Q: How to make the file manager default to only list blend files?

ChrisI have to open up a lot of blend files in a row which are living in the same folder along with a lot of folders. When I open up the file browser I get a long list of folders first and have to scroll down a lot until I get to my blend files. My current workaround is typing „.blend“ in search field...

Is your question how to only display bend files in the file browser? If so click the filter icon: i.stack.imgur.com/lKPW9.png and enable whatever you want (it's the default btw).

He's asking is there a way to save the file-browser's search-field as a default template.

Which would do the same right @RandomPanda ? The extension is already set so I don't see a reason why this would be useful.

Does this solution transfer between unsaved blend files?

What do you mean? @RandomPanda

Does this solution only apply to the 'current' blend file? Or all blend files globally e.g like preferences.

What solution? In other words: if the blend is 'unsaved', why do you want to open it? Don't get it sorry... @RandomPanda

I am sorry. I updated my question to be more precise.
@brockmann : you got it. Can I save the filter Settings somehow?

Not by now: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Jqdbbc You can hack it using python though (space data attribute).

Ok, thank you!!!!!!

This should work: pasteall.org/LrOd, it's not nice as it could be though. Install as add-on and a new property should appear below the topbar... it's based on the code of the linked post @Chris Just test it and let me know whether that works for you.
Did you manage to install it? Does it work for you?

Unfortunately not. I could successfully install it (status bar said: yup, i installed) but i doesn't appear in the add-on list...ok, looks like some unprintable character errors in there...

Check the console. If it does not appear there is an error. Try the raw version: pasteall.org/LrOd/raw (pastall messes up the indentation sometimes)

yes, the errors were the unprintable characters. I managed to solve it ...but...i got: [1]: i.stack.imgur.com/UuUe2.png

Looking good, open up the file browser and a new property called "Show Folders (Override)" should appear below the topbar (as mentioned).

new property!? where? sorry for being silly :(. [1]: i.stack.imgur.com/A4Rtx.png

No problem. Where it should be: i.stack.imgur.com/9XfPD.png I'm not quite sure why this does not work for you (tested on 2.92 macos)

i am 3.0.0alpha macos. i try now 2.92....
yup, 2.92 works!!! great! thank you. If you now make it work for 3.0.0 alpha, you will be my hero ! ;)

No problem, have to download it first :)

and it even works when starting blender again. ok, @vklidu: i am sorry, but if brockmann will post this as answer, he will get my "accepted answer" because this works as i hoped it should work.

@Chris My fault, the old habit - replace boolean= (the assignment operator) in the preferences class by boolean:, that's it. I'm going to add an answer in the next hours and will explain how that works in detail
