1:04 AM
Good night to all, and you too, @quid!

1:20 AM
Good night @amWhy

1:58 AM
@allesia_b Hi there, I am now.

5 hours later…
6:38 AM
hey all
does anyone have a link for the english version of principia by newton?
i found a latin one on project gutenberg and a supposedly incomplete one on webarchive
im really interested to read calculus from the hand of Newton himself

@sai-kartik Did you check the links given in the Wikipedia article: Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica
There are two links to Wikisource with English translations, for example.
And several other links, some of them might be worth checking.

also @quid, im confused. the rep you have shows 52.2k here while you have 38k on your mse profile.. ?
@MartinSleziak i have no clue how that did not cross my mind. thanks!

@sai-kartik Reputation in chat should be the sum of reputation of all your accounts.

@MartinSleziak yeah thats what i guessed.. just wanted to confirm. thanks again!

By a quick search I did not find a place documenting specifically this. You (or somebody else) might have better luck searching.

6:47 AM
well if chat rep is the sum of reps of all sites, things don't quite add up. my rep shows 1464 which is the same as my mse profile!

> The reputation on chat.SE is supposed to be all your 200+ rep accounts' reputation combined.
I do not know how reliable that information is. But it is consistent with your profile.
You are below 200 rep points on other sites.
So that's consistent with the information given there.

7:26 AM
@MartinSleziak I see .

6 hours later…
1:44 PM
Hello, @quid! Thumbs up on your recent answer on a meta post about a second problematic username that was deleted! +1

@amWhy thanks for the feedback.

@quid I just don't think the meta post was asked in good faith, nor that the username was created in good faith. I mean, I don't wanna see any username like PuckYou, e.g. (Even if they claimed they were a hockey fan!) You hit the nail on the head in your answer.

@sai-kartik I have a copy of this version. It provides good commentary.
That being said, I think that you will rapidly find yourself outclassed by Newton.
I spent a solid 6 months trying to understand that work, and got (perhaps) a third of the way into it before giving up. Newton's thinking is not at all modern, and there is not an obvious path from Newton to us.

Hello!

@quid You can delete my last comment, if you think my comment might inadvertently encourage another user to try using my example of a bad username.
@hexlance Hello!

2:09 PM
@quid Sure, Bye, but seems you've already left.

@amWhy yes, sorry, I sometimes check the site briefly when I have a couple of minutes spare. I understand that this can be not ideal, but it can, I feel, also be helpful that I show up to see if there is something going on.
@amWhy I think most are on the same page on this, given the overall reaction to the post.

No problem, @quid. I understand. It's just that sometimes I feel slightly embarrassed when conversing with you, but you're not here. But I know I've likely put others in that situation, too. I did not mean to blame you. I get it.

@amWhy I can see that. But also SE chat is designed on purpose to work fairly well in an asynchronous way not just in real time.

@quid I agree, but I still find it hard to fathom that the "question/complaint" in fact got at least two upvotes.
@quid I understand. And I know that I don't often "leave" chatrooms, in general, and so ones icon persists in such cases, for at least some period of time. You are much better about leaving when you know you'll be away for a bit, than I am.
@amWhy @quid But I suppose there exist a handful of libertarian oriented folks who see "free speech" always as an inalienable right, even if offensive.

2:34 PM
@amWhy I think that's even an optimistic view of the situation. :-) Some just like the drama.
Anyway leaving now. I'll be around sporadically but not much.

@quid I was trying to attribute good faith. But I suspect you're right! See you!

1 hour later…
3:35 PM
@hexlance ,hlo
@amwhy,@quid, hlo to u also!
been busy today, see you at midnight(if possible)

@Qwid What is your time now?

3:59 PM
@amWhy , 9:30 pm

@XanderHenderson thanks for the link!
@XanderHenderson of course 😅 I'm already having troubles with opticks

@Qwid I expect I'll be around at your midnight!

Hey @ amWhy!
I guess I'll join at around midnight too

@sai-kartik Hello!
@sai-kartik That'll be great!

