A a lot of people do. But the real question hasn't been asked yet.

18 hours later…
7:16 PM
election ends
in 43 minutes

7:58 PM
no it doesn't, it ends in 2!
do I understand correctly that it's a manual process to put the votes into OpenSTV?
(which I still can't do, because I don't have a windows box to use)
and... content is gone! (gasp!)

No, there's a file you can download from the election page that OpenSTV can read which contains the votes.

Yeah, I see that now :).
And there's an OpenSTV for Mac too, whee

Winners are Kyle Cronin, Philip Regan, and Nathan G..
6

Congrats!

congrats to both of them

8:04 PM
Congrats Kyle (and Nathan and Philip if you head in here later!).
Two of my three picks made it. Good average.

STV is a pretty strange system
it looks as though my count is decreasing as it's being run
presumably so that no more of the votes cast for me are being used than is necessary for me to win
in any case, sorry you didn't win @VxJasonxV. I voted for you (and Diago). Are you still interested in doing the podcast?

heh
Yeah, of course I am.

I think the next step should be to try to put together a prototype episode

Who all do you have in mind for being on the show?
for said prototype

8:29 PM
@VxJasonxV well, the 4 people that said they're willing and able are me, you, calavera, and Negrino
Cawas said he'd like to be on, but doesn't have the setup for it
so we can probably pick from among those

Q: Ask Different Podcast - Planning Room

Kyle CroninThere's been reasonable interest in doing an Ask Different podcast, enough that I think we should try to create a pilot episode. There are numerous factors to consider, from the format to the hosts to the time it's recorded. Please feel free to help with the planning below.

I vote we publish out podcast via an ATOM feed using SPEEX encoded files.
our*
Greetings Diago.

I defer to your expertise in this matter, I have no idea what SPEEX files are

It was sarcasm, actually. The fact that you don't know is exactly the point :P.
Speex is a voice-optimized codec from Xiph. (Same makers of Ogg Vorbis/FLAC/etc.)
No CMS ships ATOM feeds anymore (ex. WordPress last I knew), and if it's not MP3, it's not universal. If it's not AAC, you're targeting a very specific audience.

ah
ATOM feeds are still supported by readers though, but RSS would be much better

yes, quite so

8:37 PM
is there any way to use the site RSS feeds for the podcast feed? like if we were to create a meta post for every episode?

I think you made an assumption that I haven't, because the question confused me.

sorry
you can get an RSS feed for a tag on the site

right. $wordpress/tag/feed/
If you attach media to a post, Wordpress will automatically stuff it into an enclosure tag which podcatchers use to download content from.

so if we were to use, say, meta.apple.stackexchange.com/feeds/… as our feed, would it work?

oh, this site.

8:40 PM
yeah, sorry

That's an atom feed. How amusing.

I'd like to avoid having an additional site if possible
if we included a link to the podcast file from within the post, are podcatchers like iTunes smart enough to identify them?

To the best of my knowledge, no. They very specifically rely on the <enclosure> tag in an RSS feed.

8:44 PM
do you have any software to edit the podcast together?

From a user perspective, is there even any relevant difference between ATOM and RSS? Everything I know of that consumes one format consumes the other as well.

@Brant apparently not:

Q: Should I subscribe to RSS or Atom feeds?

M4NWith a lot of blogs I can either subsribe to an RSS 2.0 or an Atom 1.0 feed. What is the difference between these two and which one should I chose to subscribe to a blog (I'm using google reader if that matters)? Why do bloggers even offer two different feeds if there's no difference to the end-...

ok, gotta go, battery dying

Yeah, I know there are technical differences, but if I'm some dude who wants to subscribe to a blog, is there any reason I should give a damn?

GarageBand!
Awww, he had to depart.
@Brant Last I knew, which is admittedly long ago, ATOM lost the war, and clients stopped using it.
that is, clients stopped consuming it

Ah.

8:54 PM
See the link I posted earlier: apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html . RSS2. ATOM doesn't exist in the page at all.

Hey. If there's any mod around. Could he make the final blow to this one?

Q: Free utilities for a power users switching from Windows to OS X?

Sorin SbarneaI'm looking for usual tools, like messenger, file transfer, text editor and so on. PS. I would make it community wiki, but I do not see the option?!

Dori's idling, and Kyle just stepped out, unfortunately.

Huh... so how does OpenSTV.app works?
@VxJasonxV Well, it's there, hopes someone see it

9:14 PM
@LoïcWolff Download it, launch it. File -> Run Election. Point it at the .blt data file. View Results!

9:30 PM
Congrats to the winners !!
sorry @VxJasonxV .. I voted for you.. but sad to see you are not in final list..

1 hour later…
10:49 PM
Thanks garikapati.

11:11 PM
Afternoon Philip. Congrats!

hey @VxJasonxV
q q.. on backup the bootcamp via Time Machine...any idea ?
would that be possible at all or not.. if Yes, how can I do that /

hmmm
I don't have a Bootcamp partition. I could swear I've seen it talked about though.

okay.. will search more ....
if not I can post it as a Question..

I see why it would be so hard to search for it... yikes
I can find one, the other, never both.

I did search for it. but didn't get much needed info..
so thought check w/ you for a quick one..

11:21 PM
That could just mean that I haven't actually seen it as a question.
My initial feeling is that you can't backup bootcamp via Time Machine, because it's not HFS+ (the file system format OSX uses)
but I don't know this for sure, and again, I don't know personally because I don't use it.
Hope you find your answer :).

will try .. if didn't get a good one, I will post it in AskDifferent

Time Machine completely ignores NTFS and FAT32 partitions.
FWIW
Probably a question worth asking in order to have it documented on this network.

yeah... that's a valid point..
I wanted to make sure if there is a question/ answer exists here.. before posting mine
otherwise, people will say duplicate..

right
I haven't found it yet. If the "Related Questions" box doesn't show it, ask away.

just posted it on AD

Q: How to backup Bootcamp partition via Time Machine ?

garikapatiI just started using Time Machine for backup of my late 2009 MBP. So far it's backing up only OS X partition and ignoring Bootcamp partition. I also see the point Time Machine completely ignores NTFS and FAT32 partitions. Looking for solution/ hack to include Bootcamp partition also included in...

11:43 PM
hmm. interesting response already

yeah
will see if any more answers are coming..
leaving work..
