A: Should there be tag [aviation-in-fiction]?

JamiecNo, we should not as I believe that would be a meta tag. Looking at the tests for such If the tag can’t work as the only tag on a question, it’s probably a meta-tag. Having a aviation-in-fiction tag would not work on its own. It tells you nothing about the expertise needed to answer the questio...

If it means different things to different people, then provide clarification in the tag's usage guidance, and punish violators with short suspensions until they behave properly.

@RodrigodeAzevedo we're not in the business of "punishing violators" when the violation is due to misunderstanding the usage of bad tags. We already get too much stick for over moderation!

If the tag's usage guidance is properly written, then I don't see why those who do not read the tag's usage guidance prior to using such tag should not be punished with suspensions. People who are sloppy in their tagging are often sloppy in their writing and thinking, too, i.e., they waste other people's time.

Expecting new (and old) users to fully read the tag usage of every tag, and banning them when they make a mistake is a sure fire way to alienate new (and old) users. Tags should be intuitive.

Also, I don't see what is wrong with meta-tags. What is the purpose of a rich library where nothing can be found due to the fact that the librarians are incompetent and sloppy?

12:28 PM
@RodrigodeAzevedo if you want to argue in favour of meta-tags, the place is here

@Federico Arguing on Meta SE is as sensible as shouting at the wind.

@RodrigodeAzevedo meta-tags are a network-wide issue. Meta.Se is the place to re-discuss/re-visit such issues and decisions. if you don't want to discuss there, then don't do it here.

@Federico If Chemistry SE is violating the spirit of the commands provided by the high priesthood at Meta SE, why does the aforementioned tag still exist? Is Aviation SE a community of serfs who work for no compensation and must be infinitely obedient at all times?

@RodrigodeAzevedo You're sliding into ridiculousness now. The suggestion is a valid one, the conversation is fine. But lets stick to sensible conversation please.

@Jamiec How so? I provided an example of an SE where the alleged regulation is not enforced. If it is not enforced there, why should it be enforced here?

12:28 PM
@RodrigodeAzevedo because they are a different SE with a different community and different problems. IF and only IF the community here decides that it is useful here, we might consider it.

There are no "regulations" whatsoever. There is a community-built standard which each stack is within their right to follow, or ignore, as they see fit. But you know this, and I suspect are just trolling.

@Federico And who is the community? Your fellow mods and you? The users who visit Aviation Meta SE? The whole collection of users of Aviation SE regardless of how often they visit or how much they have contributed to Aviation SE? If only it were so easy to determine who constitutes the "community"...

Again, you know the answer to that - you're well aware of the SE model. You have accounts almost everywhere on the network. But for the avoidance of doubt it is generally accepted as anyone who visits this stack, and/or it's meta and wishes to contribute to the agreement of community norms and standards.

@Jamiec In that case, why suggest that I ask at Meta SE? I know it wasn't you who made that suggestion.
@Jamiec You make too many assumptions.

Because you're asking why meta tags are bad, and that's not something we have a view on per se. It's something that the wider stack exchange community agreed was possibly (or probably) a bad idea.

12:28 PM
@RodrigodeAzevedo because you were arguing in favour of meta-tags, not in favour of meta-tags here

@Federico True, but I don't particularly care about meta-tags elsewhere. If it is potentially helpful here, I post here.

that's enough comments under a post, chat is made for this kind of discussion
@RodrigodeAzevedo you are the one that keeps bringing up Chemistry.SE

Let me just add that you are well within your right to add a tag. You dont even NEED to ask approval on meta. But if you start making unnecessary edits just to add your new tag, expect scrutiny!
So, consider carefully if this is something which you feel strongly enough about to proceed

that said, @RodrigodeAzevedo if you really want to see the community opinion, you can write your own answer in favour of the proposal and see what other users think of it

@Federico Yes, my question was inspired by the tag on Chemistry SE.
@Jamiec If I did create the tag, would 1 edit per day be admissible?
@Federico I don't know what I would write in such answer. The way I see it, often, the best way to determine whether a tag should exist is to simply create it and wait for the community to react to it. If the creation of the tag leads to undesirable behaviours, then the tag can later be removed.

3:12 PM
@RodrigodeAzevedo Digging up old questions just to add your new tag would not be admissible IMO. By all means create the tag, and even add it to 1 question which is currently active. Then lets see how used it is in time.
If in, say 6 months, it's being added actively to new questions it's a good indication that it was useful. If nobody is adding it to new questions, then it probably wasn't.

@Jamiec Created the tag and added it to the recent question on Top Gun.
