2:05 PM
back again
can anyone suggest me a tool to find duplicate files?

@SirCharlo Hi

1
Q: when users have been inactive for months and there question remain open

blade19899I have a couple of questions still open nVidia GeForce Go 7600? can it ever run unity? UFW is not logging how do I troubleshoot? Will my data be erased if I upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 But the users asking those question haven't bin active for months?! what to do when users have b...

Should we even allow 9.04 questions?
@SirCharlo thanks. i'll look at it

@Anwar why not

2:17 PM
It is too old and of course un-supported. but it's only my opinion

jrg
we don't support EOLed releases.

:O
10.10 is end-o'-lifed!

jrg
yeah, any new 10.10 questions get closed as well.

Q: Dealing with past-EOL release questions

Lord of TimeHow should we handle new questions regarding past-End-Of-Life releases of ubuntu? Discussion is welcome!

\o/
thanks @jrg

2:27 PM
@jrg ... that doesnt sound correct :\

@fossfreedom lol

... "Just because they should be using a supported version does not mean they should be alienated for not. What if they have a very valid case for using the EOL release and still need support for it! They cannot get said support from Canonical, so we are their next best option. "

yeah that doesn't sound correct to me

jrg
Here's the problem though - if someone comes along and says "How can I compile python3 on ubuntu 8.04" - how do we deal with that?

let the question fester with no answers for 3 months and then close as too localised.

jrg
2:29 PM
or how do we deal with "How can I get the latest apache on my 9.10 server?"

jrg
or any number of other questions that the only answer is "If you want to have a stable system, upgrade"?
Ubuntu IRC and bug squad doesn't do EOL releases. That seems to be the standard for the community at large from what I can tell.

that question you guys just closed is answerable though
that question you guys just closed is answerable though
his mirror doesn't work because he's on an EOL release

The meta question is not-conclusive - and as such we dont have a strict - yes we support/no we close route.

and we already have questions that can fix that

jrg
2:32 PM
yes, and he has it.

are we drowning in EOL questions?
(I don't think we are)

jrg
we aren't, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't think about it - people can and will be using 11.04 for ages to come, since they want gnome2.

I think we'll see a bigger spike than usual in october with the natty diehards - probably complaining about gnome-3 changes etc - and not wanting to upgrade.

jrg
If this was the Ubuntu wiki, would we support creating new wikipages on EOLed releases?

there's already a bunch of 11.04 content
we've got most of those covered
either way, the question that was just closed has an answer!
I think it's a duplicate though, let me find it

Q: How to install software on an old now unsupported Ubuntu version?

made_in_indiaRecently I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my old machine. When ever I am trying to install any software it is giving error $ sudo -i apt-get install vlc The error being flagged is under below. Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't...

jrg
2:39 PM
duped

hah, arguing over what to do with a dupe
We should have realized everything is a dupe anyway
6

jrg
ok, true.
everything is a dupe of one of two things: reinstall, or buy new hardware that is compatible. ;P
2

:)

and MergeList

jrg
and can't forget mergelist.

2:51 PM
> One of the stated aims of Processing is to act as a tool to get non-programmers started with programming, through the instant gratification of visual feedback.

Hey!

hi
help me understanding this question
if you have time

right.

i'm getter dumber may be

he wants to know which app is associated with which .desktop file

3:03 PM
@jokedino: How's your exam?

he wants to figure out which ones are pinned
I reformed the question

Thanks!

then the result of favorites key?

Why does this 'kill' command have this effect? http://askubuntu.com/q/187344?atw=1 #command

Is the answer this? gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites

3:09 PM
nope.
he is talking about .desktop file.

he can find the .desktop file from the output. ok, another level of detail is needed in answer :P

Hi folkseses

o/

\o
I have found a system process that is causing serious I/O usage on startup
it's jdb2
But I can't think of what it could be accessing other than possibly some old database I used to have in college and don't even remember the details of

that's ext4 doing something
I think that's the journal process
<---- could be totally wrong
shows up on google

3:18 PM
Right.
Anyway, any mods around?

jrg
I am for about 20 seconds.
and then i'm out for about 2 hours.

Delete the two please

@JorgeCastro gracias mi amigo!

jrg
@jokerdino well that was fairly cut and dry.

@jrg Thanks <3

3:20 PM
@jokerdino we need a way to stop tags like these from propagating
Maybe new tags should be approved by the community

@RolandTaylor no worries
i went through all 68 pages of tag today and collected a bunch of crap tags

jrg
@RolandTaylor don't sweat it, that tag is so old it isn't even worth raising a fuss about.

waiting for the mods to clear the backlog and then i'll put it on meta

no deleted for others :(

jrg
3:22 PM
oh.

