What the hell I just got paid $356.41 for a week where I worked 22.75 hours...that works out to $0.66 more than how much I make...after taxes...
I'll take the free $55 I guess lol
(After taxes I make approx. $13.25/hour)

2:23 AM
Hi yes hello I am back
Exam has been examined

2:57 AM
@UnrelatedString According to a map on a .gov website, the AQI is by far the worst in New Jersey

3:34 AM
@UnrelatedString Whoa is the smoke really that bad?
I assumed it was just like, slightly smoggy

yeah, it's awful. I'm glad it's not that bad here

Maybe the wildfires sending smoke to American cities will strain Americo-Canadian relations, leading to a decades-long war, constantly on the brink of going nuclear, with Britain and the commonwealth countries throwing their military might behind Canada, while the US makes an unlikely alliance with Russia in order to keep Alaska safe
As the fighting rages on for the 49th parallel, the Global North becomes increasingly polarized along a new axis, maple syrup is embargoed internationally, and the cheeseburger becomes a symbol of defiant resistance
The Great Lakes are a site for increasingly complex naval operations, and the developing economies of BRICS throw everything they have into munitions manufacturing, growing into economic superpowers as North America tears itself apart

I'll have you know that new england has its own maple syrup industry :P

Even Europe can't escape the conflict. Eastern Europe and the Balkans get over their long-lasting animosity, and unite to back the US invasion, while Western and Central Europe finally duels Britain over the English Channel
@Bbrk24 Yeah but once the war started, Canadian strategic bombing took it out almost instantly
Turns out maple syrup is readily flammable when you throw enough phosphorus at it
According to a source from 2016, "Section 5: Fire-Fighting Measures Maple syrup is not flammable.", but things have likely changed. That was like seven years ago.

> Conservatives believing heterosexuality can only survive if it's enforced is súch an amazing self-report.

Fun fact: My dad can drink 6 bottles of soju and stay awake.

What is soju?

Soju (; Hangul: 소주; Hanja: 燒酒) is a clear and colorless distilled alcoholic beverage popular in the Korean Peninsula. It is usually consumed neat. Its alcohol content varies from about 12.9% to 53% alcohol by volume (ABV), although since 2007 low alcohol soju below 20% has become more popular.Traditionally, most brands of soju are produced in the Andong region, but soju made from other regions or countries also exists. While soju was traditionally made from the grain of rice, South Korean ethanol producers replace rice with other starch, such as cassava due to significantly lower capital costs...

I see.
@DannyuNDos I don’t drink alcohol, so I don’t have any sense of perspective/scale for this

@Ginger What's the risk of your modpack thing being compromised
Have you ever used the mod Better MC?
If so chances are everyone who's been on your server now has a virus
Okay it looks like I'm not infected, so other users most likely aren't either

5:37 PM
@emanresuA Nothing gives me "Real hope!" like "Real evidence!" of the impending apocalypse
Chrome's been doing this since the feature released months ago and I still can't figure out why it's "sand the"
man the red cross is after my blood hard
They've been emailing/texting me like daily

6:13 PM
heh they removed herobrine again from MC

Ooh nice

A: Why might a civilisation of robots invent organic organisms like humans or cows?

skeepRobot philosophers and cy-chologists have long wrestled with the great question: what is the mind? The great computer scientist Desréseaux famously said: "Computo, ergo sum." And ever since theoretical chemists first proposed the chemical computer, the scientific community has longed to find the ...

@user you dont have to tho
> Ladies and gentlemen, thank you, thank you very much. It's an honor to be standing before you today, speaking on a topic that is very close to my heart, the incredible world of quantum physics. Believe me, nobody understands quantum physics better than I do, nobody. We're going to make quantum physics great again, folks!

Now, let me tell you, quantum physics, it's a big deal, a really big deal. It's like the gold standard of science, the pinnacle of human knowledge. You know, people have been talking about atoms and molecules for a long time, but quantum physics takes it to a whole new l

That is so Trump

> We're going to build a quantum wall, a wall so strong, not even light can get through. And we're going to keep out all the bad particles, believe me.

NO WAY that's amazing

> And here's the thing, general relativity is not just about gravity. It's about time dilation, it's about black holes. Yes, you heard me right, black holes. They're like cosmic vacuums, swallowing everything in their path. But let me tell you, we're going to deal with those black holes. We're going to build a space force, a force so powerful, it can navigate through the darkest corners of the universe. We're going to protect our galaxy, folks. We're going to keep it safe, keep it tremendous.

something doesn't seem right here
they're multiplying
(can someone move that to TST?)

7:00 PM
5 messages moved from The Nineteenth Byte

I don't know what to do lol
but I'd bet money it's some weird thing with my Pi

7:18 PM
nope! this time it's Microsoft's fault

7:31 PM
@RydwolfPrograms what???

