12:32 PM
hello room
(if we have a vacuum dog...)

@Vincent 🙋‍♂️

o/

@Vincent 🙂
lol it works!
🙋‍♂️

1:01 PM
@Vikas I can't see this one 'cause Windows

@Vincent You think I have Mac?

I think you have iPhone

@Vincent Good one. I've Redmi phone.
But I'm chatting on my laptop

ah ok. Then it may be Firefox that doesn't display that emoji

@Vincent Yeah possibly. I was thinking yesterday if we could do italics for emojis. And it worked.

1:04 PM
ah ok
I also see your 'raised hand' emoji as the emoji with a Mars symbol next to it rather than a single emoji

@Vincent well.

1:17 PM
@Vikas Wishing?

@Vincent ?

'Wishing well'
both the object: a pit where you can get water, or toss in a coin and make a wish; as well as the act of sending someone words of encouragement
sorry, lame pun :)

@Vincent Well. You can assume so.
I use well for saying "Oh. It's okay/fine".

I realise that. as I said, lame pun :)

@Vincent Got it.

1:42 PM
@Vikas There you go. I hope it's not too much of a novella for you ;)

@Vincent It is :P I'll need to create some time to read it.
@Vincent Once upon a time you also asked a similar question 🤣
Were you also noob at that time?

|—| | !

@Wolff /-/ 3 \ \ 0

1:58 PM
@Vikas I was looking for expert opinions back then, as I had recently started teaching courses and getting this question

@Vincent Oh.

In short I would say "don't touch that swatch"

@Wolff That'd be the tl;dr, yes

@Vikas, kind of related to Registration swatch. Remember in both Illustrator and InDesign to set Appearance of Black to both display and output accurately!
That way you can easily visually see the difference between CMYK black, Registration and some rich black.

I didn't want to touch the entire poor / rich black thing in order to not complicate my answer even further
but there you went :P

2:04 PM
I understand that. But I often help clients who are very confused about this. Actually being able to see the difference helps a lot.
But it is strange to have that shiny button (the Registration swatch) available and when you ask about it people just say: "Don't even think about pushing that". 😁

@Vincent haha exactly
Some might even believe that pushing that button is exactly what you need to do. Like there is some secret brotherhood trying to prevent you from becoming a good designer by lying about that button.

There'a 11 years old kid in my neighbourhood, he often keeps checking my pencils. I tell him not to touch especially the thin graphite leads as they are fragile but still he ignores it and broke a few and again don't stop touching them. I don't know how to react it. The more I tell him, the more he ignores.

Note that I don't care if it breaks or not, won't cost me much. It's just I don't know how should I react to it.

@Vikas Where does this happen? Inside your room?

@Wolff Yes. He's good kid btw. I like him. But I don't know what's wrong what's right in this case and how should I react.

2:18 PM
@Vikas He should be old enough to understand. He does it on purpose to defy you?

I'll be back shortly after eating

2:33 PM
@Wolff I don't know fully, but yes he refuses unless I start saying little harshly. He's just curious and likes them.

@Vikas If you have the energy you could give him some pencils for himself and draw with him.

@Wolff I don't think he's interested in arts at this time. He wants to use for his school homework.
@Wolff Also, that's a different thing. I'll even buy him one. It's just the thing about the behavior I want to understand.
Personally I feel I'm right and want him to obey me, but then I think that children are just like that, you shouldn't stop them. They'll learn with time.

I'm not so good with kids misbehaving myself. Just thinks it's often because they try to show you something and don't know how else to get attention.
@Vikas I think you need to set boundaries. 11 year old kids shouldn't be too small to understand that you don't want them to break your things. If he broke things by accident by using them, it would be different of course.

@Wolff Well so, I should be little more strict?

