-4 here iirc
I know it's either -4 or -5, I just don't know which one's summer and which one's winter

^ ??? Of course northern hemisphere is summer and southern hemisphere is winter.

I'm listening to the OST for Retro Gadgets and boy is it chill
of course it's just one track, but it is quite chill
if anybody wants a copy of said track ping me and I'll send it to you
alternatively, I could upload it with Tragic Wormhole

@DannyuNDos I mean I can't remember if the timezone I'm in is -4 summer and -5 winter, or -5 summer and -4 winter

Idk what that means

Daylight Savings Time

12:12 AM
Oh

and idr which is which

'Cause DST isn't a thing here.

12:27 AM
Actually I think it's -4 now and -5 in the winter because UTC midnight is currently 8PM

1:03 AM
fuck daylight saving

Q: Do unit quaternions admit a continuous square root function?

Dannyu NDosLet $G$ be a multiplicative group. A function $\text{sqrt}: G \to G$ is a square root function iff, for every $x \in G$, $(\text{sqrt}(x))^2 = x$. The unit real numbers, namely $\pm 1$, doesn't even have a well-defined square root function. The unit complex numbers $S^1 \subset \mathbb{C}$ has a ...

Aaargh, my paper would've been a piece of cake if such function existed!

3:08 AM
@Ginger Wait til you learn who got the 2 millionth message in TNB
Hint: His name starts with the letter R and rhymes with nothing in particular

a roach just crawled on my laptop's screen while i was watching a video and i thought it was one of those weird prank things at first. 0/10 would not recommend

come to think of it i wonder what the network wide rankings look like for most messages in a chat room

I've done it for just TNB before
Network-wide smokey prolly wins by a landslide :p
And I probably come in 2nd due to my biological inability to stfu

lol
i meant ranking the rooms themselves but yeah smokey probably wins that too

We've tried doing that before, TNB was top 10 of the still active and public rooms on the SE server, but I don't think it was super high
We're actually ahead of charcoal
2.2M vs 1.8M

3:14 AM
wow

TST's halfway to 100k

can someone send that to the off topic room i sent to the wrong one

2 messages moved from The Nineteenth Byte
Mathematics, Arqade, and EL&U all have bigger main rooms IIRC
The Tavern may also be in that list
Altho that's the meta server, and once we count the other servers SO's probably got a ton of rooms that beat us
Android is slightly above us, New answers to old questions is above us (isn't that a review queue already lol), PHP is way bigger, JS is way way bigger, along with C++, and that's all the unfrozen ones on the SO server
Nope we're 500k ahead of the tavern
So we're probably 10th-15th network-wide
I know there used to be some really big rooms that're gone now, apparently the scifi one got way out of hand

I think what finally ended the old scifi room IIRC was a massive debate about abortion of all things
So TNB may only be 2nd on SE for most off-topic
Anyway I gotta go to sleep so I can wake up early tomorrow and waste more of my day than I would otherwise be able to o/

3:30 AM

I kinda desired some class Cogroup so there would be an instance Cogroup r => Alternative ((->) r), but eventually found that the only instance Cogroup is Void.
Suck it, category theory.

@RydwolfPrograms lol
I'm not surprised
also, link or it didn't happen

12:05 PM
me: opens vs code
vs code: how 'bout I just crash
me: well okay i guess

🙈
anyway, time to work on sendthedamn.website

12:58 PM
I drank with my prof and my junior today, and my junior ate goat soup.
Gotta try it myself next time

1:18 PM
Fascinating

2:18 PM
@Ginger How will choosing the target to send to work? It needs to be some sort of easily memorable code, since otherwise you'd need to send someone a string...in order to send them a string

I guess you send someone a short string in order to send them a longer string

You could do the thing where it's words

Ooh like Magic Wormhole

potato laceration organism escaped, for example
What if...random Wikipedia article :p
So you might get Rettenschöss or Drombeg stone circle as your code

When you can't type ö

2:25 PM
:ö is the "you gotta little something...no on the other side..." emoticon

Thing that bothers me: Websites with backgrounds that aren't white (or dark gray/black)
E.g., the Activist Handbook is this awful yellow color