C ya soon

4:13 PM
@sai-kartik In any event, primary sources in mathematics are very difficult to read, and they get more difficult with age (with the possible exception of Euclid's Elements, which is still reasonably accessible).
Typically, the first person to have an idea is still struggling with the concepts, and so they use a lot of ad hoc notation and argument.
After a few generations of work, things tend to get smoothed out to a point where they can be taught to undergrads.

2 hours later…
6:24 PM
@XanderHenderson i guess that sums it all up xD
@XanderHenderson i see.. makes sense

6:36 PM
and btw @quid great answer on meta !
that question should have technically been placed on hot meta posts but of course the score prevented it..
@amWhy @Qwid anyone online right now?

@sai-kartik I'm here.

hey there!
how was your day?

@sai-kartik For me, I'm at 1:40 p.m. So far so good, but my day is not over yet :-)

@amWhy ahhh alright

How about your day, @sai-kartik? How was your day?

6:43 PM
@amWhy well it was okayish
nothing out of the ordinary
same routine- eat,sleep,study, repeat
if all was well, i'd be waiting in line for college admissions but my entrance exam that was supposed to be conducted in april got postponed to july
and so all the other exams followed suite

@sai-kartik That's better than NOT okayish, right? ;-) Sometimes days can feel like a bit of a grind, but then there are days where the pay-off from all that work makes it all well worth it.

@amWhy well , you can say that ..

@sai-kartik Argh! Sorry about that, but everyone else who would have been in line with you no doubt got postponed too, so you're not "behind in the game"; just that the pandemic has set everyone back a bit.

@amWhy yeah exactly.
well basically i wrote the same exam back in 2019 but i couldn't qualify for the college i wanted
so i took a "drop" and prepared for it again
and thankfully, my score improved
but now, it's been a year since i dropped and this exam pressure is getting a bit too much to handle..
i was under the mindset that all would be done by may end so im having a bit of trouble adjusting to the current situation

@amWhy , taking classes huh?

6:57 PM
@amWhy's a teacher?!

@sai-kartik , I have 6 teachers now for 3 subjects and they all give different homeworks😑
@sai-kartik ,professor*

@Qwid oh tell me about it :)
were giving the same exam in the end

@amWhy, for u

@Qwid How sweet! Momma and baby?

@sai-kartik , I don't know much, she teaches undergraduate and graduate.
@amWhy , yep but not mine

6:59 PM
@Qwid i legit see this as a meme

@sai-kartik ,pardon please
@sai-kartik ,depends, I see this as cuteness

@Qwid argh tagged the wrong message for replying. I was gonna tag this..
@Qwid hmm interesting..

@sai-kartik , what should i do man, going nuts

@Qwid you're still in 11th
wait till you reach 12th
12th is the real grind :)

@sai-kartik , that's the problem, I have done 11,12 already :-:'(

7:05 PM
@sai-kartik How about we focus on mutual support and encouragement here?

@Qwid wait what!!!

@amWhy ,I agree

@amWhy yeah sorry bout that ..

@sai-kartik, I hope this meme made u a little less stressed

No problem, guys, but I think we can help each other out here. Things can turn out Win-Win if we do so!!

7:07 PM
@Qwid i don't get it youve done 12th syllabus in 11th?

@sai-kartik ,* I did it in 10

@Qwid goodness gracious
i respect that 🙏

@amWhy , since we don't have the word lose in our dictionary
@sai-kartik , why that?

@Qwid All the better!!

@sai-kartik I did it purely for fun

7:09 PM
@Qwid cus that, my friend, is an accomplishment i consider worth respecting
@Qwid throws in even more respect and apologizes for what ive done earlier

@sai-kartik , there must be thousands (if not lakhs) of students which can outshine me

i tried my hand at 11th syllabus in my 10th grade and couldn't take it at all

@sai-kartik , to clear some confusions, I don't consider chemistry as fun

@Qwid that doesn't matter.

@sai-kartik , we need teachers/professors to guide us

7:12 PM
But @sai-kartik Each comes into their own at different ages, whether 11th, 12th or a year later, doesn't matter. Don't ever feel intimidated. You have what it takes to succeed. I see that.