You haven't heard?

A bunch of mods were just found to be compromised. I’m not sure how many exactly but yeah

There's been a virus going around, the compromised mods inject stuff into mods that people with those mods write

for fuck's sake
this is why we can't have nice things!
more info plz
if it injects code into mods being written by other people... yikes
I'd better check CB to make sure it's not compromised
how can I check?

You can check if your machine is compromised by looking for certain folders
Be wary of tools that check for the virus as lots of them are also infected

7:34 PM
uuuugh

Check for a .config/data in your home dir if you're on Linux

will do
nothing on my server

Since I installed the modpack and I'm not compromised, it's probably fine
@Ginger Do it on the machine you play on

wait, do compromised servers shut down?

I would assume not
But no clue

7:36 PM
hmmmm

But I'd assume they don't care either way about servers

bc I don't know what happened here:
in The Butter Factory, 42 mins ago, by Butter Factory
Disconnected from server

IIRC the payload was a credential theft thing

yeah, what's the motive?
oh of course

Not MC credentials, like bank ones and online accounts, from what I heard
Altho MC ones probably as well

7:38 PM
how long has it been going on for?
I haven't played MC in a week or two

server restarting...

> There are reports of malicious plugin and mod JARs as early as mid-April.
Yikes

holy hell

Oh it was .config/.data, not .config/data
Honestly as far as possible malware goes this wasn't even that bad
Like it could've been cleverer

7:46 PM
@RydwolfPrograms Oh wow, it’s worse than I thought

Really I think the way operating systems and stuff are designed right now, it's just a ticking time bomb before stuff like this happens

how so?

The fact that there's basically two permission levels, "fuck up everything you care about" and "fuck up everything you care about and install drivers" means that trojans and stuff are trivial. Every application should be run in a secure, isolated sandbox, and need highly specific permissions from the user to do things outside of it
Like how browsers do it. But instead of "do you want to let xyz.com show notifications", it's "do you want to allow xyz.exe to modify files in this directory"
So e.g., Minecraft would only be able to read and write to files in the .minecraft folder. It wouldn't have clipboard access. It wouldn't be able to run things on startup. And mods would be further containerized within Minecraft's permissions.
This also has another major advantage: moving stuff between machines
If all of Minecraft is within one little container, and you know it can't in any way depend on stuff outside of that, you can just copy that to your new machine and know it'll work (ignoring like, kernel version). No need to worry about things like "what should I copy from /etc?"
If every application's code and configuration was all within one container, and everything outside those application containers was cleanly divided into system files and user files, you could trivially make backups or move to a new machine. Just copy over the user files (things like Documents) and the application containers.
Basically everything should be in nested Docker containers, except without the whole "the inside of a container is basically a whole OS" thing since that's bloaty

8:13 PM
@RydwolfPrograms Did you mean: Qubes OS?

Along those lines, yes

I've never used Qubes but it's one of the cooler OSs out there
plus it's been endorsed by Edward Snowden, so you know it's good :p

Just because a guy who gave some documents to some journalists likes something doesn't mean they actually have evidence that it's secure :p

there's also mobile OSs, which implement pretty much exactly what you described... by only letting one programming language be used
which is suboptimal
speaking of: once you're president would you mind forcing Apple, Microsoft and Google to use one, open-source standard for sharing files between nearby devices?

Sounds more like an EU kinda thing

8:18 PM
did you know that Apple prevents iPhones from using Bluetooth file sharing???

The US isn't very good at the whole making-companies-do-things thing

@Ginger well, that's not 100% true
you can probably do it with an app
but it's not part of the OS, like it should be
seriously, it's 2023! I should just be able to send files without jumping through a hundred hoops!

@RydwolfPrograms Like how iOS does it, kinda?

^
for all of its faults, Apple does know how to do security
they have to, in order to maintain their walled garden

Half of it's prolly security through obscurity tho...

8:22 PM
Heck, iOS 16 requires your explicit permission to copy from one app and paste into another

I'd bet massive vulns are found in iOS all the time we just never hear about them
Because Apple finds them not the open source community

@RydwolfPrograms It’s security through “kill your program if you don’t ask the user first” /hj
@RydwolfPrograms Apple has a list of CVEs for iOS/macOS/etc releases

Oh, TIL

There’s a handful of them in every release, it’s just not well-advertised
A weirdly large number of them are integer overflow, last I looked
Maybe that’s why Swift is so paranoid about overflow :P

3 hours later…
11:51 PM
I drew a class diagram by hand yesterday
no use of visio at all
and you know what I found?
absolutely no visual bugs
no goofy arrow placements
no arrow lines inside the arrow head
no need to have strange right angled lines
no persistent boxes that can't be deleted
$1000 and it's easier to do it by hand :p