I dislike websites that have only a dark mode, and it's one that isn't done well
I have Dark Reader, I'd use that if I wanted dark mode
@RydwolfPrograms The Mexico filter
That's honestly not bad
It looks like someone took a decent website and decided it wasn't weird enough so they just tinted it a bit
At least they don't have a bright yellow background with bright red text

Yeah but when you stare at a yellowish background for half an hour then switch to white your vision does weird stuff

2:41 PM
@RydwolfPrograms it'll be a code with a few words, kinda like MW
@RydwolfPrograms I was originally planning to feed random data into SSS but I like this option more :p
I'm not sure how the UI will work
one textbox shared between the two clients? a sending and a receiving textbox?

@Ginger I like SSS more
@Ginger second option

ugh, most WP articles have long-ass titles (1990 New Orleans Saints season, Saint-Paul-et-Valmalle, Chicken-powered nuclear reactor)

Interesting...d/dx ln(x!) approaches ln(x)

*walks menacingly towards ln(x)*

Blue is d/dx ln(x!), green is ln(x)
OKAHY
I have now been inspired
3D irt is
Imagine Minecraft-like blocky maps, with pixel-y guns like in Krunker or that one game everyone was playing in 5th grade
That's gonna be sick

2:52 PM
@Ginger chicken powered nuclear reactor?

is joek

@RydwolfPrograms Irt?

typo
When Unrelated surrgested 3d I was kinda like nah that's gonna suck but nah
I think all the bedwars I've been playing has convinced me

@RydwolfPrograms one or two textboxes?

One readonly representing the current state, and one which can be edited
The editable one has a button under it to change the global state to it

2:54 PM
@RydwolfPrograms nope

Coincidence I think

no, that's intentional
I should've said "bomb" instead of "reactor"
also I sadly don't think WP articles will work
finding ones that are ascii only and short and doing it efficiently isn't really feasible

Why's that?
Just download a list of all the article titles
Then preprocess it to pull out acceptable ones

3:17 PM
Okay apparently Minecraft is banning guns
This better not impact Hypixel Zombies
If it does I will R I O T

@RydwolfPrograms bruh

3:34 PM
@RydwolfPrograms ah yes, just download a list
where could I find this list?

One of those should just be article metadata
> enwiki-20230520-all-titles.gz 318.1 MB

> 92.7 MB
._.
I think it's going to be simpler to choose a few random words from the system dictionary

Anything measured in megabytes hasn't been a big file since the 20th century...

maybe for you in your world of big desktops
but here in Pi-Land every kilobyte matters :b

Can't you get terabyte microSD cards now?

3:38 PM
yes

Assuming the rpi supports them

but I'm still suspicious of anything that big
also yeah IDK if Pis can even handle that much space
lemme see if the dictionary thing works
> mellows rumor's joysticks
> parliamentarian's birdieing unwieldiest
> frittered hospitals lively
hmm
let's filter out words over 8 chars and words ending in 's
much better
on my system that leaves me with 43 thousand words to play with
which is more than enough
> caution Eastern brig
those darn Eastern brigs

4:21 PM
@RydwolfPrograms Who's Joe K?

@RydwolfPrograms wait what?

Guns and firearms are no longer allowed in mods/resource packs/minigames
Actually not 100% sure about mods but the last two for sure

Wait but I have a plug-in for guns

Now against EULA

@Ginger The first two random articles I got today were Mean Jeans and Mexican National Mini-Estrella Championship, which are both significantly more interesting than the typical random article

4:28 PM
@RydwolfPrograms I don't think I'll actually do anything until we get more or I get connected by mojang

4:51 PM
Yeah I wouldn't.

@RydwolfPrograms lmao what the fuck

TIL: Before 1968, Canada had no nationwide law allowing divorce, and some provinces didn't have laws allowing divorce either. If you lived in one of these provinces and wanted a divorce, you had to appeal directly to Parliament, which would form a special committee to decide whether to grant your divorce or not.

5:07 PM
Well, just got a NYT subscription
Since I'm like, never paying attention to current events
Like my way of getting news is assuming that anything I see more than once in the HNQs is something current :p

lol
@DLosc wow

I'm imagining a bunch of guys in powdered wigs in parliament arguing about whether some dude named Ross not doing his laundry is worthy of a divorce

@RydwolfPrograms It wouldn't have been. I don't know if there were set criteria for parliamentary divorce cases, but in places that had divorce laws, the criteria at the time were basically either adultery or abandonment for multiple years.

