Does anyone here know how to interpret the ingredients of medications? I have a mix of essential oils with ingredients like347mg of ethanol, 136mg of Eucalyptus oil and so on, all adding up to a total of 870 mg. But what os the rest of the mixture? Water? And how much of it? If I fill up to 100 g of completed mixture, the concentration of the ingredients is homeopathic at best...

@lila yeah that's it :P
@Stephie the little one? less than a month i think?
@Elmy hm, no clue
google isn't very helpful here too
it basically tells me abouts active/inactive ingredients
medical sciences.SE could help you out medicalsciences.stackexchange.com

@CaldeiraG I'm already searching there, but no luck.

@Elmy first try was to search there :P

@Elmy do you have the complete list? If it’s something that’s made by a pharmacy, there’s sometimes a description with what the active ingredients get topped up. Usually in Latin.

@Stephie I think I found the answer already: chem.libretexts.org/Courses/Windward_Community_College/…
The complete list is only available in German and contains nothing more than X mg of anything. The problem is that it contains several essential oils that are toxic to dogs and I was trying to find substitutes.

@Elmy you do realize that I am German? ;-)
What are you trying to do/treat?

@Elmy oh crap.
The recipe has a total of 523 mg oils to 347 of ethanol (alcohol). And it seems that 870 mg would be one dose?
The rest is Dreisatz (cross multiplication).
So to prepare larger amounts, one would simply make sure that the ratios fit and apply the given dose.

8:43 AM
@Stephie According to chem.libretexts.org/Courses/Windward_Community_College/… for a 30 kg dog one dose would contain 10g ethanol, which sounds more realistic. But all of the other oils must be replaced with something not toxic to dogs

Just checked: The (at least here) common product „Gelomyrtol forte“ to treat sinusitis contains 300mg of essential oils per capsule. And it makes you smell like Eukalyptus. Considering that, the amount on the website you linked to seems about correct for a single dose for an adult human.
Huh?
Didn’t the recipe say mg of ethanol?
Yep. 347 milligrams.

@Stephie 374 milligrams of ethanol per kg body weight makes 10.410 mg ethanol, which should be 10 grams, right? In the end It's more about ratios than grams because you wipe the mixture over the skin not ingest it.

Ah. I had kind of assumed it to be taken orally.
And for an oral dose, 500mg of essential oils (in total, not per kg) sounds on the hefty side but still normal for an adult human.
In other words, I didn’t see any reference to “per kg”. But many have overlooked it, of course.

No, that was my initial question. Some googling revealed that it means "x mg per kg body weight"

9:00 AM
Would that matter if applied topically?
You’d have to apply around 25g, which is almost two tablespoons.
Not sure whether this is doable?

@Stephie True... that made me realize that I shouldn't suggest experimenting with unproven recipes and get some approved antibacterial solutions from a vet instead.

Poor dog.
Possibly time to let him go. Not because of the smell, but because of the pain and other discomfort that is bound to happen soon.
How’s the dog eating with a half-rotten mouth?

Q: I wanna ask this question and I am not sure, if it fits the site's guidelines

TimI wanna ask a question, but I'm not sure, if I should. I don't wanna have it downvoted to oblivion or even deleted. So I figured I'd ask here first. This is what I'd like to ask: How to convince my cat to eat its enzymatically hydrolysed diet? The situation Our oldest cat developed a pretty nas...

Q: Should this question be moved Biology SE and how would I do that?

TimI've posted a species identification question earlier and learned just now that these aren't really suited for this site. So I'd like to have it moved to Biology SE but I don't know how to achieve this. When I click flag below my question and go through the menu being offered, I can only select t...
