I think some of the arguments there are that they'd rather have more interesting stuff than uninteresting stuff to answer, even if some of the uninteresting stuff gets thrown out at the same time...?

Someone starred my message. That's such a weird star. What do they mean by this?
I mostly want to avoid the main site because I plan to use this build in a Westmarch group and if it gets out how I'm doing this to anyone but the DMs, this build combination might get copied by a bunch of players and become an unkillable scourge.
If it's just me, I can use the ability in moderation. If it's everyone? Build will get banned.

@Axoren so it doesn't get lost, and more likely to be seen and answered

@AncientSwordRage Thanks. Never thought to use stars like that.

Would y’all say there is any sort of definitive rpg categorization system?
I see scattered stuff like, d20 system, free form rpg, that sort of thing, but no unifying form.

Nope, none. In part because there is no overarching coherence to the spaces in which those terms might emerge.

4:25 AM
Oh, I meant to say this earlier: I watched a playthrough of "The Quiet Year" when I totally should have been doing useful stuff today :) I thought it was nice

I love map games like that.

7:32 AM
@TheDragonOfFlame FYI, "d20 System" isn't a broad category, it's specifically games that were built on D&D 3e's Open Gaming License. (Though it is sometimes misused as ANY game with d20 as primary resolution mechanic)

Yeah, that's a legal definition and so has more a widely shared (but still incomplete) common meaning than things like "storytelling game" (with means something very specific to some people, is very generic for others).

Does anyone have a better guess for why this question draws calendar spam than the inclusion of the word fall in the title?

11:56 AM
I'm gonna guess the specific phrase "fall ends" is contributing.

@Someone_Evil How does a spammer end up in such a niche area of spamming? Did they go to spammer college and couldn't decide on a major?

12:11 PM
@Someone_Evil 14 instances of Fall in the post body probably gave it high confidence "This is about autumn for sure!"

@Axoren but then why is one of the spam posts is about Fevrier, the french for February?
I think we can stop posting requests for edition on this question:

Q: Manual of Bodily health abuse?

AWorriedGMMy players have just recently come into possession of a Manual of Bodily health. The very first thing they thought of was just how to abuse it. They are planning on reading it, burying it in the Feywild. The time dilation in my world means that every day in the material plane is years upon years ...

@AncientSwordRage That's weird. "This is definitely about autumn! My favorite autumn month is FEBRUARY IN FRENCH!" Doesn't seem likely.

@AncientSwordRage Rand Al Thor nailed it. I left a comment for him.
@Shalvenay Lore is for closers, not for losers 😁 (Riff on Glengarry Glen Ross)
@nitsua60 That would be me: multiclass Tempest Cleric and Blade singer.
@Someone_Evil The word "fall" and the autumn calendar is my suspicion.
@AncientSwordRage Once they found the site with the spam, they threw plates of pasta at a lot of questions to try and get something to stick.

12:30 PM
@KorvinStarmast yeah real good answer and good comment by you
I've left a comment reply to Dan Bron who seems to have missed the point of the answer
@KorvinStarmast spaghetti does stick to the wall when it's ready to eat
@KorvinStarmast why can't I set a bounty on that ELU meta?

@AncientSwordRage not up for long enough yet?

@KorvinStarmast it's almost a month old by my calculation

12:48 PM
@AncientSwordRage In that case, I got nuthin'

@nitsua60 In your answer here could you address race specific feats more directly?
Unless you think this new uestion should stand on its own.
Others may weigh in on the dupe closure

@AncientSwordRage Don't be that guy! And i've done most of those :) This was my pandemic table, so i"m very used to players coming and going.

1:06 PM
@ThomasMarkov I think you're only reading the title of the linked question. The title is "do any feats carry over," but OP was really (and explicitly, in the post) asking about Alert and Lucky. So I explicitly answered those, and laid out my reasoning (perhaps too-extensively) in a way that I would hope allows one to judge any other feat for themself.

@nitsua60 judgement free zone over here!

So what you think, reopen and let it stand?

IMO the better solution would be to slightly edit the old one to make it titularly specific, de-dupe the pair, and slightly edit the new one to make it clear they're specifically asking about Dwarven Fortitude (not race-feats, generally).
And slap a "related:" comment, probably =)

that sounds good

I feel like if the original had actually been "do any feats carry over" and I had answered that, it'd make sense to update once racial feats existed. As is, I think it's just a bit of a sloppy title that went unnoticed for years.
Thanks for checking =D

@NautArch I'm doing my best but it means no roleplaying 😢

Alright, I think Ive got things squared away, per your recommendations @nitsua60

If I'm giving my (US) number ((123) 555-6789, say) to someone in the UK, what's the polite way to list it? Like that? With country code prefixed? How does one in the UK dial out to US?

