Q: Chain Puzzle: Tabletop Games #10 – Risky Finale

jafeThis is the tenth and final Chain Puzzle in the Tabletop Games series, in which all puzzles are themed around board games, card games, tile games, and the like. Once this puzzle is solved, this Chain Puzzle series is complete! The answer to the previous puzzle (which provided the theme for this o...

just realized it hadn't been posted yet
@ChrisCudmore across? this isn't a crossword, just a list of clues

So then, they're all across.

3:52 PM
Ok, I'm trying to figure out how this works.
27. Summit once named for US head honcho railed peculiarly (6)
Def: Mt. McKinley -> DENALI which is railed* with a pen stroke converting the lower case r in railed to a lower case n. Is that what he means by a pictionary clue?

yep, seems about right
that fits with the pictionary clues i've found so far
(but specifically, it's just just converting the letter after the anagram -- it's changing the letter in the clue, and giving a new word "nailed". if it had been "dialer" you couldn't make the transformation r→n)

OK.. So I'm highlighting O A from the clue, not EA in the answer

right

Say goodbye to all productive labour today.

I would think you highlight O and P, because you "highlight one letter immediately preceding the modified word, and one letter immediately following it."

3:58 PM
Right!

here's my current progress
ah, 21 is S_ + ( (-r)EPTILE ) + S_, reversing "warts"

heh, that UBANGI clue is like the &lit from a while back

Do you want 19?

the final answer might end up being wiki if enough people can claim part

sure

4:04 PM
PAN A MAC ANAL

I've got 12 of them so far, including (I think) 26, which I believe would be a CLUE clue. It contains the sequence INININ (instead of IN) - which I think means we take the second and second-to-last letters of the clue (EH). Anyone found another Clue clue yet and can confirm that's how they work?

Which is a Yatzhee

13, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 24, 35, 37, 38 and 42 are the others

not sure how much time i have to devote to this so i'm throwing progress out there for anyone else
haven't found another Clue clue unfortunately

(Oh and as others may have sussed, the letters we extract spell a phrase from top to bottom - having several consecutively, words are forming!)

4:06 PM
yep, have noticed that in the top-right of my picture

A similar part of the list to where I first noticed it too there!

@Deusovi Seven Sisters can't be a Yahtzee clue as you listed it. I have a feeling it may be a M. Crescent clue (because I believe there's such a place in London) but I haven't checked whether there's such a station.

(And yes, it's unfortunately slap bang during work time at the moment so I'm only getting a chance to look at this sporadically on breaks!)

ah, counting is hard

Seven Sisters is a London Overground and London Underground Victoria line station in the Seven Sisters area of the London Borough of Haringey, north London. The station has two entrances/exits, one on Tottenham High Road, and the other on Seven Sisters Road. The station is in Travelcard Zone 3. Seven Sisters lies between Finsbury Park and Tottenham Hale on the Victoria line and between Stamford Hill and Bruce Grove on the Lea Valley Cheshunt/Enfield Town Line from Liverpool Street, operated by London Overground. Abellio Greater Anglia also serve at peak times. It is a short distance from South...

4:08 PM
and you're correct

Got 29. It's a maze clue.
SUN(star<) TORY

"snug" in 30 stands out as a possible "guns<" if it's a maze clue

Try it with Auditor as a soundex indicator.

i figured it was "genre that can be sung", with a letter swap

also possible

4:15 PM
eastern capital might be E. snug+e -> GENUS*
but I don't see the anagram indicator

@ChrisCudmore Hehe

I have to leave for a while so dumping my progress here as well
https://i.stack.imgur.com/5bWiZ.jpg

These are my ones nobody else has mentioned yet - use if you like...

...huh, i looked for a city called LINCOLN and couldn't find one
geography is not my forté

I've actually used it in a puzzle before!
(not here though - on a geocache!)

4:23 PM
Nebraska

Has to be South America though

besides the one in nebraska

(to fit the clue)

I'll see if I can collect all the current progress during econ (assuming that we don't do much econ, which is generally a safe assumption)

will compile all of the ones here into my sheet

4:24 PM
30 SEOUL ? Makes it genre that can be sung - SOUL and Auditor clues soundex

ahh yep seoul sounds right

Actually 37 is HEKLA - I see the wordplay now (not KATLA like I say in my screenshot)

Which clues have been solved?

@user39583 Nice work on finding a considerable part of the message there!

@Stiv please provide wordplay for my collection?

4:25 PM
Initial letters of the first 5 words

ah, yep

with Maze regal-->lager
I always miss long runs of initials!

hm are you sure UNINININTA MOUNTAINS isn't a yahtzee clue
ah wait no

counting again?

