Hey look what's in the bundle: Hex Kit by Cone of Negative Energy is a multi-platform desktop application for building hex maps to be used with table top role playing games.

If you want some shiny stuff to use with it, World Champ Game Co. has a beautiful collection of watercolor hexes and symbols for $5, proceeds to charity.

@NautArch nope, no feat yet
@MarkWells yes

2:47 AM
@Medix2 I'm out of the comment-editing business =)

@BESW yes :) am familiar with it myself :D

I didn't recognize it was you 'cause you were logged in as an eel.

@BESW XD

Not only that, his phases looked <dons shades>...
odd?

hey there @nitsua60, how're things going?

3:01 AM
@Shalvenay Busy busy busy day. You?
(But in mostly good ways.)

@nitsua60 was actually kinda busy doing some EE tinkering myself

nice.

sadly, the circuit didn't work the way I was expecting it to :/

Did you release a puff of smoke?
IME that either means there's a new pope or I done circuit bad.

no smoke, thankfully
the other sadly is well...if you thought textbooks were expensive, they have nothing on what UL charges for standards

3:04 AM
Well, that's... their business, right?

part of it, yes, but it's very frustrating all the same

(stress was on the word "business," btw, not "their." I realized that tone could be pretty ambiguous.)

in happier news, I also found the time and energy the other day to put in a Public Input to the National Electrical Code
(inspired, believe it or not, by a DIY.SE question!)

Sweet--does DIY's meta have the sort of culture where it'd be kosher to post something about that there?

(the Code section that says how tightly you can bend the NM cables that are used for the wiring in your walls these days bases the bend radius limit on the cable's diameter, without accounting for the fact that many NM cables these days are flat, and that's been true for some time now)
@nitsua60 I think this may be the first time that such a thing has ever come up, even
@nitsua60 is there some precedent from another Stack you can point me at?

3:09 AM
Right. And since nobody's goind to bend across the flat, the bend radius really should be indexed off the thinner dimension?
(Gotta run, btw. Have a good night.)
@Shalvenay Not that I can think of.

@nitsua60 yeah, that's the idea

I wonder if writing.se or graphicdesign.se has anything where they celebrate users' work.
Actually, I think photo.se might have something like that.

@Shalvenay I think it's mostly folks bragging in chat.

@JoelHarmon eheheh
(I was also thinking the Meta post could serve as a more permanent tracking tool than a Stack comment on the post that raised the issue, too)

Sometimes "advertising" could be a better phrase, if they're looking for people to test stuff out.

3:17 AM
(say if you had a [language-lawyer] SO question that turned into a DR to a standards committee somewhere)

@Shalvenay On the other hand, I'm most familiar with norms around here, but I'm out of touch enough that I didn't jump on either of the two recent DW questions, so....

Q: What is the break point for using a level 1 spell slot for Divine Favor rather than for Divine Smite?

KorvinStarmastDivine Favor (from a level 1 spell slot) lasts for up to 10 rounds, and on a hit does 1d4 radiant damage. On a critical hit it adds 2d4 radiant damage. Divine Smite (from a level 1 spell slot) is good for 1 hit, but does 2d8 radiant damage. If the hit was critical it does 4d8 radiant damage. ...

user64354I am playing a rogue who chose the archetype Arcane Trickster, which means I can cast spells. Can I make a normal-range or close-range attack for my main action, and as a bonus action cast a spell that requires 1 action (e.g. chill touch or fire bolt)?

Q: How can a player effectively use Booming Blade in combat?

AndrendireBooming Blade is a fascinating cantrip. Between somewhat murky language and unclear use-cases, there's a lot of confusion among the 5e community about how exactly you're supposed to use the Asmodeus-blasted spell. Booming Blade's description reads as follows: As part of the action used to ca...

