12:04 AM
@BESW I would concur with that

As a matter of curiosity, why do some people put links [text](link) and others [text][#] and a note at the bottom with [#]: link
like why do some people prefer one over the other

If you use the link button in the answer editor it builds the second form for you.
At least it does in Chrome.

@Himitsu_no_Yami The first one is easier.

then why would some people edit [text](link) and change it to the latter

@Himitsu_no_Yami I think it's technically more correct.

12:07 AM
@Himitsu_no_Yami [text](link) is easier to write and better for copy paste. [text][#] [#]:link is cleaner to read and better if you want to reuse a link more than one in a post.

Also, if you use the built in editor to add links to an answer, it will automatically use [text][#] format

@linksassin I'm not sure I buy the "cleaner" argument, personally - I'm never a fan of storing contextual information separate to its context.

@linksassin Personally, I disagree with the cleaner to read bit. It means I have to see the [#] scroll down in the answer (if it's a particularly long one) and check where it goes to if I'm editing

@Himitsu_no_Yami Jinx XD

compared to having the link right next to the text it's attached to

12:10 AM
@Himitsu_no_Yami I stopped using [text](link) because it made it more difficult to reuse or edit a link. It also meant I couldn't look at all the links in a single location to make sure I referenced the right things
Like if I spend an answer talking about X thing, I can look at the list of links and realize I never actually linked to the rules on X thing
@Himitsu_no_Yami If you're wondering where a link goes, can't you just click the link?

@Himitsu_no_Yami If you are writing a long paragraph with lots of links the []() format can get pretty cluttered and it is harder to spot typos or grammar mistakes.

@Medix2 But if you talk about X, Y, and Z, looking at the list won't tell you whether you linked the right links in the right places.

@Medix2 when editing not really

@Miniman And when looking at a paragraph full of [text](link) it becomes harder, at least for me

@Medix2 To each their own, I guess.

12:14 AM
@Miniman Yeah that's definitely the correct answer here

Now to wait for the person who edited my answer to pop in, realize I'm asking because of their edit, and respond. (tbf I am just curious about different people's takes on it, it doesn't really bother me or anything)

Yeah I want the answer on that too, maybe even open a Meta somewhere on if one has some meaningful benefit

In other news, I think I might be doling out too much magic item swag but oh well, I'm not taking it back now lol

@Himitsu_no_Yami Assuming you're talking about D&D 5e, quantity usually isn't an issue. As long as none of the items are too powerful, it shouldn't really matter much.

@Miniman well they're mostly uncommon, there's a bit of rare but no more powerful IMO than the uncommon
it also depends on what you consider "too powerful"

12:24 AM
Does 5e have anything like 4e's treasure bundles?

Not familiar with 4e but 5e's DMG has an entire chapter on treasure

@BESW I instantly typed "no", but it does technically have guidelines that are supposed to accomplish the same thing.

@BESW It has treasure and magic item tables one could roll on for hoards but... not exactly the same

Every level has a list like that, of the kinds of treasure the party should get over the course of that level.
If your party is smaller or larger, you drop fewer or more magic items.
And once every five to ten levels, you drop an artifact which has its own set of rules and eventually leaves the party after they've either made it very happy or very sad.

@BESW Yeah. See, the 5e guidelines are more like "roll d100, if you roll a 1 they get enough copper pieces to buy half a pair of pants, if you roll 99 they get a jetski each".

12:30 AM
@Miniman Gnoooooomes.
And you can roll for random treasures within those parameters, but the book encourages you to have the players make wishlists and you pick from those instead.

@BESW Imagine your surprise.

(The magic items are in the PHB, not the DMG!)

There's a recommended level at which you should have each rarity of magic items but rarity doesn't mean a whole lot

Yeah, 4e introduced rarity partway through its run and I promptly ignored it.

Besides that I guess there's the "Starting At Higher Level" section

12:34 AM
As long as I'm trying to be fair, they did have a second go at it in their equivalent of a PHB2, and those guidelines are at least not purely luck-based.
I don't have the hands-on experience to say whether they're good or not.

Ben
Morning all

Practically speaking, 4e's treasure parcel system means that every level drops [# of PCs] - 1 magic items between 1 and 5 levels higher than the party's level, and enough gold to buy another item at the party's level (or slightly less gold than that if the GM thinks they need a lot of healing potions just to survive). (They usually don't, even if the party doesn't have a dedicated healer.)

