My school computers are still running Windows 7 😰
I don't what is the point of being the best school in the state of you cannot even give a good computer in computer lab
Best part is Linux is open source !!!!!!! Everything is ours !!!!

6:18 AM
@Algnis :(
@Algnis :) yes :)

5 hours later…
11:26 AM
@Zanna Are there days where all employees have holidays other than Saturdays and Sundays?

@RandomPerson yes there are many holidays like that

like?
Pongal?

yeah
many

ok..
@Algnis Same to you..
@Algnis :(

like both the Eids, Deepavali, Pongal, Christmas, Good Friday, Independence Day blahblahblah
today is a restricted holiday

11:33 AM
@Zanna oh.. ok
@Zanna I need your help..
I am writing a report about a lunch party related to Thanksgiving for someone else (Thanksgiving is not celebrated in India AFAIK)..
It would be nice if you can suggest me some ideas..
So far, I came up with this..
"Thankfulness is the quickest path to joy.”

— Jefferson Bethke

Celebrations for the Thanksgiving Day was filled with joy and happiness. The staff of XYZ High School arranged a lunch party of various cuisines around the world.

thanksgiving is not celebrated in UK
I consider it evil

@Zanna So you too don't have any idea about the day?

it's like a bulls*** thing
they are "thanking" the indigenous people for "giving" them the land
which is not what happened
@RandomPerson no... they eat turkey and cranberry sauce?
maybe pumpkin pie

hmm.. OK.

I know nothing other than what I've gleaned from the odd American movie

11:47 AM
oh.. OK..

Can you think of some sentences which describe about the various cuisines of food?
cc @Beast
Indian food is famous because of the various spices..
what about Greece food? or the UK food?

@RandomPerson Greek food is mainly about olive oil and feta cheese
And grilled meat
What exactly do you want?

the pics look amazing: duckduckgo.com/… 😋

Greek food is amazing
so fresh and tasty

11:53 AM
@RandomPerson Feta with olive oil and oregano!
Even @Zanna wouldn't resist!

@BeastOfCaerbannog I am actually writing a report (for someone else) about a lunch party which happened in the US for a thanksgiving party. various food cuisines were there in the party it seems..

hahaha I love feta

Well you can say about tzatziki (greek yogurt with cucumber and garlic)
Fava
I'm not sure what you really need to write

@BeastOfCaerbannog even me 🤦🏽‍♂️
I requested the person to give me more details like pics of the food, event, etc.. but they haven't sent me any pics..
and they want the report immediately 😖

Why don't they write the essay themselves? I suppose they know better than us what they ate

11:58 AM
@BeastOfCaerbannog Exactly.. but since they are busy, they want me to write..
I am sure that there was Indian food..

that's not your problem hahaha

🤦🏽‍♂️

what are some popular US food items? (other than pizzas and burgers 😅)

iranian food has amazing rice and uses lots of herbs like dill, methi, parsley etc... italian food has pasta, olive oil, tomatoes, basil... Mexican food has rice, black beans, chillies, crema, coriander leaves, churros... Jamaican food has patties, fried plantain, rice n peas, lots of curry... Ethiopian food has lots of dals and fermented teff pancakes (injera)...

@RandomPerson Fried chicken wings

12:02 PM
@Zanna Mexican tacos?

Japanese food has noodles, very decorative beautiful salads, sushi and donburi... French food is famous for its creamy sauces

France also has many kinds of cheese (most of them smelly)

@RandomPerson yeah idk
French bread
when I was in France I was impressed by the delicate and beautiful salads

@RandomPerson also burritos and chimi-f*cking-changas

careful combination of ingredients
@RandomPerson oatmeal hahaha

12:04 PM
@Zanna hahahaha

I came up with this..
Celebrations for the Thanksgiving Day was filled with joy and happiness. The staff of XYZ High School arranged a lunch party of various cuisines around the world. The spice of the Indian food, the buttery flavour of the Greek feta cheese, tasty Mexican tacos and burritos, Italian pizza, yummy Chinese noodles and various other food items made the feast fantabulous.

:)
good job
if you have time, check out the movie clip I posted!

@Zanna sure..
@Zanna I hope the grammar is fine in the passage..

@RandomPerson yes :)

Does this make sense:
Everyone prayed to god that the pandemic ends soon and life returns to the normal.
I submitted the report to them..
I hope they will like it 🤞🏽

12:23 PM
@RandomPerson yes :)
@RandomPerson Best of luck :)

@RandomPerson I changed "the normal" to "normal".
@Algnis :)

I am planning to switch to newer Linux distribution
I am bored with ubuntu

@RandomPerson I don't like the meaning of the sentence, but I think it's ok grammatically

Can you suggest me?

@Algnis Manjaro?

12:25 PM
@Algnis Newer Ubuntu probably?

@BeastOfCaerbannog May I know what you didn't like?