@KorvinStarmast Not even the first time it's been called out
Jun 5 at 22:49, by Medix2
Also gosh I wonder if I'll ever stop laughing when I see Please Stop Being Evil and Someone_Evil near each other

@Carcer already did, and I edited it a bit to try and get it to be more focused. I am pretty sure I see what he wants.

yeah, mostly I just want to be able to answer it because there is a section in the Ninth World Guidebook which is explicitly about this

@Carcer Woot, glad to hear that.

1:01 PM

1:53 PM
@Medix2 I'm pretty sure, too, but i'm being a bit wary to dupe hammer it.
but i think you're right and I think i'll hit it with the hammer. Someone else can either hammer it back with an explanation or community can reopen.

I concur with the dupe

@Medix2 Pretty sure it is a dupe in this case because that second question is in fact about Booming Blade, even though it uses generic language in the title.

"what counts as willing movement for booming blade?" is a direct subset of "what counts as willing movement for spells" with no compelling reason that booming blade should be any different

@Carcer Yes, but an answer could demonstrate a reason that it's different.

@MarkWells Shouldn't an answer to the general then point out it will depend on X part of the spell, or the question should clarify that X might matter to single it out from the general (the general also includes that cantrip as one of its examples so it should address it)

1:59 PM
@MarkWells but we know it's not, so we can safely mark it as a duplicate

I don't think the general question is general?

also true, on a closer read, as it does only refer to booming blade

I also misread how that list worked until you pointed it out. Yeah, clear dupe IMO

@MarkWells I feel like at that level, we've got to trust that if an answerer comes along thinking "no, BB is different because of X" they'll comment or flag or drop into chat or post a meta to put eyes on it. We can't worry too much about what might happen, just make sure that if it does happen the structures in place will help facilitate improvement.

Or at least I'm really confused if somebody said "willingly moves" is not equivalent to "willing movement"
@Someone_Evil It's certainly a weirdly ordered list

2:02 PM
(Oh, mooted. Nvm.)

Unrelated but now I'm staring at magic initiate... Can you use a focus when casting spells from it? This has probably been asked but I couldn't find it

Not unless you choose your own class for it (I think)

Weird... Well guess I've got a question then

it's rules-legally a bit ambiguous
a strict reading says no, because the equipment description for focuses specifies that they can be used by certain classes, and knowing spells from magic initiate does not make you that class

I just realized foci say that a class can use them not that they can be used for a class spell list

2:08 PM
If we have got a question on it, it isn't tagged with [dnd-5e] [feats] [equipment] which I think it should be

by the same reading, an eldritch knight can't use an arcane focus
nor an arcane trickster

@Carcer Pfft. Just steal the wizard's wand if you need a focus.

IIRC Rangers flat out don't get one at all

yeah, nothing specified for rangers - they don't even get a ridealong on the druidic focus

@Someone_Evil While we're concatenating tags, if someone wants to ask an [adventurers-league][weapons][character-creation][skills][gm-techniques] question for me to answer, I could knock off five tag-badges in one swell foop =)

2:12 PM
@MarkWells The problem is that only "A sorcerer, warlock, or wizard can use such an item as a spellcasting focus." so EK and AT are left out :(

@Medix2 Ah. I see.

@nitsua60 Time to open a Meta to theorycraft that question /s
I wonder how many AL + GM-techniques questions we even have, sounds rare to me

personally I would always just rule that a focus actually applies to spells from the specific spell list because it's a bit silly to me otherwise
but eh

@Medix2 It's a tough one to wrap one's head around. "How do I manage my new AL player's desire to make a weaponsmithing character not stealing spotlight from their tablemates?"

Oh what, did the AL tag always include DnD in the name?

2:14 PM
@nitsua60 VTC no system tag :p

@Someone_Evil inb4 Nitsua invent "gm-techniques the TTRPG"

<lobs grenade>
[dnd-adventures-league] obviates the need for [dnd-5e] tag
<ducks and runs>

@Medix2 Probably (unless there's a way to see tag renames I'm not aware of)

"How do I support my new player's desire to make weaponsmithing a meaningful part of their character while running AL adventures?"