Because it's Uinta Mountains in Utah

4:29 PM
yeah that

UIN-ININ-TA for anyone who's wondering - it a Clue clue so contains unnecessary repetition

but then what's up with clue 7
and 10

This is why I was wondering if anyone had found any others, so I could work out if it looked right - I can't think of another anagram for UINININTA to give a real mountain range...

INNUITIAN

Haha! Yeah, that looks FAAAAAR better! :)
Which makes it a Yahtzee clue after all
I didn't like the 'EH' it yielded so figured I was wrong about it somehow - glad you were able to put it right!

4:37 PM
here's current progress

ah yeah that's better than written

42 Cairo don't forget
I think the last part spells HAVE A NICE DAY

28 probably gives ET

Certainly if 41 is a Sorry clue with rat --> art and the answer is something like SHINPEI* CASTLE (struggling with the first word)

SISTINE CHAPEL*

4:40 PM
Ooh, very nice - got too hooked on CASTLE!

looks like the other two in there are indices 1 and 4

4 is LAPU LAPU which gives the OU as predicted
(Philippines)

nice!

@bobble Agree - Targui clue Tokyo --> Kyoto, Answer should be an anagram of SHANKILA (looking for an island)

SAKHALIN
(word finder tools are great)
current progress

4:47 PM
Also Chris Cudmore found 29 - SUNTORY
37 mins ago, by Chris Cudmore
SUN(star<) TORY
(MAze clue)

added, thanks

34 GULF OF OB - think it's a Pictionary clue (Ealing --> Eating)

36 probably give ON

GOB(-i) containing FUL(-L)OF* (cooked)

ah yep

4:51 PM
Can 32 be NORILSK I'm not sure about NORI, but (-e)L(+s)K
Elk lost head stuck at sea?

"Thank you for participating in the first ever Chain Puzzle. We hope to see you again soon, have a nice day"

yep

1=ALDGATE (Mornington Crescent) DATE+GAL*

ah nice
i don't see any way to extract YO from 31

4:57 PM
Hmmm... me neither right now

bY spot Of

Nice bobble :)

spot = tops?

ah, STOP
oh wait

What are the letters at the aside?

4:58 PM
yes, that

LAKE BAIKAL

@PrinceNorthLæraðr each of the clue types has instructions for how to take two letters, based on either the transformation or the answer

L + LEAK* + interrupted by tops of B_ A_ I_ K_ A_

So it's free two letters?

huh?

5:00 PM
Never mind

36 must be a movie one - 6 letters in from L and R

MON(T) FOREL* for 22

Nice. Been scratching my head over that one!

and YAK + UTS(-c)K* for 32

YAK+UTSK for 32? YAK (long-hair cattle), I'm not sure how UTSK comes together but
Jinx
I didn't know how the C and the S moved around though

5:04 PM
STUCK anag, minus C_

(STUCK* ("at sea") without the 'head' (first letter) of Caribou)

Ah. Got it

Going AFK for a little while - hope you can crack the others while I'm gone! :)

Deus, which ones are left now?

5:07 PM
2 [yahtzee]
3 [pictionary; conical → comical]
25 [index 2]
33 [targui: mali → Lima, likely represents letter L]
36 [index 6]
39 [index 1]
40 [index 4]

Okay
What's the "index"

the number that we'll have to count into both sides of the clue for extraction

5:23 PM
I see

39 = WATERLOO. T(ens)E in WAR + LOO(-k) ("behold")
(Mornington Crescent clue)

5:52 PM
Pretty sure 2 is ACADIA NATIONAL PARK (Yatzhee clue), haven't quite got the wordplay
Aha!
I have most of the parsing
At least for "national park"
N(a-->E not sure why)T+IONAL* PARK (recreational display?)
Okay hold on
There's a Brazilian soccer player named Careca
There's a national park called Caraca National Park
CAR(E--->A)CA, N(E--->A)T+*IONAL PARK
I'm not sure why the E changes to A both times, but seems way too coincidental not to be it
@Deusovi Any ideas?

6:09 PM
Notice we are literally travelling from one territory to an adjacent one throughout this journey
This means we can place the missing clues in certain territories

is the path tracing out anything?

Missing pink 3

2 [yahtzee] = Oceania 1
3 [pictionary; conical → comical] = Oceania 3
25 [index 2] = N America 2
33 [targui: mali → Lima, likely represents letter L] = Asia 10
36 [index 6] = Europe 4 (Scandinavia)
40 [index 4] = Europe 7
So your national park @PrinceNorthLæraðr needs to be in Australia!

