Q: Did Benjamin Franklin mix up his friends?

AlexIn Chapter Two of his autobiography, Benjamin Franklin discusses a trick he and one of his friends played on the rest of their group, wherein Franklin pretended to be the author of his friend's poem. When the time of our meeting drew nigh, Ralph called on me first, and let me know his piece w...

that's why I am asking if anyone can investigate its correctness.
If it is found correct, then I wish to add it to Goodreads quotes.

Q: What's exactly meant here by "private gentleman"?

Ahmed SamirIn "The Worst Crime in the World" by G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown and his friend, a lawyer, was talking to a rich old man who has lived alone in a castle for a long time, and who has just said that he will never talk to his son as long as he lives: The lawyer said: “Why, what on earth has ...

Q: Trying to find novel about a woman who goes into deep introspection while stranded away from home

Carl WitthoftThe woman is upper-class British, stranded I believe somewhere in the Middle East late 19th century or so (she's waiting for an often-cancelled train). While stuck there alone, she starts to realize that her husband was madly in love with a friend of theirs; her children have rejected her, and s...

Assorted few books as a jumping point if anyone wants: Dead Magic #1: The Black Veins by Ashia Monet; Deathless #1: The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna; Binti #1: Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

I'm half-expecting someone to suggest Nnedi Okorafor for a reading challenge. That would provide the necessary extra motivation to read her work :-)
I already have thirteen suggestions on the new suggestions thread so I'm waiting for others to add suggestions.
Wasn't she actually suggested already?
I think you mean Nalo Hopkinson, which was a great topic challenge.
Nnedi was discussed in chat fairly often (especially when BESW was around), but never suggested as a topic challenge.
When we had Nalo Hopkinson as a topic challenge in August 2018, we got 14 questions, which was the highest number of questions up to that point. But this was in part because several of her stories were available online.
@Tsundoku No, if anything I would have mixed her up with N. K. Jemisin, but it seems that wasn't an actual topic challenge either.
20:24
Ah, I think Jemisin hasn't been suggested either.
I think it's worth checking whether some of the stories by Nnedi Okorafor and/or N. K. Jemisin are available online.
I'm sure they are, the question is whether they're legally online...
I think in Nalo Hopkinson's case, they were legally online. But, yes, we should definitely check that in future suggestions.
For Nnedi Okorafor's stories, the author has done the "homework" for us: see Stories Available Online on her own website.
See also Bibliography on N. K. Jemisin's website, which also provides links to online versions. I am assuming that these authors would not guide you towards stories published illegally...
We can't tell people what to read (see some of the comments on Increasing representation of black SF characters and authors: Ideas and discussion on Meta SFF), but we can highlight certain authors and works, which is sometimes sufficient. It has worked well for me.

Q: What is literary merit?

TheRealTengriI need to write an essay on how I think a story contains literary merit, but I haven't studied that in months so I completely forgot what literary merit is. I am not asking you to write the essay, I just want to know what literary merit is