@Someone_Evil There's one of those thousand unfindable links in the mod-side somewhere that shows a reverse-chrono listing of tag-renames, IIRC. So you could spelunk to see if it'd ever changed. I think.
Greener'd be able to point you to it right-quick.
Or the TL.

2:19 PM
Oh no... Is a spellcasting focus a magic item?

@Medix2 it's powered by the use of spell slots :)

@Medix2 Eh... no(?), never listed as such AFAIK

@Someone_Evil But a +1/2/3 one would be, right? Wait... Are there generic +X foci... To the internet!

I'm finding this and related questions fascinating

Q: Is a puzzle box considered locked?

wz-billingsAs part of some treasure the party I am in found, we found a puzzle box. I am a wizard, and I wanted to use the spell Knock to open it. Knock says: Choose an object that you can see within range. The object can be a door, a box, a chest, a set of Manacles, a padlock, or another object that ...

1 part philosophy and 1 part rules interpretation is a heady cocktail

@AncientSwordRage That's when I go "here, GM, figure it out"

2:25 PM
@Medix2 Well it looks like the GM says "No you ruined my plot"
> I am a wizard, and I wanted to use the spell Knock to open it.
> My DM said that the puzzle box isn't technically "locked"

@Medix2 wand of the war mage is as close as I can think of off the top of my head.

there are generic-ish +thing spell foci in 5e - there weren't in the 3.Xes, IIRC.

If anyone want some statics to wrap their head around, post feedback is apparently part of the 10k tools and I'm not quite sure what the page is saying

(But I only got 4 hrs sleep, so...)

@AncientSwordRage Meanwhile, hand my party a puzzle box they will almost certainly brute-force it (Both meaning to shatter the box and to try every single possible way of opening it)

2:27 PM
@Medix2 It makes me want to make a puzzle box with thousands of locks inside, but only like 8 actualy unlock the box.

ah, nitsua in with the actual name of the item :-)

@LizWeir :*sheepish*_grin:

@AncientSwordRage I'm not sure how it would, in this case. It's a physical puzzle. Unless they're handing you an actual puzzle box at the table, you're going to solve it by saying "my character tries to open the box".

@AncientSwordRage I'm on the "yes, Knock works" camp -- it sounds like the puzzle box is a combination lock with a funny sort of UI to it

@nitsua60 Hmm perhaps my question has no meaning then, ah well

2:29 PM
@Shalvenay yup, I definitely smell the sub-question of 'How do I convince my DM to let me use one of my Class' tools?'

@Someone_Evil It's saying that one subset of our votes break down 65.59% up vs. 34.41% down, the remainder of our votes break down 89.15% up vs. 10.85% down, and in total our votes are 95% up and 5% down.
Looks good to me.

GcL
@Medix2 Staff of the Magi adds to spell attack?

@AncientSwordRage Though this is an interesting angle--in a setting where there are wizards with lock-opening magic, it would make sense for there to be puzzle boxes with countermeasures against it.

@Someone_Evil Woah, I've never seen this

There's an artificer infusion which does some +N to spell thingies IIRC

2:30 PM
@MarkWells Yup it would definitely exist on Kaladesh and on Eberron

@nitsua60 What is registered negative feedback? Delete votes?

I think anon/low reps are asked for feedback of some kind

@GcL I was thinking Thief Rogue or Artificer could use a musical instrument for Wizard spells or something but it might just be an impossible scenario

the Enhanced Arcane Focus infusion is I think identical to the Wand of the War Mage

@Medix2 Wait, whoa. What are they talking about, "feedback"?

2:32 PM
spell attack roll bonus, ignore half cover with spell attacks

I wonder if those are something like vote breakdowns on posts where you've commented/edited/answered?

(+1/+2 depending on level)

When you don't have the rep to vote and still do, it is registered as feedback, but not a vote for scoring purposes.

Aaaaaaaaahhh.