@sai-kartik , that screwed up my boards

@Qwid i would agree if you were talking about inorganic, but c'mon organic is really fun
@Qwid yikes..
@amWhy thanks for the pick me up.. really needed that for days now

@sai-kartik , to be honest I don't really study chemistry (for fun) and till now there's been no mention of organic

@sai-kartik I wouldn't have said it if I did not mean it!

@sai-kartik , look up this guy @gurkirat singh

7:15 PM
@Qwid ohh i see.. but just brace for organic. imo, its really amazing..
@Qwid on mse?

He didn't even do hcv, just ncert, for maths also AIR 500 something

@amWhy 😁

@sai-kartik , no

@Qwid WHOA .
in adv?

@sai-kartik yep, I saw him every day playing basketball for 6-8 hours

7:17 PM
@Qwid i have no words..

I once had a professor, with a thick accent, who told every class he ever taught: "there are three ways you can react to any situation. You can be frustrated or angry, you can be intimidated, or you can choose to be inspired!" I've never forgotten that.

for the record @amWhy i seem to be intimidated and inspired at the same time

@sai-kartik ,I used to get goosebumps when I met the in person
@sai-kartik , it's normal

@Qwid now that's respect.

7:19 PM
@sai-kartik I hear you, but that sounds like inspiration with a healthy amount of being humble. The greatest people of all, have a combination of those qualities.

He's free these days, if you want to talk to him :-)
U can try Instagram
He's there

@amWhy hmmm....
@Qwid yeah but i've deactivated mine xD

@amWhy, can I ask u for a favour?
@sai-kartik , brilliant!!

@Qwid Sure!

I am conducting a survey, so I will ask some questions

7:23 PM
@Qwid 😅

@sai-kartik I think Stephen Hawking was an exemplar of both brilliance and inspiration, along with the capacity to be very humble.

@amWhy totally agree !

@Qwid Well okay, but I will choose to discontinue, depending on the nature of the survey... :-)

@amWhy , and his book was just ..,......(speechless)
@amWhy , u can backout anytime

@Qwid First question (this is a three parter): what is your social security number? mother's maiden name? first pet's name?

7:25 PM
@Qwid I agree. His entire life was a testament to his integrity and drive.

What is capital of India?

@XanderHenderson we don't have ssn's in india 😅

@XanderHenderson Hah!

@sai-kartik I'm aware. The joke only requires that you know what one is, however.

@XanderHenderson , I didn't get it at all

7:27 PM
I'll offer my first pet's name: Boots. :-)

@Qwid Indianapolis, but you misspelled Indiana. :P

@XanderHenderson Hah! You have a very active funny bone today!

@XanderHenderson , I was asking about INDIA

@XanderHenderson someone's really keen to change course of the survey xD
@Qwid it was a joke 😶

@XanderHenderson ,which part of world do u enlighten by your mere presence?

7:28 PM
@Qwid You misspelled Indiana again. There is no place called India in the US, and, as an American, I can tell you quite confidently that there is nowhere outside of the US. :P

@sai-kartik ,I know that 💀

I think that there was once a place called "Ing-land", but we fought a war with them, and now they don't exist.

@XanderHenderson More joking.
@XanderHenderson Yeah, I think they've even been thrown of the EU, too, so certainly don't exist anymore!

@amWhy Ha!

@XanderHenderson ,I believe u must have had your pacifier with you at the time of war
So how did u fight?
😅😅

7:31 PM
@Qwid I don't get your point...?

@XanderHenderson , you said 'we' faught them.

anyway guys, I got to go now. C ya soon

@sai-kartik Sleep well!

@sai-kartik , gn

@amWhy thanks 🙂

7:33 PM
@Qwid The standard interpretation is that "we" denotes, collectively, the people of the United States.

@Qwid gn bro

Thus the US (we) fought a war against England (them).

@XanderHenderson , ok. Just like UNITED 'WE' STAND?

Thought when the Lone Ranger uses "we", an appropriate response from Tonto would be "Who's this 'we', white man?"