Ben
4e really does translate well into video game functionality lol

And you wanna upgrade your three main slots every five levels (weapon/focus for attack bonus, neck/back for non-AC defensive bonus, armor for AC defensive bonus), in order to keep up with the monsters' stats--which is the point where if I was gonna re-build 4e I'd just say "forget linear numerical progression it's just Red Queen bookkeeping, magic items are only for the nifty extra features they give you."

1 hour later…
Ben
1:50 AM
Parenting conundrum: At schools they sometimes give kids "donation boxes" to take home and collect change to build up a "donation" for a cause. (local church, environment, etc).
So one of the boys has been stealing money from their mum's bag, to put into these donation boxes

Not a donation.

I think "stealing is wrong" is probably a good start for parenting in this case.

Ben
Stealing is wrong - but giving money for a good caused is a good thing.
I think @BESW's point is probably a better one - explain what a "donation" actually is

Giving the money isn't the problem and I'm not sure there's any need to discuss it :3

In a setting that places primary value on physical ends, rather than ethical processes, it's easy to wind up with "but she would have donated anyway" or similar justifications.
I like to think about how a donation is valuable for the person making the donation, not just the end recipient.

1:56 AM
^^

Ben
Yeah

This is deep in our parenting veins. "We do something nice for X not because it's good for them, but because it's good for us." "We forgive not to make X feel better, but to make ourself feel better."

It's a whole process-of-community thing.

"We moderate the site not for the users, but for ourselves."

See also: truthfulness, trustworthiness.

1:57 AM
Hmm... that one doesn't work as well....

Kids often have trouble understanding ownership and consent. For that matter, it's a problem for many adults too.

@nitsua60 If it were my kid, it'd probably be an opportunity for the next part in an ongoing conversation about truthfulness and trustworthiness as capacity to discern, value, and uphold truth itself.

Ben
@nitsua60 well, I mean... in a round about way...

@Ben (Really, I was just trying to land the joke while not getting too pulled away from current project.)

Ben
Badum-tss

2:05 AM
Speaking of which, I'm really growing to enjoy editing audio of conversations. Cutting down pauses and trimming "umm"s and eradicating mouth noises has the same sort of monotonous fulfillment to it as, say, mowing the lawn or ironing sheets.

Ben
Thanks for the help. We'll have to think about it because the youngest one (6yo) is a bit too "innocent" or "pure" to get a proper grasp on the situation at the moment. We'll have to keep it simple. The 8yo on the other hand is a sponge.

(However, I'm not sure how I feel about the realization that I start basically every question "I'm curious: question question question.")

Ben
@nitsua60 Just finished "Midnight Gospel" on Netflix, which is kinda like that. It is an... odd show.
It's like an animated podcast

@Ben I don't know it--what's the one-sentence description?

Ben
> The Midnight Gospel was created by Duncan Trussell and Pendleton Ward – it is a mash-up of the latter's 2010-18 animated series Adventure Time with the podcast The Duncan Trussell Family Hour, in which Trussell interviews guests about their life philosophies and meditation practices

2:12 AM
@Ben I know Ruhi Grade 1 has modules on truthfulness and trustworthiness aimed at 6-to-8s.
But I'm not sure how useful they'd be without the accompanying training in theory and praxis.

Ben
Yeah. I think there are some more fundamental issues that need to be resolved first.
@nitsua60 I was going to say actually that I wonder if it's just me; but I feel like the spelling of the "rim shot" ("badum-tss" as I spell it) is similar but less focused than the "gif vs jif" argument. Lol

Ben
2:28 AM
@BESW just had a post flagged?

What?

Ben
this one in NAB.
Came up as a flagged post

Heh.

Ben
I was surprised. Lol

I replied to the same post in that channel a few hours ago :thumbsup:

2:36 AM
A twitter thread by Lucas Rolim about their minimalist OSR game Pacts and Blades.

@Ben Yeah I was confused too. But any further conversation about it should probably be in Not a Bar.

@BESW hmm, looks tasty ...

1 hour later…
GcL
4:00 AM
@Ben Someone must have mistaken the flag for a star.

Ben
...maybe?

GcL
Hopefullly?
How's the diablo like system you're developing going?

Ben
It doesn't matter. I'd say enough people invalidated it
@GcL Good!

GcL
Corruption/Resistance, yes?
That's good to hear. Have you play tested it at all yet?

Ben
Not yet. I have the core concept down, just need to specify some things, but I am yet to add one last thing.

GcL
4:04 AM
What's the one last thing?

Ben
Currently it's all "afflictions", and downhill development... But I want to add a reward for critical success rolls.

