To be clear... we were in the middle of a phone call talking about this site going into public beta when I got the pings earlier... so they didn't actually have any impact on the site status. :D
... speaking of. I know Tags can be annoying and boring but they're really important to keeping the site looking and growing well. The tags I haven't changed here are ones that I feel need some domain knowledge to weigh in on. I appreciate @FlashCactus giving feedback ... It'd be nice to see if y'all concur
Since at this moment very few users have the sufficient reputations to even propose tag synonyms, and duplicate tags are already starting to be a problem, this is going to be a place for any member to point out which tag should be redirected where.

Tags are indeed one of the things we should get (at least reasonably close to) right as early as possible, so I'd love to see everyone's active participation in the discussion of this topic.
FYI, we also have a separate "tag" chat where we could have lengthy discussions without writing hundreds of comments under each post in Meta, though it's somewhat unpopular right now.
As is the whole topic, though, and I really hope for a revival.