@Vikas Perhaps. Or trick him. Hide the pencils and see what he'll break then. 😀

2:41 PM
@Wolff Yes, that's my next plan. Few months ago, he would try to use my laptop or phone for gaming, and I was in similar situation. Finally I set tough passwords and now he doesn't try much to snatch phone from me.
He is so stubborn sometimes will catch my hand forcefully try to use my fingerprints on phone.
So I use my pinky finger to lock the phone

@Vikas Haha. That's the problem with fingerprint instead of password.

@Wolff Yes, and bad face lock sensors also have bigger problems.

@Vikas I will try to avoid fingerprints, face and voice recognition etc. for as long as I can. To me the dangers are worse than the benefits.

@Wolff Yeah, but it's in trend here.

@Vikas Same here, but it's a trap. Once it's in use everywhere you can't go back. And who knows how government will look in 2, 5, 10, 20 years?

2:47 PM
@Wolff Oh. I didn't think it that way. You mean they may store your finger prints?
Anyway India has 2nd wave of covid

@Vikas Yes maybe. And in the longer term expand the use for many other things once people get used to it. So more surveillance, less privacy. Anyway it's politics so I have to bite my tongue now. 🤐

Imho you are way too lenient with this kid @Vikas
But then, I am very bad with anyone under 18 or so

@Wolff I didn't realize when did politics start 🤣 anyway my message closed it anyway.

@Vincent If they misbehave I am also. Can feel like trying to fix a stew which was made wrong from the beginning. Lol. That sounded bad.

@Vincent I'll make him understand it next time, then.

2:53 PM
@Vikas Not really because if I start talking about corona here, it becomes politics as well. We are getting a "corona passport app" soon. Guess how i feel about that? 😀

I am a very logical person, and kids' refusal to adhere to logic is really frustrating and scary to me
@Vikas I'd really fly off the handle if a kid I know would break some object of mine on purpose, repeatedly

@Vincent I'm also kind of logic, maybe that's why it makes me feel bad when he refuses.

@Vincent Some kids are cool in that respect though.

oh yes there are cool ones

@Vincent he didn't break it deliberately though, it's consequence of his ignorance of my warnings.

2:55 PM
Some people are good at twisting the situations so it doesn't become a drama, but smoothly changes into a positive experience. Can be hard to have the overview in the situation for me.

I don't know, but I was never good with kids, even when I was one myself
I wasn't good with myself either ^^'

@Vincent Haha, yeah I think I know how you feel. That is perhaps the root of the problem...

^^' = 😅 ?

@Vikas yup

@Vincent 👍🏼

2:58 PM
I'm too lazy to use emoji when on desktop

@Vincent You have Windows machine?

both my desktop and laptop are Windows

@Vikas You mean: '3

I strongly dislike Mac

@Vincent Too lazy to right-click?

2:59 PM
@Vincent +1
@Vincent Then isn't it easy? Windows Key + .

@Vincent Or just press Win + Period?
(That pause is telling)

@Wolff Looks like so. You made it or it actually is?
@Wolff 😅

@Wolff I don't see how I can mke emoji with right-clicking

@Vikas Just made it as a joke. Don't know if there is an official one

And yes, when I'm here both my hands are on my keyboard

3:01 PM
@Vincent Right-click in the text field and choose "emoji" or use the shortcut we mentioned.

not in my Firefox

@Vincent Works here in my Brave browser

Win + . shrinks and resets the screen for me without doing anything

@Wolff What do you see in this logo? (in the letter t). upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/…

@Vincent Works in any text field in my Firefox - just checked.

3:02 PM
you'll have to put up with my 1337 emoji most of the time
I'm... honestly not missing it :)

@Vincent But we are missing them from you. How can you have no emotions??? 😀

@Wolff 😅

@Vincent Win + , seems to that to me. What does Win + , do then?

I just checked in my Firefox works fine @Vincent

@Wolff It temporarily shows my desktop

3:05 PM
Are you using some old version?

Maybe it's because I'm on W8 here
But my laptop is W10

@Vincent Hate that Windows :P

@Vincent Ah!!!

It's Windows 10 feature I think.