Newer Ubuntu Like?
I use 21.10

@RandomPerson Praying to god to end the pandemic. It's like removing the responsibility of people in charge.

Maybe Some thing like puppy os (LOL)

@Algnis hmm.. did you try the flavours of Ubuntu? like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, etc.
@BeastOfCaerbannog oh.. ok.

12:27 PM
@RandomPerson I hate them they are just vanilla desktops

@Algnis Then what is it that you don't like? You can use another flavor if you wish. Other distros are not so much different. Unless you have specific needs, the most obvious difference is the package manager.

Is pop os good? I heard that it is now really good with 21.10 release
@BeastOfCaerbannog I am just bored 😑

Another thing to consider is that if you don't use Ubuntu, it's harder to provide help here.

@BeastOfCaerbannog yeah.. :(

12:29 PM
Unix and Linux
Forums
?
But I like this place too

@Algnis Yeah. Been there, done that. I would also like to change, to a rolling distribution perhaps, but I really want to continue helping here (and also get help).

@RandomPerson Manjaro is definitely a good choice
@BeastOfCaerbannog That is what the problem, I would have switched to something like manjaro a lot earlier

@BeastOfCaerbannog It isn't so popular

It's almost pure Arch under the hood.
In any case, make sure to test the distro in a VM for a few days before installing to the disk.

12:33 PM
I like arch a lot
I have its iso
Arch is just best In every way
Now as I am a Linux intermediate (probably pro) I can install Distros like kali and arch without any fear

Apart from being a rolling release, having awesome documentation, and AUR, it's not that different to Ubuntu.

@BeastOfCaerbannog Are you talking about arch?
It is just better I like pacman a lot

@Algnis Hmmm. Being pro is quite a statement I think
@Algnis Yes

@BeastOfCaerbannog 😅, I Didn't understand?

Q: Screen issues on Debian 11

makewithplusI'm facing an issue with screen flickering that appears randomly, several times per hour of uninterrupted work. After a mouse drag, it goes away, but I'm troubled with reasons for such behavior. Some time ago, in addition to this issue, a single transparent blob appeared near the display's edge. ...

I mean that to be a pro you need to know A LOT of things about Linux

12:38 PM
Vote to close
@BeastOfCaerbannog That is why I mentioned probably, BTW are you a pro?

Hahaha! Definitely not. I hardly consider myself intermediate compared to many people here

Debian is not a good Linux distro, It doesn't get update for years!!!!!
@BeastOfCaerbannog If we talk about other people, Then I am not even a beginner

@Algnis Depends on the branch you use
@Algnis yup

TBH Ubuntu is the best distribution I have worked on so far

@Algnis Hahaha! You see, if you think orthologically, you don't really gain much from distro-hopping. But I surely feel your urge.

12:46 PM
That is true, it is just because I am bored with the look of ubuntu
I am looking for some challenges
Pop os! Seem to have a fresh new look
I wana try that
But it is worse than ubuntu
(in my opinion)
@BeastOfCaerbannog 👆👆👆👆

1 hour later…
2:04 PM
I messed up
You know... it's really, really frustrating to have someone just constantly asking for more and more and more and never even bothering to say "thanks". — Catija ♦ 2 mins ago
I guess every time I had an opportunity to interact with a CM, I have messed up 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️
😔

2:20 PM
Ooops... You should be more careful with the way you ask for something from now on. You may have good intentions (I'm sure you do), but the way someone talks over the internet (and in actual life) is very important. For example, if you want a glass of water you can say: "Give the water" or "Could you please give me the water?" The point in both cases is exactly the same, but the first can be considered rude. I think we have talked about that in the past.

@BeastOfCaerbannog Yup. I recall that we have talked about in the past..
I didn't order the CM. I was polite and used the word "please".

I guess it's confusing that we're told not to put "thanks" in comments
@RandomPerson this is really hard to explain, but "please" isn't all that polite

Yeah, but it would be more polite if it was like this: "Can you please also look into this?"

to British people, "please" is like a form of pressure, and pressure is the opposite of polite!

@Zanna probably
@Zanna what? I didn't know that..

2:24 PM
as BeastOfCaerbannog says, what really comes across as polite is phrasing your request hypothetically, like "could you ... ?" or "would you mind ... ?"

@BeastOfCaerbannog hmm. Thanks for the suggestion!
@Zanna then what is polite to British people?

that way, it sounds like you are giving respect to the person's time
@RandomPerson being indirect, not putting pressure, expressing lots of gratitude
2
Catija isn't British

@Zanna ok. Thanks for the suggestion.

but Americans express a lot of gratitude - in fact they are warmer in this than the British I feel

@Zanna yeah... she is from Texas.
@Zanna oh.. OK.
I think I will start a correspondence with her..

2:43 PM
@RandomPerson You're welcome!
