@PabloGonzálezL you do get the help text as well though:-)

@PabloGonzálezL thanks, I will open an issue :)
@DavidCarlisle quack

@PauloCereda café da manhã

@DavidCarlisle ó não

@PauloCereda bad timing. Too late for breakfast, too early for lunch.

@UlrikeFischer a pausa para o almoço é entre 11h e 16h, para que haja tempo para cozinhar o pato.

8:10 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh no
@DavidCarlisle that's actually a very good Portuguese sentence, meanings aside!

@PauloCereda Claro

@UlrikeFischer just in time for lunch. food preparation takes time. exactly the point @DavidCarlisle was making, I see now.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
@UlrikeFischer oh no

@PauloCereda It's hard being a duck.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh a quote

8:14 AM
@PauloCereda ooh another ooh

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh

@DavidCarlisle a question tagged with "picture-mode" on the main site.

stories to read on your phone (set with xelatex) books.sayahna.org/ml/pdf/aim-ph-2.pdf
@UlrikeFischer you are the new queen of picture mode.

8:30 AM
@DavidCarlisle ups. trapped ;-(.

@DavidCarlisle ooh we are the champions
@DavidCarlisle I don't even know how to start reading it. :) The cover is as far as I can go.

@DavidCarlisle what a nice script.

8:56 AM
@PauloCereda Look at the images! Beautiful!

@PauloCereda you need to be a linguist like @AlanMunn and me.

9:12 AM
@mickep ooh
@DavidCarlisle oh

1 hour later…
10:31 AM
@JosephWright I can't embed a fstream with dvips. This here prints abc pdf.obj1/Type/EmbeddedFilet1cmr.fd in the pdf after dvips + ps2pdf
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{l3pdf}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\pdf_uncompress:
\ExplSyntaxOff
\begin{document}\showoutput
abc
\ExplSyntaxOn
\pdf_object_new:nn {test} {fstream}
\pdf_object_write:nn {test}{
        {/Type/EmbeddedFile}
        {t1cmr.fd}
      }
\ExplSyntaxOff

\end{document}

10:42 AM
@JosephWright I found the error, \__pdf_backend_object_write_fstream:nn is not defined, but the code tries to use it in \__pdf_backend_object_write:nn.

10:55 AM
Typesetting question: If one has letter spacing enabled for headers (set in small caps), and one also set theorems with small caps, how would you do with the theorems (that might have "titles")? Say THEOREM 5.1 (PYTHAGORAS). Would you add letter spacing in the word "THEOREM" and "PYTHAGORAS" as well? But no letter spacing in 5.1, I assume?

@UlrikeFischer oops
@UlrikeFischer Guess I should look at that

@JosephWright I'm trying to figure out what is the correct syntax for file stream. From the pdfmark reference I thought mark ~ #1 ~ ( #3 )~ (r)~ file ~ /PUT ~ pdfmark ~ but ps2pdf complains ;-(

yo'
11:19 AM
@PauloCereda @JosephWright @barbarabeeton What do you call a duck that steals? (overheard at Overleaf)

@yo' ooh no idea

@JosephWright I had the right syntax. But you have to call ps2pdf with -dNOSAFER (or setup some pathes stackoverflow.com/questions/40156190/…). And it seems not to be able to use kpathsea pathes.
\cs_new_protected:Npn \__pdf_backend_object_write_fstream:nn #1#2
  {
    \exp_args:Nx
      \__pdf_backend_object_write_fstream:nnn {#1} #2
  }

\cs_new_protected:Npn \__pdf_backend_object_write_fstream:nnn #1#2#3
  {
   \tl_set:Nn\l_tmpa_tl {#3}\show\l_tmpa_tl

    \__kernel_backend_postscript:x
      {
        %[nobreak]
        ~
        mark ~ #1 ~ << #2 >> /PUT ~ pdfmark ~
        mark ~ #1 ~ ( #3 )~ (r)~ file ~ /PUT ~ pdfmark ~
      }
  }
@JosephWright ^^^ with dvips embedded files. ;-)

@UlrikeFischer , @JosephWright Arbitrary, binary file content should be encoded and converted to a string. pdfbase uses \pdffiledump. Example with additional stream dictionary <</foo/bar>>:
 mark {pbs@obj0}(48656C6C6F20576F726C64210A) /ASCIIHexDecode filter /PUT pdfmark
 mark {pbs@obj0}<</foo/bar>> /PUT pdfmark mark {pbs@obj0}/CLOSE

@AlexG oh, that's an idea.

@UlrikeFischer Note that PS imposes a size limit for strings.
Media 9 implements a method that splits the file into chunks and appends them one by one.

11:26 AM
@AlexG why don't you use the file method above? Because of the -dNOSAFER restriction?

@UlrikeFischer Yes, and the PS is self-sufficient. Embedding takes place from Tex to Dvi.

@AlexG sounds reasonable. Where is the media 9 code? I can try to move it to the dvips backend.