But he's worn the same socks three times!

@RydwolfPrograms w h a t
for fuck's sake mojang

5:18 PM
@RydwolfPrograms wouldn't what

Do anything until they make you

Yeah that's what ima do

I love when companies send out spam emails that assume I'm wayyy more important than I actually am
Like sure AWS, I would love to "reinvent my supply chain" lol

I've gotten spam calls telling me I can get COVID relief money for each employee in my business. (I had a side job as an independent contractor for a couple of years, so I'm officially a business. It's just me, tho, no employees.)

6:13 PM
Lol I just got an ad for a cruise ship in An article about a boat that sank in Italy

alrighty
rate my UI:
(cc @RydwolfPrograms)
I'm not sure if I should have a "connect" button or not

6:58 PM
nah
alright, implementation time

7:18 PM
going good
ok, time to think about how connections will work
when you click the + button it'll let you input/scan a few random words as a code to add a client
the code can be viewed with the little QR button
either client can do this, but once it's done both clients will see each other in the list
now, question 1: should the non-initiating client have a prompt to accept the connection, or should it just connect?

@Ginger Looks good prettiness-wise, functionality-wise still forming onions
Those taller boxes are looking good in the second screenie

nice

@Ginger What function would the prompt serve? What information would it include?

(it looks good because I decided to actually use a CSS lib instead of making something up :b)

I figured

7:24 PM
@RydwolfPrograms hmmmmmmmmmm
I can't really think of anything, which means that it's probably not necessary

@Ginger So explain to me the devices UI

wdym?

What does "ready" mean? What does the "connect" button do? What do the two buttons at the top do?
Does one device have a special role, or is a pair (group?) of devices a symmetric relationship?
If there's more than one device in the list, are we all in the same "room", or are they all distinct connections?
Ah hang on I think I see. The device list remembers ones you've previously connected to, I'm guessing?
So if it's "ready" (i.e., online), you can connect to it using "connect"?

@RydwolfPrograms correct

Is the QR button a QR display or a QR scanner?

7:28 PM
@RydwolfPrograms the QR-code button shows a QR code that another device can scan to pair, as well as the text-form code
I might change the icon later
the + button lets you scan a QR code or input a text-form code to pair a device
@RydwolfPrograms it's symmetric

It seems like two very different functions are performed by those buttons, their placement next to each other and differing filledness implies a relationship they don't have

ok, where should I move the code-display one to?
I think the + one is fine where it is

I actually think + should not be where it is

why?

Would it be possible to add it like, under the device list? So like, under the last device shown would be a text box and the add button
The + in the top right feels kind of...abstract?
Like I'm not sure I'd instantly grasp that's what I need to hit to start a connection, especially if I had no devices in the list already

7:31 PM
it makes sense to me
I interpret it as "add connection"
or "add device", since it's right next to the word "Device"

Also if I'm understanding this right, there's no concept of a "connection"/"server"/"room", and every unique pair of devices is a "connection"?

correct

So the code you'd bring up would be the same every time, and it represents your device rather than any connection

the system is symmetrical in every aspect except for the connection process
@RydwolfPrograms also correct
I'm not sure how I'd actually implement it tho

Is there a way to remove a device from memory?

7:33 PM
@RydwolfPrograms I intend for there to be, but I don't know what the UI'd look like
I tried adding a delete button next to the connect one, but it looked weird

Also pivoting to another aspect of the UI entirely: send/receive

hrm, what if the short-form code changes every time the dialog is opened, but the server uses a longer, unchaging token internally?
actually nah

@RydwolfPrograms How does that work? Does it send the contents on every keystroke, or on unfocus, or when some button is clicked?

I can't think of a reason that that'd be useful
@RydwolfPrograms I intend for the contents to be mirrored on each keystroke
but since you'd probably be pasting stuff in it wouldn't really matter

@Ginger I can

7:35 PM
really?