GcL
Also, have you thought about some one shots to test the concepts? Like a brief intro into characters that have points in either or are at a tipping point?

Ben
Temporary boons or something like that. Maybe a one off use or a temporary effect

GcL
One offs are nice. Especially if you manifest them as something that goes in an inventory so it stays in the players sheet and mind.
Like, don't you have that glowing eggshell of justice on your belt just begging to be crushed?
or the singing coin of annoyance waling to be spent?
FFS just smoke em' if you got em! I didn't write the crap into the game for you to sit on it.

Ben
Ohhhh that's a good idea. Numenera had an "odd item" thing - one guy had an indestructible glass rose, I had a blue egg that negated anyone's sense of smell within 5 feet
Could do something like that :D
Fun and useful

GcL
4:08 AM
Potion of Thing you're supposed to use
If I don't give it to my players as a tangible thing, they forget about it.

Ben
Expendable Item of Usefulness

GcL
Ha! yes!

Ben
It's also handy to do that rather than altering their PC temporarily

GcL
Also easier to save the state. I had an insanity counter and honor counter campaign. Tracking points in those was a pain in the butt, because they weren't on standard sheets. Changed to items for sorrow and glee in the most recent... players hold onto those trinkets more carefully than magic weapons.
Actually burned actions in combat to ensure the sorrow trinkets were safely stowed. It was touching, albeit sad.

Ben
@GcL Was that Punintentional..? :P

GcL
4:13 AM
No. Damn it.

Ben
> Punintentional: The act of intentionally or unintentionally integrating a pun into a sentence. Roll a d6 - 1-3 is intentional, 4-6 is unintentional.

GcL
Well, if you ever get to the point you want a play test, I've got myself and four others that would stay up late to make a night of it.

Ben
Nice :D

GcL
How's the moderator vote going for you?
Any old comments you're planning on editing with your new black diamond credit card?
Maybe a new addition to the profile you've been putting off expanding?
A fancy rolls20 royce?

4:29 AM
I saw "Diablo like system" and my biggest question (no need to answer of course) is how are you doing inventory?

GcL
@Medix2 You hollow out a leg. Extra space for a club if the character's name is Wirt.

@GcL I had a prostectic leg save the day in a game of Dread once.

@linksassin Was it your own?

GcL
@linksassin Wait. What? How?

@Medix2 In game yeah. Dread characters are built from a questionaire. The DM put on mine "You have a prosthetic limb? Which limb and what is special about it?" I answered that is was my left legs and it had integrated speakers and a disco light.

GcL
4:33 AM
@linksassin I feel like that's already a win, but do go on how that saved the day.

End game saw me detach my leg, light up the party system and throw it as a distraction as I limped to the 'safety' of the escape pod.

GcL
@linksassin So the "system was down" and "doo doo da doot doot" while you Cheated your way to victory?

@GcL Not sure I understand the reference. Ah there's a link....

GcL
Yeah. The old flash from 2002 doesn't work anymore

Ben
@Medix2 Well, it's not exactly a "Diablo system". It's a 5e campaign based on the Diablo 1 game, with a "Corruption System" for added flavour
And it has been a long, long time in the making

4:40 AM
@Ben I always laugh when seeing things like "Diablo 1" "Portal 1" "Warcraft 1"
@Ben I'm sure it's all the better for it and I wish you the best of luck as it continues

Ben
Original versions did include weapon swapping, durability, and functions like that, but it got quickly out of hand. So I just reverted to telling the story of the D1 "campaign" in 5e, and then added the Corruption system on top, which again went through many revisions and iterations
@Medix2 ?

GcL
@Medix2 It's pretty neat. If you're up late, or live upside down, I suggest volunteering to be play tested upon.
@Ben You're old an should feel old about remembering old things, oldy. /S

Ben
Haha

@Ben Just when a series has the same name as the first game and so people end up having to differentiate them

Ben
Well, DS1 - Is it Dead Space, Or Dark Souls?

GcL
4:43 AM
@Medix2 Sometimes the sequel is better than the original before it gets remastered

Ben
:P

@Ben It's the original Nintendo DS, duh

Ben
Hahaha

@GcL Live upside down? Are you asking if Ben is Australian?

GcL
I've got a lovely acrylic painting of the original Nintendo controller. My nieces referred to it as a "painting of an antique"
@linksassin Or a kiwi.

Ben
4:45 AM
@GcL I'll take that statement, and raise you a Biker Mice From Mars Original Series

GcL
Actually, I've an affection for kiwis

Ben
I'm not upside down... maybe you are...