Oh, I guess I was wrong with my guess

The path is purely moving in a track around the world

6:12 PM
There's a national park called KAKADU

this must have been a nightmare to construct

Kaka is a footballer!

NET = hoop

could someone star the puzzle link, by the way? it's buried somewhere up there

6:13 PM
Yeah. But put ball?
Ahaha! 40 must be the French Riviera or the Portuguese Riviera!

Pinned

LINGURIA is the only eight-letter word that fits the def of "Riviera Town"
Well, not really, actually

What about 7 letters and the 's ?

It says 8, no?
'S can bit a splitter

6:31 PM
36 = BRANDO, a municipality in the Aland Islands in Finland
BRAND(-y) + O(-j)

(VSOP is a brandy)
This fits with the 6-letter cut needed for a Scene It clue (MARLON) to yield the predicted letters

What does it fall under (category)?
Ah ok

Marlon Brando Jr. (April 3, 1924 – July 1, 2004) was an American actor and film director with a career spanning 60 years, during which he won the Oscar for Best Actor twice. He is well-regarded for his cultural influence on 20th-century film. Brando was also an activist for many causes, notably the civil rights movement and various Native American movements. Having studied with Stella Adler in the 1940s, he is credited with being one of the first actors to bring the Stanislavski system of acting and method acting, derived from the Stanislavski system, to mainstream audiences. He initially gained...

6:34 PM
I've got your wordplay for 2!

DUNK is involved I bet.

KAKA + DUNK containing APARTANOIL*

Ahhhhhhhh
Clever, jafey

So that leaves:
3 [pictionary; conical → comical] = Oceania 3
25 [index 2] = N America 2
33 [targui: mali → Lima, likely represents letter L] = Asia 10
40 [index 4] = Europe 7

6:36 PM
40 has to be the Clue clue
Because it's an even number clue that isn't filled in yet
Which means 25 is the... pictionary or maze?

All assuming 33 is definitely Targui and not one of those

Is Pictionary completed or Maze?

Not sure - Deus was tracking those!

33 can't be maze, so it could be pictionary

oh, more solves!

6:39 PM
Just 4 left!

yup! Can you update the sheet?

All fitting the theme, and we've worked out which geographical regions the others must be from too

yep, will update right now

Actually, is it probably that 25 is the Clue clue? It doesn't say the entire thing needs to be repeated
It could be [word][one letter][word]

updated sheet

6:47 PM
Ah, all the "within the clue" have been solved

(except 3, but we know the transformation there)

Right
That's what I meant :P
3 [pictionary; conical → comical] = Oceania 3
25 [index 2] = N America 2
33 [targui: mali → Lima, likely represents letter L] = Asia 10
40 [index 4] = Europe 7
@Deusovi Casablanca should be highlighted for Scene It!

ah, thank you
then the only two unmatched are Clue and Yahtzee

Which fits our list
I was like Hm, 3 answer clues but four unsolved cc's left? It meant that something had to double up which didn't make sense
I think 40 is the "Clue Clue" since it's an even number answer, and 25 is the "Yahtzee", since it's 11 letters and far more likely to have letter that repeat 5 or more times

yeah agreed

6:55 PM
Europe [7] means it's the French or Portuguese Riviera
Cascais seems to be nice considering CASE and it (kind of) repeats it self, but is only 8 letters

currently trying to find a reduplicative town name there
ah got it
TOUR + TO + U_R

Ah!
Darn, how'd I miss that?

3 = PUNCAK JAYA
PUN + JACK* + A + Y(ankee) + A
(NATO phonetic alphabet)

oh nice

I'm looking through the list of First People in Canada

7:09 PM
Puncak Jaya (Indonesian: [ˈpuntʃak ˈdʒaja]; literally Glorious Peak) or Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m [16,024 ft]) is the highest summit of Mount Jayawijaya or Mount Carstensz in the Sudirman Range of the western central highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia (within Puncak Jaya Regency). Other summits are East Carstensz Peak (4,808 m [15,774 ft]), Sumantri (4,870 m [15,980 ft]) and Ngga Pulu (4,863 m [15,955 ft]). Other names include Nemangkawi in the Amungkal language, Carstensz Toppen and Gunung Soekarno. At 4,884 metres (16,024 ft) above sea level, Puncak Jaya is the highest mountain in Indonesia...

7:24 PM
Just two left!
25 [index 2] = N America 2
33 [targui: mali → Lima, likely represents letter L] = Asia 10

NO RI(L)SK

ooh nice find

Map scan.

Hey, that's what I suggested earlier!