@jrg yeah, but we get a lot of junk tags quickly because we have a lot of users getting to a higher rep these days. I don't think it would be any harm for SO to implement tag approval site wide (on all SO sites). It would be a nice addition.

jrg
i thought that was a 10K thing

i can see it from tools though

@jrg contrary to what we are told during elections, there is a lot that 10k and 20k users cannot do.

jrg
@RolandTaylor and I have no clue what those things are (or aren't), since I never was a 10K er. :(

3:23 PM
All that talk is put down to discourage potential trouble makers from attempting to become mods cause they will think they have the power they need already, but in fact, don't.
/rant.

Interesting.

jrg
well, that just means you're smart enough to be a mod. ;P

Hi @RolandTaylor

I would never know what mods can do until I end up as one :P

answered with a way to have those .desktop files in his desktop..
fearing ...

jrg
3:24 PM
we can suspend people, that's about the only cool and shiny toy tool.

@smartboyhw hey

new tags are in tools
they're just not in a useful place where you want to check often

@jrg I have the smarts, but I have too much snark and randomness to be a mod ;)

yeah.

it'd be cooler to have them in the review queue

3:25 PM
@jorge i check /tags/new

^that (what Jorge said)

@RolandTaylor: Interesting blog 2buntu.com

@jrg what we really miss is the opportunity to delete answers that should be comments (without having to vote), and a few other minor niggles.
@smartboyhw ty

@RolandTaylor giggles
wth. fire drill

just flag them

3:27 PM
Bye

@jokerdino o_o

BB tomorrow

cya @jokerdino

@JorgeCastro true, but it would be easier (and quicker) if 20k or maybe 30k? users could do that themselves.
P.S., we interrupt this discussion to show case something that makes you go :O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just flag them
we do do it
or downvote, what's the big deal
we do do it
(sorry for the repeats, my internet is wonky)

3:30 PM
np

i voted this as a dupe.

@JorgeCastro it's not a "big deal" to me, just a minor niggle (as I mentioned earlier).

@Anwar Are you online the whole time?!

@ignite Not whole time. why?

3:37 PM
No,just was curious enough :) Saw a lot of answers of yours during last few days!

Shrugs
@ignite you suggest me going? ;P

I was just appreciating :)

I was just kidding :)

@RolandTaylor what's NAO?

4:24 PM
Should we edit this question slightly to generalize it, so it doesn't look like it's specific to 11.10?

Q: Slow Wi-Fi Ubuntu 11.10

Kaine McAlieceI have looked through all the previous questions but turning power management off for the Wi-Fi card didn't work. This problem seems to be with the Lenovo Thinkpads. I switched to Ubuntu 11.10 from Windows 7 3 days ago so I'm new to the operating system. Thanks in the advance. Kaine

@msPeachy now (phonetically)
@EliahKagan yeah

runs to his room screaming "I HATE YOU"

@RolandTaylor LOL
you should eat now
hi @AmithKK

@RolandTaylor Done. (I'm not sure I reworded it in the best way possible, but I think I preserved the specificity of the original poster's situation while still clarifying how general it and its solutions probably really are.)

4:28 PM
@msPeachy hmph.

Heya @msPeachy
You going to finish that?

@EliahKagan oh cool
I'll upvote it now

@RolandTaylor Since I've generalized this, it seems to me that perhaps this question and this question can be duped to it.

@RolandTaylor I'm hungry too, I'll have my midnight snack now.

@EliahKagan Done
@msPeachy you don't love me anymore, you teased me with fruit :(

4:33 PM
While I suspect this really is about Ubuntu, this question is probably NARQ, at least until it's edited to provide more information:

akucksdorfI have just purchased a acer laptop with 64bit processor. I have replaced the hard drive with a new one which allows me to save the windows 7 programs on the original hard drive. :D I still haven't left yet
had to clear my inbox of stupid stuff like twitter replies

@RolandTaylor stupid twitter

The OP here is using CentOS, so rather than duping this question, I think it should just be closed as off-topic. I've commented directing them to some appropriate CentOS support resources.

Q: how to run a php file from cron job

user1614009I have a file in /var/www/sample/index.php. The php file will add text to sample.txt file. Now I want to automate this by cronjob in CentOS. I have added my cron code in /etc/crontab as following: * * * * * root var/www/sample/index.php But the above cron is not running. Any guesses on why ...

Q: Install windows 7 through virtual box in ubuntu 12.04

newuserI am using Ubuntu 12.04. I want to install Windows 7 on my system from a cd through virtual box. I searched the detail tutorials over google but did not get the right one. So can some one kindly share any detail tutorial or link which will really help me out. Any help will be really appreciable.

@msPeachy o/

@Mitch can't vote to close posts yet, maybe Roland will

@msPeachy It did not occur to me to be offended. (So no offense taken!)

@EliahKagan okay

@Mitch I've close-voted it as off-topic.

5:04 PM
@EliahKagan Thanks :)

Should we consider this question off-topic as a bug? It seems to me that we should--that this would be better as a bug report--but I am not totally sure.