I'm probably allergic to kiwi skin

Ben
I cen do a pretty good kiwi eccent eh

GcL
@Ben SNES, no?

4:47 AM
@Ben Exactly, we're not upside down. We just use a different reference geometry.

Ben
@GcL the tv series started in '93

@linksassin I'm actually kataside ana

GcL
@Ben It's pretty good, but how about a hand stand contest on the roof edge of a hostel in Barcelona after a few shots of irish whiskey?
@Ben Wow. Missed that, but awesome.

Ben
I am so happy with my Last Chance Garage hoodie :D

GcL
It reminds me of the game Full Throttle.
Awwww heck... turns out they remastered that and it's on Steam.
Well.... there goes $15 and a dozen hours of my time.

Ben
4:51 AM
Well invested :D

GcL
Yeah, but damn I'm a sucker for it.

Sometimes I can be patient and wait for a game to be on sale. And sometime I really can't XD

Ben
I know the feeling lol

GcL
Pulls on the adolescent heart strings. Remember a time when Usenet and Gopher were things!

GcL
@V2Blast what's your timezone? You seem ominpresent.

@V2Blast Hexblade dips are now mandatory for all characters.

Ben
@GcL I'm AEST. @V2Blast is ATTZ
All the Time Zones

@Himitsu_no_Yami The former is easy to do by hand, and also how I'm used to doing it in Markdown for ages. The latter is how the linking button (or Ctrl+L shortcut) built into the SE interface does it automatically. I used to do the former, but the latter is so much easier (and makes it easy to reference the same link multiple times if needed)
@GcL EDT
I just have a terrible sleep schedule
lol
I usually wake up in the afternoon and go to sleep at like 6 am

GcL
@V2Blast That explains it! Your offset just seems to be coincident at times that were difficult to place.

5:15 AM
Does anyone happen to know if, wrt screen readers, using - or = for headers make a difference?

@Himitsu_no_Yami and to follow up on this, I only sometimes change it (in others' posts, anyway) for consistency if I'm adding a relevant link or two, because it's way easier for me to hit Ctrl+L to add those relevant links. I don't think either linking style is always superior, so an edit just to change that would be bad, but I do find it easier to read. As for double-checking what links point to - I just hover over the link in the preview below the post :P
@gszavae I don't think so, since markdown itself isn't what's being shown to the reader. oh, wait, are you asking "does it matter if I use ---- or ====?" (I think those create different levels of headers)

GcL
@gszavae I had to use a screen reader for a month. I know that # and ## get jumped to differently as the # makes H1 headers. What does - or = get emitted as?
Also, I recommend Orca as a reference screen reader since is the lowest common denominator for a number of compliance implementation and labs.

Ben

Relevant section of the editing help page: rpg.stackexchange.com/editing-help#headers
@Himitsu_no_Yami (If it is me you mean, if you ask me to stop doing it, I will :P)

GcL
@V2Blast Good find. The === header gets jumped to as a new page or answer. The --- gets jumped to as a section. My experience was that I like answers to start with H1. Although the vote option gets read before the header. So SE isn't particularly screen reader friendly for me.

5:20 AM
@GcL looks like they become <h1> and <h2>

@nitsua60 It's okay, half the people on the site start their question with "So..." :P
@GcL IIRC, question titles themselves start with h1? at least, I recall reading that somewhere

@GcL So... use = for the top line then - for the subheadings?

GcL
@gszavae Yeah. H1 is great for answers since it was easy for me to jump to H1s. The basic advance went to vote, then header order... which was kind of a pain in the ass.

@V2Blast Correct, question titles are h1

GcL
@gszavae As long as you don't do an H1 in a question, it wasn't too confusing for me.

5:22 AM
here's the post I was thinking of:
68
Q: Use real headers instead of fake headers

SevenSidedDieIt's a somewhat common habit at RPG.se to use bold sentences to make the appearance of a header for a section of text, rather than using our existing header formatting. This is probably because it's a common hack elsewhere on the Internet where heading formatting isn't available, and because the ...

GcL
@V2Blast Yup. That was my experience. I only got messed up when there was an H1 in the question body.

It looks like most people use - for their answers, perhaps for the same reason I do (it's easier to type)

one answer made a case against using H1s in answers, though it seems to have been quite controversial:
2
A: Use real headers instead of fake headers

KevinBe careful with level 1 headers The title of the question is an H1 (source: I just checked), and the entire question should be subordinate to ("below") the title. If the question contains a separate H1 in its body text, then this semantic relationship will fail. Putting an H1 at the top of an ...