But I don't get Lima as L

7:32 PM
NATO phonetic alphabet

Lima is phonetic alphabet for L (Alfa -> A, Bravo -> B, etc.)

right.
Hi Jafe!
You glorious bastard
One left. 25

Gah! I'm stuck on 25

25 = 5^2
I'm helpful

7:45 PM
Sqrt(3^2 + 4^2)
no sqrt. My bad

2x5 + 2x5 + 5
25
what kind of clue is 25?

Yhatzee
It's in the provinces of Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta

I think 25 might be TEE+PEE(CREE)K

Hmm
It's in montanna though

Teepee Creek is a hamlet in northwest Alberta, Canada within the County of Grande Prairie No. 1. It is located north of Bezanson and east of Sexsmith, at the intersection of Highway 674 and Highway 733. The hamlet is located in census division No. 19 and in the federal riding of Peace River. It was a farming and ranching community that became an oil and gas based economy during the 1980s. == Amenities == As of 2006, the community had Teepee Creek School, community hall, fire hall and arena. == Attractions == Teepee Creek is known to most people for its stampede. In the 1960s the stampede was...
A very small town indeed!

7:58 PM
Ah!

Fits the Yahtzee too

Yup
celebration

doesn't the last repeated letter have to be in position 3?

No. Length of the repeated section.

8:01 PM
oh, mixed it up with a different clue

I solved... 1? 1 1/2? 0.75?

3 hours ago, by bobble
bY spot Of

I solved half of a clue

^ my single contribution
3 hours ago, by bobble
spot = tops?

I got 3 or 4, but hints in chat really helped.

8:02 PM
The completed map - might make a good illustration for the solution

Well, I "solved" one the same time as Deus, but couldn't get the full wordplay, and I figured out the National Park of (6,8,4)

Others may have solved independantly as well

are you satisfied with the first completed Chain, Stiv?

@user39583 Solved a huge chunk

Stiv: Can you trace out the path on that? Or is it too much to ask

8:04 PM
@bobble I'm very happy. I think that all went incredibly well!
And a great ending from jafe to wrap it all up :)

I solved half (although some of them overlapped with other's indicidual solves)! Also checking back the chat history, it seems people overlooked my MON(T)FOREL* for some reason...
Anyways, glad to be a part of it and thanks to jafe for the great puzzle!

@bobble Can you help me with the remainder of my clues?
I'll email you later

maybe? I got a bunch of physics homework
might have to wait until the weekend

I'll email you later. That's fine

@ChrisCudmore Looking at the image I'd like to redo it anyway, as it's bit fuzzy up big. I'll redraw it...

8:06 PM
oh, nice!

What level physics?

AP, I'm a senior in high school

I'll do the homework. you do the clues

also, did Omega Krypton post a partial answer and then delete it? I can't see how else it would say they modified the post

yes

8:15 PM
Who's doing the answer?

i'm currently typing it up

Prob Stiv?
Or Deus

I'll contribute a map

alright, answer ready - should i CW it?
(community wiki, not content warning)

Content warning: contains cryptic clues

8:29 PM
hehehe

I don't care either way. My contribution was minimal

I'd say CW, with a list of the users who submitted answers in the room

oh definitely was going to include the list either way

(I knew you would)

is the map ready?

8:36 PM
Partway through! Feel free to post and I'll add in when done!

@Deusovi I guess, I might give my 2 cents as well. Since I'm often too lazy to post answers, I really don't mind that the person actually doing the work in writing it all down gets the rep for it, so imho it doesn't have to be a CW.
I personally don't really care about whether my (non descriptive) user name is mentioned either, but I think it is polite to say that it was a community effort at least.

alright, posted as CW (since opinions seem to be either "don't care" or "yes, CW") - can un-CW if people think the compilation is enough to go over that line

I solved 0 clues?
why am I creditied?

Moral support

oh, i can remove you if you want - you did help out some, even if you didn't solve any clues directly

things like that, or helping fill in some of the message

8:43 PM
I was just surprised to see my name listed first as "various clues solved by", but yeah, I did help a small amount
only thing I can think of would be to change the wording somehow to make it clear that it was both solving clues & doing other stuff that indirectly helped?

Well, sometimes coming up with a partial parsing can trigger the solution for someone else

I feel honored to be credited among gods and legends :D

@Deusovi Take the rep.

gods and legends and the tiny crown that helped with clean-up

(and the little tree)

8:46 PM
Two of the ones I solved were the result of other's grunt work.

many hands make light work

snug -> sung for example, and whoever narrowed down the map locations.

i actually said "snug" might be "guns", then someone cut in with "but what if sung"

Yeah, I was playing with both and looking at the List of world capital wiki looking for both guns and sung.

9:07 PM
And that's a map, people!
2

that certainly is a map