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright It's in pdfbase also, not media9, apologies. Example with a bigger file:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[bigfiles]{pdfbase}
\pagestyle{empty}

\ExplSyntaxOn

\begin{document}
\rule{1pt}{1pt}
\pbs_pdfobj:nnn{}{fstream}{{/foo/bar}{example-movie.mp4}}
\end{document}
The chunks are written to \jobname.m9, then embedded using \special.
Note the option bigfiles, this also sidesteps TeX memory issues.
@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright The chunks are in \jobname.pbsdat, sorry.

@AlexG I will try to look in the afternoon, I have to make lunch now.

4 hours ago, by David Carlisle
@UlrikeFischer a pausa para o almoço é entre 11h e 16h, para que haja tempo para cozinhar o pato.

11:41 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh no

Sim, toma muito tempo, comer um pato. Tantos ossos...

@AlexG oh no

@AlexG not to mention cricket bats

@DavidCarlisle OH NO

@DavidCarlisle Normalemente, ponho-los num outro prato, nao como-los.

11:47 AM
@AlexG probably wise

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright Sorry, with bigfiles embedding takes place from Dvi to Ps. Still avoiding -dNOSAFER . ;)
@UlrikeFischer Sorry again, pdfmark was missing after /CLOSE.

12:30 PM
Hi folks, a ConTeXt question: if my chapter headings start on a new page, and I have the grid turned on, and I want to insert one line of space before the chapter heading – why does putting before={\blank[big,force]} in setuphead move things off the grid? Leaving force out doesn't insert any space at all...

@PauloCereda Muito bom

@PabloGonzálezL quá :)
@PabloGonzálezL oh in Spanish I think it's cuac?

@DavidCarlisle (~˘▾˘)~
@PauloCereda More or less :)
@UlrikeFischer Can you add returntogrid, bearwear and combofont to l3prefix?

1:35 PM
@solisoc I guess, it's because blank does nothing if at the top of the page. The forcing of a big blank space probably adds a big skip amount but does not call the grid code.

@TeXnician I suspect you are probably correct. I have asked a question here and hopefully someone can provide a robust solution tex.stackexchange.com/questions/540431/…

@solisoc Robust but ugly:
\setuplayout[grid=yes]

\setuphead
    [chapter]
    [before={\mbox{}\blank[line]}]

\showgrid

\starttext

\startchapter[title={One}]
This is Chapter One.
\stopchapter

\startchapter[title={One}]
This is Chapter One.
\stopchapter

\stoptext
That's why I did not answer.

@TeXnician In fact that inserts two lines of space before the chapter heading, I think. \mbox{} alone inserts one. But that's very helpful, even if not the most elegant solution. Why don't you answer with that, and I can accept a more elegant solution if one is offered?

1:58 PM
ooh a light hits the gloom on the grey

@solisoc Well, I will.

Cheers.

2:26 PM

@PauloCereda You need to replace one u with an o...

@yo' qoack?
This sounds Shakespearean. :)

@DavidCarlisle eleven hundred to go? :)

@yo' -- Even with the hints to @PauloCereda, I'm puzzled.

I KNOW
It's not the u in duck, but in rubber!
@barbarabeeton ^^

@PauloCereda -- ooh!

We docks ducks are very naïve :)
@barbarabeeton ooh

3:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle It will be much improved after another 1100 points. You just need to make sure that the number of upvotes on your questions remains even.

@yo' that's the plan

@DavidCarlisle whoops, I missed that remark …

@HaraldHanche-Olsen the main thing is to manage downvotes (avoid them, or nullify them with rep cap) untill all the fives, but allow them until I get on a 6-1 cycle to ain for all the 6s

@DavidCarlisle ooh practical modular arithmetic

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh

3:57 PM
hello

@lindaOiladali hi

I hope that you are in a good health,
please if you have an idea :tex.stackexchange.com/questions/540447/…

@lindaOiladali no harm done but anyone hanging around this chat will see all questions posted so adding a pointer never helps much:-)
@lindaOiladali as a general advice though there is no actual question there you should really say what you want to change. Also \large in math mode will give you a warning that size commands should not be used in math

i want to change the space between the fractions
i want to change the space between the fractions
that's why I put large

@lindaOiladali yes but LaTeX doesn't print LaTeX Font Warning: Command \Large invalid in math mode on input line 10. by accident the warning is given because size commands don't work in math mode even though sometimes they might have some effects on the size of some symbols.
@lindaOiladali is this French? (From the layout of the division) (not that it matters, just asking:-)

4:07 PM
yes

quack :)
@DavidCarlisle coin coin (we ducks are polyglot)

@lindaOiladali thought so:-) Trawled the world finding long division layouts for w3.org/TR/MathML3/chapter3.html#presm.mlongdiv.ex :-)
@PauloCereda s/polyglot/tasty/

@DavidCarlisle oh no

I don't understand

@lindaOiladali the long vertical bar and the result and the divisor on the right (the second image at the link I gave) is typically French style, the English style is the first image with the divisor at the left and the result at the top, and the other styles were suggested from people from various countries.
@lindaOiladali or did you mean you didn't understand the comment about \Large ?