GcL
@V2Blast Yeah mixing and matching headers and bold is a pain for screen readers.

@gszavae I just type a number of ##s at the start of the header line instead
makes it possible to use h3 (and h4 onwards, but those end up looking a bit weird)

GcL
5:25 AM
@V2Blast Yeah ran into that as well. H1 gets jumped to as a new page-ish thing. Hard to describe but H1's are convenient to jump to if they exist. I was using vim bindings, so when I hit something I didn't expect I jumped back to the top and stepped through a different way.

I'm really glad to have heard of screen reader and header synergy. I mean, I like semantic clues anyway but it's really good to know this stuff

It doesn't feel like SE does much to help people do the right thing with regard to screen readers. I remember before seeing them use code tags for inline quotes in an example :/

GcL
Long story short, the internet is a pain in the ass if you don't have full visual faculties.

I feel like "It doesn't feel like SE does much to help people do the right thing" is an accurate statement in general :P

GcL
@gszavae Few places provide good heuristics for screen readers. Which is really too bad, because if it's good for screen readers, it's just good organization.

Ben
5:28 AM
It might depend on the complexity of the answer, but that said, if your relying on h3's you're probably over elaborating

@gszavae code tag overuse is a major pain, yes. Especially on Stack Overflow. People were grinding up their edit counts by making every half-technical word an inline code snippet...

GcL
@kviiri We had an accessibility czar that made the developers use screen readers for their top ten site for a month. It was an enlightening experience.

Ben
2 sentence paragraphs > wall of text

GcL
@Ben That's like the cantrip wall of text.

@GcL A monarch I am proud to acknowledge

GcL
5:29 AM
I think V2 had a level 9 WoT recently.

@gszavae Unfortunately, a lot of that wouldn't get fixed even if the asking and editing pages mentioned those

GcL
@kviiri They lamented they weren't actually issued a taser while the public safety department staff were.

@GcL I spent a while helping "debugging" scream readers

Ben
> Wall of text: you confuse and aggravate an enemy. They must roll an Int save it be stunned for 1 round

@GcL The accessibility Okhrana can do the tazing in their stead though.

GcL
5:31 AM
@Ben This one is the first I didn't use my reaction to downvote.

@GcL Hahaha. Yeah :P

Ben
@GcL Wow.... wooooow

GcL
@kviiri I wish there were secret sysadmins to sequester developers until the accessibility demands were satisfied! Unfortunately, the minority of users get the minority of attention... despite the utility of paying attention to their needs paying exponential dividends.

nits originally said "There's no blanket rule against scores over 20", and I thought "surely that can't be true". He was initially unconvinced by the bits and pieces of evidence I found, so I felt a compulsion to dig deeper...
eventually it was 5 am

@V2Blast And that's the story about how Medix2 got multiple moderators to stay up late writing walls of text about bags of beans

GcL
5:35 AM
@V2Blast Sure the rule are fine and all. I was mostly impressed by the order of presentation and how well one section led to the next. Also, I was aware of the conclusion when I started in on the read. It fired on all cylinders.
@Medix2 I blame Medix and Medix2 for that. Usually it's cats. This time, it's those two.

IIRC I accidentally made two accounts and they got merged into this one so I'm actually BOTH

GcL
@Medix2 Double the punishment!

Ben
Well, while it is a lot of text, it's not necessarily the "Wall of Text". I was thinking more along the lines of a 17-sentence paragraph.

GcL
@Ben Maybe a fortification of text? Berm of text? Mound of typography? Hillock of glyphs?

Ben
That's more like "Text Tsunami". More of a 7th level spell - only the more experienced spellcasters can pull that off.

5:38 AM
@Medix2 When you all behave yourselves too well, some of us find ourselves with too much free time... ;)

GcL
I feel like the lower level castings are clumsier. Like, they're impressive in force, but not really modifying my reality or view of it.

I meant to ask, @V2Blast How in the world do you find these seemingly random posts to edit? (I could easily be missing a clear pattern)

Ben
When the world is quiet it helps you focus ;)

GcL
I now want to make a "subductive bard" question about optimizing a bard build to draw opponents underground or submerge them in illusionatory terrain.

@GcL Step1: somehow get a burrow speed

GcL
5:41 AM
@Medix2 The filter is pretty simple. It's all posts.
2

@Medix2 Step 3: profit?

GcL
@Adeptus subduction.