GcL
@Medix2 I would imagine an artificer's setup could involve musical parts. I would expect something more along an accordion or synthesizer with lots of buttons and moving parts.

2:33 PM
Nice little term of art, there.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Where is that definition found?

@GcL That's a good way to get fewer people to be annoyed by artificers: give them an accordion =\

GcL
@nitsua60 Better than bagpipes.

@GcL No idea. Try downvoting something on a site you don't have the rep for it yet and I believe it uses the term.

I... respectfully disagree. I, actually, have a soft spot for both of those notoriously-obnoxious instruments.

2:34 PM
artificer casting off musical instrument is doable RAW - Pipes of Haunting are an infusion option and any item you've infused can be used as a spellcasting focus

GcL
@nitsua60 No accounting for taste.

have fun <3

@Someone_Evil It's part of 10k and it's not even listed there :(

GcL
Haunting pipes sound like bagpipes.

... also. Horn of Blasting, AKA the Vuvuzela of Wrath

2:35 PM
Hmmm, clicking the "feedback" button brings me to Meta, interesting

@GcL FWIW, pineapple's also my favorite pizza topping.

@GcL I refuse to answer a question with mismatched quotation marks.

@nitsua60 I'm still waiting for GcL to finish the question.

Aren't we all REPL bots?

I'm actually a script in a tailor-made language running on a modified version of Babbage's difference engine.
mechanical computing is where it's at.

I'm a moose?

@LizWeir Wow, never thought I'd hear Babbage's name ever again

@nitsua60 Pineapple FTW!

@Medix2 I have just the right combination of tendency to remember names and tendency to hang with the kind of people who mention Ada Lovelace as often as possible to keep him in mind ;-)

Q: How do I help newbies generate characters without being in person?

Bardic WizardBackground: I am about to start running a virtual D&D5e game over Zoom (I don't have a choice of platform) through the local library. I have invited four of my friends to join, and only one has ever played before. None of them have the 5e books or even know the basics of generating characters. ...

I want to ask this OP ^^ whether it's important to even create characters (cf. starter set pregens, for example), but I can't figure out how to do so without verging into answer-in-comment.

oh, that's an awkward one

I'm somewhat confused why the answer isn't "generate characters using zoom"

It sounds like the real issue there is that only one person has any of the books.

A zoom call is quite a different environment to an in-person meet

@LizWeir Agreed, but there doesn't seem to be any other option besides not generating characters; or I'm simply missing something here

3:21 PM
in a bunch of minor ways that add up to it being worth asking if there's a better way - I know I'd be happier with a text-chat approach for this sort of thing, because I get fatigued by long zoom calls in ways that don't apply to text
I can see a few iterations of possible approach - group or individual zoom calls, group or individual text chat, good ways to get the ideas flowing when you can't use your offline social habits - that mean experience in doing this sort of thing is valuable

@LizWeir Ah that's a fair point a sort of "What has gone well and not well in trying to gen character without being able to meet in-person; how were issues you encountered solved/fixed"

yeah!

GcL
3:41 PM
@LizWeir We use discord, google sheets, and rolz.org to run our table top remotely these days. It works pretty well.
No obligate staring at each other's mugs while gaming. Looking at faces is mentally taxing.
It would be nice if there were an option in video conference to "look at a person" and have the technological implementation more closely match the in person effects.

Q: Do +1 magic items affect each one of multiple dice rolled for damage?

DynobombMy DM gave me a magic knife that does 3d6 damage and has +1 on attack rolls. Does that mean I would roll 3d6 and then add 1 to the final result, or would I add 1 for each d6 roll?

@GcL I think having our faces looked at is mentally taxing, too.

GcL
@MarkWells Like thinking someone is looking at you or knowing someone is looking at you, but you can't see them?

@GcL Or even when you can. Two weeks ago I stopped turning my camera on for work meetings, and I'm amazed how much less stressful it is.

