That reminded me that it might be useful to save the tag info for somewhere: mathoverflow.net/posts/167372/revisions "Peano arithmetic (or Peano axioms) is a set of axioms for the natural numbers proposed by Giuseppe Peano in 1889."
The tag has empty tag-info.
In seems that when adding the tag into the question, the tag-info for the synonym is added, there is a related post on Mathematics Meta: Tag excerpt not showing up for synonym: why?
When hovering over a tag, the tag-info of the master tag is shown: Tag synonyms should show the parent tag's description in the tags page
I am not really sure to which extent such behavior is intended.

Indeed the fact that putting the mouse on the tag gives "9 questions" and clicking on it yields "216 questions" is probably not intended and rather lame.

7:11 AM
@YCor But the tag you mention in fact has 9 questions. The two tags have been synonymized, not merged.
Another thing influenced by this is the list of top users - but that probably does not matter that much here, it is unlikely that somebody would get dupehammer in these tags: Which questions count for the purpose of tag badges and dupehammer for the tag synonyms? and Mjolnir doesn't work on old synonyms (should it?)

7:40 AM
The bug is that tag A has 200 questions, is made synonym of tag B which has 10 questions, and then putting the mouse on tag A displays "10 questions". Another drawback is that clicking on tag A results to 200 questions. Both of us know why, but this looks cryptic. Something should say somewhere "tag A redirected to tag B" or something.

If course, if you really consider it a bug, you can report it as a bug.
I'll be optimistic and say that it is possible that MO mods know what they are doing and that they know the differences between creating a synonym with/without merging the two tags.
It might be interesting how frequent/rare is the situation like this. (I.e, tag synonyms where questions exist in both tags. Those are necessarily the synonyms which were created without merging.)
SEDE query showing (approved) tag synonyms where both tags have some questions: MathOverflow, Mathematics.
There is no such synonym on MathOverflow Meta and one on Mathematics Meta.
I should keep in mind that tags which are synonyms are still considered as two separate tags. (This is mainly relevant in situations when synonym was created without merging. Of course, the advantage is that such synonyms are reversible - unlike merging.)
Until now I did not notice the difference in the popup shown after hovering above the tag or in the list of top users.
Oh, so the data in SEDE are already updated, and are also shown in that query.
Other than that, there are the synonyms for deprecated tags: What to do with the synonyms for the deprecated tags? and Recent tag synonyms for deprecated tags.
SEDE queries returning questions in peano-arithemtic and theories-of-arithmetics.
Two new tags and were created.

Q: Tree-width of graphs in which any two induced cycles touch

monkeymathsLet $G$ be a graph s.t. any two cycles $C_1, C_2 \subseteq G$ either have a common vertex or $G$ has an edge joining a vertex in $C_1$ to a vertex of $C_2$. Equivalently: for every cycle $C$ the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting $C$ and all neighbors of $C$ is acyclic. Let's denote the class of...

Would maybe also be a suitable tag for "A chess question of W.T. Tutte"? One part of the question is: "What is the earliest reference to the question?"

Q: A chess question of W.T. Tutte

Ian CalvertIn "Graph theory as I have known it", p.12, Knights Errant, the late Tutte mentions as an aside the chess question "Does either Black or White have a certain win from the initial position, given perfect play by both sides". Is there any literature on that possibility of a black win, that is the ...

YCor: I saw that you have edited this question (and also the tags). I have added also , since the question asks: "What is the earliest reference to the question?" Of course, if you don't consider this tag as a suitable, feel free to remove it. (You have much more experience with (re)tagging on MO, I would trust your judgement over mine.)

In general I don't think that "what's the earlier reference" particularly deserves the history tag, unless there's an emphasis on this aspect or if the historical aspect is "visibly" relevant. Nevertheless, I see no particular need to revert the edit.

Thanks for the response. So I'll leave the tag there - following the part about "no particular need to revert the edit."

I managed to find some posts related to the issue that you brought up. This one is on Meta Stack Overflow: Can the tag wiki hover text show synonyms? And two posts on Meta Stack Exchange: More or less information in hover on synonymed tags and Show main tag description below synonym tag.

Q: Can the tag wiki hover text show synonyms?

LaurelI was looking for tag wikis to edit (on meta), so I went to the last page, where I'll often tags without any description. I see the ux tag, which people may not realize means user experience. I click on it and I see that I am editing the user experience wiki, which defeats the point of what I wan...

Q: More or less information in hover on synonymed tags

Lance RobertsI've found that the hover for a synonym of a tag, not only doesn't tell you that it's a synonym directly (though seeing no quantity for it clues you in), but it also has a synonyms link. The original tag doesn't have the synonyms link. I now know that that will tell me if it's synonymed (for wh...

Q: Show main tag description below synonym tag

Suvitruf - Andrei ApanasikTags page. There is no description shown below synonym tag. But when you hover this tag, you can see description in the tooltip. Could you show main tag description below synonym tag?

is "hover" what pops up when the mouse is on the tag?

Yes, that is what I meant, I am not really sure about the correct terminology.
WP: Mouseover "In computing, a mouseover, mouse hover or hover box is a graphical control element that is activated when the user moves or hovers the pointer over a trigger area, usually with a mouse, but also possible with a digital pen. Mouseover control elements are common in web browsers. For example, hovering over a hyperlink triggers the mouseover control element to display a URL on the status bar."