Q: How do I determine multiclassing stats for an Artificer

Niv MizzetI am making a character for a campaign that is starting soon. The character is going to start out as a Cleric (War Domain) and will multiclass with a Artificer (Battlesmith). I have looked at multiclassing rules, but I am having trouble making heads or tails of it for a multi-class involving a ...

Step 3: subduction
Step 4: profit?

GcL
@Adeptus For a prospector, subduction is profit.

5:59 AM
@GcL So, you're saying a subductive bard has good prospects?

GcL
@Adeptus Ha! I think that's the best way of phrasing it.

Inductive bard

GcL
@kviiri Highly charged subject?

While I have some 5e people around... I've been looking at removing attribute bonuses from races, and just giving all races +2 & +1 to place wherever. This puts mountain dwarves off balance, because they usually have a total +4. So I was thinking of giving them a "half-feat" (without the attribute +1) - maybe heavy armor proficiency? Or a choice from a few? Do you think that would be balanced?

@Medix2 It's mostly just stuff I come across in the regular process of browsing that I then see an improvement it can be made to

Ben
6:08 AM
@Adeptus Punintentional

@GcL Doesn't work with all cookware though

@Adeptus Nah, their usual abilities make them unusually strong, so reducing them to +2/+1 will make them better balanced, not worse.

@Adeptus to be honest, I think they're pretty balanced even without the extra +1 (i.e. even if the +2 is changed to +1)
what Miniman said
:P

GcL
@Adeptus I have a couple players that choose stuff for the mechanical aspect and ignore the setting implications. E.g. choosing warforged in Eberron and then having to deal with being treated as property. Or choosing changeling and dealing with being untrusted or threatened with death for revealing their true identity outside the party.

@GcL "Being treated as property"? What?

GcL
6:11 AM
I really found the changeling choice neat recently. It gave some players good stories to explore having a close circle of friends to be their true selves with while fearing retribution from society.... which mirrors the real life experience of a couple other players... which has fed back into the other players pushing those story lines. It's been very good all around.

@Adeptus I would question whether this question really matters. Maybe it makes mountain dwarves unbalanced, but it would do that to quite a small amount, do your players really care that much? Changing to have chosen bonuses changes the balance a lot. It's going to be unbalanced, but that's probably fine.

GcL
@Miniman Warforged were property until the Treaty of Thranehold. So up until two years ago, the warforged were seen as golems essentially. For all their game mechanic advantages, the characters have to content with a society that's just recently seen to their personhood. It's a shock to the min-maxer players... but not a bad one.
In combat the characters are mechanically great... in role play there are difficulties they didn't foresee having to overcome.

> While the first warforged were mindless automatons, House Cannith devoted vast resources to improving these steel soldiers. An unexpected breakthrough produced sapient soldiers, giving rise to what some have only grudgingly accepted as a new species. Warforged are made from wood and metal, but they can feel pain and emotion. Built as weapons, they must now find a purpose beyond war. A warforged can be a steadfast ally, a cold-hearted killer, or a visionary in search of meaning.
for reference, from the start of the race description
(I'm not too familiar with Eberron lore myself)

Like being a man... a dragon man... and then having to help people that live in thatched roof COTTAGES!

@GcL Don't get me wrong, I know there are prejudices against warforged. But by the sounds of it, you might be taking it a bit far.

@GcL I think we need to summon @trogdor for this conversation

GcL
@Miniman Forcing min-maxers to role play is never too far.

I've toyed with the idea of playing a warforged that's a "tank" (in MMORPG terms). I thought I'd name him Sherman...

@Miniman Uhhh... I don't think the issue has anything to do with "forcing min-maxers to roleplay", but rather to do with "roleplaying something reminiscent of slavery".

Ben
@Adeptus I have the opposite situation :P

GcL
6:17 AM
@Miniman Also one of the players was a socialist... so the implications for the work force and economic impacts were interesting to the people at the table. I generally avoid getting too deep into economic modeling, but when the players like it... R.

@V2Blast I wasn't the one who said it, and I was planning on steering well clear of that particular issue.

GcL
@V2Blast I absolutely drew from the US post civil war reconstruction era. History provides some fascinating stories to explore especially when there are fantastical and magical solutions that the players can effect on the surrounding environment.

@V2Blast Perhaps that's less of an issue of "were warforged really treated that way?" and more of a "make sure your players are comfortable".

GcL
@gszavae Which would be a concern for a pick up game or lfg situation. I don't play with people I haven't known well for a decade or more... so less of an issue for my tables.