4:24 PM
@DavidCarlisle I don't want to change I juste want make clear what I do

@DavidCarlisle I'm a :right=right person. Sounds right ;-)

@lindaOiladali sure the comment about the style was just a side comment out of interest. But for your actual question just asking for the layout to be improved isn't enough you really need to say exactly what you want to improve as most people will not be familiar with that layout
@UlrikeFischer better than being a wrong=wrong person

i tant to get fraction mor large and an alignement

@lindaOiladali edit the question to list the changes you want

i do it

2 hours later…
@PauloCereda aah, so that was it! I though that today's news had to be a fake, it was just a rehersal! ;-)

@Rmano :)
@Rmano was Big Bird on CNN?

@PauloCereda Dunno, just saw a snippet on twitter while chasing a darktable bug...

@Rmano ooh

@PauloCereda -- That sounds like a very good cast for such a program.

7:03 PM
@barbarabeeton CNN is open to me during the quarantine, and it will be 10AM my time! I will try to watch!
@barbarabeeton Big Bird is way better to listen than the POTUS.
And more reliable.

@PauloCereda -- I think the orange being should follow his own advice if he gets any hint of worrying symptoms.

@PauloCereda ah, I was referring to him --- the speech about sunlight and disinfectants was a rehersal for Sesame Street, no?
...couldn't be serious...

@barbarabeeton he should try to eat a lightbulb and see how it goes. :)
@Rmano in other news I got a Bible in Italian! Mum and I are having a lot of fun (she is Italian).

@PauloCereda I can think of one person who should definitely watch it. It will perhaps be at his level.

@AlanMunn :)

7:08 PM
@Rmano -- Oh, I sincerely hope not!!! Sesame Street tries very hard to broadcast only truthful and non-harmful information. Even the Swedish chef's nonsense wouldn't cause harm.

I don't Abby, I want Cookie Monster to be there!
I will be a very sad duck if I see no cookie jokes during this very serious and important broadcast...

@PauloCereda -- I'd rather enjoy Oscar, but the purpose of this is to send a totally positive message, and Oscar can be a bit ambiguous at times.

@barbarabeeton ooh Oscar is fantastic! <3
By the way...
@barbarabeeton @AlanMunn youtube.com/watch?v=Bri-sJ3Q-B0
This is lovely!
HI THANKS!

@PauloCereda then he will need batteries... vvvv

@Rmano ooh

7:22 PM
@PauloCereda Maybe she knows the comic ... ;-)

yo'
7:38 PM
@PauloCereda for some reason reminded me of this one: youtube.com/watch?v=CwzjlmBLfrQ

@yo' OH MY YEEEES
@yo' Mr. Bean is great!

yo'
@PauloCereda if you say this, then I hope you also know movies and series where Rowan Atkinson speaks. Because these are like 1000% better

7:55 PM
@yo' Oh I like Blackadder too. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda and Keeping Mum? That's the top; including the Czech dubbing.

@yo' oh I don't know it!

yo'
@PauloCereda it's darker than black humour from Anglican church

@yo' oh my

yo'
You have to see it!

8:13 PM
@yo' getting it as we speak. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda :)

8:28 PM
From a tweet:
In 15 years from now, most household cleaning products will have added to their warnings

"Do not inject"

and when some new generation asks "Why is this stupid warning here? What moron would think it's ok to inject this?", previous generations can tell them why.
@barbarabeeton @AlanMunn ^^

@PauloCereda -- This started in a much more innocent, but equally stupid way, with the warnings on coffee cups "Warning: Contents may be hot." That was apparently a response to a lawsuit from a careless person who spilled coffee in his lap while drinking while driving. (All hearsay, but I've seen the warning on take-out cups.)

@barbarabeeton wow, really?

yo'
@PauloCereda yeah. And while that one is ridiculous, I can see why microwave packaging has "do not dry pets" written on it.

@yo' oh my...

yo'
@PauloCereda yeah :(

yo'
8:49 PM
@barbarabeeton @PauloCereda You have mail...

@yo' -- Yes, I see it. (Will read later, after I finish answering a critique of an article I was asked to write on "the future of text". That's due almost instantaneously.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton :)

@yo' got it!

9:33 PM
@PabloGonzálezL done.

9:51 PM
@barbarabeeton just send them a thumbs up emoji it's so old fashioned to use actual words in a review

This is not related to TeX, but does anybody know of that website which protested against copyright restrictions by publishing a text in a technologically smart way?

Anonymous
I think they took every n-th word from a text, and made that into a document.

Anonymous
Then took every n+1-th word and put that into another part of the puzzle and so on.

Anonymous
Then the pieces were merged together in front of the website visitor.

@barbarabeeton Thank you Barbara. I will send them a mail tomorrow.