@nitsua60 just at +01 to the front I think?

Thanks.

Q: Bounty-like feature on metas

JustinSometimes on a site's meta, I want to draw more attention to a question that has been sitting in the dark. Usually when this happens, I am even willing to offer my reputation as a bounty. But metas don't allow for bounties. On main sites, we have a bounty feature to allow users to draw extra att...

@bobble ohhhh
@Feeds photos!

Does this look like a good dupe closure?

@ThomasMarkov Yep, was in the process of doing the same

is the rule in the DMG or just the PHB?

@ThomasMarkov checking ...

the comments stating the rule are kinda answers in comments, tho.
or at least stating that there is a rule and generally where it is is a partial answer

2:45 PM
@NautArch But kinda necessary to explain why its a dupe.

@NautArch That's my nice way of saying "RTM"

@ThomasMarkov Don't think so, the question is pretty clearly a duplicate.

@NautArch clear to you but maybe not clear to the OP

Why is banana and peanut butter so tasty?

Yeah, I dont think its a partial answer.

2:46 PM
/shrug. not a big deal.

@NautArch It doesn't need a reason to be; it just is. 😁

@KorvinStarmast I corrected my comment, you can delete yours now

I mean, peanut butter with most things is delicious.

@NautArch Im allergic to peanuts. I feel excluded.

@ThomasMarkov I added my objection to the homebrew tag addition to my comment.

@KorvinStarmast Ironically, I recently asked a meta question about this:

Q: Which tag should we use when OP thinks they are asking about a house rule but it is actually an official optional rule?

Thomas MarkovThe description for house-rules states: House rules are small fan-created additions and replacements to core rules in a rules set, and this tag should be used when there are locally-created rules at the core of the question. The description for optional-rules states: For questions about option...

what about the second edition? Ghostbusters International
@KorvinStarmast I feel like maybe that should be restricted to the series?

@AncientSwordRage shrugs I have no dog in this fight

also, do we really need to prefix things with -rpg on an RPG site?

No, but it's handy for cases where the system might be confused with a more general concept or a setting

Yeah, we have a ton of tags with "-rpg"

2:51 PM
@ThomasMarkov Illustro beat me to it, CH 8 DMG also.

@KorvinStarmast So I was right.

@ThomasMarkov Indeed you were; you can tell your wife that you were right and have witnesses. 😁

not even an ugly one?
@Someone_Evil oh cool
@ThomasMarkov so we do

@AncientSwordRage wouldn't it be a postfix or suffix?

@bobble yup
and I've just had coffee
no idea whats going on

3:03 PM
@AncientSwordRage just had mine as well :)

@NautArch are you confusing pre- and postfix though?

@AncientSwordRage I was before, but now i'm over it.

Just call it an affix and be on the safe side?

@NautArch now you'd say your a post-confusion NautArch?

I think it's always safe to say that one is pre- confusion, some confusion

3:07 PM
I'm often con-flipping-fused, which leaves me in a fix

re postfixed tags: both main sites that I'm active on have some tags like that. [russian-literature], [history-of-literature], [enigmatic-puzzle], [computer-puzzle], etc.

Gotta love tables on mobile XD

@Medix2 im trying to fix that one now.
is there an easy converter somewhere?

@Someone_Evil Now presenting: the two infixes of English XD
@AncientSwordRage OH no, you actually already made that pun, wow. I am very happy with it

I tend to use unit-conversion.info/texttools/replace-text to e.g. remove \text{, replace \\ with |, replace & with |, etc.
goodness escaping!