@MarkWells Ha! The peak of 1997 technology. "this system measures skin resistance level by placing " conrtrnt current across two electrodes andmeasuring the resistance encountered by the current at a rate of two samples per second..."
I used to love that paranormal experimentation stuff. As studies go, that one wasn't that bad. Definitely would have benefited from a larger sample. I wonder if they have any of the original raw and processed data still archived. It was well before the push for reproducible research, but some people held onto that stuff.

It would not be a hard study to repeat, especially with current technology. Build the sensor as a Bluetooth device that pairs to a smartphone, mail it out, and the subject never needs to leave their house.
(Though, given the results of the original study, that might not count as a valid replication.)

GcL
@MarkWells I get the impression that funding for extra sensory perception is pretty limited.
The statistical analysis selected in that paper seems dubious as well.

Does the CIA no longer fund research like this? That's a shame.

Reading the analysis of the experiment it was inconclusive at best. Characterizing it as evidence of ESP is a reach. They summed the EDA measurements for stare vs non-stare.... which is a peculiar. They were getting 15 reads per trial and doing 8 trails per subject with a decent randomization. They had enough data to do a more robust analysis, but they didn't.
Eh... all of this is better placed in the Elemental Plane of Math. Needs teleportation.

@HotRPGQuestions I think what that DM is missing is asking, "are beating those skill checks fun for the players?" Do they get a feeling of success from it and does the caster with guidance feel like they're providing value?
Because it reads like "boo hoo. The players are wining too much."

@GcL Players winning too much can be a problem, if it's making the game boring.

GcL
@MarkWells Which is an actual problem. The game is boring to the players not "I find this very annoying"
There's a bunch of things my players like that I don't. Luckily, as DM, there's a whole bunch of other stuff for me to do and enjoy... having a few pet peeves present that the players actually like is a pretty good trade.
At least two of them have to suffer through not having an absolute morality/alignment available for the universe... so probably fair trades?

10:41 PM
I think I've been silently houseruling alignment away for at least a year now and nobody seems to notice.

GcL
It was a subtle joke for the DM when I was a young player to mess with us around alignment. E.g. discovering the motivations of "evil" creatures the PCs were sent to destroy, or discovering the "enemies" were just occupying some land the "good guys" wanted.
Two of my players still point out "but they're evil... right?" now and again. The other three kind of look side eyed at them now days.

"I don't know, are they? You're the cleric, you tell me."

11:17 PM
@MarkWells I think 5e fairly silently houseruled alignment away, and not many people complain.

@NautArch I only think there's one spell or ability that still uses it.
eh... two. Conjure Fey also has the clause about alignment

11:28 PM
@MarkWells I was gonna post another message on that homebrew class question but I have opted to avoid causing a help-pile
@GcL There's quite a few random things that depend on alignment
Mostly attunement requirements, but also a few monsters, gods, and the talismans of pure evil/good, and I don't remember which spells...

@Medix2 Sprites can detect it.

spirit guardians, ceremony, glyph of warding (or any spell that you can have activate when a Good creature walks by or similar); I guess also conjure celestial, conjure fey, modify memory, and Nystul's magic aura

@GcL it's so ancillar to really not be of import. So I don't import.
Anymore.

@PeterCooperJr. I'm hearing good things about Quest as a kid-approachable introductory TRPG.

I did run a short arc when our neutral/good characters were clearly acting evil.
That didn't get too good ofa reception.

11:45 PM
@NautArch Some of the stories that emerge have no non-evil, from someone's point of view, courses of action. I am usually highly entertained by the inventiveness and resources my players put forth to minimize deleterious impact.

@GcL True, but we were really being pretty evil.
Objectively :)
I was also, not gonna lie. We were going down a dark path, so I wanted to see how dark they'd get.
and they went dark.

@Medix2 What I'd be interested to see is for those spells to interact with Ideals or Bonds, instead. Like, now that there's a place on your character sheet to write "Avenge the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi" as a thing that drives you, can you summon spirit guardians that take the form of Obi-Wan?

and speaking of evil, about to head back into the Doomvault.