@Vincent You have graphical interface right?

3:07 PM
Why are we even forcing Vincent to use them? 🤣

Let's stop now

@Wolff Can you answer my question?

@Vikas Hmmm what do I see, what do I see ...

@Wolff No, I use a c:\ prompt. Doesn't everyone?

Is it a riddle?

3:09 PM
Can you upgrade Windows Home to Pro with very less money? Or you have to pay same price of Windows Pro whether you buy new or upgrade to it?

@Vincent Advanced! I manually flip switches on the main board

@Wolff Is it a riddle?
(That pause is telling)

@Vikas I'm thinking. I'm afraid I just see a "t" right now.

@Wolff Snow white's stitching up your circuit board ;)

@Wolff Oh. Ignore then. I don't know why I see a thumbs up on top of it.
I asked many people, no one sees a thumb. Only me.

3:11 PM
@Vikas Njaa, that's a bit forced.
@Vikas Lol! Maybe you should see a doctor about that hand of yours.

@Vincent is Leet

@Wolff Njaa?

@joojaa ^_^

@Vincent I wish that I got that 😥

7H4NK5

3:12 PM
1337 = LEET?

H4x0R

What's leet?

@Wolff Just a song text I was reminded of. It's from Florence + the Machine's debut album

Elite
(its pronounced e-leet)

@Vikas Uhm. It's a Danish sound you make I'm afraid. Haha. "Nej" means "no", "ja" means "yes" so "Nja" means "No/Yes".

3:14 PM
@Wolff Okay.
@Wolff 😣

@joojaa Urban Dictionary on "H4x0R": "People lame enough to use this word are generally not serious hackers, and are most likely using ready-made and easily-found tools on the internet."

@Wolff isnt njaa let me think about it/ maybe
@Wolff yeah its a pejorative all right

@joojaa Also that.

So maybe nja should be translated as umm

@Wolff you have just offend all 1337 H4x0RZZZ

3:18 PM
@joojaa Haha. Yes, but it's a little bit negative. Like "maybe, but I don't think so".

they will kill you with their |3!TC0!NZZ

@Vincent I didn't write that! Not my fault if the n00bz get offended.

@Vikas Which shortcut did you hit to post that?

@Wolff Open a new tab > search phew emoji gif > download and upload

3:22 PM
@Vikas Hehe yes. You could also just paste in the link

@Wolff Sometimes link don't work
It worked btw.

@Vikas But colors are different?!?

@Wolff yes
I saw it on Slack first.

@Vikas I know. It helps if you find the "cleanest" link to the image and without all sorts of "magic" in the url.

@Wolff Yes
So are we done for today?

3:30 PM
@Vikas Strange question

@Wolff 🤨
Do you guys read newspaper? I mean real newspaper, not online.

@Vikas Rarely. Before corona I sometimes went to a café in the weekend and read the paper there.

Ever since smartphones came, many young people here including me tend to ignore newspapers.
So I feel newspapers will fade away in future.

I've had subscriptions, but they always pile up without me getting them read so I feel bad about it and cancel the subscription.
@Vikas Sure, they already have. Makes me sad, but I'm not even supporting them myself.

@Wolff I know that feel
@Wolff Okay. Then I was right.

3:39 PM
@Vikas But there are things about the paper version that I like better than online news.
I like that it has a deadline and it's a frozen moment in time, so to speak. The online version is being edited as you read and constantly changes.
Also easier to remember something you've read when it's in a unique layout on a certain page. Online all articles are just auto-styled.

@Wolff yeah

Well we get a newspaper on sunday, and one for kids per 2weeks but i dont read them for me its just paper to trash.

😂
Did this change after smartphone era or you always never liked reading them?

3:59 PM
@Vikas, the change has not only been in media but also in content. The online papers still have in-depth articles, opinions, culture stuff etc. But most people just want the news themselves today. The headlines.
And we get them smacked in our face for free whether we want them or not.

4:25 PM
yes

4:39 PM
HI

?

