nice rant
thx 4 sharing

@SeanGallardy but, did anybody flag as spam.

yes, five people did

I just like the notion that eLon is firing the people that might be the most capable to fix the/his issues.

people do like to read stories
I'm sure Casey Newton does ok out of it
it might even be true, but that's probably a secondary consideration

A passenger train travelling from 🇬🇷 capital Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki collided head on with a cargo train from Thessaloniki, close to the central Greek city of Larissa late Tuesday night.

Q: Planned Maintenance scheduled March 2nd, 2023 at 01:00 AM UTC (March 1st, 2023 at 08:00 PM EST)

Patrick HurstMAINTENANCE NOTIFICATION: Sites may be in read-only mode on Wednesday, March 1st 8:00 PM EST / Thursday, March 2nd 1:00 AM UTC for up to 90 minutes. TL;DR: The Platform Engineering team at Stack Overflow is planning to perform SQL Server failovers to facilitate required maintenance. We plan to pe...

I don't really do any sort of HA/DR, but why would read-only be needed for 90 minutes in general?

I'm just guessing - maybe prevent data loss when something goes wrong?
is StackExchange already on SQL 2022?

@PaulWhite yeah, horrible

9:53 AM
really is
@Zikato I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but I thought one benefit of HA was being able to keeping a writeable copy up almost continuously. 90 minutes in read-only seems a lot. There must be a good reason.
Oh, I suppose it's so you can rollback in case of horrible failure and not lose any new content posted while the work was in progress

> ... our plan will be to avoid a network-wide read-only window, but we are including a contingency plan should we encounter unexpected problems to fall back to the previous methodology, which would require the network to be placed into read only mode for up to 90 minutes.
it looks like the 90-min would be only in the contingency plan

Imagine if I'd actually read the post

🤣
It is a bit vague though
I wonder what "methodology" has changed
Perhaps they've switched to log shipping
At least 36 dead now in the Greek train crash 😮

@JohnK.N. I don't know how to see/do that. I voted appropriately.

2:12 PM
@SeanGallardy You see the 'flag' text at the bottom of the post?

Yep - so instead of VTC I should use the flag thing?
Is that the SOP?

Well, they're different things
To vote to close, click 'close'

What I mean is, I didn't know I should/needed to flag it

To flag something as spam/abusive/for moderator attention, use 'flag'

I thought just close it

2:14 PM
Either is helpful. Flagging as spam contributes toward removing it from the site quickly

gotcha

It doesn't need a moderator if sufficient people flag

> But after patch some OS patch, the CPU usage get really high
> Need help from SQL

Sounds like a SQL problem

How do people even logic this?

> It is also important to note that we power off our servers each night and turn them back on in the morning through automation.
(different case)

@SeanGallardy :-)

I wonder if they have one of those robotic arms that just swings out and presses the power button

It's probably the master switch in the data centre. You know, the big lever to turn on the diesel....

> When we restarted the server the tempdb should have been cleaned up for everything inside it but the data somehow remained there.

2:29 PM
@SeanGallardy I mean, that's just microsoft's fault...it's right in the name: temp db

We all know Microsoft is well below average at naming things.

Learn....

@SeanGallardy Buy a ranch

@PaulWhite I know you're joking but I've been looking at acreage that is zoned for farming.

I was not joking

2:34 PM
😱

does paul even joke?

I think he has gradations of jesting.

You can have a nice life on a farm. No one will ask you stupid questions about databases

That would be nice
Rocky style outdoor gym

It's good honest work
Some days will be sunny and nice
Other times it will be cold and rain

2:39 PM
It's Florida, pretty much all the days will be sunny and nice

That's what they once said of Californ. I.A.

I have very few nice things to say about that place

considering that you normally don't have any nice things to say about anything, it sounds like an improvement

I used to live there, it was a dark time.
I have many nice things to say, about various items

Q: Training on Locking and blocking in SQL Server

RobMartinI'm looking for any training materials to learn the basics and internals of locking and blocking in SQL server. I asked a question yesterday about NOLOCK hints and got a lot of wonderful responses (thanks to everyone who answered for their time and effort). This is such a wonderful community to b...

Someone is asking for an invoice, looks like

3:09 PM
I have experience in locking and blocking. The Resolution of the said problem is where I struggle.

3:22 PM
am i being catfished

Have you tried casting?

2 hours later…
5:02 PM
@Zikato Catfishing is also done by noodling

5:33 PM
@ErikDarling Not at all. The invite is automatically generated when messages are moved.

@PaulWhite can you close the chat as no longer necessary

No, we're having a great time

5:48 PM
oh i didn't know it was active
anyway i'm right
🏉

Nice rugby ball. 🙂

proper thing to spike with

6:06 PM
Looks like a football
Also no one spoil the matches for me, I don't have TV and don't have any packages to watch live via internet

you wouldn't download a football would you

🤷‍♂️

sounds like someone found their sql authority

6:21 PM
Next week: High CPU due to fragmentation

@PaulWhite I would watch that and expect to be bait and switched

Yes, but can high CPU cause fragmentation?