There is a place called India in the United States
India is an unincorporated community in Ellis County, Texas, United States. An old variant name was Morgan. == History == The first settlement at India, originally called Morgan, was made in 1853. A post office was established under the name India in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. == References... ==

7:34 PM
@MattSamuel , u win this round
@XanderHenderson, (nowhere to be seen)🤣🤣

@Qwid Never underestimate the power of US-centric worldviews! Though please understand that this conversation has been in jest, with many of us poking fun at some US-centric worldviews.

@MattSamuel I refuse to acknowledge the place name of an unincorporated community. Also, from the wiki, it appears that the name was imposed only so that the feds could put in a post office.
Keep ur durn Fed'ral gubmint outta mah geography!
:P

@XanderHenderson , u miss the point sir

@Qwid I am quite sure that I did not miss the point.

@amWhy , yeah surely. Having fun RN

7:39 PM
@XanderHenderson @Qwid Xander is poking fun at (some) Texan's mode of (un)reasoning. Not at all at you.

When presented with the Wikipedia article, my choices are (1) say nothing, (2) say "ah, so there is a place called India in the US", or (3) double down on the joke of American ignorance. I find (3) to be the funniest.
I also happen to know that there are a large number of people in the American west who get really pissed off about the fact that their communities were renamed 100 years ago by the post office.
Eagle Valley, NV is an example.

No idea about them, anyone interested in learning how to say hi in hindi?

Let's all admit that some forms of humor are not readily translatable across cultures. Humor is often relative to circumstances and history one is very familiar with.

@amWhy Indeed.

@Qwid Hi indi?

7:42 PM
@amWhy It's RAM-RAM, in hindi

I don't see a ram-ram in Hindi, but there is definitely a "Hi" (it is right at the front). :P

@XanderHenderson,@amWhy, thanks and it's time for bed

@Qwid Okay. Literally, or are you withholding a punchline that English speakers might not ascertain?

@amWhy ,no
Search for it

@Qwid Okay, RAM-RAM, and goodnight. Sleep well.

7:45 PM
g'night

Night

@Qwid Indeed, I looked it up! :-)
Sleep well, @Qwid!

I never vandalise any room

@Qwid I don't think anyone here accused you of that. I asked about a "punchline" only because I did not know if you were proposing a joke: What is/How does/why is ..................... (and when others guess wrongly): there comes the funny punchline. I am sorry if you felt we weren't taking you seriously; I was simply if you were proposing a joke you are familiar with, to catch us off guard. Not with intent to vandalize, by any stretch of the imagination, but giving us "our medicine".
Cross cultural humor can be risky, because and I can say for certain that no one here meant to make fun of anyone in particular. Please keep educating us, so we, particularly US folks, can learn to understand other cultures better, @Qwid

@amWhy ,my mind is full of crazy stuff(conspiracy theories, thriller novels, etc), sometimes I act out in a not so acceptable way. Sorry for that o:-)
@amWhy ,ya sure, if it were not for people like you andothers my education wolud have been incomplete

7:55 PM
@Qwid No need to apologize. It's all good. Help to keep some of us in check! Seriously! You have nothing to apologze for.

Well of course there is namaste but that's way too popular outside of India. So I guess @Qwid has really taught something new

In fact, @Quid and @sai-kartik, you both have a great advantage over many Americans, because you have a good grasp of English. While I know Spanish, and some may know French, the number of bilingual, let alone multilingual citizens in the US, pales in comparison to most in the world. Believe me, I respect your capacities to communicate well in English as a second language, knowing English is a very difficult language to acquire as a second language.
@sai-kartik Guess what my username was for one year? :-) The way-too-popular Namaste. I find it to be a beautiful word.

@amWhy the reason we know it well is because in metro cities, English is taught as first language in school...
@amWhy what was it ??
Ahhh
Yes it is a nice word..

@sai-kartik I just revealed it! It is a beautiful word, and expresses so much more than just its seven letters.

But to be honest with you, no one in a 1km radius around me uses it (except to address elders in the society)
@amWhy yeah I saw that 😅

8:04 PM
@sai-kartik :-)
I like that it is a greeting that honors/is respectful of the one being greeted.

