am I that bad?

@RolandTaylor lol, nope

I meant it in a good way

> for 50$ more you can get a Nexus 7

4:40 AM
It doesn't make sense for people to buy Apple products.

@RolandTaylor I think I mean, there's always something in what you say that....

but they do it anyway. i guess it is just people and their logic

@AmithKK done. I got the file on the terminal. :)

@msPeachy hehe

@KannappanSampath paste it here

4:41 AM
@jokerdino why doesn't it make sense?

@msPeachy I was being jovial, no worries

@msPeachy expensive stuff that doesn't work on linux :D

Is unity faster in 12.10 @jokerdino ?

@AmithKK that's a lot of money here
$100 more

@AmithKK i hope so.
i don't really care if it is fast or not.
if it is slow, i just restart.

4:42 AM
@RolandTaylor Wait... the value of a dollar changes with place?

@AmithKK duh...

@jokerdino I have the same page open here too. But, wait a bit....

1USD == 2BDS

@jokerdino :P, well not too many people use Linux.

@KannappanSampath good luck
@msPeachy they use it indirectly

4:43 AM
@RolandTaylor isn't it a programming language?

google, facebook and twitter has linux underpinned.
heck, Mac is Unix at its core.

@msPeachy jovial?

@jokerdino oh I didn't know that

@msPeachy Seriously?!

@RolandTaylor yes,
@AmithKK what

4:45 AM
@AmithKK Here it is.

@AmithKK what facebook and twitter has linux underpinned? no I didn't know that since I don't do fb nor twitter

@KannappanSampath uncomment line 53 and 54

JOVIAL is a high-order computer programming language similar to ALGOL, but specialized for the development of embedded systems (specialized computer systems designed to perform one or a few dedicated functions, usually embedded as part of a complete device including mechanical parts). JOVIAL is an acronym for "Jules Own Version of the International Algorithmic Language." The "International Algorithmic Language" was a name originally proposed for ALGOL 58. It was developed to compose software for the electronics of military aircraft by Jules Schwartz in 1959. During the 1960s JOVIAL was ...

@msPeachy wow I didn't know that
lol wow

@msPeachy wow i didn't know that too. i thought you were just being jovial.

4:47 AM
@msPeachy thou rocketh

@AmithKK Done. So, are they the partner repositories?

@KannappanSampath yea