@SeanGallardy good thing we have adaptiveindexdefrag to save us

@ErikDarling I think you remember how much crap I got for that
Good thing that problem no longer exists

@SeanGallardy if you got an Android phone, and search rugby in the emojis, that's the ball that comes up. But so does the American football as well, so 🤷‍♂️. I guess it's more of the old 40s style American football which did evolve from rugby. Potato potato.

6:24 PM
@SeanGallardy that problem is a real force to be salesed with

@ErikDarling Potentially, heard sales dropped by 10%

So did PLE

@J.D. I do, don't think I ever tried to look it up
@J.D. I know many people call it "egg chasing"

There's an Only Fans for that
2

6:26 PM
@SeanGallardy yea haha or egg-ball.

Paul is the Authority on Only Fans
Maybe he should get a website for Authority

Well that would be nice

@SeanGallardy Pinal Dave already has one. He is the SQL Authority...

never heard of him

but is he the only fans authority like paul?

6:36 PM
@SeanGallardy idk you should ask him.

I misread that as painal dave

🌶️++

Sigh. Another four on Wordle today

Do you use the same starting word or jump around?

I try to choose a topical starting word each day

6:41 PM
What was today's topic?

Well it was very localised
BRUSH

with death

I change my toothbrush at the start of every new season
If I remember, I'll start tomorrow with BOING

you should use an electric toothbrush
preferably one that plays a pleasant song

Don't get on with them
Wife has one

6:44 PM
are you sure you're using it right

They're very judgy

Paul puts the O in Bing

I'm just not that interested in being told what to do by my damned toothbrush
Oh the BOING was because Jay Dee mentioned jumping around

@PaulWhite look, i care about your smile

I'm very much enjoying charcoal toothpaste at the moment. I like cleaning my teeth with black paste. Nifty

6:50 PM
you could just be a chimney sweep

It has tiny orange stripes as well for some reason

are you sure you didn't buy joke halloween toothpaste

Reasonably sure
But it does fit the facts
Hard to be certain of anything
I wonder how many electrical devices one needs to own before a house fire becomes a virtual certainty

@PaulWhite sounds like a quality over quantity situation...
@PaulWhite well in that case, my starting word will be KIWIS

That's a terrible starter. Same vowel twice and plurals are excluded
INDEX perhaps

6:59 PM
Hah not bad.
I've noticed a semi-general pattern that they like to repeat letters in their words.

I went through a phase a starting with words containing X, Z, or Q
KIOSK recently was a tough one

NOLOCK

Six letters though

that's what I get for not reading the transcript

I've been able to get a few words in 2 guesses
normal is about 3

7:08 PM
I'll add CAMEL to my list of candidates

I've been using PIANO lately.

Weird choice for a bass guitarist

NOSQL

You've never played the game have you

Is it even available in 3rd world countries?

7:11 PM
@PaulWhite 😑
4 is far and away my most common outcome haha.

Surprised you don't start with BROWN actually

Throwback!
Wow.

Distant

oh, it's a game

Prior to PIANO, I was using STRUM. I still think it's a good starter, although most people I've talked to disagree 😁

7:14 PM
I use STARE as my starter, or STEAK

Probably shouldn't have shared that, as STRUM kind of plays into Paul's running joke that I'm a guitar player. Maybe I'll switch to PLUCK.

Easy to guess what @Zikato users
Is Lamak the only five-letter named regular?

you can call me erika for tax purposes

Might start spelling it Erick

Everyone says my name as "see an" if that counts

7:22 PM
no double letters
consult transcript svp

Shorn would count

shawn

I'm not female
Although I've also "see an" Schaun, shaun, shauwn.

Séan

Correct, someone get this guy a wine.

7:26 PM
WHINE

wayne
my first guess would always be wordle

People really not getting the five letters thing at all

thank you for getting the joke
laughter is compulsory

Well Lamak did it first
But ok everyone can have a turn

Paul is v inclusive

7:31 PM
No way I'm an XLOCK

more like SIX

Ha!
Very good

I did a thing!

You do that every now and again
Lure is in with months of average chat then BAM

Idiot Savant

7:34 PM
That could be your motto actually

I'm making T-Shirt for it as we type

> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): [DBNETLIB][ConnectionWrite (send()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.
This is the throwback I didn't know I needed in my life today.

7:55 PM
I can't believe Josh wouldn't first check the documentation.

That part of the error message sincerely cracks me up.

8:12 PM
Paul I would like you to rate all of us as chat participants
Now that we’re on that track
With Sean being the average

8:26 PM
One again, I set the standard
4

8:58 PM
well
consider my noodle baked for the day

9:19 PM
@JoshDarnell That's more than 5 letters...
I was doing COAST for a while but then they changed up their word algorithm and I found it got weaker as a starting word. I like CLOUD now though. Idk if that's been much better though.

Cloud strikes again

@SeanGallardy you made me laugh with that

@Lamak I aim to do... things and stuff

Q: Is there are reason to not always use varChar(8000) for parameters?

Jonathan AllenI am using a lot if dynamically generated SQL in the application tier. This isn't he problem. The problem is that I get a new execution plan each time because the parameter size keeps changing. (Or so says my DBA.) Is there any reason why I shouldn't just always use varChar(8000) or nVarChar(4000...