If a short code only worked for one connection, you could safely send it over a public connection without allowing anyone to connect to your device
Even better would be if a confirmation prompt appeared to the sender of the code, confirming the connection

but why would you?
this system is meant primarily for exchanging data between two devices owned by the same person
there are other, better options for what you're describing
(such as MW)

Well you have to install MW which instantly drops its practicality for that down to zero

but I digress
(there's also this service if you don't care about using MW specifically)

Ooh that 10 GB limit is nice

7:45 PM
anyway, where should I put the code button?

Where it is now and move +, IMO

mmmmmmmmmm

8:00 PM
@RydwolfPrograms I don't want to move + tho

8:20 PM
Random tangent: Not really a huge fan of upside down pink/bi-colored/etc. triangles being used as a pride symbol

whar ?

Because they did not mean "gay", they meant "sexually deviant". They were basically the nazis putting gay and trans men in the same bucket as [bad people], and adopting that as a symbol of pride feels like unintentionally furthering a harmful message

ohhhhhhhhhhhh
I know what you're talking about

If the meaning's changed now, does it matter?

I honestly didn't know that was a thing that people still did

8:23 PM
The symbol's been taken from those Nazis

eeeh
reclaiming something is a tricky process

@user Not really, but for groups that have had to work so hard (and continue to work hard) to avoid that association, it feels strange to adopt a symbol that was explicitly there to make that association

I guess

8:40 PM
I'm gonna make one of those Introducing Amazon [...] memes
Since there's only one Introducing Amazon Gerard Way and it's kinda mid
Like it doesn't even use the screamo "WAAAAKE UUUUP" from Sleep in the alarm clock scene
Or even Look Alive, Sunshine

Introducing Amazon Jeff Bezos
I love that little dopamine hit you get when you see that a message of yours got starred and you didn't notice

Tfw you're casually pulling 600 Mbps over WiFi 5
on a supposedly 300 Mbps broadband connection, no less

9:11 PM
Apparently the Echo talks no less than 15 times during the commerical
So I've got a lot of clips to find

PFFFFFT
I asked ChatGPT to write a summary of Twelfth Night (the Shakespeare play) and it gave me this:
ah yes, a five-act play with three acts

And no fourth act

yup
mathematicians hate him!

This sounds like a source of information I can trust

at least the summaries it did give me were mostly correct

9:31 PM
ew what on earth is this font
Barriecito

ick

10:13 PM
AAAAAAAAAAA

Guessing it's a font for another language? Hoping?
oh god it is not
that's intentional

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
is the thickness randomized somehow
can fonts do that

They can cycle through variants so that every other 'e' is bold

ahhhhh
or some more irregular pattern for different proportions

Why are we so worried about ads tracking us...for all the data they supposedly have, Google still hasn't realized the futility of advertising bras to me
Chat Mini Ethics Question: My school is, due to a bug in the GIS software college board uses, classed as incredibly rural
And it is, in fact, in a (currently) very rural area...which is about 500 feet from dense middle-class suburbs
Me going to a "rural small-town school" (in the most technically-the-truth way possible) makes me eligible for a chance at a random scholarship

10:30 PM
College is too expensive, go for every scholarship opportunity you get

My initial assumption was that it'd be unethical to apply for it given that I'm a middle-class guy in a middle-class neighborhood in a very nice high school, but they email me so incessantly about it I almost just wanna enter to get them to leave me alone

apply out of spite
and yeah it's like
if they want to specifically go by the school, maybe there's some deeper nuance to the reasoning

They use a specific map, which I can pull up

and also think about if there's anyone else at that same school you'd actually want to see get it :P

10:33 PM
@RydwolfPrograms Half the YouTube ads I get are Spanish

I suppose "as defined by College Board" is as concrete as it gets
Alright, submitted
Didn't put school counselor information because I'm pretty sure she'd be rather confused if I did get an award for going to a "rural or small-town school" lol

> This is not a scholarship program. Students who receive recognition will earn academic honors that can be included in their college and scholarship applications.
lol so it's not even that

oh

it's just college board...idk, agreeing that you...live somewhere? what

10:45 PM
amazing

11:30 PM
Which one of you idiots told the government I'm a gamer?

11:45 PM
My prof requested me to teach him modern C++, and he's already perplexed.
R-value references were a mistake.