For those that missed it - My DM is in the Cavalry in the Australian Army, and has recently been re-deployed. My character, Doug Ironhands, was so brutal in combat that we often used gifs of tanks as analogies to describe his combat proficiency. So, now that he is the drvier of another new tank, he named it "Doug" after my PC

@GcL You've known them for 10+ years, and you're still in "I think you made choices for reasons I don't like" territory?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Offensive body detected, potentially bad keyword in body (44): making a seductive bard? by Kayley on rpg.SE (@Rubiksmoose)

@GcL It's always a concern all the time. Perhaps even the number 2 concern behind safety. But I understand the sentiment, I'm sure you and your players are comfortable enough to communicate and you know enough to avoid problematic topics.

GcL
@Miniman Nope. This is the 2nd campaign in 5e Eberron. The current warforged players choose the race specifically for the mechanical benefits.

@GcL Yeah, but it doesn't exactly sound like you're okay with that.

GcL
6:25 AM
@gszavae There's topics that are avoided for my players. Some of them are even aware of those topics.
@Miniman I'm very interested. I pander to both my min-maxers and my role players. E.g. one of the players loves to trounce hordes of opponents and I like to factor in situations where there is an endless combat against such a force that needs to be held off while a puzzle or diplomatic situation is resolved.

@gszavae Indeed, this was what I meant

GcL
Throw in a surprise egg timer or chess ticker and it really ratchets up the suspense.
@gszavae Trading gold for sentient creatures who have little experience or choice other than to go with the orders is pretty close. I like the players and the story steering toward rewarding and going off the main plot to improve the world for warforged. You might be surprised what fun organizing a parade for recognition of warforged rights can be... especially with a slightly unhinged illusionist gnome.

Ben
Wow that took some effort haha. I tried to post that comment on the Bard question 3 times. The first was my own fault, the second was because the question got closed/deleted, and the third was because I ran out of room haha

@V2Blast huh?
sorry I was kinda busy with my cat and then with some kitchen chores
what's going on?
ooooh I see
look some people just want to burn the countryside in peace without their lineage being disparaged in song across the whole span of time alright? :P

6:41 AM
@trogdor Haha, just a bit of fun :D

Ben
Unrelated, but I think I need to update my "Ben" list. Just searched the transcript for something I posted, and there is at least 20 "Bens" to choose from

Ben-ception
@Ben Roll a Ben-d20

GcL
@Ben So when that's complete, it's a "Ben there. Done that." list?

@GcL There's actually a game by that exact name
a video game, that is
Ben There, Dan That! is a point and click adventure game developed by Zombie Cow Studios (now known as Size Five Games). It is freeware and was released on July 14, 2008 for Windows.The game was positively received by critics, who enjoyed the game's humor but criticized its short length and lack of music. Two sequels have been released: Time Gentlemen, Please! in 2009 and Lair of the Clockwork God in 2020. == Gameplay == The game puts players in control of two characters named Ben and Dan, styled after the game's creators. They must complete inventory-based puzzles in order to unlock door...

GcL
Aw Heck.. now I'm obligated to go down that rabbit hole. Oh there's a recent sequel... I don't have to build a Windows 8 VM.

@V2Blast no sweat whatsoever XD

Optimist: the cup is half full

Me: is it coffee?

@Ben An engineer is hanging out at a friend's house. "Hey, could you do me a favor and bring me a glass of water? There should be a glass on the counter," asks the friend.

The engineer goes to the kitchen and sees the glass, upturned. "I can't fill this," he says. "It's got no opening."

The friend comes to the kitchen, lifts the glass, and points inside while giving our engineer a stern, exasperated look.

"It's even worse than I thought," the engineer muses. "Not only one can't fill it but the water wouldn't stay in because it has no bottom!"

History does provide a lot of ideas, but I have an impression that when it comes to the topic of slavery, there's a trend towards taking ideas from a very narrow time and place in history, and ignoring opportunities to use anything else. There are many historical segments - Greek, Aztec, Chinese, Soviet etc. - that handled it differently than in USA, but those conceptions tend to be overlooked, and instead portrayal near-always leans towards the USAish, even if 'historical' circumstances of the setting wouldn't naturally lead to it being that way.

The Asians Represent Podcast has been doing a very deep dive into D&D's Oriental Adventures book, focusing on the AD&D edition but also looking at the 3.5 version.
Part 8 dropped a couple days ago; each part is about 2 hours long.
I especially like the episodes where they've got a lot of guests from various places.
(Also, a lot of these people are people I more or less know now and that's really wild.)

oof. morning team

Oof.
Anyone who donates at least $10 to help POCinTTRPGS get out of an abusive situation, can DM a screenshot of the receipt to Dee Pennyway and get a ton of awesome Mnemonic games. He's a good guy and they're good games!

