@MassimoOrtolano or any mod, I hit a situation where I don't see the close votes queue displaying anything (about 40 minutes now) after two close votes displayed under the question. No "suspended" message. Is it because of tags? Or I just pass the 10,000 mark?
The question is now closed (I casted the last vote). Usually, I'd like to do it by reviewing Close Votes queue. But, I think something went wrong, so I just voted while in the main page. The problem still remains, am I being suspended? Or there is a bug or someone is reviewing my review history?
By the way, I have Close privilege on Workplace Se. There I see 42 review close votes (I have not done review for quite a while there).Must be something wrong with my account on Academia SE. Sorry to bother you guys. Again, not a big deal for me.
@Wrzlprmft Just saw you came by. More info. There is a question academia.stackexchange.com/q/166499/546 had close vote quite a while ago. I never see it in the Review Close votes queue. Thanks in advance for any help
I can find at least one question entering the close queue on Graphic Design after your first example didn’t. Also, there is no report on Meta. I presume the phenomenon is limited to Academia.
@Wrzlprmft Okay. As long as it's not me only, I am relieved. Thanks again. Sorry, it's my bed time now. I need to take drugs before going to bed. I'll let you and other mods worry about it. Talk to you later.
Was there a recent change in the way the first posts review queue works? I ask this because am I used the get reviews from that queue within the first five minutes after the question (or the answer) having been posted. But, since yesterday, it seems that a post appears at the queue only about an ...
(please let me know if this question is not suitable here)
Hello! I'm an undergraduate rising senior majoring in mathematics and it seems that I got rejected by REU that is held in my university over the summer. I was late in the game and I haven't had any research before. The only research I can...
@CareerQuestionsonMathOverflow Question about this question -- I suggested in a comment there that the question might be suitable for academia.se, but I realize I have very little sense for whether that's accurate.
Do y'all encourage / discourage "career advice" questions in general?
And I suppose the other aspect is that I think this question is looking for advice tailored to the specific realities of a particular discipline -- mathematics in this case.
I'm a little unclear about how that plays into suitability for academia.se
@TimCampion The biggest problem with that question is that it really depends on the individual person and institution, which means it would be closed for this reason. Also it’s somewhat shopping for a field.
@TimCampion It's sad indeed. Some 30 years ago, when I was a student, an engineering student in my country, for the first two years, would have attended math classes which were at the same level of those for mathematicians. Nowadays, unfortunately, the trend is to reduce more and more the part dedicated to proofs.
I somehow have ascribed this to the fact that mathematical knowledge has been accumulating for hundreds of years, and the knowledge thereof which tends to be relevant to various applications tends to mainly grow and not shrink (perhaps trigonometry would be a counterexample, becoming de-emphasized with the rise of computers) so that the need for "compression" is inevitable.
@TimCampion academia.stackexchange.com/questions/11031/… might be useful to OP; seems like if they did craft an academia.SE question to avoid the issues Wrzlprmft raises it would probably be a dupe of this one
I've started a meta question about these issues on MathOverflow. I suspect there may be folks over here who could give some valuable perspectives on the matter. Feel free to contribute to the meta discussion over there!
@CareerQuestionsonMathOverflow Also, I presume that "Career Questions on MathOverflow" is a bot. Is there anywhere I can find out more about this bot y'all have / how y'all use it?
@TimCampion It's a tag feed. If you look at a chat and you click on room (in the top right corner), you will find the link "manage feeds". From there you can create new feeds, by adding a link to a specific feed.
For instance, for the career on MO, the page is this one: mathoverflow.net/questions/tagged/career On the right of the page, if you click on the link "Newest career questions feed" you can get a link that can be added in a chat feed.
@MassimoOrtolano A regular user who as a room owner can add a feed, too. But only the mods can add feeds to be posted under a new "username" (if that's the correct terminology), right?
@MartinSleziak I don't know what are the limitations for the different categories of users... I'm actually not so skilled in the chat usage. It took me a while to understand the mechanism!
@TimCampion Note also that, as Martin reminded me, a username like "CareerQuestionsonMathOverflow" is something that you can arbitrarily assign to a specific feed.