Gosh, people seem to like my question

@doppelgreener did you have any feedback to give on my DGS draft?

oh, right! i keep meaning to give you an update on that

@doppelgreener you can append you thoughts to the end of the document if you like

i gave it a skim through and it's not how i personally might approach it, but then, it's ostensibly a fine way to approach it
i need to go give it a proper read
something on my mind is linksassin raising that we might at the very least need guidelines, but we should super disarm the policy from being "follow this strictly to the letter or else"
because ... nothing should be at that level of escalation

5:02 PM
@doppelgreener hmmmm, maybe we include a section with a sketch of some guidance, and propose that if the policy is repealed, we create a new FAQ style question with that guidance taking further input from the community?

that'd be a good way to handle it
i expect the end result would look not too dissimilar from what we have now, but disarmed and returned to the level of guidance for people to subjectively apply through thier own expertise, rather than laws to follow to the letter or else

5:53 PM
I think this fits our definition of spam.

i agree and i flagged it as such

Q: How can I resonably prevent Manual of Bodily Health abuse?

AWorriedGMI'm running 5e. My players have just recently come into possession of a Manual of Bodily health. The very first thing they thought of was just how to abuse it. Huh, 30 minutes between reopen and hitting the HNQ

@Someone_Evil i dont think the formula cares about the questions closure history

I know that it doesn't, but usually activity (eg. votes) are slow enough that it sorta misses the boat (it has seemed to me)

@Someone_Evil activity on this one blew up pretty quick once it was reopene.d

Opinions on: Shadowrun (any edition)

My peripheral understanding is that it's fairly good if you like crunchy cereal character creation. Is there a particular aspect or thing you're trying to get at?

@Someone_Evil nah, just seeing what y’all think. I’m near the start of a PbP game of it, and yeah the character creation is crunchy, which is a bonus for me.
@HotRPGQuestions how about the infinite Con warforged adventurer?
and also, for that sort of thing, my usual instinct is allow it, crank up the baddies. Yeah, 30 con is op. But, I’d like to see them fight against my 5 warlords riding on ancient red dragons…

@TheDragonOfFlame A friend tried organizing a Shadowrun 5e game in college, it never got off the ground because it seemed too complicated. As a potential player I didn't like how the game had 3-4 disconnected magic/tech subsystems. It seemed like players with specialized characters would end up missing out on much of the game's content. Also, we did a 1-shot test run and all the dice rolling took too long to resolve conflicts.

@MikeQ though isn’t that like d&d 5e? A wizard and a warlock cast spells VERY differently…

Not really, in D&D, spells are spells. You either play a spellcaster or don't. And even if your character isn't a caster, they might still be affected by spells cast by other characters, so they'll end up seeing that part of the system anyway.

7:33 PM
@TheDragonOfFlame infinite con?

@ThomasMarkov because they live forever..
@MikeQ yeah, they got a few different types, but I find that cool. I dunno 🤷‍♂️

8:08 PM
@TheDragonOfFlame I haven't played Shadowrun, but based on @MikeQ's explanation, a better analogy (in D&D 5e) might be how there's one system of spells - though different classes interact with it differently - and then the UA Mystic had its own whole set of mechanics that don't use or refer to the spellcasting mechanics at all.

Not even that. There was like hacking, piloting, robot-craft, sorcery, and I think psychic powers, and none of them really interacted with each other. Since the game was so crunchy with all the dice pools, it meant that if only one player specialized, then the others just sit around and watch them mess with their respective subsystems.
For a D&D analogy, imagine when the group's rogue goes to pick a lock, instead of just doing a skill check, the DM breaks out a whole new set of mechanics, and the other players just watch for 5-10 minutes as that one player does their own thing. It's like each player is playing their own game separately.

@MikeQ I will observe that unless the Player and DM work together, minion mancers in 5e can create this kind of 'log jam during a turn' when the Necromancer or other summoner grinds through all of its little helpers ... while the rest watch the show (I think we've done a decent job of avoiding that in our game)

8:38 PM
@ThomasMarkov You're almost to the 'Real Fine' mark!

@MikeQ What there is: people can enter like a VR world to hack, some mages (not all) can send an astral self to go scout around and stuff, some mages can summon spirits, all mages can cast spells, some people can control small swarms of drones, and psychic powers are just another type of mage
I see what you are saying, but (at least in the game I play) everyone knows their role, and it’s kind of fun to have all the things interact: hacker takes down security cameras and door locks, then a summoned spirit assassin comes and kills the perimeter guards, an infiltrator, flanked by gunner drones, busts down the front door and runs in, grabs whatever they are trying to get and runs out.
(For those who don’t know, Shadowrun PCs are members of an crime group who are hired out by various people for various illegal activities)

9:32 PM
yeah SR kind of has an issue in that strategically optimal play in the setting tends to involve one or two of the party members having to do a whole bunch of preliminary nonsense while everyone else waits