@Medix2 I may be able to play Warcraft I again if I find the disk...
@V2Blast I never use H1 in answers. The highest I go is H2
@Ben On CSE I just vote to delete WoT answers. Or report them as very low quality.

For any of you who have read the Black Company Chronicles by Glen Cook, I am trying to put Raven into a 5e build. (Insofar as Raven is in books 1 and 2; I don't think he's dead) So far I have either a Fighter 1 Rogue 9 or a Fighter 3 Rogue 7; archery fighting style in both. Any other ideas on how to fit Raven into the system?
I suspect that 13th age might be a better way to try and create him though ...

floof. Danger floof.
@goodguy5 My boys did that occasionally as well. We thought either gas bubble or something similar.

On the occasion it happens, I always assume nightmare

could also be the start of teething

That's not *usually* how he acts getting teeth. At least with the 12 he has so far

2:23 PM
@NautArch We were somehow always surprised by a tooth. A kid would have a fussy day, maybe not nap well, have a bit of a fever... enough that we'd get a little worried and check a bunch of times through the night, and then POP! New tooth in the morning.
But even by our third child, it never occurred to us at the time "oh, maybe they're cutting a tooth."

How have I never realized you can follow questions before?

@Medix2 Feature isn't that old. Had a small popup thingy when it first came in

Yaakov EllisWe are happy to announce that the previously announced follow question and answer feature is now live across the Network, including Stack Overflow, all Stack Exchange sites, and all Meta sites. I love that feature
But yeah, pretty new

I just noticed it today because I got a notification on a question I accidentally followed
@Someone_Evil Ah, thanks for the link!

@Medix2 hah! That had to be a bit surprising/confusing at first :)

@Someone_Evil Ugh, that reminds me I have to go back and unfavorite all the posts I favorited just because I thought they were good and wanted to give a star to, but don't really care if they get any updating.

2:49 PM
@nitsua60 me too

I still would give all my rep for the ability to annotate a post--when I go to my bookmarks/favorites tab I want to see a note I made as to why.
Was it one I want to answer some day? Was it one that I just have as a reference so I can find it again? (I'm looking at you, list-o'-traps question.) Was it because I'd made lots of comment-suggestions that I want to go back and clean up?

@nitsua60 Favoriting a post gives you updates on it?

@nitsua60 Wait why?
(bookmarking is the exact same thing as star with a new name/icon, no update notifications. Follow is a new feature that gives you updates and is unrelated to bookmarking.)

@Medix2 Sort of, you can see updates to bookmarked questions in the relevant tab on your user profile, but it doesn't notify you

You've always been able to see that though right?
That's not new as far as I'm aware.

2:53 PM
@Rubiksmoose Wait, I thought they were converting favorites to follows in the background?

@nitsua60 Nope!

(whew!)

@nitsua60 No, they are now bookmarks

For that exact reason I believe.

I think there was a (declined) feature req to let you convert (fav->follow)

2:55 PM
Seems odd to decline but I may be misestimating how easy that would be to implement

Here. Dev time, and personally I can't imagine it would actually be that useful, (at most single use to any one user)

@Rubiksmoose I've not made use of it yet

I have an answer to one of my questions now downvoted and accepted... This feels wrong XD

It's very nice from a moderation standpoint because it means I can close a few tabs I'd otherwise have open and instead just wait for notifications to come in.

@Someone_Evil Oh they wanted... Yeah I can see that being declined. I was imagining just a button when viewing your bookmarks next to each question that turned it into a follow
It's weird seeing somebody completely new (to me) with lots of reputation and then I remember you can change your username

@nitsua60 I recall having a discussion about saving tabs and stuff in that way. Lemme go dig through slack to see if I can find the discussion.
@nitsua60 Consensus was OneTab and Diigo.

3:38 PM
@V2Blast took you longer to respond than I expected, I was really just curious though, doesn't bother me or anything

@ACuriousMind we have a new visitor to our Sci-Fi chat :D

@AncientSwordRage Uh...that's nice I guess? I feel like I'm missing a bit of context here :P

@ACuriousMind NM, seemed like someone you might know

Ah, I see. Yeah, I kinda do, but not in a partuclarly friendly way :P

3:55 PM
@ACuriousMind just a heads up then
@nitsua60 list-o'-traps?
