I'm... skeptical... of GSS outside Troggy's guidance, particularly in the hands of white Americans. It's got some cultural and design pitfalls.
I wouldn't trust the average big-name actual-play streamer to do it justice without harm.

5:52 AM
@BESW I mean, I'm kinda technically a white american?

@trogdor Yes, but I know your specific style and approach already.

that's true

So I know that you're not gonna lean into the author's Maidliness, nor turn the author's culture into an exotic pastiche.

I thought of the second one but I wasn't even thinking about the first one

Yeah, like some of the art is... easy to take in a creepy direction if you're thinking about that kind of Japanese cultural touchstone.
And a lot of overseas consumers of Japanese culture... do.

I really wish he hadn't also published Maid
like it's fine for Maid to exist but I wish it wasn't a shadow over GSS
that's what I mean specifically
it's definitely unfortunate

Both of those games are made for and by a specific culture, and using them outside that culture can be messy. I trust that you are conscious of this, taking care to minimize harm, and are open to being asked to change things by your players if it's not working for them.
Since we're still less than six months from when one of the most visible "do no harm" TRPG streamers crashed and burned by failing a very VERY simple opportunity to do no harm, I think it's reasonable to be wary of streamers using games outside their wheelhouse.

Yeah
I think it's always reasonable honestly
To be wary of that
I've watched a couple of games that I've played or run that didn't seem to be handled right
Which isn't so bad except in that medium you are teaching people that that is the right or possibly only way to play

6:20 AM
Yeah. And not like "you got the rules wrong" not-right, but like "I wouldn't feel safe at your table" not-right.

Huh. That's a direction I really didn't consider.

...are you familiar with why RollPlay cancelled Far Verona? (content warning: sexual assault)

Yep. I also had never heard of RollPlay prior to hearing that news.

6:44 AM
@BESW yeah
@BESW I only just looked that up after you said this and wow
that's definitely on the list of things
IE the list of things that make me feel like it's not great to just automatically trust a streamer playing a game to do it in a way you can emulate or learn from

Even before... that... Far Verona was an example of a show that talked about safety tools but didn't show them in action.

Hm, well I figured the point of watching another group play isn't to emulate, but to learn possible approaches to the gameplay. It's not to show the One True Way of playing it. Grains of salt, and such.
Plus, if the viewer sees something they don't like in one particular group's recorded game, they can simply stop watching. That's preferable to joining a group, finding oneself uncomfortable, and then finding a safe route to walk away. Does that make sense?

@MikeQ I would be fine with that if I believed everyone took it that way
I don't think everyone does
XD

True, not everyone does understand that.

35 messages moved from TRPG General Chat
@BESW I've moved this conversation to NAB because users that aren't familiar with that are likely to google it.

6:56 AM
Yeah, that probably needs a content warning.

that is exactly what I did
so yeah XD

7:11 AM
@BESW I'd heard about the incident, but didn't know the name of the stream/game/company/whatever, just the individual.