Yeah .. pretty neat
I could call upon my parents to brag about everything great about India, but they're asleep rn and are gonna be real mad if I wake them up xD

@sai-kartik I think you have a lot to brag about. I wish more Americans and westerners knew of all the wonderful things there are to brag about wrt India. And the same holds true for much of the world. That is, that the world, and most peoples' lives, don't revolve around what happens in the US.

@amWhy Ahh yes. The world is beautiful, if you look at it from the right direction

@sai-kartik Indeed!

Also I would like to brag about India starting with the number 0. This site wouldn't exist without it :p
As in both the math part and the site itself :p

8:11 PM
@sai-kartik Indeed! You are right!

Anyway, I really gotta go now. Back to back mock tests from tomorrow. Good day to the US!

@sai-kartik Take care, and sleep well! Namaste!

8:28 PM
Whenever you stop back in, @quid, give me a holler, unless you're swamped and don't make it back :-)

9:24 PM
@amWhy hello. Swamped or not I always make it back. :-) But I'm afraid I'll be quite busy for the next two days or rather the rest of the week. That is my passages will be brief and unpredictable.

9:35 PM
@quid Glad I caught you here then, now! No problem. You're a busy person!

@SmileyChimpy narrow escape there ;-)

Are you sure you're not moonlighting as a rock-star, @quid? ;-)

@amWhy no, as a DJ.

@quid Ah, that explains it! :-) Or else you're a phenom in the world of chess, which you've failed to inform us about!

Leaving for now, but I'll play one last song.
How do you like that version @amWhy (I won't see your reply right now but I'll see it!)

9:46 PM
@quid Just finished it. To be honest, I liked the beginning better than the end! But it was, all in all, err, enlightening! ;D

@amWhy yes, I am not that big a Dubstep fan either. (Really leaving now.)

10:15 PM
Just never been a huge fan of electronic music tech, @quid.
There are still a few arenas where humans perform better than do computers!

11:07 PM
Thanks, @AlexanderGruber for the closure of this

11:29 PM
@amWhy the computer is the instrument though.

@quid Not so much. That's a stretch.
Maybe I'm just being a "purist". I'm a bigger fan of acoustic guitar than I am of electric, even. :-)

@amWhy why? If somebody plays on an electronic keyboard or on a piano the difference is really the instrument not the involvement of humans.

@quid I just flagged a post as a dupe of another post, which the user since deleted. No one had answered the former post, so there was no reason the asker could not have edited their previous (now deleted post), rather than reposting, and upon my commenting, deleting it.
@quid Humans can do incredible things in the way and touch they use to play a piano, or strum an acoustic guitar, or vibrate the bow of the violin they are playing, or adjust the force of the breath they give to a flute. Having a menu of computer-generated sounds is not the same. And most of all, computer generated music/electronic music just does not compare to human performances on age old instruments. I can tell the difference each and every time.

@amWhy I checked. From the comments it seems that the poster is more or less co-operative. It seems you resolved this well among you.

@quid Okay. I'm satisfied.

11:41 PM
@amWhy I won't insist. I still like electronic sounds, but mostly actual electronic sounds not those that imitate an instrument.

@quid I'm with you there!

For instance isn't the ping a nice sound.

@quid I liked it better before it changed! But yes, both were computer generated.

I don't really recall.
Anyway I am afraid I need to leave again.
The one the meta needs a bit getting used to.
See you!

@quid See you!
If you haven't left yet, @quid, did you ever hear the link to a math.se I posted about "the music of pi"? It was computer generated, and not particularly beautiful. ;-)

11:46 PM
@amWhy not yet
I'll be curious, but not now.

@quid C u latr.

@amWhy see you

Hi Gone! any thoughts on the recent debate about electronic (computer generated) music, vs. music performed by humans on traditional instruments?
@Gone, btw, you are missed, and I miss you too.
Maybe you've viewed one of my favorite flashmob performances of Beethoven's 9th?
Anyway, @Gone, no need to respond if you don't want to. But we do miss you.