Do you know xbox/ps2?
ps5*

I know xbox, ps2 and ps5. What do you mean?

Okay. I don't know about them. You don't need a PC when you have these to play games?
just a screen and xbox?
Or you have to connect it to your laptop or pc?

@Vikas They are a computer which you connect to the TV.
Basically just a like a PC with hardware dedicated to gaming and a simple OS which just pops up when you turn it on.

4:44 PM
@Wolff Oh (makes sense why they are costly). And how do you add games to it? Normally, on pc or laptop you just buy or download games and install them. If they are on a cd, you insert cd and install on system. But how do you add them on xbox?
Suppose I want to play Cricket 19 game.
I can't play it on pc because it needs a controller thing.

@Vikas I think you can still buy them as physical CDs, but normally you buy them in the online store and download them.

@Wolff Download inside xbox operating system?
It can run internet browser?
or it has store like play store?

@Vikas Yes, it's made all simple. You just have a simple menu where you choose "store" and buy it from there.

@Wolff And in case you have a CD/DVD games (which you buy from Amazon) you can insert inside it?

@Vikas They can also run internet browser and apps for Netflix, YouTube and so on, so you can use it to watch movies as well.
@Vikas Not sure about the newest models. I have an old PS3

4:48 PM
@Wolff So how DVD games work? YOu just insert it and play or you have to install it?
in PC/laptop, I know you have to install each and every modern game.
Is it same for xbox?

@Vikas I think most games needs to be installed on the hard disc AND have the DVD in. Not sure.

@Wolff Oh. It has good space?

@Vikas I really don't know, but I believe all gaming consoles are full entertainment systems today with everything you need to play, watch movies, listen to music, browse etc.
@Vikas Depends I guess.

Okay. Now real thing. I can't afford these things. But when I realized a few games I can't play with keyboards. They need controllers. But I can afford the games as they aren't much costly and I play very selected games (2 or 3 max). But now the problem is I will still need controller for my laptop.

Is there any cheap alternative for those xbox/ps5 controllers (I don't know exact name of that device which has keys to play)?

@Vikas I think it's just called "game controller". You can get USB controllers for PC. Don't know much about them though. They are probably not as nice as the ones for the consoles.

4:55 PM
@Wolff I googled them, and there are many that I can afford, but wasn't sure if they will work or not. I never heard someone buying them.

Lots of hits searching for "game controller for pc".

@Wolff yeah

@Vikas Why shouldn't they work?

just checked on amazon
@Wolff I don't know. That's why I needed a bit clarification. I thought you nned to buy whole thing to make controllers work

I think either the game must support that specific controller or the game is controlled with keyboard and the keys are mapped to the controller. You need to read about that

4:56 PM
@Wolff Oops
I'll need to check the games then first.
I think cricket 19 isn't available for pc anyway.
it's just for xbox and ps

@Vikas But if it's a PC game that needs game controller, surely they specify which they support?
@Vikas Then you can't play it

@Wolff Yes, but first I have to make sure if it's released for pc or not right?

@Vikas Yes, xbox/ps/pc are not compatible

@Wolff Further, I think they just copy originals. Like this title itself says it's copy of xbox controller amazon.in/PowerA-Officially-Licensed-Controller-Windows/dp/…
So it will work I think?

@Vikas You need to read up on that. But it does say "Windows 10". The question is how it works. Either the game just recognizes the controller or you have to map keyboard keys to controller in some program. I simply don't know.

5:01 PM
@Wolff Cool.
I'll buy a cheap controller first and will test on a cheap racing game first.
I fear pc games will end soon

have to take a call ...

@Wolff ?

4 hours later…
8:55 PM
@Vincent Have you encountered any fun word generator software in your data viz journey? I'm looking for something I can plug with Google forms or Excel that looks nice...

2 hours later…
10:55 PM
@curious none that I instantly remember. I do remember @JohnB referring to a random word generator a few years ago, is that what you mean?
